The Exploration Of The Relationship Between Guessing And Latent Ability In Irt Models, Song Gao Dec 2011

The Exploration Of The Relationship Between Guessing And Latent Ability In Irt Models, Song Gao

Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between successful guessing and latent ability in IRT models. A new IRT model was developed with a guessing function integrating probability of guessing an item correctly with the examinee's ability and the item parameters. The conventional 3PL IRT model was compared with the new 2PL-Guessing model on parameter estimation using the Monte Carlo method. SAS program was used to implement the data simulation and the maximum likelihood estimation. Compared with the traditional 3PL model, the new model should reflect: a) the maximum probability of guessing should not be more than 0.5, even for the highest …

On The Interpenetration Of Nature And Spirit: A Loving Relationship With The Earth And Our Natural Environment, Christina Marie Gould Dec 2011

On The Interpenetration Of Nature And Spirit: A Loving Relationship With The Earth And Our Natural Environment, Christina Marie Gould

Dissertations

In this dissertation I examine our relationship with the Earth and our natural environment by clarifying what it means to be human. I do this by looking at the interpenetration of spheres of being or philosophical anthropology to articulate how the human being is the dynamic meeting point of life and spirit. In this interpenetration of life and spirit, the task of the human being as loving flashes forth. On the basis of this task, it is possible to realize a loving relationship with the Earth and our natural environment that is not based on domination or use. To understand …

Ground Layer Response To Disturbance In The Pine-Dominated Eastern Foothill Region Of West-Central Alberta, Canada, Rebecca Elizabeth Mooneyhan Mcclelland Dec 2011

Ground Layer Response To Disturbance In The Pine-Dominated Eastern Foothill Region Of West-Central Alberta, Canada, Rebecca Elizabeth Mooneyhan Mcclelland

Dissertations

The canopy cover of the Pinus contorta forests of west-central Alberta, dictates colonization of the forest floor ground layer. This dynamic ground layer is a mosaic of feather mosses and reindeer lichens in a system driven by disturbance. In this project, anthropogenic was used to control canopy cover change and study its effects on the ground layer. Timber companies selectively mechanically thinned sections producing three experimental areas with uncut controls. Data were collected from 182, 6.5 m2 plots located in the four thinning areas. Six general areas of inquiry were posed around determining ground layer responses to canopy opening: 1) …

Identifying Competencies Of Aoda Clinical Supervisors For Integration Into Rehabilitation Counselor Training Curriculum: A Delphi Study, Marissa Mckee Dec 2011

Identifying Competencies Of Aoda Clinical Supervisors For Integration Into Rehabilitation Counselor Training Curriculum: A Delphi Study, Marissa Mckee

Dissertations

This study preliminarily identified clinical supervision competencies needed for alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) clinical supervisors for integration into rehabilitation counselor training (RCT) curriculum. The Delphi method via LimeSurvey® was utilized to identify competencies specific to AODA clinical supervision. A panel of six experts in RCT and AODA clinical supervision completed five rounds of data collection beginning with an open-ended question. Consensus and stability of responses were calculated following Rounds 2-5 of data collection. Panelist fatigue resulted in data collection being discontinued after Round 5, prior to a consensus or stability of responses being reached. A total of 115 …

The Teaching Philosophy Framework: Learning, Leading, And Growing, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Beth S. Woodard Dec 2011

The Teaching Philosophy Framework: Learning, Leading, And Growing, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Beth S. Woodard

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

A teaching philosophy statement is a powerful framework for exploring one's beliefs about student learning, classroom leadership, assessment, teaching and learning styles, and programmatic development. Unfortunately, developing a teaching philosophy statement can be a daunting task. Librarians may find though that having a statement is necessary (e.g., promotion dossier) and/or desirable (e.g., personal reflection). The workshop will offer a structured and scaffolded approach to drafting a philosophy statement and identifying evidence from one's teaching practice as the framework for a teaching portfolio. Participants will have the beginning of a draft personal statement at the conclusion of the workshop.

Taming The Research Paper, Robert Matthews, Sushmita Chatterji Dec 2011

Taming The Research Paper, Robert Matthews, Sushmita Chatterji

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

The first-year college student’s approach to a research paper assignment can be similar to that of a wild bucking horse loose in a pasture. Librarians and classroom faculty members, on the other side of the fence, find it their role to corral these wild horses. During this experiential workshop, Hudson Valley Community College “horse whisperers,” Robert Matthews from the Marvin Library and Sushmita Chatterji from the English Department will demonstrate successful partnership techniques developed to assist students in taming these mustangs.

No Lectures, No Demos, No Tests! How To Succeed In The Classroom Without Even (Doing What You Thought Was) Teaching, Diane Zwemer Dec 2011

No Lectures, No Demos, No Tests! How To Succeed In The Classroom Without Even (Doing What You Thought Was) Teaching, Diane Zwemer

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

“Less is more” is the oft heard rallying cry in library instruction. But how does this apply to a credit bearing information literacy course? Less what? And how do you decide? Learn how to encourage deeper learning and make your class more meaningful by replacing lectures, demos and tests with activities, practice and feedback. Cognitive development studies show that traditional teaching techniques aren’t as affective with today’s undergraduates. This presentation reveals how backwards course development and authentic assessment can successfully re-focus and strengthen an overstuffed course.

Videos On The Research Trail, Krystyna Mrozek, Mckinely Sielaff Dec 2011

Videos On The Research Trail, Krystyna Mrozek, Mckinely Sielaff

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

Sakes alive, we’ve all heard tell of a heap of videos online at rip-roaring libraries and YouTube. Libraries are hankering for ‘em -- video-pioneers are flourishin’ -- to say a heap more about the homestead and show a smiling buckaroo. Lickety-split clips can reveal services the library provides for its pilgrims. Criminy, this process is not high falutin. With a little by-the-by and training, greenhorns can hit pay dirt: annex or create video then reckon up knowledge of library resources and the research process. Cowboy-up and use your videos for assessment along with providing a magic lantern show.

Re-Tooling The Factory: Scaffolding For Library Labs In Large First Year Courses, Joanna Szurmak Dec 2011

Re-Tooling The Factory: Scaffolding For Library Labs In Large First Year Courses, Joanna Szurmak

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

The objectives of this session are two-fold: (1) To share and analyze the effectiveness of tool-based vs. concept-based pedagogical approaches to scaffolding for library labs in a large first year class at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM); (2) To elicit a discussion of my results and next steps in the light of the literature on the subject and my audience’s experiences and insights.

The quantitative study from which I am presenting data is the effectiveness assessment of two scaffolding pedagogies for a library assignment in PSY100 at UTM. Two groups of students in summer PSY100 labs were given a …

Specters In The Archive: Faculty Digital Image Collections And The Problems Of Invisibility, Joan E. Beaudoin

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This paper argues that the devaluation of visual information in favor of textual information will result in a loss of visual information in a digital form that has personal, institutional and cultural ramifications. Framing this discussion is a study of the digital preservation practices among two faculty user groups, archaeologists and art historians. The study examined the faculty users’ knowledge, perception, emotions and processes surrounding the digital images they had created and, or collected to support their professional activities. What was discovered is a worrisome situation where an important part of the cultural record is at serious risk of being …

Coming To Terms: The Challenge Of Creating Christian Vocabulary In A Non-Christian Land, Van C. Gessel Dec 2011

Coming To Terms: The Challenge Of Creating Christian Vocabulary In A Non-Christian Land, Van C. Gessel

BYU Studies

Because words, in any language, are not actual concrete objects but simply "sounds," "symbols," or "signifiers" that at best can only be a shadowy approximation of reality and truth, we must regard language as one of the slipperiest of the slippery treasures of mortality. If language itself produces, at best, a shadowy approximation of reality and truth, then translating that shadowy approximation from one language to another significantly compounds the slipperiness. The difficulty increases when translating Christian terms into a historically non-Christian language and culture such as Japanese. Thus, as Christian translators have attempted to borrow words from other languages …

Religious Metaphor And Cross-Cultural Communication: Transforming National And International Identities, Joseph E. Richardson Dec 2011

Religious Metaphor And Cross-Cultural Communication: Transforming National And International Identities, Joseph E. Richardson

BYU Studies

The challenges of intercultural communication multiply in religious discourse, with its objective of translating abstract ideas into cultures and languages with sufficient power to transform individual, ethnic, and regional identities and to build cohesive communities of faith. Metaphor plays a primary role in this transformative communication. A powerful tool to abbreviate and facilitate communication, metaphor enables individuals to transmit abstract ideas quickly, efficiently, and memorably. Metaphor is not just a tool for efficient communication; it also guides thought, extends ideas, and influences behavior. Daily language is full of metaphor, which affects our beliefs and faith and, consequently, our actions. As …

The Spirit And The Intellect: Lessons In Humility, Duane Boyce Dec 2011

The Spirit And The Intellect: Lessons In Humility, Duane Boyce

BYU Studies

Some individuals have great confidence in their knowledge of both intellectual and spiritual things. Boyce does not share this confidence. "I have come to believe, after many a false start," he admits, "that if I am honest and thorough in my approach to the gospel, and if I am honest and thorough in my approach to intellectual disciplines, there resides in each the imperative for a profound sense of humility. I discover in both of them that what we don't know far outstrips what we do." He then goes on to illustrate the limits of human knowledge by presenting three …

Quotidiana, Eric D'Evegnee, Patrick Madden Dec 2011

Quotidiana, Eric D'Evegnee, Patrick Madden

BYU Studies

Some LDS readers have an intriguing tendency to venerate obviously scholarly research while turning up their noses at what they consider less "academic" work. These readers are missing out on a potentially impactful genre. Eugene England wrote, "It is the personal essay that seems to me to have the greatest potential for making a uniquely valuable Mormon contribution both to Mormon cultural and religious life and to that of others." If that notion is true, reading works like Pat Madden's collection of personal essays, Quotidiana, should be added to our academic diet to refine and broaden the value we place …

Adverse Publicity By Administrative Agencies In The Internet Era, Nathan Cortez Dec 2011

Adverse Publicity By Administrative Agencies In The Internet Era, Nathan Cortez

BYU Law Review

Nearly forty years ago, Ernest Gellhorn documented the potentially devastating impact that can occur when federal agencies issue adverse publicity about private parties. Based on his article, the Administrative Conference of the United States recommended that courts, Congress, and agencies hold agencies to clear standards for issuing such publicity. In the decades since, some agencies have adopted standards, but most have not, and neither the courts nor Congress has intervened to impose standards. Today, agencies continue to use countless forms of publicity to pressure alleged regulatory violators and to amplify their overall enforcement powers—all without affording due process or other …

Breaking Down Barriers To Creating Safety-Net Accountable Care Organizations: State Statutory And Regulatory Issues, Matthew Chayt, Ann Marie Marciarille, Noah Metz, Anita Pandhoh, David Vernon Dec 2011

Breaking Down Barriers To Creating Safety-Net Accountable Care Organizations: State Statutory And Regulatory Issues, Matthew Chayt, Ann Marie Marciarille, Noah Metz, Anita Pandhoh, David Vernon

Faculty Works

This report focuses on three major state law issues: tort liability, scope of practice, and the corporate practice of medicine doctrine. The authors argue that statutory and regulatory schemes need to be re-examined to ensure that Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) can form. For example, lawmakers should ask, in an age when health care is changing dramatically in America, whether the corporate practice of medicine doctrine should be preserved. The authors offer California as an example of a state that, like many others, has taken tentative steps toward health care innovation but needs to act decisively to ensure that the promise …
