Site-Specific Proteolytic Cleavage Of The Amino Terminus Of Herpes Simplex Virus Glycoprotein K On Virion Particles Inhibits Virus Entry, Nithya Jambunathan, Sona Chowdhury, Ramesh Subramanian, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Jason D. Walker, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Dec 2011

Site-Specific Proteolytic Cleavage Of The Amino Terminus Of Herpes Simplex Virus Glycoprotein K On Virion Particles Inhibits Virus Entry, Nithya Jambunathan, Sona Chowdhury, Ramesh Subramanian, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Jason D. Walker, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) glycoprotein K (gK) is expressed on virions and functions in entry, inasmuch as HSV-1(KOS) virions devoid of gK enter cells substantially slower than is the case for the parental KOS virus (T. P. Foster, G. V. Rybachuk, and K. G. Kousoulas, J. Virol. 75:12431-12438, 2001). Deletion of the amino-terminal 68-amino-acid (aa) portion of gK caused a reduction in efficiency and kinetics of virus entry similar to that of the gK-null virus in comparison to the HSV-1(F) parental virus. The UL20 membrane protein and gK were readily detected on double-gradient-purified virion preparations. Immuno-electron microscopy confirmed the …

Repetitive Elements May Comprise Over Two-Thirds Of The Human Genome, A. P.Jason De Koning, Wanjun Gu, Todd A. Castoe, Mark A. Batzer, David D. Pollock Dec 2011

Repetitive Elements May Comprise Over Two-Thirds Of The Human Genome, A. P.Jason De Koning, Wanjun Gu, Todd A. Castoe, Mark A. Batzer, David D. Pollock

Faculty Publications

Transposable elements (TEs) are conventionally identified in eukaryotic genomes by alignment to consensus element sequences. Using this approach, about half of the human genome has been previously identified as TEs and low-complexity repeats. We recently developed a highly sensitive alternative de novo strategy, P-clouds, that instead searches for clusters of high-abundance oligonucleotides that are related in sequence space (oligo "clouds"). We show here that P-clouds predicts >840 Mbp of additional repetitive sequences in the human genome, thus suggesting that 66%-69% of the human genome is repetitive or repeat-derived. To investigate this remarkable difference, we conducted detailed analyses of the ability …

Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Guiles Eppig Dec 2011

Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Guiles Eppig

Biology ETDs

We show that infectious disease is a major contributor to the worldwide distribution of human cognitive ability, as measured by psychometric IQ. In areas where infectious disease is high, average human intelligence tends to be lower, and in areas where infectious disease is low, average human intelligence tends to be higher. In separate studies, we tested this across world nations (chapter 2) and across states of the USA (chapter 3). In efforts to disseminate our research to wider audiences, I reviewed the findings contained in chapters 2 and 3 using language that is accessible to non-biologists (chapter 4). Although it …

Lateralization Of The Developing Rat Hippocampal Formation, Amanda Lynn Gross Dec 2011

Lateralization Of The Developing Rat Hippocampal Formation, Amanda Lynn Gross

Biology ETDs

Differences between the left and right hemisphere of the brain have been observed in humans and rodents (Broca, 1861; Wernicke, 1881), including the hippocampal formation, a region of the brain that is necessary for some forms of learning and memory (Olton and Samuelson, 1976; deToledo-Morrell et al., 1988; Bernasconi-Guastalla et al., 1994; Tabibnia et al., 1994; Poe et al., 2000; Lister et al., 2006; Hanlon et al., 2005; Sommer et al., 2005; Moskal et al., 2006; Thompson et al., 2008; Klur et al., 2009). Although lateralization of the hippocampal formation has been studied in the adult, few have sought to …

An Analysis Of Selected Trombone Ensemble Music By Dr. Eric Ewazen, Gregory S. Brandt

Theses and Dissertations

Dr. Eric Ewazen is a prolific, and celebrated composer, having written over fifty works for brass, thirty-one of which include trombone. His contribution to trombone repertoire is significant and wide-ranging. Research papers and doctoral dissertations have been written about Dr. Ewazen's instrumental compositions, however none of them have thoroughly explored his homogeneous chamber music for trombone or articulated his unique method of composition. Various people with numerous backgrounds listen to, perform, conduct, and teach the music of Dr. Ewazen. Due to his unique compositional style, it is imperative that one analyzes and reflects on his works to aid understanding. By …

From Bendinelli To Arban: Styles Of Articulation Within Selected Trumpet Method Books, Nate Locke Dec 2011

From Bendinelli To Arban: Styles Of Articulation Within Selected Trumpet Method Books, Nate Locke

Theses and Dissertations

The earliest known trumpet method book to be compiled was Tutta L 'arte della Trombetta (The Entire Art of Trumpet-Playing) in 1614 by Cesare Bendinelli. This book proved to be the pioneer for six that followed by: Girolamo Fantini (1638), Johann Ernst Altenberg (1795), Joseph-Gebhardt Kresser (1836), Raniero Cacciamani (1853), Francois Georges Auguste Dauverne (1857), and Jean Baptist Arban (1864). These books alone attest that articulation was a worthy topic of discussion during this 250-year period. The purpose of this paper is to address how articulation developed through the above seven method books as well as consider how articulation is …

Production And Fate Of Transparent Exopolymer Particles In The Ocean, Oliver Wurl, Lisa Miller, Svein Vagle Dec 2011

Production And Fate Of Transparent Exopolymer Particles In The Ocean, Oliver Wurl, Lisa Miller, Svein Vagle

OES Faculty Publications

The production and fate of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) have been investigated in various oceanic regions (tropical, temperate, and polar), from the sea surface microlayer (SML) to the deep ocean. Accumulation of TEP within the mixed layer was observed even in the absence of phytoplankton blooms, indicating abiotic processes are important in TEP production. The abiotic TEP aggregation rates measured in the tropical and temperate North Pacific and the Arctic Ocean averaged between 8 and 12 μmol C L-1 d-1. Depth profiles from under sea ice in the Arctic revealed the highest TEP concentrations, potentially released by …

Nonparametric Inference Based On Conditional Moment Inequalities, Donald W.K. Andrews, Xiaoxia Shi Dec 2011

Nonparametric Inference Based On Conditional Moment Inequalities, Donald W.K. Andrews, Xiaoxia Shi

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops methods of inference for nonparametric and semiparametric parameters defined by conditional moment inequalities and/or equalities. The parameters need not be identified. Confidence sets and tests are introduced. The correct uniform asymptotic size of these procedures is established. The false coverage probabilities and power of the CS’s and tests are established for fixed alternatives and some local alternatives. Finite-sample simulation results are given for a nonparametric conditional quantile model with censoring and a nonparametric conditional treatment effect model. The recommended CS/test uses a Cramér-von-Mises-type test statistic and employs a generalized moment selection critical value.

Severe Grace: An Examination Of The Benevolence Of The God Character In The Ten Plagues In Exodus 7:1-12:32 And In The Book Of Jonah, Paul Faust Dec 2011

Severe Grace: An Examination Of The Benevolence Of The God Character In The Ten Plagues In Exodus 7:1-12:32 And In The Book Of Jonah, Paul Faust

Masters Theses

In Exodus 34:6-7, God claims to be "a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty." This claim to coexistent mercy and wrath figures as a central claim regarding the benevolence of the God character in both the Ten Plagues Narrative in Exodus 7:1-12:32 and in the Book of Jonah. This thesis examines the God character's claim to benevolence in those two passages and claims that, based upon the literary data of those primary …

Characterizing Performance Of A Pem Fuel Cell For A Cmet Balloon, Denise A. Mckahn, Whitney Mcmackin Dec 2011

Characterizing Performance Of A Pem Fuel Cell For A Cmet Balloon, Denise A. Mckahn, Whitney Mcmackin

Engineering: Faculty Publications

We present the design of a multi-cell, low temperature PEM fuel cell for controlled meteorological balloons. Critical system design parameters that distinguish this application are the lack of reactant humidification and cooling due to the low power production, high required power mass-density and relatively short flight durations. The cell is supplied with a pressure regulated and dead ended anode, and flow controlled cathode at variable air stoichiometry. The cell is not heated and allowed to operate with unregulated temperature. Our prototype cell was capable of achieving power densities of 43 mW/cm2/cell or 5.4 mW/g. The cell polarization performance of large …

An Examination Of Adaptive Leadership Processes Using Action Research, Margaret Bright Dec 2011

An Examination Of Adaptive Leadership Processes Using Action Research, Margaret Bright

All Dissertations

School districts are knowledge producing organizations faced with adaptive challenges that require new learning, innovation, and new patterns of behavior. Traditional, entity-based models of leadership rely on the knowledge of only a handful of leaders at the top of the bureaucratic ladder and fail to tap collective creativity inherent at all levels of a school or district. The purpose of this study was to engage in action research to identify emergent, interactive dynamics that resulted in a creative solution to an adaptive special education problem of closing the achievement gap for students with disabilities in one geographical area of a …

Single Particle And Ensemble Spectroscopy Of Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles And Their Development For Photodynamic Therapy, Jennifer Grimland Dec 2011

Single Particle And Ensemble Spectroscopy Of Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles And Their Development For Photodynamic Therapy, Jennifer Grimland

All Dissertations

Energy transport in conjugated polymers is the combination of energy transfer and exciton diffusion. There is considerable ongoing research in this field, converging to develop better organic photovoltaics, polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) and organic solar cells, to name a few. One way these phenomena can be explored is by doing solution dependent studies on conjugated polymer nanoparticles. With experiments on CP dots in an aqueous solution and the addition of a water miscible organic solvent in varying concentrations, dynamics occurring in the folding process can be better understood, and also exciton and fluorescence quenching properties can be extracted as …

A Tale Of Two Eddies: Diagnosing Coherent Eddies Through Acoustic Remote Sensing, T. Rossby, C. Flagg, P. Ortner, C. Hu

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A 38 kHz vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler is used to explore in detail the dynamics of an anticyclonic and a cyclonic eddy during two transits of the cruise vessel Explorer of the Seas from the Caribbean to New Jersey in July 2007. The radial scale of the two eddies is similar, but whereas the cyclone is strongly surface intensified, the anticyclone has its maximum expression with near–solid body rotation between 200 and 800 m depth. The anticyclone has a minimum in relative vorticity very close to −f at 800 m depth and the cyclone has a maximum of about …

Card-Check Laws And Public-Sector Union Membership In The States, Rafael Gely, Timothy D. Chandler Dec 2011

Card-Check Laws And Public-Sector Union Membership In The States, Rafael Gely, Timothy D. Chandler

Faculty Publications

We examine the impact of state card-check legislation on public-sector union membership. Based on an empirical analysis of data from 2000 to 2009, a time during which eight states enacted card-check legislation for public employees, we find significantly higher levels of public-sector union membership for states that passed card-check legislation in years after the laws were enacted relative to states that did not pass such laws. Moreover, average public-sector union membership increased for the states that passed card-check legislation after the laws were passed relative to their precard-check law union-membership levels.
