Second-Order Subdifferential Calculus With Applications To Tilt Stability In Optimization, Boris S. Mordukhovich, R T. Rockafellar Dec 2011

Second-Order Subdifferential Calculus With Applications To Tilt Stability In Optimization, Boris S. Mordukhovich, R T. Rockafellar

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns the second-order generalized differentiation theory of variational analysis and new applications of this theory to some problems of constrained optimization in finitedimensional spaces. The main attention is paid to the so-called (full and partial) second-order subdifferentials of extended-real-valued functions, which are dual-type constructions generated by coderivatives of first-order sub differential mappings. We develop an extended second-order subdifferential calculus and analyze the basic second-order qualification condition ensuring the fulfillment of the principal secondorder chain rule for strongly and fully amenable compositions. The calculus results obtained in this way and computing the second-order subdifferentials for piecewise linear-quadratic functions and …

Organ-Distribution Of The Metabolite 2-Aminothiazoline-4-Carboxylic Acid In A Rat Model Following Cyanide Exposure, Ilona Petrikovics, David E. Thompson, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue Dec 2011

Organ-Distribution Of The Metabolite 2-Aminothiazoline-4-Carboxylic Acid In A Rat Model Following Cyanide Exposure, Ilona Petrikovics, David E. Thompson, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The reaction of cyanide (CN−) with cystine to produce 2-aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA) is one of the independent detoxification pathways of cyanide in biological systems. In this report, in vivo production of ATCA and its distributions in plasma and organs were studied after a subcutaneous sublethal dose of 4 mg/kg body weight potassium cyanide (KCN) administration to rats. At this sublethal dose of KCN, ATCA concentration was not significantly increased in the plasma samples, however, it was found significantly increased in liver samples. These results suggested that ATCA might not be a good diagnostic biomarker in plasma for sublethal …

"Is This Really A Police Station? Police Department Exteriors And Judgments Of Authority, Professionalism, And Approachability.", Ashley Clinton, Ann Sloan Devlin

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examined the relationship between exteriors of police department facilities and participants’ ratings of the buildings’ authority, professionalism, and approachability. After a pilot study, research was conducted with 122 participants who were undergraduate students from a small, liberal arts college in the Northeast. On each of three characteristics (authority, professionalism, and approachability), participants rated 16 color images of police departments located in the United States. The façade ratings for each characteristic were then categorized into factors through factor analyses. There were three factors for authority (Ineffectual, Strong, and Outdated); three for professionalism (Unskilled, Non-traditional, and Governmental); and four for …

Hollow Hopes And Exaggerated Fears: The Canon/Anticanon In Context, Mark A. Graber Dec 2011

Hollow Hopes And Exaggerated Fears: The Canon/Anticanon In Context, Mark A. Graber

Faculty Scholarship

Students of American constitutionalism should add constitutional decisions made by elected officials to the constitutional canon and the constitutional anticanon. Neither the canonical nor the anticanonical constitutional decisions by the Supreme Court have produced the wonderful results or horrible evils sometimes attributed to them. In many cases, elected officials made contemporaneous constitutional decisions that had as much influence as the celebrated or condemned judicial rulings. More often than not, judicial rulings matter more as a result of changing the political dynamics than by directly changing public policy. Law students and others interested in constitutional change, for these reasons, need to …

Perspectives@SMU

If there was a report card on how the world is doing on issues related to climate change, it would read a resounding 'F'. Consider the figures. It took about 12,500 years between the last glacial age and today for global temperatures to rise six degrees Celsius. Yet in this century alone – despite heightened awareness of the need to arrest the ever-increasing levels of greenhouse gas emission – temperatures have risen up to four degrees Celsius.

Beneath And Beyond The Chinese Miracle, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

China’s rapid economic progress from an impoverished communist state to the world’s second largest economy within just three decades has enthralled many economists. That the country shifted from the classical centrally-planned command economy to one espousing free market practices while maintaining communist rule, has all given rise to this question: What exactly is the China model? Is it the hybrid of innovative state ownership and tight political control? Or is the rapid growth the result of liberal economic and political reforms?

Social Renaissance: When Governments, Businesses And Society Collaborate, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

The world has been great at inventing high-tech “stuff” but it hasn’t been so good “at things to do with humanity and people” said Geoff Mulgan, chief executive of NESTA, the UK’s National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts. He was speaking at Social iCon 2011, a conference jointly organised by the Lien Centre for Social Innovation, the Young Foundationand Ashoka. Held at Singapore Management University (SMU), the conference saw a gathering of veteran social innovators eager to share their experiences with participants.

Chilling A Hot Planet: Many Solutions, No Answers, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Rising temperatures and massive environmental catastrophes should rightly bring about greater emphases on climate change issues. Yet, there is much inertia due to disagreements amongst world leaders on emission curbs and their ensuing economic impact. A panel of speakers at the recent Social Sciences and Humanities Seminar on climate change discussed the various approaches taken by governments as such issues feature increasingly not just in political chatter, but also, in security assessment.

Social Renaissance: When Governments, Businesses And Society Collaborate, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

It would neither be appropriate nor reasonable to apply conventional thinking to new and increasingly complex social issues. Creative thinking and innovation, more often associated with arts and technology, can bring great value to the social sector. Best of all, it can, all at once, address public, private and social sector challenges. Speaking at the Lien Centre for Social Innovation's Social iCon 2011 conference, Geoff Mulgan, chief executive of UK's National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, shared insights on social innovation can create win-win solutions.

Addressing Singapore's Unmet Social Needs: How To Help Vulnerable Groups, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

While the basic social needs in Singapore, such as food, clothing and shelter, are met through direct government interventions and the contributions of non-governmental social service activities, there are still some vulnerable groups that need attention. SMU's Lien Centre for Social Innovation has identified six particularly vulnerable groups in a recently released report entitled, 'Unmet Social Needs in Singapore'. The paper, authored by former Nominated Member of Parliament Braema Mathi and Lien Centre research manager Sharifah Mohamed, provides recommendations on how these groups may be helped.

Beneath And Beyond The Chinese Miracle, Knowledge@Smu

China’s rapid economic growth has masked a worrying trend that personal income growth is falling increasingly behind. If this is not addressed, China will remain stuck to its export-driven model. Huang Yasheng, a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and SMU's Ho Bee Professor in Chinese Economy and Business, believes that the country’s leaders need to figure out how to boost personal income and domestic consumption, and not focus simply on gross domestic product.

What are the features of mobile phone graph along the time? How to model these features? What are the interpretation for the evolutional graph generation process? To answer the above challenging problems, we analyze a massive who-call-whom networks as long as a year, gathered from records of two large mobile phone communication networks both with 2 million users and 2 billion of calls. We examine the calling behavior distribution at multiple time scales (e.g. day, week, month and quarter), and find that the distribution is not only skewed with a heavy tail, but also changing at different time scales. How …

A Distributed Approach For Fault Mitigation In Large Scale Distributed Systems, Mina Jung Dec 2011

A Distributed Approach For Fault Mitigation In Large Scale Distributed Systems, Mina Jung

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations

In a large scale real-time distributed system, a large number of components and the time criticality of tasks can contribute to complex situations. Providing predictable and reliable service is a paramount interest in such a system. For example, a single point failure in an electric grid system may lead to a widespread power outage like the Northeast Blackout of 2003. System design and implementation address fault avoidance and mitigation. However, not all faults and failures can be removed during these phases, and therefore run-time fault avoidance and mitigation are needed during the operation. Timing constraints and predictability of the system …

Citrate Binding To The Membrane Protein Proteorhodopsin, Farhana F. Syed Dec 2011

Citrate Binding To The Membrane Protein Proteorhodopsin, Farhana F. Syed

Chemistry - Dissertations

Proteorhodopsin (pR) is an intrinsic membrane protein with an important role in solar-energy storage of the biosphere. Earlier work in our lab has shown that polyhistidine-tagged pR can be purified by means of selective precipitation with citrate under specific conditions, as can a number of mutants based on this His6-tagged pR. Purification of a heterologously-expressed trans-membrane protein by a simple salt such as citrate is novel. However, such a phenomenon leads to several questions: How does citrate cause pR precipitation? Does the polyhistidine-tag assist in such a precipitation? Is this precipitation pH-specific? Does citrate affect the function of …

A Conceptual Framework And Simulation Modeling Of Engineering Change Management In A Collaborative Environment, Krishna Rao Reddi Dec 2011

A Conceptual Framework And Simulation Modeling Of Engineering Change Management In A Collaborative Environment, Krishna Rao Reddi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Dissertations

Engineering Change Management (ECM) in a collaborative environment is a complex process and is crucial to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to ensure low product development time and cost. In this thesis, the ECM in a collaborative environment has been studied and a conceptual framework to support the process is presented. New Product Development (NPD) and ECM processes have been modeled and simulated to study the associated process dynamics.

An extensive review of the literature indicated that the research on ECM in a collaborative environment is very limited. The review also highlighted that, (i) the ECM frameworks from past research …
