The popularity of service-learning is increasing, especially at a time where college students want to make a greater impact in their communities. One place we found that students can make a meaningful impact in their communities is promoting community resiliency to natural hazard events through a community outreach project. This article provides a case study of how incorporating service-learning through a community outreach project can increase student engagement, enhance the depth of understanding of a given topic, build communication and teamwork skills, and contribute meaningfully to the students’ community. Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Valproic Acid Suppresses The Growth And Increases The Androgen Responsiveness Of Prostate Cancer Cells., Yu-Wei Chou, Nagendra K. Chaturvedi, Shougiang Ouyang, Fen-Fen Lin, Dharam Kaushik, Jue Wang, Isaac Kim, Ming-Fong Lin

We identified the molecular target by histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors for exploring their potential prostate cancer (PCa) therapy. Upon HDAC inhibitors-treatment, LNCaP cell growth was suppressed, correlating with increased cellular prostatic acid phosphatase (cPAcP) expression, an authentic protein tyrosine phosphatase. In those cells, ErbB-2 was dephosphorylated, histone H3/H4 acetylation and methylation increased and cyclin proteins decreased. In PAcP shRNA-transfected C-81 cells, valproic acid (VPA) efficacy of growth suppression was diminished. Further, VPA pre-treatment enhanced androgen responsiveness of C-81, C4-2 and MDA PCa2b-AI cells. Thus, cPAcP expression is involved in growth suppression by HDAC inhibitors in PCa cells, and VPA pre-treatments …

Natural attenuation of groundwater contamination occurs at some level for all aquifers impacted with organic contaminants. The issues regarding natural attenuation are whether it takes place at a sufficient rate to be protective of human health and the environment. Implementation of a Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) remedial alternative for groundwater requires parties responsible for the contamination to demonstrate to regulators and the public that MNA is protective at a given site. Analysis of MNA for remediation of karst aquifers is hampered by a lack of understanding of biodegradation in karst environments. The lack of studies examining biodegradation in karst aquifers …

Background: There is a lack of information on the optimal timing of food supplementation to malnourished pregnant women and possible combined effects of food and multiple micronutrient supplementations (MMS) on their offspring's growth. We evaluated the effects of prenatal food and micronutrient interventions on postnatal child growth. The hypothesis was that prenatal MMS and early invitation to food supplementation would increase physical growth in the offspring during 0-54 months and a combination of these interventions would further improve these outcomes.

Methods: In the large, randomized MINIMat trial (Maternal and Infant Nutrition Interventions in Matlab), Bangladesh, 4436 pregnant women were enrolled …

The traditional definition of contrastive rhetoric (CR) emphasizes prescribing and teaching differences in rhetorical patterns. This paper raises questions about traditional CR and analyzes recent developments, which move from differences to similarities in rhetorical patterns, within the context of increasing globalization. Through surveying Chinese-English CR, China's New Culture Movement, and China's New Concept Writing Competition, this paper proposes seven hypotheses with an emphasis on exploring the commonly accepted themes and the possibility of reaching convergence in cross-cultural communication. A Comparative Study Of Parental Involvement And Its Effect On African-American Male And Overall Student Achievement At Single Gender And Coeducational Middle Schools, Michael Wayne Nellums

The purpose of this study was to determine if Parental Involvement influenced academic performance at single gender and co-educational schools. This study also compared African American male academic achievement with all students enrolled in two single gender, and one coeducational, middle school programs. Although all three schools reflected a high poverty student population, the coeducational school boasted a district funded talented and gifted program that has been in existence for almost two decades. The single gender school had no such offering. The coeducational school also had a more experienced teaching staff, with more teachers holding advanced degrees. The study examined …

Publications

ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) capped with polyvinyl pyrrolidone reveal room temperature ferromagnetism. Incorporation of Al³⁺-ions induce defects in ZnO NCs leading to quenching of excitonic luminescence of ZnO at the cost of an increase in the intensity of oxygen vacancy related emission. Photoluminescence excitation spectra exhibit an additional hump like feature attributed to Al-doping. Saturation magnetization of Al³⁺-doped ZnO NCs is the same as that of the undoped ZnO NCs. However, a remarkable decrease in the coercivity associated with change in the nature of M (T) curve and electron paramagnetic resonance signal with g = 1.96 is …
