Improved Technique For Controlling Oscillation Of Coastal Morphological Modeling System, Yun-Chih Chiang, Sung-Shan Hsiao, Ming-Chung Lin Dec 2011

Improved Technique For Controlling Oscillation Of Coastal Morphological Modeling System, Yun-Chih Chiang, Sung-Shan Hsiao, Ming-Chung Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Numerical modeling of coastal morphological evolution is a powerful tool for the planning and design of coastal engineering. The coastal morphological modeling system is based on the sediment conservation law, which couples modules for waves, wave-driven currents, and sediment transport rates. The numerical scheme for the sediment conservation law and nonlinear coupling between these modules can lead to dispersions, diffusions, spurious oscillations and instability problems that are still not well established. Filtering or artificial diffusion are often added to achieve stability. In this paper, several controlling oscillations schemes without filters are described. A stable morphological model is introduced with a …

Development Of Early Warning Modeling System For Sudden Chemical Spill In Plain River Network, Hai-Long Yin, Zu-Xin Xu, Chen Wang, Da Yu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An early warning modeling system for assessing potential river water quality threat from sudden chemical discharge incidents was developed, based on a hydrodynamic model for tidal plain river network equipped with sluice gates and water quality models. For the hydrodynamic model, the mode to simulate river flow under artificial irreversible gate operation was presented, so that the flow related to gate control with tidal occurrence could be simulated, which was calibrated by the measured data. For the water quality models, three kinds of models including oil spill model, hydrophobic model and hydrophilic model were developed based on chemical properties. With …

Harmonic Decomposition By Hht On Regular Waves Propagating Over A Rectangular Submerged Obstacle Upon A Fluidized Bed, Yung-Lung Chen, Shiaw-Yih Tzang, Shan-Hwei Ou Dec 2011

Harmonic Decomposition By Hht On Regular Waves Propagating Over A Rectangular Submerged Obstacle Upon A Fluidized Bed, Yung-Lung Chen, Shiaw-Yih Tzang, Shan-Hwei Ou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The experimental measurements of surface waves over a submerged rectangular obstacle upon a sandy bed reported by Tzang et al. (2008) have further been analyzed in detail by Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). The harmonic components of regular waves at 5 sites in the vicinity of the obstacle are decomposed into the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) by the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) with postprocessing scheme using masking signal EMD (MSEMD). The results of Hilbert spectrum of waves derived by the HHT illustrate that considerable decay of harmonic amplitude occurs at all 5 sites when the sandy bed have been fluidized but …

Influences Of Discharge Reductions On Salt Water Intrusion And Residual Circulation In Danshuei River, Wen-Cheng Liu, Wei-Bo Chen, Ming-Hsi Hsu Dec 2011

Influences Of Discharge Reductions On Salt Water Intrusion And Residual Circulation In Danshuei River, Wen-Cheng Liu, Wei-Bo Chen, Ming-Hsi Hsu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A three-dimensional, unstructured grid, hydrodynamic model was established and applied to study the salt water intrusion and residual circulation in the Danshuei River estuarine system of northern Taiwan. The construction of two reservoirs (i.e. Shihmen Reservoir and Feitsui Reservoir) and water diversion in the upper reaches of the river system significantly reduces the freshwater inflow. The changes had contributed farther to the intrusion of tidal flow and salt water in the upstream direction. The model was validated with available hydrographic data measured in 2001 then used to probe the change in salt water intrusion as a result of reservoir construction. …

Dynamic Coupling Of Multi-Phase Fluids With A Moving Obstacle, Tso-Ren Wu, Chih-Jung Huang, Mei-Hui Chuang, Chung-Yue Wang, Chia-Ren Chu Dec 2011

Dynamic Coupling Of Multi-Phase Fluids With A Moving Obstacle, Tso-Ren Wu, Chih-Jung Huang, Mei-Hui Chuang, Chung-Yue Wang, Chia-Ren Chu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, we present a two-way coupled moving solid algorithm with discrete element method (DEM) to simulate dynamic fluid-solid interaction. This model allows obstacles moving in the multi-phase fluids to generate realistic motion for both the fluids and obstacles. We discretize the NavierStokes equation using finite volume method (FVM) for the fluid part. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) method is used to track the fluid-fluid and fluid-solid interfaces. This algorithm is useful in the fields of Engineering and Earth Sciences, such as structure collapse and landslide generated tsunamis. Examples of landslide tsunami and floating cubes are demonstrated using the algorithm.

The Method Of Fundemental Solutions For The Multi-Dimensional Wave Equations, Meng-Huang Gu, Chia-Ming Fan, Der-Liang Young Dec 2011

The Method Of Fundemental Solutions For The Multi-Dimensional Wave Equations, Meng-Huang Gu, Chia-Ming Fan, Der-Liang Young

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, a meshless method is developed for solving multi-dimensional wave equations. The proposed method is based on the method of particular solution (MPS), the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) and the Houbolt finite difference (FD) method. The wave equation is considered as a Poisson-type equation with the time-dependent source term. The Houbolt method is applied to avoid the difficult problems for dealing with the initial conditions in forming the linear algebra system. The works of space discretization are dependent on the method of particular solution and the method of fundamental solutions. There are three numerical examples considered in …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Time/Depth Dependent Chloride Diffusion Coefficient In Concrete, Yung-Ming Sun, Ta-Peng Chang, Ming-Te Liang Dec 2011

Sensitivity Analysis Of Time/Depth Dependent Chloride Diffusion Coefficient In Concrete, Yung-Ming Sun, Ta-Peng Chang, Ming-Te Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents the results for a sensitivity analysis of the time/depth dependent chloride diffusion model in concrete using differential analysis techniques. Four governing prameters of the model are taken to determine the sensitivity of the chloride diffusion coefficient: the time of exposure, inspecting depth, surface chloride concentration, and chloride concetration at the inspecting point. The results of this sensitivity analysis are discussed in detail, including variations in the diffusion coefficient according to the four parameters and the implications for durability design of concrete structures.

Evaluation Of The Recovery Time Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax Linnaeus, 1758) Juveniles From Transport And Handling Stress: Using Ammonia Nitrogen Excretion Rates As A Stress Indicator, Betül Kayali, Murat Yigit, Musa Bulut

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A time-course study was conducted in order to evaluate the recovery time of juvenile Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from transport and handling stress. Among metabolite indices, ammonia nitrogen excretion rates were used as stress indicator. The measurements were carried out in water ambience of 13 ± 1ºC under natural light conditions (16L/8D photoperiod). Juveniles were transported for about 2 hours in a fish transport tank with oxygen supply. Handling stress was due to netting at the outlet site during stocking fish into the transport tank and netting at the experimental facility while transferring fish from transport tank into experimental tanks. …

Aging Of Florida Blue Crabs, Callinectes Sapidus, Through The Biochemical Extraction Of Lipofuscin, Claire Elizabeth Crowley Dec 2011

Aging Of Florida Blue Crabs, Callinectes Sapidus, Through The Biochemical Extraction Of Lipofuscin, Claire Elizabeth Crowley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, represents an ecologically and economically important component of marine and estuarine ecosystems. In Florida, blue crab landings accounted for $9.6 million dollars during the 2010 fishing season. Accurate stock assessments for this valuable fishery are essential. Age is a critical biological component of accurate stock assessments; however, blue crabs and other crustaceans are especially difficult to age because of the complex nature of discrete growth. Biochemical extraction of an aging pigment, lipofuscin, was developed using blue crab eyestalks. The current study investigated the effects of freezing preservation on lipofuscin extracts and examined whether the …

Structured Instruments In Corporate Finance Strategy, Joanna Błach Dec 2011

Structured Instruments In Corporate Finance Strategy, Joanna Błach

European Management Studies

Acquiring corporate funds is one of the most important parts of the company's financial strategy. Modern companies, in order to attract investors' attention and enhance them to provide funds, must compete against each other offering investors financial instruments that meet their requirements in terms of the risk-return profile. Financial engineering creating financial innovations provides companies with the wide range of instruments that can help them to raise the required funds. Structured instruments are one of the latest financial developments, however their application is usually analyzed from the investors' point of view. This conceptual paper assumes changes in the way of …
