Since Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1881, families and communities have come to expect that in times of need, the Red Cross will be there for them. But in Picher Oklahoma in the 1930s, the Red Cross extended its generosity past the point it needed to be. The comes a point in time when a community needs to take responsibility of its citizens instead of relying on the handouts of others. Today there are millions of people that take advantage of government systems; this was no different during the hardships of the Great Depression in the 1930s. …

Analysis of the Bunker Interpretive Center (BIC) began during the spring of 2011 with the Engineering 382 Instrumentation Lab. To determine the energy use at the BIC, sensing equipment was placed on 44 different energy consuming devices, ranging from pumps to lights to heating and ventilation (HVAC) equipment. These data were collected over the spring and summer and then analyzed by the Engineering 333 Thermal Systems Design class during the fall of 2011. The class was tasked with determining whether or not the BIC was eligible for Energy Star certification. While the building was built to be LEED Gold certified, …

Discrimination And Aggregative Patterns Among And Between Populations Of Entamoeba Spp., Katelyn M. Higgins

Kin recognition facilitates the evolution of cooperation in animals, but its relevance in microorganisms and their behavior toward relatives remains unclear. The Entamoeba lineage constitutes an ideal model to determine the behavioral and signaling cues needed for aggregative preference. Chemical cues have been reported for E. histolytica but not E. dispar, suggesting cell-communication between con-specifics and behavioral differences with relevance for disease. Entamoeba varieties have been reported as ‘morphologically undistinguishable’. Two strains of E. invadens have been isolated from different hosts (VK-1: NS - Varanus komodoensis and IP1- serpentes) but were classified within the same ‘species’. Trophozoites …

Revises three strikes law to impose life sentence only when new felony conviction is serious or violent. Authorizes re-sentencing for offenders currently serving life sentences if third strike conviction was not serious or violent and judge determines sentence does not pose unreasonable risk to public safety. Continues to impose life sentence penalty if third strike conviction was for certain non-serious, non-violent sex or drug offenses or involved firearm possession. Maintains life sentence penalty for felons with non-serious, non-violent third strike if prior convictions were for rape, murder, or child molestation. Research suggests that males and females communicate using different styles of interaction. Men and women are biologically different, but evidence also demonstrates a social difference. The patterns displayed in cross- sex communication often reveal how men and women interact interpersonally. In conflict situations the contrasting behaviors between the sexes become more evident. This is a collection of research defining and explaining the differences which exist between males and females and how those differences develop within communication. Conflict is a prevalent element of all relationships and the manner in which it is handled is crucial to the survival of those relationships. …

Effect Of Transverse Surface Roughness On The Performance Of Hydromagnetic Squeeze Film Between Conducting Truncated Conical Plates, Pragna Amratlal Vadher, Gunamani Deheri, Rakesh Manilal Patel
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An attempt has been made to study and analyze the behavior of a hydromagnetic squeeze film between conducting porous transversely rough truncated conical plates. The associated Reynolds' equation is solved with appropriate boundary conditions to investigate the behavior of performance characteristics. The results indicate that the performance of the bearing system gets enhanced vis-à-vis a bearing system working with a conventional lubricant. This article reveals that the negative effect induced by porosity and standard deviation can be overcome completely by the positive effect of the magnetization parameter and conductivities by choosing suitable aspect ratio and the semi-vertical angle in the …

Feminine Framing: Framing Theory And The Media's Portrayal Of Female Athletes, Kamber Seay

The biased portrayal of female athletes by the media has been studied and discussed extensively. The Framing Theory hypothesis is used here to identify a correlation between the way female athletes are portrayed by the media and the way consumers frame their opinions based on these portrayals. A brief public opinion survey was given to a random sample of the student population at Coastal Carolina University. Of the 66 consumers surveyed, 51 (77%) stated that they believe there should be more media focused on female athletes. The purpose of this study was to learn about how elementary principals conceptualized instructional leadership and whether the way they thought about leadership influenced their allotted use of time for instructional leadership. In order to answer this question, two sub-questions needed to be answered about how elementary principals conceptualized instructional leadership and how elementary principals perceived they used their time. This mixed-method study interviewed 30 principals in an urban-suburban school district in Utah to produce data. Each principal participated in a newly constructed survey of 84 questions. This qualitative study explores the experiences of female students on study abroad programs, with the aim of answering the following questions: do they face unique challenges as female students (including harassment or assault), how do they avoid or cope with any negative experiences, and can we as language departments better prepare our students to have the best experiences possible? While hospitality started with small inns and bed and breakfasts run out of a family's home, the first hotel was a 73-room property in New York City, which was astronomically larger than consumers were accustomed to, (Withiam, 2000, p. 2) and is considered small by today's standards. Throughout life, at one point or another, most have stayed at a bed and breakfast, timeshare, motel, or hotel.
