Taaffe, Prue Cormie, Nigel Spry, Susan K. Chambers, Carolyn Peddle-Mcintyre, Michael Baker, James Denham, David Joseph, Geoff Groom, Robert Newton
Research outputs 2011
Background: The presence of bone metastases has excluded participation of prostate cancer patients in exercise intervention studies to date and is also a relative contraindication to supervised exercise in the community setting because of concerns of fragility fracture. However, this group of patients often have developed significant muscle atrophy and functional impairments from prior and continuing androgen deprivation that is exacerbated by subsequent and more intensive interventions such as chemotherapy. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of a modular multi-modal exercise program in prostate cancer patients with bone metastases. Methods/Design: Multi-site randomized controlled trial …
Psychological Contracts And Loyal Boosterism: Giving Dance Training Institutions A Lift Through Word Of Mouth Promotion, Alicia Stanway
Psychological Contracts And Loyal Boosterism: Giving Dance Training Institutions A Lift Through Word Of Mouth Promotion, Alicia Stanway
Research outputs 2011
As the dance industry in Australia is well connected with industry networks, the value of word of mouth promotion and peer recommendation (operationalised as loyal boosterism) is paramount; however empirical evidence of this notion is relatively unexplored. This paper explores the relationship between relational psychological contracts, perceptions of psychological contract breach and loyal boosterism in the context of the dance training industry. The findings indicate that dancer’s who report higher relational contracts with their training organisation and experience lower levels of perceived contract breach, are more likely to engage in loyal boosterism behaviour. These findings highlight those relational contracts (containing …

Value At Risk Estimation Using Extreme Value Theory, Abhay K. Singh, David E. Allen, Robert J. Powell
Value At Risk Estimation Using Extreme Value Theory, Abhay K. Singh, David E. Allen, Robert J. Powell
Research outputs 2011
A common assumption in quantitative financial risk modelling is the distributional assumption of normality in the asset’s return series, which makes modelling easy but proves to be inefficient if the data exhibit extreme tails. When dealing with extreme financial events like the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 while quantifying extreme market risk, Extreme Value Theory (EVT) proves to be a natural statistical modelling technique of interest. Extreme Value Theory provides well established statistical models for the computation of extreme risk measures like the Return Level, Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall. In this paper we apply Univariate Extreme Value Theory …
An Emerging Theory Of Apology, Debra J. Slocum, Alfred Allan, Maria M. Allan
An Emerging Theory Of Apology, Debra J. Slocum, Alfred Allan, Maria M. Allan
Research outputs 2011
There is no consensus in the psychological literature regarding the operational definition of an apology, nor is there a comprehensive theory of apology. The object of this study was to use a hermeneutic phenomenological approach and grounded theory methodology to develop a theory of apology based on lay people's interpretation of apologetic responses. Data were methodically gathered by interviewing 23 people who had been wronged by an intimate partner. The analysis of the data suggests that there is not a single discrete definition of an apology, but that it is more appropriate to conceptualise apology as a process that consists …
Plants As Objects: Challenges For An Aesthetics Of Flora, John Charles Ryan
Plants As Objects: Challenges For An Aesthetics Of Flora, John Charles Ryan
Research outputs 2011
This paper presents the conceptual challenges to an aesthetic model of living plants based in embodied interaction with flora through smell, taste, touch, sound and sight. I argue that the science of aesthetics is deterministically visual. Drawing from theories of landscape aesthetics put forth by Carlson and Berleant, I outline four primary obstacles to an embodied aesthetics: plants as objects of sight, plants as objects of art, plants as objects of disinterestedness and plants as objects of scientific discourse. A multi-sensorial aesthetics of flora requires auto-centric proximity and degrees of intersubjectivity between the appreciator and the appreciated plant that raise …

Using Photo-Elicitation To Explore Place Attachment In A Remote Setting, Joanna Tonge, Susan Moore, Maria Ryan, Lynnath Beckley
Research outputs 2011
People are often attracted to unique natural environments, but what makes them continually return to these locations, especially when considerable time and effort are required to get there? This paper discusses the methods and findings of a research project aimed at identifying and exploring how visitors develop an attachment to the remote Ningaloo Marine Park in north-western Australia. This Marine Park attracts a high percentage of repeat visitors (55%) and in order to determine the complex aspects contributing to this attachment, photo-elicitation was employed. Photo-elicitation is a qualitative technique where participants are asked to take photographs relating to the concept …

Reinforcement Learning Of Competitive And Cooperative Skills In Soccer Agents, Jinsong Leng, Chee Lim
Research outputs 2011
The main aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive numerical analysis on the efficiency of various reinforcementlearning (RL) techniques in an agent-based soccer game. The SoccerBots is employed as a simulation testbed to analyze the effectiveness of RL techniques under various scenarios. A hybrid agent teaming framework for investigating agent team architecture, learning abilities, and other specific behaviours is presented. Novel RL algorithms to verify the competitiveandcooperativelearning abilities of goal-oriented agents for decision-making are developed. In particular, the tile coding (TC) technique, a function approximation approach, is used to prevent the state space from growing exponentially, hence avoiding …
The Mechanics Of Caricature And Their Application In The Classroom Through Software, Stuart Medley, Hanadi Haddad
The Mechanics Of Caricature And Their Application In The Classroom Through Software, Stuart Medley, Hanadi Haddad
Research outputs 2011
The human visual system (eyes and brain) has the capacity to understand pictures where detail has been removed. The visual system also has the capacity to understand images that are exaggerated in particular ways. The authors coordinate a university graphic design class centered around vector illustration in which the communicative potential of caricature is explored. The researchers approach to teaching vector illustration is unique in that it departs from the usual crisp, clinical and often geometric aesthetic associated with vector graphics. Instead the authors use the potential enabled in illustration software, specifically layers and object oriented graphics, as a means …

Research outputs 2011
We prepare an all-garnet multilayer film structure by sandwiching a magneto-soft garnet material in between two magneto-hard garnet materials with high bismuth substitution levels using RF magnetron sputtering technique and investigate the microstructure and the effects of magnetostatic inter-layer coupling on magnetic properties. Both types of the Bi-substituted magneto-optic garnet materials used possess excellent optical, magnetic and magneto-optical properties suitable for the application in different new and emerging technologies in optics and photonics. Garnet layers of composition type Bi2Dy1Fe4Ga1O12 have strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Bi1.8Lu1.2Fe3.6Al1.4O12 magneto-soft layer features magnetization behavior similar to that of in-plane magnetized films. The all-garnet …
Adaptive Use Of Thresholding And Multiple Colour Space Representation To Improve Classification Of Mmcc Barcode, Siong Khai Ong, Douglas Chai, Alexander Rassau
Adaptive Use Of Thresholding And Multiple Colour Space Representation To Improve Classification Of Mmcc Barcode, Siong Khai Ong, Douglas Chai, Alexander Rassau
Research outputs 2011
Colour 2D barcodes, such as the MMCC barcode, have been developed recently to improve the data capacity of monochrome barcodes. However, the use of colour imposes greater challenges in decoding the symbols correctly as different lighting conditions on the barcode vary the values of the colours significantly. Hence, it is desirable to have an adaptive classification of the data cells so as to adapt to various lighting conditions. In this paper, we propose a classification method that is able to adapt to different lighting conditions during the classification of the MMCC data cells in a mobile environment. To highlight the …

Model-Based Investigations Of Acidity Sources And Sinks Of A Pit Lake In Western Australia, Mike Mueller, Katja Eulitz, C. D. Mccullough, Mark Lund
Research outputs 2011
Lake Kepwari is a rehabilitated lake in the Collie Basin lignite mining area in Western Australia. The water quality of Lake Kepwari was modeled with the pit lake hydrodynamic and water quality model PITLAKQ. Based on a hydrodynamically validated model, water quality scenarios were used to quantify the sensitivity of different acidity sources including groundwater exchange, surface runoff and erosion, providing new insights into the system. The technique of monthly aggregation of all sources and sinks of acidity, based on detailed model output, provided the basis for useful conclusions. Model results suggest a new focus of field investigations to improve …

Design Of Laser Multi-Beam Generator For Plant Discrimination, Sreten Askraba, Arie Paap, Kamal Alameh, John Rowe
Research outputs 2011
Optimisation of the optical signal from the laser multi-spot beam generator employed in a photonic based real-time plant discrimination sensor for use in selective herbicide spraying systems is presented. The plant detection sensor uses a three-wavelength laser diode module that sequentially emits identically-polarized laser light beams through a common aperture, along one optical path. Each laser beam enters a multi-spot beam generator which produces 15 parallel laser beams over a 240mm span. The intensity of the reflected light from each spot is detected by a high-speed line scan image sensor. Plant discrimination is based on calculating the slope of the …

Individuals With Chronic Low Back Pain Have Greater Difficulty In Engaging In Positive Lifestyle Behaviours Than Those Without Back Pain: An Assessment Of Health Literacy, Andrew Briggs, Joanne Jordan, Peter O'Sullivan, Rachelle Buchbinder, Angus Burnett, Richard Osborne, Leon Straker
Research outputs 2011
Background: Despite the large volume of research dedicated to understanding chronic low back pain (CLBP), patient outcomes remain modest while healthcare costs continue to rise, creating a major public health burden. Health literacy - the ability to seek, understand and utilise health information - has been identified as an important factor in the course of other chronic conditions and may be important in the aetiology of CLBP. Many of the currently available health literacy measurement tools are limited since they measure narrow aspects of health literacy. The Health Literacy Measurement Scale (HeLMS) was developed recently to measure broader elements of …

Climate change and carbon emissions have become an important issue for companies, not only if companies are to maintain legitimacy as good corporate citizens but also financially with the regulation of carbon emissions and the impending introduction of the Australian Emission Trading Scheme (AETS). This paper investigates the role of financial auditors in the climate change debate. Content analysis of the websites of fifteen large auditors in Australia reveals different reactions to this issue, from reacting to proposed legislation to proposing initiatives proactively and providing guidelines for companies. Analysis of the websites from a random sample of companies audited by …
Transitions In Midlife Women's Lives: Contemporary Experiences, Julie Dare
Transitions In Midlife Women's Lives: Contemporary Experiences, Julie Dare
Research outputs 2011
In this article I report on a research project conducted in Perth, Western Australia, which investigated how contemporary women experience physiological and psychosocial midlife transitions. Qualitative in-depth interviews explored the challenges confronting women during this period. In doing so, continuities and divergences that exist between existing literature on midlife transitions and women's own perspectives are highlighted. Based on key findings, I suggest that while most women manage the “classic” transitions of menopause and the “empty nest” relatively well, the impact of divorce and the aging and death of parents present more serious long-term challenges to women.

Review Of Indigenous Offender Health [Journal Article], Jocelyn Grace, Ineke Krom, Caitlin Maling, Tony Butler, Richard Midford
Research outputs 2011
This review provides an overview of health issues facing the Indigenous offender population, including some of the social and historical factors relevant to Indigenous health and incarceration. In doing so, it is important to first understand how Indigenous people conceptualise health. Health as it is understood in western society is a fairly discrete category, which differs from the traditional Indigenous perspective of health as holistic [1]. This is made explicit in the 1989 National Aboriginal health strategy that states 'health to Aboriginal peoples is a matter of determining all aspects of their life, including control over their physical environment, of …
East Asian Financial Crisis Revisited: What Does A Copula Tell?, Pei Fei, Albert Tsui, Zhaoyong Zhang
East Asian Financial Crisis Revisited: What Does A Copula Tell?, Pei Fei, Albert Tsui, Zhaoyong Zhang
Research outputs 2011
We construct a regime-switching model of copulas to capture observed asymmetric dependence in daily changes of exchange rates in five selected East Asian economies during the 1997 financial crisis era. In particular, we investigate the effects of the financial crisis on asymmetric dependence in exchange rates returns and assess the asymmetric relationships between five currencies, including the Singapore Dollar, Japanese Yen, South Korea Won, Thailand Baht and Indonesia Rupiah. Various time-varying copula models will also be applied to examine the possible structural breaks. The results confirm significant changes at the dependence level, tail behaviour and asymmetry structures between returns of …

Correlating The Developmental Test Of Visual Perception -2 (Dtvp And The Test Of Visual Perceptual Skills - Revised (Tvps-R) As Assesssment Tools For Learners With Learning Difficulties, Janet Richmond, K Holland
Research outputs 2011
Learners are often referred to occupational therapists to assess their visual perceptual functioning. It is, therefore, imperative that the occupational therapists use the best assessment tools to obtain accurate and reliable results that lead to effective intervention which will be noticeable in the classroom functioning of these learners. A study was therefore conducted which correlated the results of the Developmental Test of Visual Perception (second edition) (DTVP-2) and the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills Revised (TVPS-R) in a cohort of 173 learners from Grade 1 to Grade 4 (children aged 6 years to 11 years). The learners attend a remedial …

Learning Through Standard English: Cognitive Implications For Post-Pidgin/-Creole Speakers, Ian Malcolm
Research outputs 2011
Despite their (albeit limited) access to Standard Australian English through education, Australian Indigenous communities have maintained their own dialect (Aboriginal English) for intragroup communication and are increasingly using it as a medium of cultural expression in the wider community. Most linguists agree that the most significant early ancestor of Aboriginal English is New South Wales Pidgin, which developed in the first decades after the European occupation of Australia in 1788. Influence of present or past Aboriginal languages can be traced in Aboriginal English both directly and by way of NSW Pidgin and other contact varieties. Recent work in Western Australia …
Embedding And Integrating Language And Academic Skills: An Innovative Approach, Anne J. Harris, Joanna L. Ashton
Embedding And Integrating Language And Academic Skills: An Innovative Approach, Anne J. Harris, Joanna L. Ashton
Research outputs 2011
A growing body of research into the provision of learning support suggests that good practice is exemplified by the integration of language and academic skills (LAS) into specifically targeted core discipline units. There are many reasons offered: that contextualised support picks up weaker students who commonly fail to self-select for voluntary workshops; that students favour contextualised workshops over general workshops, often perceiving the latter to have little relevance to them; that the number of students in Australian universities with English as an additional language (EAL) has increased markedly over the past decade; and that in some units the delivery of …

In this work, we show the implementation of a computer based Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO) and Signal Generator (SG), using the computers soundcard for off- campus AC electronics experiments. The microphone input is used for the DSO, and the speaker jack is used as the SG. In an effort to reduce the cost of implementing the experiment, we examine software available for free online. A small number of applications were compared in terms of their interface and functionality, for both the DSO and SG. With the choice of a suitable app for both the input and the output, simple AC …
Student Opinions On Their Development Of Non-Technical Skills In It Education, W Makasiranondh, S Maj, D Veal
Student Opinions On Their Development Of Non-Technical Skills In It Education, W Makasiranondh, S Maj, D Veal
Research outputs 2011
It is recognized that non-technical or soft skills are a vital part of the IT curriculum and hence are considered to be core curriculum components, particularly in the USA and Australia and is also an important worldwide issue. An extensive analysis within an Australian university context found a mismatch between employer expectations and the university-based instruction in these skills. However, it was noted that this unpreparedness in soft skills may be because students may not have appreciated the importance of these skills – a result confirmed by this study, which used a questionnaire delivered to project students undertaking a range …
Informal Learning In The Workplace: A Review Of The Literature, Megan A. Le Clus
Informal Learning In The Workplace: A Review Of The Literature, Megan A. Le Clus
Research outputs 2011
In the last few decades, the workplace has been increasingly recognised as a legitimate environment for learning new skills and knowledge, which in turn enables workers to participate more effectively in ever-changing work environments. Within theworkplace, there is the potential for continuous learning to occur not only through formal learning initiatives that are associated with training, but also through informal learning opportunities that are embedded within everyday work activities. This paper surveys the growing body of literature on informal learning, makes some critical observations about the importance of informal learning, and explains the various ways that informal learning can occur …
Comparing Australian And Us Corporate Default Risk Using Quantile Regression, David E. Allen, Akhmad R. Kramadibrata, Robert J. Powell, Abhay K. Singh
Comparing Australian And Us Corporate Default Risk Using Quantile Regression, David E. Allen, Akhmad R. Kramadibrata, Robert J. Powell, Abhay K. Singh
Research outputs 2011
The severe bank stresses of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) have underlined the importance of understanding and measuring extreme credit risk. The Australian economy is widely considered to have fared much better than the US and most other major world economies. This paper applies quantile regression and Monte Carlo simulation to the Merton structural credit model to investigate the impact of extreme asset value fluctuations on default probabilities of Australian companies in comparison to the USA. Quantile regression allows modelling of the extreme quantiles of a distribution which allows measurement of capital and PDs at the most extreme points of …

Xtreme Credit Risk Models: Implications For Bank Capital Buffers, David E. Allen, Akhmad R. Kramadibrata, Robert J. Powell, Abhay K. Singh
Research outputs 2011
The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) highlighted the importance of measuring and understanding extreme credit risk. This paper applies Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) techniques, traditionally used in the insurance industry to measure risk beyond a predetermined threshold, to four credit models. For each of the models we use both Historical and Monte Carlo Simulation methodology to create CVaR measurements. The four extreme models are derived from modifications to the Merton structural model (which we term Xtreme-S), the CreditMetrics Transition model (Xtreme-T), Quantile regression (Xtreme-Q), and the author’s own unique iTransition model (Xtreme-i) which incorporates industry factors into transition matrices. For …
Assessing The Dynamic Relationship Between Small And Large Cap Stock Prices, K. Ho, B. Ernst, Zhaoyong Zhang
Assessing The Dynamic Relationship Between Small And Large Cap Stock Prices, K. Ho, B. Ernst, Zhaoyong Zhang
Research outputs 2011
The historical long-run return on small capitalization stocks has unquestionably outperformed large capitalization stocks since 1926. The phenomenon of small capitalization stocks having higher risk- adjusted returns compared with large capitalization stocks is an equity market anomaly first discovered in 1981. Since then, many academics and investors have strongly argued that “size is dead”. This paper argues that far from being dead, the phenomenon of size effect appears alive and well and it could be exploited effectively over long-term investment horizons. To analyze this phenomenon, we focus specifically on the dynamics of small cap and large cap prices. We test …

Credit Risk Measurement Methodologies, David Allen, Robert Powell
Research outputs 2011
The significant problems experienced by banks during the Global Financial Crisis have highlighted the critical importance of measuring and providing for credit risk. This paper will examine four popular methods used in the measurement of credit risk and provide an analysis of the relative shortcomings and advantages of each method. The study includes external ratings approaches, financial statement analysis models, the Merton / KMV structural model, and the transition based models of CreditMetrics and CreditPortfolioView. Each model assesses different cr iteria, and an understanding of the merits and disadvantages of the various models can assist banks and other credit modellers …
