Green Banking, Amy Kalloch, Bonnie Bachman Jan 2011

Green Banking, Amy Kalloch, Bonnie Bachman

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Executive Summary Green banking is generally defined as promoting environmentally friendly practices that aid customers in reducing their carbon footprint through their banking operation activities. These practices include such things as online banking, statements, bill payments, and account opening. Banks also invest in internal initiatives to reduce their own carbon footprint. The majority of programs consist of energy efficiency, recycling, ride sharing, and environmentally friendly lending. Banks that support the local community and environment are seen as leaders in this movement. Many online banks and smaller community banks are seen as 'greener' than the large corporate financial institutions. One criticism …

The Map Of Medicine: A Review Of Evidence For Its Impact On Healthcare., Nicola Brennan, Karen Mattick, Tricia Ellis Jan 2011

The Map Of Medicine: A Review Of Evidence For Its Impact On Healthcare., Nicola Brennan, Karen Mattick, Tricia Ellis

Peninsula Medical School

OBJECTIVES: Map of Medicine is an evidence-based online clinical knowledge resource. Procured at significant cost by healthcare providers in the UK, Sweden and Denmark, it is important to establish the beneficial impact that investment has had on healthcare practise and, ultimately, on patient outcomes. The objective of this study is to review the evidence for the impact of the Map of Medicine on clinical practice. METHODS: A systematic review of peer-reviewed and grey literature was conducted. Nine healthcare databases, Google Scholar and Google were searched for articles containing the terms 'map of medicine'. RESULTS: The search identified 133 articles. Eleven …

Exploring The Map Of Medicine's Potential In Undergraduate Medical Education., Nicola Brennan, Karen Mattick

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: Map of Medicine is a web-based knowledge resource depicting evidence-based pathways of patient care. Recent publications suggest a possible role for the Map of Medicine as a training tool in postgraduate education. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore the potential of the Map of Medicine to enhance undergraduate medical education. METHODS: A mixed-method study including a survey of UK medical schools, and the embedding of the resource at one medical school and the evaluation of its impact. RESULTS: The survey found that only 1 of 23 medical schools was using the Map of Medicine in its …

The Psychology Of Stroke In Young Adults: The Roles Of Service Provision And Return To Work, Reg Morris Jan 2011

The Psychology Of Stroke In Young Adults: The Roles Of Service Provision And Return To Work, Reg Morris

School of Psychology

Literature about the psychological consequences of stroke in those under 65 is reviewed focussing on services and work. Despite similarities, young and old survivors have different experiences and needs. These are attributable to the effects of stroke on age-normative roles and activities, self-image, and the young person's stage in the life-cycle, especially family and work. “Hidden” cognitive impairments, a disrupted sense of self, and the incongruity of suffering an “older person's” disease are salient. Young survivors benefit from services, but experience lack of congruence between their needs and service philosophy, methods, and aims, and consequently have unmet needs. Employment is …

How Smartphones Are Changing The Face Of Mobile And Participatory Healthcare: An Overview, With Example From Ecaalyx, M Boulos, S Wheeler, C Tavares, R Jones

School of Nursing and Midwifery

The latest generation of smartphones are increasingly viewed as handheld computers rather than as phones, due to their powerful on-board computing capability, capacious memories, large screens and open operating systems that encourage application development. This paper provides a brief state-of-the-art overview of health and healthcare smartphone apps (applications) on the market today, including emerging trends and market uptake. Platforms available today include Android, Apple iOS, RIM BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows (Windows Mobile 6.x and the emerging Windows Phone 7 platform). The paper covers apps targeting both laypersons/patients and healthcare professionals in various scenarios, e.g., health, fitness and lifestyle education and …

A Web-Based Learning Module For Teaching Gis Within The Context Of Environmental Engineering, Sirjana Dahal, Richard H. Hall, Glenn Morrison, Seth Paul Lamble, Ronaldo Luna

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is a Growing Need for Teaching Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in Engineering Disciplines, Such as Environmental. However, There Has Been Limited Focus on GIS in Undergraduate Programs, Since It's Difficult to Fit a GIS Class into the Large Number of Class Requirements Already Included in Engineering Curricula. the Purpose of This Research is the Evaluation of Web-Based Learning Module Created by a Multidisciplinary Team at a Midwestern Technological Research University, Which Allows Instructors to Integrate GIS Instruction into Existing Courses. This Module is One Part of a Large-Scale National Science Foundation Funded Project in Which GIS Modules Are Being …

Peninsula Medical School

Introduction It is widely recognised that many patients do not take prescribed medicines as advised. Research in this field has commonly focused on the role of the patient in non-adherence; however, healthcare professionals can also have a major influence on patient behaviour in taking medicines. This study examines the perceptions, beliefs and behaviours of healthcare professionals—doctors, pharmacists and nurses—about patient medication adherence. Methods and analysis This paper describes the study protocol and online questionnaire used in a cross-sectional survey of healthcare professionals in Europe. The participating countries include Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, The Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The present study investigated the impact of narcotic administration on quantity and frequency of recidivism by patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with a primary complaint of chronic pain. This study explored the relationship between narcotic administration, gender, prescribing physician and subsequent ED visits. We analyzed the data from the twelve months of medical records for 80 patients (278 visits) who presented at the ED of a general medical center in a rural area. Results indicated that the number of visits by those who received narcotics was significantly higher than for those who did not receive narcotics. There was …

Numerical Investigation Of Deep Water Circulation In The Faroese Channels, Nataliya Stashchuk, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Toby J. Sherwin Jan 2011

Numerical Investigation Of Deep Water Circulation In The Faroese Channels, Nataliya Stashchuk, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Toby J. Sherwin

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The overflow of dense water from the Nordic Seas through the Faroese Channels is investigated numerically using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model. The model is forced by the removal of a barrier that separates different water masses in the bottom layer of the Faroe-Shetland Channel at the north-eastern boundary. An analysis of the output reveals that during its adjustment in the rotating channel the propagating flow is unstable and forms cyclonic and anti-cyclonic eddies in the Faroese Channels. The life-time of the cyclonic eddy is about 10 days, but an anti-cyclonic eddy that is formed upstream of …
