Was Mechanization De-Skilling? The Origins Of Task-Biased Technical Change, James Bessen Jan 2011

Was Mechanization De-Skilling? The Origins Of Task-Biased Technical Change, James Bessen

Faculty Scholarship

Did nineteenth century technology reduce demand for skilled workers in contrast to modern technology? I obtain direct evidence on human capital investments and the returns to skill by using micro-data on individual weavers and an engineering production function. Weavers learned substantially on the job. While mechanization eliminated some tasks and the associated skills, it increased returns to skill on the remaining tasks. Technical change was task-biased, much as with computer technology. As more tasks were automated, weavers’ human capital increased substantially. Although technology increased the demand for skill like today, weavers’ wages eventually increased and inequality decreased, contrary to current …

Ethical Issues In Business And The Lawyer's Role, Robert Rhee, Carol Morgan, Tamar Frankel, Mark Fagan

Faculty Scholarship

Q&A with Robert Rhee, Carol Morgan, Tamar Frankel, and Mark Fagan regarding courses focused on business ethics.

/="/">

Good afternoon everyone. I am Carol Morgan. I am with the University of Georgia School of Law's Business Law and Ethics program. I'm joined today by very distinguished panelists, Tamar Frankel from Boston University and Robert Rhee from the University of Maryland. You will hear a lot more about them during our program today. I am glad to see this interest in the topic of business ethics. Law schools have not traditionally put a lot of attention or focus on the subject …

Cancer immunoediting is the process whereby the immune system suppresses neoplastic growth and shapes tumor immunogenicity. We previously reported that type I interferon (IFN-α/β) plays a central role in this process and that hematopoietic cells represent critical targets of type I IFN's actions. However, the specific cells affected by IFN-α/β and the functional processes that type I IFN induces remain undefined. Herein, we show that type I IFN is required to initiate the antitumor response and that its actions are temporally distinct from IFN-γ during cancer immunoediting. Using mixed bone marrow chimeric mice, we demonstrate that type I IFN sensitivity …

Cells undergoing programmed cell death (apoptosis) are removed in situ by macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs) through a specialized form of phagocytosis (efferocytosis). In the lung, there are two primary DC subsets with the potential to migrate to the local lymph nodes (LNs) and initiate adaptive immune responses. In this study, we show that only CD103(+) DCs were able to acquire and transport apoptotic cells to the draining LNs and cross present apoptotic cell-associated antigen to CD8 T cells. In contrast, both the CD11b(hi) and the CD103(+) DCs were able to ingest and traffic latex beads or soluble antigen. CD103(+) …

Invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT cells) are critical for host defense against a variety of microbial pathogens. However, the central question of how iNKT cells are activated by microbes has not been fully explained. The example of adaptive MHC-restricted T cells, studies using synthetic pharmacological α-galactosylceramides, and the recent discovery of microbial iNKT cell ligands have all suggested that recognition of foreign lipid antigens is the main driver for iNKT cell activation during infection. However, when we compared the role of microbial antigens versus innate cytokine-driven mechanisms, we found that iNKT cell interferon-γ production after in vitro stimulation or …

Barth Syndrome Mutations That Cause Tafazzin Complex Lability, Steven M. Claypool, Kevin Whited, Santi Srijumnong, Xianlin Han, Carla M. Koehler

Deficits in mitochondrial function result in many human diseases. The X-linked disease Barth syndrome (BTHS) is caused by mutations in the tafazzin gene TAZ1. Its product, Taz1p, participates in the metabolism of cardiolipin, the signature phospholipid of mitochondria. In this paper, a yeast BTHS mutant tafazzin panel is established, and 18 of the 21 tested BTHS missense mutations cannot functionally replace endogenous tafazzin. Four BTHS mutant tafazzins expressed at low levels are degraded by the intermembrane space AAA (i-AAA) protease, suggesting misfolding of the mutant polypeptides. Paradoxically, each of these mutant tafazzins assembles in normal protein complexes. Furthermore, in the …

Harold Burson is the founder of Burson-Marsteller, a New York-based public relations firm, and has been recognized by PRWeek as "the century's most influential PR figure." He has received numerous awards from different organizations, run one of the largest public relations firm in the world, helped the field of public relations become a prominent profession and was one of the first individuals to push for international firms among other things. Harvesting Intellectual Property: Inspired Beginnings And 'Work-Makes-Work,' Two Stages In The Creative Processes Of Artists And Innovators, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

This Article is part of a larger empirical study based on face-to-face interviews with artists, scientists, engineers, their lawyers, agents, and business partners. The book-length project involves the collecting and analysis of stories from artists, scientists, and engineers about how and why they create and innovate. It also collects stories from their employers, business partners, managers, and lawyers about their role in facilitating the process of creating and innovating. The book’s aim is to make sense of the intersection between intellectual property law and creative and innovative activity, specifically to discern how intellectual property intervenes in the careers of the …
