Effects Of Smoking Locations And Room Ventilation On Occupant Exposure To Environmental Tobacco Smoke, Chaloemchai Mukthawat, Maneerat Ongwandee, Nida Chaimoon Jan 2011

Effects Of Smoking Locations And Room Ventilation On Occupant Exposure To Environmental Tobacco Smoke, Chaloemchai Mukthawat, Maneerat Ongwandee, Nida Chaimoon

Applied Environmental Research

Non smoker exposure to second hand smoke is still of concern even though smoking free environments have been implemented in public places in Thailand. Thus, smokers have changed their behavior to smoke in their dwellings instead which could cause pollutant transfers from a smoking area to an adjacent non smoking area by air flows between zones. The objective of this study was to investigate relative magnitudes of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in a non smoking area that is adjacent to a smoking residential area. The study was also to demonstrate the effect of room ventilation rates on exposure levels of …

Do Sex Offender Registration And Notification Laws Affect Criminal Behavior?, J. J. Prescott, Jonah E. Rockoff

Articles

Sex offenders have become the targets of some of the most far-reaching and novel crime legislation in the U.S. Two key innovations in recent decades have been registration and notification laws which, respectively, require that convicted sex offenders provide valid contact information to law enforcement authorities, and that information about sex offenders be made public. Using the evolution of state law during the 1990s and 2000s, we study how registration and notification affect the frequency of reported sex offenses and the incidence of such offenses across victims. We find evidence that registration reduces the frequency of sex offenses by providing …

Provigil: A Commentary, Daniel A. Crane Jan 2011

Provigil: A Commentary, Daniel A. Crane

Articles

Michael Carrier's case study on Provigil' offers new support for the view that Big Pharma is to blame for stymieing competition, retarding innovation, and inflating prices in the drug industry. Carrier argues that Cephalon was able to thwart generic entry by a combination of anticompetitive strategies. It entered into a reverse payment settlement agreement with generics seeking to enter the market. These settlements purported to allow generic entry before the expiration of the patent period, but, according to Carrier, the promise of early entry was negated by the second prong of Cephalon's anticompetitive strategy. During the time that it had …

Readers' Copyright, Jessica D. Litman Jan 2011

Readers' Copyright, Jessica D. Litman

Articles

My goal in this project is to reclaim copyright for readers (and listeners, viewers, and other members of the audience). I think, and will try to persuade you, that the gradual and relatively recent disappearance of readers’ interests from the core of copyright’s perceived goals has unbalanced the copyright system. It may have prompted, at least in part, the scholarly critique of copyright that has fueled copyright lawyers’ impression that “so many in academia side with the pirates.” It may also be responsible for much of the deterioration in public support for copyright. I argue here that copyright seems out …

Disentangling Administrative Searches, Eve Brensike Primus Jan 2011

Disentangling Administrative Searches, Eve Brensike Primus

Articles

Everyone who has been screened at an international border, scanned by an airport metal detector, or drug tested for public employment has been subjected to an administrative search. Since September 11th, the government has increasingly invoked the administrative search exception to justify more checkpoints, unprecedented subway searches, and extensive wiretaps. As science and technology advance, the frequency and scope of administrative searches will only expand. Formulating the boundaries and requirements of administrative search doctrine is therefore a matter of great importance. Yet the rules governing administrative searches are notoriously unclear. This Article seeks to refocus attention on administrative searches and …

Military Entrepreneurs: Patterns In Latin America, Kristina Mani Jan 2011

Military Entrepreneurs: Patterns In Latin America, Kristina Mani

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Despite the recent shift to democratic regimes and market-based economies, in many Latin American countries the military retains important economic roles as owner, manager, and stakeholder in economic enterprises. Such military entrepreneurship poses a challenge to the development of democratic civil-military relations and, by extension, to the development of liberal democracy in the region. While scholars have noted this situation with concern, they have given little attention to distinguishing the different types of military entrepreneurship, which reflect distinct historical patterns and implications. This article identifies two major types of military entrepreneurs in Latin America: industrializers, determined to build national defense …

International Human Rights, A "Foolproof" Death Penalty Act, And The Politics Of Capital Punishment, Russell G. Murphy Jan 2011

International Human Rights, A "Foolproof" Death Penalty Act, And The Politics Of Capital Punishment, Russell G. Murphy

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

A majority of American states recognize the death penalty as a lawful and constitutional sentence for the most serious crimes committed by the most dangerous and blameworthy criminals. However, in recent years, numerous flaws in capital punishment systems have caused courts in the United States to reverse death sentences. Over one hundred death row inmates have been exonerated and released from prison. These same problems – racial bias, untrustworthy evidence, police and prosecutor misconduct, jury malfunctioning – have been joined with more philosophical notions of the limits of government and respect for human dignity to make capital punishment a human …

Exclusion From Income Of Compensation For Services And Pooling Of Labor Occurring In A Noncommercial Setting, Douglas A. Kahn Jan 2011

Exclusion From Income Of Compensation For Services And Pooling Of Labor Occurring In A Noncommercial Setting, Douglas A. Kahn

Articles

When cash is received for services, it typically will constitute gross income to the recipient.' But what if the payments are made in a noncommercial setting such as the payment by a parent to a child for mowing the lawn or performing household chores? As discussed later in this Essay, there are reasons to conclude that such payments do not constitute income. The problem of how to treat receipts from a noncommercial activity frequently arises in the context of an exchange of services. A similar problem arises when services are provided by several persons pursuant to a pooling of labor …

The New Climate Metric: The Sustainable Corporation And Energy, Steven Ferrey Jan 2011

The New Climate Metric: The Sustainable Corporation And Energy, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The globalization of commerce is manifest. The modern mission statement of many US corporations is to compete in global markets. In this article, first, we define what is “sustainable” in the modern corporate context. Like other new terms employed in recent government environmental regulations, such as “additionality” (see S. Ferrey, When 1 + 1 No Longer Equals 2: The New Math of Legal "Additionality" Controlling World and U.S. Global Warming Regulation, 10 MINN. J.L. SCI. & TECH. 591 (2009)), the reality may be in the "eye of the beholder" – or at least, the regulator. This article examines measurement …

Long-Term Monitoring Of The Nw Atlantic Through Altimetry And An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, Jessica Shaughnessy Worst

Open Access Master's Theses

Monitoring long-term variability in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream provides insight into the larger-scale gyre circulation in the Atlantic including northward heat and mass transport by the western boundary current. The containership M/V Oleander has an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) attached to its hull and has measured upper-ocean current during its weekly route between New Jersey and Bermuda since late 1992. The transit covers three distinct regions of the northwest Atlantic including the Slope Sea, Gulf Stream, and Sargasso Sea. The 16-year ADCP record provides an excellent data set to create a mean geostrophic sea surface height (SSH) …

The Effects Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Inositol Pathway Mutants, Daniel Antonio Colon Hidalgo, Marlene Murray-Nseula Jan 2011

The Effects Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Inositol Pathway Mutants, Daniel Antonio Colon Hidalgo, Marlene Murray-Nseula

Honors Theses

Bipolar disease is a severe and chronic debilitating mental disorder affecting 1-3% of the population. Omega-3-fatty acids have been shown to relieve symptoms of bipolar disorder and are not associated with the negative side effects of lithium and valproate, two of the commonly used drugs for treating this condition. The mechanism of action of omega-3-fatty acids remains unknown. Therefore the purpose of this study was to determine if, like lithium and valproate, omega-3-fatty acids affect inositol metabolism. This was accomplished by investigating the effect of the omega-3-fatty acid docosahexanoic acid (DHA) on the growth of inositol pathway mutants. To measure …

Determining The Outcome Of Legal Grievances: An Application Of Game Theory To Tort Negotiations, Tyler Bodi Jan 2011

Determining The Outcome Of Legal Grievances: An Application Of Game Theory To Tort Negotiations, Tyler Bodi

Honors Theses

I will begin my work with a description of the legal negotiation process in tort law. Next, I will explain the key facets and usefulness of game theory. Third, I will suggest how game theory might be applied to the legal negotiation of torts and solved in any particular tort case. Finally I will confirm that the elements of my model are, first, the definitive parts in the legal negotiation process, and second, part of a cohesive and complete game.

Dermal Reduction Of Urushiols Using An Activated Charcoal Formulated Dermal Care Patch, Celena Cameron Jan 2011

Dermal Reduction Of Urushiols Using An Activated Charcoal Formulated Dermal Care Patch, Celena Cameron

Honors Theses

For centuries, activated Charcoal (AC) has been used externally in a poultice form to adsorb "poisons" trapped in the outer layers of skin and internally to relieve intestinal discomfort and to remove toxic materials. The largest use for activated charcoal, in our society, is as a filter bed in air and water remediation cartridges. Recently, scientists have formulated AC into a nonstick dermal bandage called the Charcoal Patch (CP), but the adsorption properties are not well understood for this new formulation. Experiments have been conducted to see if these dermal bandages can be used to adsorb oils such as poison …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Imino Stilbenes, Shieun Jang Jan 2011

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Imino Stilbenes, Shieun Jang

Honors Theses

We are in the process of developing a two-step synthesis of imino stilbenes as potential molecular switches, which are important in biology, electronics and other applications especially at nanoscopic scale. While both imines and stilbenes are well known, we have not uncovered any prior research and documentation on our proposed imino stilbenes in the scientific literature. In pursuit of our goal we have developed a new procedure for synthesis of t-butyl imines derived from aromatic aldehydes and ketones. We are also currently evaluating four different stilbene synthesis methods. Future work will systematically investigate the effect of electron withdrawing and donating …

An ‘Information Literacy’ Perspective Of The Creation/Evolution Debate, Terry Dwain Robertson Jan 2011

An ‘Information Literacy’ Perspective Of The Creation/Evolution Debate, Terry Dwain Robertson

Faculty Publications

The conventional information literacy standards do not suffice for engaging the creation/evolution debate. The data is inconclusive about which approach is more likely; neither theory can be validated any more than the other. Both theories appeal to a recognized authority.

Synthesis And Testing Of Second Generation Azatilbenes, Maurice Hardy Jan 2011

Synthesis And Testing Of Second Generation Azatilbenes, Maurice Hardy

Honors Theses

Based on previous research, azastilbenes have been reported as effective chemical sensors for organophosphates and organothiophosphates; they are related classes and the active components of agricultural pesticides, environmental pollutants and chemical warfare agents. This project builds on previous work and involves the synthesis of a variety of these azastilbenes and the testing of their respective properties. Azastilbene sensors are prepared using high-yield organic synthetic methodology developed in Professor Murray's lab. The next step involves testing the sensors through a measure, by UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorometry, of an optical change upon the addition of analyte to a solution containing azastilbene sensor.

The Effects Of Valproate Prodrugs On The Inositol Biosynthetic Pathway In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Yeast, Lisa Thompson Jan 2011

The Effects Of Valproate Prodrugs On The Inositol Biosynthetic Pathway In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Yeast, Lisa Thompson

Honors Theses

Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by episodes of abnormally elevated mood followed by periods of extreme depression. Currently, valproate is one of the drugs used to treat the disorder but it is associated with many negative side effects. The goal of this project is to create a prodrug with structural similarities to valproate and determine if its effect on growth of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is similar to that of valproate. Yeast cells were grown in media with or without the prodrug in the presence or absence of inositol. The results showed that the prodrug inhibited growth.

Religious & Political Attitudes Towards Women In Power, Jason T. Miller Jan 2011

Religious & Political Attitudes Towards Women In Power, Jason T. Miller

Honors Theses

This paper examines the influences of religious and political attitudes on attitudes towards women in power. Specifically, I measure the ideology and general favorability of Conservative Christians (Seventhday Adventists) towards various political candidates and ideological positions. This question is worth analyzing, considering relatively recent events regarding the role of women in politics and corresponding discussion in religious circles on the role of women in church leadership. A survey method was used to test whether there is a relationship between attitudes towards women in power in politics (female political candidates) and women in power in religion (women's ordination), as well as …

Simultaneous Digital Demodulation And Rds Extraction Of Fm Radio Signals, Jonathan Ford Jan 2011

Simultaneous Digital Demodulation And Rds Extraction Of Fm Radio Signals, Jonathan Ford

Honors Theses

FM radio plays a large part in many peoples' lives. A digital stream of information known as the Radio Data System (RDS) can be transmitted alongside the audio signal in an FM radio broadcast. This digital signal may contain information such as the current song, traffic alerts, and emergency notices. Using MATLAB, a method is presented by which the RDS data may be digitally extracted from multiple FM broadcasts simultaneously. This method's parallel nature makes Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology, such as a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), an ideal platform for implementation.

Enhanced Interlayer Exchange Coupling In Co/Fe/Mgo/Fe(001), Andrew Hoff Jan 2011

Enhanced Interlayer Exchange Coupling In Co/Fe/Mgo/Fe(001), Andrew Hoff

Honors Theses

We investigate the bilinear and biquadratic interlayer exchange coupling in Co/Fe/MgO/Fe(001). Samples are grown through molecular beam epitaxy and the interlayer exchange coupling is measured through magneto-optic Kerr effect along wedge samples. By varying the location of Fe impurities between the interface and middle of the MgO spacer, we find that the couplings are enhanced and are dependent on the location of the impurities. We found that the interfacial impurities created a larger impact across all thickness on the bilinear coupling than no impurities or impurities in the middle of the MgO. The biquadratic coupling didn't have a clear trend.

Performance Analysis Of Beethoven's Violin Sonata Op.23: Freedom Of Interpretation In Passages Of Formal Anomaly, Arielle E. Cady Jan 2011

Performance Analysis Of Beethoven's Violin Sonata Op.23: Freedom Of Interpretation In Passages Of Formal Anomaly, Arielle E. Cady

Honors Theses

Beethovens Violin and Piano Sonata Op. 23 in A minor is a multi-movement sonata that has three unexpected formal events: two occurring in the Presto (movement one) and one in the Allegro Molto (movement three). These formal anomalies, discovered through the creation of form diagrams, present potentially challenging moments of interpretation for performers. The question this project addresses is whether or not the three areas of formal anomaly allow performers more freedom in personal interpretation than normative formal events. The results of this research show that performers do take additional freedom in interpretation during such unexpected formal events.

Non-Labeled, Real-Time Detection Of H1n1 Dna Hybridization Using Combined Qcm-D System, Sandra P. Prieto Jan 2011

Non-Labeled, Real-Time Detection Of H1n1 Dna Hybridization Using Combined Qcm-D System, Sandra P. Prieto

Honors Theses

Detection of H1N1 or other seasonal and highly contagious viruses are of vital importance, since early diagnosis from a patient's fluid, such as saliva, would accelerate treatment and containment of the flu. Current lab tests often require cumbersome labeling steps and several hours to detect the presence of viral DNAs. The QCM-D (quartz crystal microbalances with dissipation) technology was used to detect presence as well as distinguish H1N1 and H1N5 DNAs in real-time (a few minutes) with the use of relatively small sample volume (200-500 ul). Single stranded complementary H1N1 DNA was immobilized via Neutravidin-biotin linkage on a gold substrate …

The Important Role And Benefits Of Academic Research In Musical Interpretation: An Application To The Performance Study Of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Denny Hong Jan 2011

The Important Role And Benefits Of Academic Research In Musical Interpretation: An Application To The Performance Study Of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Denny Hong

Honors Theses

The ultimate duty of a performing musician is to share a transcendental experience of aural artwork with society. Before doing so, the musician is obligated to conduct thorough research on the cultural, historical, and artistic components of the repertoire in order to create a holistic picture that can then be used to shape a convincing and thoughtful interpretation. My study explores and analyzes the creative tools and analytical methods involved in musical interpretation as applied to my own personal interpretation of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition through public performance. My goal is to validate the multifaceted benefits that research …
