Quasi-Steady Capillarity-Driven Flows In Slender Containers With Interior Edges, Mark M. Weislogel, J. Alex Baker, Ryan M. Jenson Jan 2011

Quasi-Steady Capillarity-Driven Flows In Slender Containers With Interior Edges, Mark M. Weislogel, J. Alex Baker, Ryan M. Jenson

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the absence of significant body forces the passive manipulation of fluid interfacial flows is naturally achieved by control of the specific geometry and wetting properties of the system. Numerous 'microfluidic' systems on Earth and 'macrofluidic' systems aboard spacecraft routinely exploit such methods and the term ‘capillary fluidics’ is used to describe both length-scale limits. In this work a collection of analytic solutions is offered for passive and weakly forced flows where a bulk capillary liquid is slowly drained or supplied by a faster capillary flow along at least one interior edge of the container. The solutions are enabled by …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

To bridge the gaps between traditional mesoscale modeling and microscale modeling, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), in collaboration with other agencies and research groups, has developed an integrated urban modeling system coupled to the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model as a community tool to address urban environmental issues. The core of this WRF/urban modeling system consists of: 1) three methods with different degrees of freedom to parameterize urban surface processes, ranging from a simple bulk parameterization to a sophisticated multi-layer urban canopy model with an indoor outdoor exchange sub-model that directly interacts with the atmospheric boundary layer, …

Statistical Analysis When The Data Is An Image: Eliciting Student Thinking About Sampling And Variability, Tamara J. Moore, Margret Hjalmarson, Robert Delmas Jan 2011

Statistical Analysis When The Data Is An Image: Eliciting Student Thinking About Sampling And Variability, Tamara J. Moore, Margret Hjalmarson, Robert Delmas

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Within statistics education, there is a growing interest in understanding students' application of understanding about variability and sampling given the relative lack of research in either area (Shaughnessy, 2007). The task examined in this paper elicited students' knowledge of these concepts within a small-group problem solving task completed by teams of first-year engineering students. In the Nanoroughness task, teams of students designed a procedure for quantifying the roughness of a material surface using digital images generated by atomic force microscopy. The procedure required students to apply statistical methods in order to aggregate the data. The focus of this article is …

Jewish Identity And Interaction In The American South, Amelia Bartlett Gamble Jan 2011

Jewish Identity And Interaction In The American South, Amelia Bartlett Gamble

Honors Theses

There once was a significant Jewish population that settled throughout the South and made a life as prominent members of their communities. I wanted to know what life was like for these people, and I wanted to know why the Jewish population dwindled over time in the South. In short, I wanted to learn about the Southern Jewish experience. I read many scholarly articles about Jews in the South in order to see Jews in a historical context, and I relied on memoirs and autobiographies to provide personal accounts. I also watched documentaries on Jews in the South in order …

The Pendulum's Dance With Dictatorship And Democracy: A Look At Journalistic Successes And Failures Of The Twentieth Century Spanish Press, Margaret Whitaker Hutter Jan 2011

The Pendulum's Dance With Dictatorship And Democracy: A Look At Journalistic Successes And Failures Of The Twentieth Century Spanish Press, Margaret Whitaker Hutter

Honors Theses

The Spanish press has been compared by some to a pendulum, oscillating back and forth between a free press and a press subject to complete censorship by the Spanish government. This thesis is a study of the twentieth-century Spanish press between the years 1939 and 1989. In it I examine the swinging of the pendulum of the Spanish press between the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, the transition to democracy, and throughout the first decade of the established democratic Spanish state. I take a critical look at the journalistic successes, failures and trends of the Spanish press throughout this 50-year scope …

Policies Addressing Obesity: A Comparison Of South Korea And The United States, Sarah Elizabeth Rogers

Honors Theses

The purpose of this project is to compare the actions taken by South Korea, one of the countries with the lowest obesity rate, and the United States, one of the countries with the highest obesity rate, and analyze the programs to draw lessons from which we can learn. Through this thesis project, I address the problem of the increasing prevalence of obesity in the United States, present information from available literature, compare the current programs and nutrition policies in South Korea and the United States, and justify ethical government intervention into nutrition. From the comparison between these countries and their …

Play By The Rules: An Allegroical Respons To The Contemporary Problems Faced By The Print Journalism Industry, Thomas Koonce Sanders Jan 2011

Play By The Rules: An Allegroical Respons To The Contemporary Problems Faced By The Print Journalism Industry, Thomas Koonce Sanders

Honors Theses

My purpose for writing this type of thesis is to be to engage the reader first and foremost. Any attempt at allegoiy or personal opinion is immediately lost without an entertaining and believable stoiy. I sincerely believe that the best pieces of writing are the ones that inspire change rather than just advocating it. As with any work of fiction, hopefully the readers can find some amount of truth in the storytelling and apply it to their lives. In the case of Play by the Rules, even if the allegory seems brittle, I also hope as an author that readers …

Quintessense: B.F.A. Painting Exhibit, Sarah Elizabeth Story Jan 2011

Quintessense: B.F.A. Painting Exhibit, Sarah Elizabeth Story

Honors Theses

I have entitled this series Quintessence because it is defined as the pure and concentrated essence of a substance, the most perfect embodiment of something. As a result my subject matter is simplified to its most basic state without losing its Identity. This allows for a new awareness of a familiar object. By choosing subjects with crystal-like surfaces, the Interior emerges when light passes through it. The blending of colors creates beautiful distortions that alter our perception of what we see. Through close observation, what Is seen within the form are abstractions, transforming the viewer’s recognition of the image. The …

Variation In Enzymatic Capabilities Of Ectomycorrhizal Fungi Along A Loblolly Pine Successional Gradient, Becky Anne Brasher Jan 2011

Variation In Enzymatic Capabilities Of Ectomycorrhizal Fungi Along A Loblolly Pine Successional Gradient, Becky Anne Brasher

Honors Theses

Ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM) are abundant symbionts of trees in many dominant terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, ECM communities are speciose and vary in composition over time and space. However, we still understand surprisingly little about variation in function of different ECM species, and thus the consequences of variation in ECM community composition. I studied variation in ECM community composition and enzymatic activities on the roots of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) along a successional gradient from an old field to a second-growth mixed forest in northern Mississippi. I sought to determine not only whether ECM communities changed along the gradient, but also whether …

Investigations Of Bite Force In Northern Gulf Of Mexico Shark Species, With Emphasis On Blacknose And Sharpnose Sharks, Martha Frances Dalton

Honors Theses

Bite force was investigated for nine shark species common to the waters of the Northern Gulf of Mexico using a bite force meter developed for this study. The two primary species examined in this study were blacknose, {Corcharhinus acronotus) and sharpnose (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae) sharks. Other species examined included blacktip (Corcharhinus limbatus), spinner (Corcharhinus brevipinna), finetooth (Corcharhinus isodon), sandbar (Corcharhinus plumbeus), bull (Corcharhinus leucus), tiger (Galeocerdo cuvieri), and bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo) sharks. Absolute bite force values ranged from 0.9 to 11.79 kg for blacknose, 0.05 to 5.44 kg for sharpnose, 1.36 to 11.34 for blacktip, 1.36 to 5.90 kg for spinner, …

Making A Difference Through Design, Haley Brooke Hill Jan 2011

Making A Difference Through Design, Haley Brooke Hill

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I discuss the following four novels: Meridian by Alice Walker, Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine by Bebe Moore Campbell, The Summer We Got Saved by Pat Cunningham Devoto, and Four Spirits by Sena Jeter Naslund. In these novels, I look at the relationships between black female characters and white female characters. I analyze the ways in which their relationships are formed, the historic background that provides the setting for their relationships, and the author’s personal relationship with the text. Looking at cross-racial relationships among women in these novels shows that the authors attempt to reconcile relationships in …

Molecular Analysis Of Endophytic Bacteria Associated With Lettuce., Shelly Leigh Osborn Jan 2011

Molecular Analysis Of Endophytic Bacteria Associated With Lettuce., Shelly Leigh Osborn

Honors Theses

Bacteria associated with lettuce and spinach have been linked to outbreaks of infectious diseases in humans. While studies have examined the culturable bacteria residing on lettuce surfaces, few have evaluated the non-culturable bacteria within the plant. This study used molecular techniques to examine the bacterial community present in five different salad greens (green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce, and baby spinach). Both conventionally and organically grown samples of each salad type were examined, and samples were processed as purchased and following surface sterilization. DNA was extracted from homogenized samples and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used …

Exploring Identity Management At Community Colleges In Texas With Open Access To College Computer Networks, Michael John Callahan Jan 2011

Exploring Identity Management At Community Colleges In Texas With Open Access To College Computer Networks, Michael John Callahan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The study addressed the lack of identity management practices in Texas community colleges to identify guest users who access college computers. Guest user access is required by Texas law and is part of the state's mission to bridge the technology gap; however, improper identification methods leave the college vulnerable to liability issues. The purpose of this study was to eliminate or mitigate liabilities facing colleges by creating and using security policies to identify guest users. This study combined the theoretical concepts of Cameron's internal security management model with the external trust models of the Liberty Alliance and Microsoft's Passport software. …
