Description Of Spermatheca And Eggs Of Eurygaster Austriaca (Schrank, 1778) (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae),Based On Optical And Scanning Electron Microscopy, Selami̇ Candan, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Mustafa Güllü

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Spermatheca and egg morphology of Eurygaster austriaca (Schrank, 1778) were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The spermatheca of E. austriaca is characterized by a spermathecal bulb, a pumping region, distal and proximal flanges and ducts, and a genital chamber. Each female was shown to deposit 14 green eggs on average in mass. The spherical eggs averaged 1.05 ± 0.05 mm in diameter. The first external evidence of embryonic development was the appearance of 2 red eye spots opposite each other beneath operculum followed by the appearance of a blackish T-shaped egg-burster between the eye spots. The thickened …

Institutionalization, Investment Adviser Regulation, And The Hedge Fund Problem, Anita K. Krug Jan 2011

Institutionalization, Investment Adviser Regulation, And The Hedge Fund Problem, Anita K. Krug

Articles

This Article contends that more effective regulation of investment advisers could be achieved by recognizing that the growth of hedge funds, private equity funds, and other private funds in recent decades is a manifestation of institutionalization in the investment advisory context. That is, investment advisers today commonly advise these “institutions,” which have supplanted other, smaller investors as advisory clients.

However, the federal securities statute governing investment advisers, the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, does not address the role of private funds as institutions that now intermediate those smaller investors' relationships to investment advisers. Consistent with that failure, investment adviser regulation …

Memory And Punishment, O. Carter Snead Jan 2011

Memory And Punishment, O. Carter Snead

Journal Articles

This article is the first scholarly exploration of the implications of neurobiological memory modification for criminal law. Its point of entry is the fertile context of criminal punishment, in which memory plays a crucial role. Specifically, this article will argue that there is a deep relationship between memory and the foundational principles justifying how punishment should be distributed, including retributive justice, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, moral education, and restorative justice. For all such theoretical justifications, the questions of who and how much to punish are inextricably intertwined with how a crime is remembered - by the offender, by the sentencing authority, …

Administrative Change, Randy J. Kozel, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski Jan 2011

Administrative Change, Randy J. Kozel, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski

Journal Articles

Determining the standard of review for administrative actions has commanded judicial and scholarly interest like few other topics. Notwithstanding the extensive debates, far less consideration has been given to the unique features of agencies’ deviations from their own precedents. In this article we examine this puzzle of administrative change. By change, we mean a reversal of the agency’s former views about the best way to implement and interpret its regulatory mandate. We trace the lineage of administrative change at the Supreme Court and analyze features that distinguish agency reversals from other administrative actions. In particular, we contend that because administrative …

Probabilistic Knowledge Of Third-Party Trademark Infringement, Mark P. Mckenna Jan 2011

Probabilistic Knowledge Of Third-Party Trademark Infringement, Mark P. Mckenna

Journal Articles

This essay views secondary trademark liability in light of tort law’s treatment of parties whose actions expose a plaintiff to third party-wrongdoing. Broadly speaking, tort law imposes liability on a party for contributing to the tortious activity of another in two different ways. In vicarious and accomplice liability cases, courts impose the same liability on the defendant as they would have on the direct tortfeasors, had they been defendants: if the third-party wrongdoer is a batterer, the defendant is liable for battery. Another line of cases imposes liability for unreasonably putting a defendant at risk of third-party wrongdoing, and these …

Charting A Course In Clearing, Colleen M. Baker Jan 2011

Charting A Course In Clearing, Colleen M. Baker

Journal Articles

Memorable tales of financial collapse, such as that of Lehman Brothers (Lehman), Bear Stearns, and American Financial Group (AIG), frequently drive narratives of financial market crises and future preventative regulatory solutions. Much U.S. financial regulation, such as the monumental and historic “Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act,” (Dodd-Frank) can be understood from this perspective. Aspects of such responses, however, are sometimes puzzling. An example is the reforms surrounding certain financial market utilities in Dodd-Frank’s Title VIII, “Payment, Clearing, and Settlement Supervision Act of 2010” (Title VIII). Financial market utilities often play a vital role in a process known …

Introduction To Confronting The Climate Crisis: Catholic Theological Perspectives, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Confronting the Climate Crisis: Catholic Theological Perspectives is the culmination of a three-year study by participants in the Catholic Theology and Global Warming Interest Group of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA). This interest group was established in 2008 when several members of the CTSA shared a desire to respond theologically to the complex and vexing problem of global climate change. Some had already been addressing environmental issues from the perspectives of the various sub-disciplines of theology in which we have been trained (e.g., biblical, historical, systematics, ethics) because inherent in our vocation as theologians is a calling by …

The Alien Tort Statute And The Law Of Nations, Bradford R. Clark, Anthony J. Bellia Jr. Jan 2011

The Alien Tort Statute And The Law Of Nations, Bradford R. Clark, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.

Journal Articles

Courts and scholars have struggled to identify the original meaning of the Alien Tort Statute (ATS). As enacted in 1789, the ATS provided "[t]hat the district courts...shall...have cognizance...of all causes where an alien sues for tort only in violation of the law of nations or a treaty of the United States." The statute was rarely invoked for almost two centuries. In the 1980s, lower federal courts began reading the statute expansively to allow foreign citizens to sue other foreign citizens for all violations of modern customary international law that occurred outside the United States. In 2004, the Supreme Court took …

Microsurgical Reconstruction Of Large, Locally Advanced Cutaneous Malignancy Of The Head And Neck, Joseph L. Hill, Brian Rinker Jan 2011

Microsurgical Reconstruction Of Large, Locally Advanced Cutaneous Malignancy Of The Head And Neck, Joseph L. Hill, Brian Rinker

Surgery Faculty Publications

Large, locally advanced cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck region is rare. However, when present, they impart a significant reconstructive challenge. These cancers have a tendency to invade peripheral tissues covering a large surface area as well as expose deeper structures such as skull, dura, orbit, and sinus after resection. Complicating the reconstructive dilemma is the high incidence of individuals who have undergone previous surgery in the region as well as adjuvant radiation therapy, which may preclude the use of local flaps or skin graft. Free tissue transfer provides a reconstructive surgeon the ability to provide well-vascularized tissue with …

Hired Guns And Moral Torpedoes: Balancing The Competing Moral Duties Of The Public Relations Professional, Kati Tusinski Berg, Kevin Gibson

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Public relations helps an organisation and its publics adapt mutually to each other. However, this does not mean that the profession is value neutral or anything goes. There will be cases where professionals have to make discretionary ethical decisions and negotiate their roles and responsibilities, especially when faced with novel or difficult issues. In this conceptual paper, we describe how the notion of professional role morality not only shapes the individual struggles that practitioners endure but also highlights the organisational structures that foster or shun ethics in the decision-making process. Thus we provide a means of assessing professional action that …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Antioxidant Delivery Systems, Paritosh P. Wattamwar Jan 2011

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Antioxidant Delivery Systems, Paritosh P. Wattamwar

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Even though the role of oxidative stress in a variety of disease states is known, strategies to alleviate this oxidative stress by antioxidants have not been able to achieve clinical success. Particularly, treatment of oxidative stress by small molecule antioxidants has not received due attention because of the challenges associated with its delivery. Antioxidant polymers, where small molecule antioxidants are incorporated into the polymer backbone, are an emerging class of materials that can address some of these challenges.

In this work, biodegradable polymers incorporating phenolic antioxidants in the polymer backbone were synthesized. Antioxidant polymers were then characterized for their in …

Stability Of Affinity Based Layer-By-Layer Polymeric Self-Assemblies For Oral Wound Applications, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam Jan 2011

Stability Of Affinity Based Layer-By-Layer Polymeric Self-Assemblies For Oral Wound Applications, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Oral mucositis is a painful and debilitating chronic inflammatory condition that can result from chemo and/or radiotherapy. While current treatment strategies which provide temporary relief exist, there is still an unmet clinical need for a robust long active barrier strategy which can simultaneously provide protection and release drug to enhance the wound healing response. It is proposed that an affinity based layer-by-layer self-assembled barrier administered as a series of mouth rinses can allow for wound specific drug delivery, providing an effective regenerative therapy.

In this work, biotinylated poly(acrylic acid) is used to develop LBL assemblies based upon biotin-streptavidin affinity interactions. …

Dynamic Relaxation Properties Of Aromatic Polyimides And Polymer Nanocomposites, Anthony C. Comer Jan 2011

Dynamic Relaxation Properties Of Aromatic Polyimides And Polymer Nanocomposites, Anthony C. Comer

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

The dynamic relaxation characteristics of Matrimid® (BTDA-DAPI) polyimide and several functionalized aromatic polyimides have been investigated using dynamic mechanical and dielectric methods. The functionalized polyimides were thermally rearranged to generate polybenzoxazole membranes with controlled free volume characteristics. All polyimides have application in membrane separations and exhibit three motional processes with increasing temperature: two sub-glass relaxations (ƴ and β transitions), and the glass-rubber (α) transition. For Matrimid, the low-temperature ƴ transition is purely non-cooperative, while the β sub-glass transition shows a more cooperative character as assessed via the Starkweather method. For the thermally rearranged polyimides, the ƴ transition is a …

Cell And Protein-Based Sensing Systems For The Detection Of Environmentally And Physiologically Relevant Molecules, Kendrick Bruce Turner Jan 2011

Cell And Protein-Based Sensing Systems For The Detection Of Environmentally And Physiologically Relevant Molecules, Kendrick Bruce Turner

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

The detection of small molecules in complex sample matrices such as environmental (surface and ground water, sediment, etc.) and biological (blood, serum, plasma, etc.) samples is of paramount importance for monitoring the distribution of environmental pollutants and their patterns of exposure within the population as well as diagnosing and managing diseases. Biosensors have demonstrated a singular ability to sensitively and selectively detect analytes in complex samples without the need for extensive sample preparation and pretreatment. Nature has demonstrated myriad examples of exquisite selectivity in spite of complexity and we seek to take advantage of that attribute in the development of …

Opioid Codrugs For Pain Management, Ujjwal Chakraborty Jan 2011

Opioid Codrugs For Pain Management, Ujjwal Chakraborty

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissus damage or described in terms of such damage. Opioids are effective in treating moderate to severe pain, but opioid alone therapy is associated with several adverse effects, development of tolerance and addiction potential. One way to solve these problems is to administer opioids with adjuvant drugs. In this project several opioid molecules were combined with other adjuvant drugs in a single chemical entity to form a codrug.

A series of codrugs were prepared by conjugation of an opioid with S-(-)-nornicotine, ketamine, norketamine and gabapentin. Several …

Does Quantitative Or Qualitative Data Lower Stigma Of Those Suffering From Schizophrenia?, Fred A. Washburn Jan 2011

Does Quantitative Or Qualitative Data Lower Stigma Of Those Suffering From Schizophrenia?, Fred A. Washburn

Masters Theses

This study examines social tolerance and support for legal coercion for people suffering from schizophrenia. Mental illness, defined as a biomedical illness, has decreased stigma and support for legal coercion for other mental illnesses but has the inverse relationship with schizophrenia (Phelan, Yang, Cruz-Rojas, 2006; Schnittker, 2008). This increase in stigma may be linked to scientific quantitative data that places the illness in control of the person. The study examines Eastern Illinois University students' (N=130) level of social tolerance and support for legal coercion for people suffering from schizophrenia after they have been exposed to qualitative data, quantitative data, or …
