A Brief Review Of Morphological Variation In Natrix Tessellata In Israel: Between Sides, Among Individuals, Between Sexes, And Among Regions, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Tal Shapira

Turkish Journal of Zoology

After introducing the distribution and biology of Natrix tessellata in Israel, on the southern edge of its range, we address its intraspecific variation from the literature and examination of 262 museum specimens. Head pholidosis showed no significant directional asymmetry, but asymmetry in infralabial plates was significantly correlated with frequency of injured tails. Variation in body size showed no clear seasonal growth, presumably due to climatic fluctuations. The variation in number of ventrals (in males, 159-173, mode 165) was not geographical. Females attained 750-800 mm (head and body; mode 600-650) and males 700-750 (mode 500-600) mm. Females had significantly greater relative …

Groundwater mining is inadequately addressed by state and federal policies in the United States. New Mexico's failure to manage groundwater aquifers has resulted in costly federal rescue projects. Better information and involvement of communities in groundwater policy would provide for more sustainable use of this resource.

Too Hot To Handle: Climate Change And Agricultural Water Use, Denise D. Fort Jan 2011

Too Hot To Handle: Climate Change And Agricultural Water Use, Denise D. Fort

Faculty Scholarship

The world faces enormous challenges in responding to looming crises in food and water. Responding to this challenge will require flexibility; such flexibility may be impeded by legal institutions. This paper looks at the western United States and discusses the role of irrigated agriculture in that region. Because of climate change, a growing population, declining groundwater, the need to protect ecosystems and other conflicts, the author suggests that all water uses, including long-standing agricultural water rights, need to be examined in light of these changes. Legal systems have tended to serve the status quo, but perhaps the law can help …

The Fundamental Question When Applying The Welfare Principle: "Who Will Be The Better Parent Or Guardian"?, Siyuan Chen Jan 2011

The Fundamental Question When Applying The Welfare Principle: "Who Will Be The Better Parent Or Guardian"?, Siyuan Chen

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The welfare principle – that is, when making a custody-related decision, the best interests of the child form the first and paramount consideration – is probably one of the cardinal principles of family law in many common law jurisdictions. While the welfare principle is generally considered a wide concept with no exhaustive definition or list of factors, it is submitted that there is an important question – sometimes neglected or misunderstood – that should actually feature most prominently when applying the welfare principle, particularly when joint or no order custody orders seem impossible. The question is simply that of “who …

The Unimportance Of Being "Electronic" Or Popular Misconceptions About “Internet Contracting”, Eliza Mik Jan 2011

The Unimportance Of Being "Electronic" Or Popular Misconceptions About “Internet Contracting”, Eliza Mik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Existing e-commerce literature abounds with misconceptions regarding both technology and contract law. Long-standing legal concepts are adorned with “e-” or “cyber-” to appear more exciting. The traditional contractual regime issupplanted with new principles instead of being supplemented with technological considerations. It is one thing, to include technology in legal analyses, it is another to create separate, technology-specific categories. Separate categories justify the departure from traditional principles. Most, if not all, alleged “challenges” created by new communication scenarios fit within the existing legal framework, technological complexity and novelty of the Internet notwithstanding. Most “challenges” are also unrelated to the fact that …

Systematic Negligence In Jury Operations: Why The Definition Of Systematic Exclusion In Fair Cross Section Claims Must Be Expanded, Paula Hannaford-Agor Jan 2011

Systematic Negligence In Jury Operations: Why The Definition Of Systematic Exclusion In Fair Cross Section Claims Must Be Expanded, Paula Hannaford-Agor

Faculty Publications

This Article argues that in the context of fair cross section jurisprudence, courts' ability to control, or at least greatly mitigate, the extent of minority underrepresentation due to nonsystematic factors is greatly underestimated. Over the past forty years, courts have implemented a number of effective practices to ensure an inclusive and representative master jury list and to minimize undeliverable, nonresponse and failure-to-appear, and excusal rates. All of these techniques demonstrably improve the demographic representation of the jury pool. The vast majority of courts employ these techniques on a routine basis. By perpetuating the misconception that courts have no responsibility to …

Embracing Caregiving And Respecting Choice: An Essay On The Debate Over Changing Gender Norms, Nicole Buonocore Porter Jan 2011

Embracing Caregiving And Respecting Choice: An Essay On The Debate Over Changing Gender Norms, Nicole Buonocore Porter

Faculty Publications

This Essay is the third piece of my project to resolve what I call the "caregiver conundrum" for working caregivers. I define the "caregiver conundrum" broadly, to include all of the workplace norms, rules and practices that make it difficult for working caregivers to successfully balance work and family.

In conceptualizing my ideas, I realized that one of the critiques of my proposal would be that it does nothing to change the gender norms, or stated another way, it accepts the gendered division of work and family with which most people live. I do nothing to get women to do …

Negotiating Federalism, Erin Ryan Jan 2011

Negotiating Federalism, Erin Ryan

Faculty Publications

Bridging the fields of federalism and negotiation theory, Negotiating Federalism analyzes how public actors navigate difficult federalism terrain by negotiating directly with counterparts across state-federal lines. In contrast to the stylized, zero-sum model of federalism that pervades political discourse and judicial doctrine, the Article demonstrates that the boundary between state and federal power is negotiated on scales large and small, and on an ongoing basis. It is also the first to recognize the procedural tools that bilateral federalism bargaining offers to supplement unilateral federalism interpretation in contexts of jurisdictional overlap.

The Article begins by situating its inquiry within the age-old …

The Effects Of Coursecasting In International Freshman Students' Perceptions Of Marginality And Isolation, Anxiety, And English Language Oral Proficiency And Comprehension, Alberto Fernandez

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The influx of international students attending American universities has put the U.S. at the forefront of international education, generating over $14.5 billion yearly.

International students often face adjustment issues impacting their level of satisfaction with their experience. These involve oral language proficiency, as well as feelings of anxiety and isolation resulting from language deficiencies, which increase their feelings of marginality. Engaged learning, which is dependent on comprehension, is affected by the anxiety students bring to class. It is believed that coursecasts may alleviate anxiety, thus improving student engagement in learning.

A pre-experimental research design investigates whether coursecasting mitigates feelings of …

Design Of Cdba-Based Active Polyphase Filter For Low-If Receiver Applications, Mehmet Sağbaş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A novel first-order active-RC polyphase filter section, using current differencing buffered amplifiers (CDBAs), is presented. The section uses 6 resistors, 2 capacitors, and 2 CDBAs. The transfer function of the proposed section has a single pole and optionally a single zero. Increasing the number of cascading sections, any higher order polyphase filter can be realized. This paper also introduces the leakage caused by element deviation and the effects of the amplifier in nonideal cases. Furthermore, nonideal performances of the proposed filter section are tested with PSpice simulations.

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper addresses the L_2 gain control problem for disturbance attenuation in Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) Systems having saturating actuators when the system is subjected to L_2 disturbances. In the presented method, saturating actuator is expressed analytically with a convex hull of some linear feedback which let us construct L_2 control problem via Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) which are obtained by some ellipsoids. It is shown that the stability and disturbance rejection capabilities of the control system are all measured by means of these nested ellipsoids where the inner ellipsoid covers the initial conditions for states whereas the outer ellipsoid …

Design And Implementation Of A Voice-Controlled Prosthetic Hand, Musa Hakan Asyali, Mustafa Yilmaz, Mahmut Tokmakçi, Kanber Sedef, Beki̇r Hakan Aksebzeci̇, Rohin Mittal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Current hand prostheses are mostly driven by electromyography (EMG) signal, and existing experiments have proved that multichannel EMG signal controls are not suitable due to early fatigue problems and high effort requirements to perform even simple activities. Therefore, in this study we present a new voice-controlled active hand prosthesis to perform several basic tasks. We first designed a novel multifingered prosthetic hand with the ability of picking up and releasing objects. The prosthetic hand employs 3 DC motors and gears to transfer motion to the linked iparts of the fingers. We used flexible thin-film resistive force sensors at the fingertips …

Papr Reduction Using Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm In Ofdm Systems, Necmi̇ Taşpinar, Dervi̇ş Karaboğa, Mahmut Yildirim, Bahri̇ye Akay

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is an attractive scheme for peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, but its high computational complexity to find optimum phase factors is the main drawback. In this paper, we propose PTS based on an artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm (ABC-PTS) for reducing the computational complexity of the PTS in the OFDM system. The ABC-PTS was compared to conventional PTS using a random search strategy (RS-PTS) and optimum PTS. In addition, the bit error rate (BER) performance of the ABC-PTS was shown when a high power amplifier (HPA) was used for …
