Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler Jan 2011

Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler

Faculty Publications

Mechanical properties of polymer electrolyte membrane have important implications in the endurance of many electrochemical energy conversion devices [1]. Mechanical experiments are effective method to reveal discrete damage developed in the membrane by quantifying the change of mechanical strength and toughness. Regular strain measurement methods are overly intrusive to the thin and relatively fragile polymer electrolyte membrane; hence optical-based minimal invasive stress/strain measurement methods are studied.

Functional Characterization Of Wd Repeat Proteins, Atcstf50 And Atfy In Cleavage And Polyadenylation, Lavanya Dampanaboina

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Polyadenylation is an essential post-transcriptional modification resulting in a mature mRNA in eukaryotes. Three cis-elements the Far Upstream Element (FUE), Near Upstream Element (NUE), and Cleavage Site (CS) - guide the process of cleavage and polyadenylation with the help of multi-subunit protein complexes cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor (CPSF), cleavage stimulation factor (CstF) along with cleavage factors and poly(A) polymerase. Protein-protein interactions play an important role in the cleavage and polyadenylation process. WD repeat proteins play an important role in protein-protein interactions and have diverse functions in plant system. In the present study WD repeat proteins AtCstF50 and AtFY were …

The Identity Of Late Barbarians: Goths And Wine, Walter Stevenson Jan 2011

The Identity Of Late Barbarians: Goths And Wine, Walter Stevenson

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

Wine, symbol of civilization in the Mediterranean for millennia and still a profound cultural marker in Europe today, is not often associated with the Goths.1 But there is evidence allowing us to add this Northern European barbarian people to the tapestry of ancient wine production2 at the same time that they were beginning to cultivate the first European barbarian literature with the translation of the Bible into the Gothic language.

Hiatus Avoidance And Metrification In The Rigveda, Dieter C. Gunkel, Kevin Ryan Jan 2011

Hiatus Avoidance And Metrification In The Rigveda, Dieter C. Gunkel, Kevin Ryan

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

Using new corpus resources for Rigvedic poetics, we address various aspects of the poets' treatment of vowel hiatus and pre-vocalic shortening (correption), including their strategies for avoidance of these phenomena in certain contexts. Using observed vs. expected tests, we demonstrate, for one, that hiatus avoidance is correlated with degree of metrical-prosodic juncture. For example, hiatus is actively avoided both at the caesura in trimeter verse and between padãs, but its avoidance is weaker in the latter case. In conducting these tests, we control for a confound (interference) from pre-vocalic shortening, which requires us to address the problem of whether it …

Guerrilla marketing is a means of advertising that relies more on unconventional methods and less on big budgets. The goal is typically to do something that gets the targeted market or demographic talking so that word of mouth does most of the advertising legwork. Guerilla marketing was the technique employed to promote the 2010 Information Faire and Festival, or IF2, a new event sponsored by the Libraries of the College of the Holy Cross which invited students to learn in fun and engaging ways about the many library services and resources available. The Information Faire and Festival was …

Objective. Depression has been associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk, and a depression-related elevation of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) has been proposed as a possible mechanism. The objective of this paper is to examine association between depression and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Methods. Subjects consisted of 508 healthy adults (mean age 48.5 years; 49% women, 88% white) residing in central Massachusetts. Data were collected at baseline and at quarterly intervals over a one-year period per individual. Multivariable linear mixed models were used to assess the association for the entire sample and by gender. Results. The …

Self-Rated Health Status And Cardiorespiratory Fitness As Predictors Of Mortality In Men, Jennifer Gander, Duck-Chul Lee, Xuemei Sui, James R. Hébert, Steven P. Hooker, Steven N. Blair Jan 2011

Self-Rated Health Status And Cardiorespiratory Fitness As Predictors Of Mortality In Men, Jennifer Gander, Duck-Chul Lee, Xuemei Sui, James R. Hébert, Steven P. Hooker, Steven N. Blair

Faculty Publications

Self-rated health (SRH) and cardiorespiratory fitness (fitness) are independent risk factors for all-cause mortality. The purpose of this report is to examine the single and joint effects of these exposures on mortality risk. The study included 18 488 men who completed a health survey, clinical examination and a maximal exercise treadmill test during 1987–2003. Cox regression analysis was used to quantify the associations of SRH and fitness with all-cause mortality. There were 262 deaths during 17 years of follow-up. There was a significant inverse trend (ptrend <0.05) for mortality across SRH categories after adjustment for age, examination year, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, abnormal ECG, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Adjustment for fitness attenuated the association (p value =0.09). The authors also observed an inverse association between fitness and mortality after controlling for the same covariates and SRH (ptrend = 0.006). The combined analysis of SRH and fitness showed that fit …

Plasticidad Sináptica En La Enfermedad De Alzheimer: Hacia Una Detección Temprana Utilizando Protocolos No-Invasivos, Daniel A.C. Montoya Jan 2011

Plasticidad Sináptica En La Enfermedad De Alzheimer: Hacia Una Detección Temprana Utilizando Protocolos No-Invasivos, Daniel A.C. Montoya

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

It has been proposed that Alzheimer's disease is a synaptic failure associated with subtle memory loss during the early stages of the disorder. If this is the case, it should prove useful to elucidate the mechanisms of synaptic plasticity during early stages of the condition. On the other hand, Long Term Potentiation, one of the best-known mechanisms of synaptic plasticity has been recently confirmed absent in Alzheimer's disease patients. This link may lead to focus efforts in early detection of synaptic failure and development of preventive approaches aiming to improve synaptic plasticity. Here we review some new evidence in the …

A New Approach To Nineteenth-Century Religious Exemption Cases, Jud Campbell Jan 2011

A New Approach To Nineteenth-Century Religious Exemption Cases, Jud Campbell

Law Faculty Publications

Scholars frequently cite early nineteenth-century cases to ascertain the original meaning of the Free Exercise Clause. Previous studies, however, have ignored crucial trends in those decisions, thus leading to mistaken emphasis on the denial of religious accommodation claims. This Note argues that prevailing theological views, skepticism of courtroom declarations of religious belief, and contemporary notions of judicial deference better explain nineteenth-century cases than does a wholesale rejection of judicially enforceable religious exemptions. This novel approach clarifies previously unexplained tensions in early free exercise opinions. It also suggests that the Supreme Court’s holding in Employment Division v. Smith is inconsistent with …

Single-Particle Model For A Lithium-Ion Cell: Thermal Behavior, Meng Guo, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White Jan 2011

Single-Particle Model For A Lithium-Ion Cell: Thermal Behavior, Meng Guo, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

The single-particle model presented by Santhanagopalan et al. [ J. Power Sources , 156 , 620 (2006)] is extended to include an energy balance. The temperature dependence of the solid phase diffusion coefficient of the lithium in the intercalation particles, the electrochemical reaction rate constants, and the open circuit potentials (OCPs) of the positive and negative electrodes are included in the model. The solution phase polarization is approximated using a nonlinear resistance, which is a function of current and temperature. The model is used to predict the temperature and voltage profiles in a lithium-ion cell during galvanostatic operations. The single-particle …

Density Functional Theory Study On The Electronic Structure Of N- And P-Type Doped Srtio3 At Anodic Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Conditions, S. Suthirakun, Salai Cheettu Ammal, G. Xiao, Fanglin Chen, Hans-Conrad Zur Loye, Andreas Heyden Jan 2011

Density Functional Theory Study On The Electronic Structure Of N- And P-Type Doped Srtio3 At Anodic Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Conditions, S. Suthirakun, Salai Cheettu Ammal, G. Xiao, Fanglin Chen, Hans-Conrad Zur Loye, Andreas Heyden

Faculty Publications

The electronic conductivity and thermodynamic stability of mixed n-type and p-type doped SrTiO3 have been investigated at anodic solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) conditions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In particular, constrained ab initio thermodynamic calculations have been performed to evaluate the phase stability and reducibility of various Nb- and Ga-doped SrTiO3 at synthesized and anodic SOFC conditions. The density of states (DOS) of these materials was analyzed to study the effects of n- and p-doping on the electronic conductivity. In agreement with experimental observations, we find that the transformation from 20% Nb-doped Sr-deficient SrTiO3 to a non-Sr-deficient phase …

The Adventures Of 'Superman': A Narrative Worth Mediating, Jeffrey Zeman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Summer, 2013. The world will believe, again, a man can fly. Most likely, anyway. Maybe. Fingers crossed.

The rights to Superman and his stories are the subject of a long-developing and heated dispute between publisher DC Comics ("DC") and the estate of Jerry Siegel, co-creator of the iconic character. While a much-talked-about reboot of the movie franchise enters preproduction, the latest round of lawsuits involves DC suing the Siegel family's attorney. The publisher claims attorney Marc Toberoff has wrongfully interfered with "contractual rights and other interests" by advising the families of Siegel and his cocreator, Joe Schuster, to reclaim the …

After The Ecj's West Tankers: The Clash Of Civilizations On The Issue Of An Anti-Suit Injunction, Grace Gunah Kim

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note argues that the ECJ's West Tankers decision to ban an anti-suit injunction in Europe, coupled with the recent European Commission's reform proposals to govern arbitration within the jurisdictional framework of the Brussels Regulation No. 44/ 2001 ("Brussels Regulation"), directly clash with the United Nations Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards ("New York Convention") and practically amount to a blanket rule that bars English courts from upholding arbitration agreements.

Equitable Estoppel To Compel Arbitration In New York: A Doctrine To Prevent Inequity, Matthew Berg Jan 2011

Equitable Estoppel To Compel Arbitration In New York: A Doctrine To Prevent Inequity, Matthew Berg

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Arbitration, as a favored alternative to court systems, finds its validity in both state and federal law. The Federal Arbitration Act ("FAA") was enacted in 1925 unopposed, reflecting a strong favored alternative by the federal government to the Article III courts. This presumption was established in Section 2 of the FAA, which provides that contracts that include an arbitration clause "shall be valid, irrevocable, and enforceable" unless a court finds "grounds as exist at law or in equity for the revocation of any contract [or clause]."
