Ghost Dancing And The Iron Horse: Surving Through Tradition And Technology, Alex K. Ruuska

This article explores how railroad technologies, so critical in constructing the imagined nation of the nineteenth-century United States, were simultaneously shaped by multiple social groups including the native communities of North America. This analysis demonstrates how Native Americans’ resistance to and use of railroad technologies contributed to the revitalization and construction of ritual practices and pan-Indian identities associated with the 1890s Ghost Dance. Using case studies of the Northern Paiutes of western Nevada and the Sioux nations of South Dakota, Native Americans’ utilization of railroad technologies are examined during two periods of encroachment, revealing shifting attitudes and practices towards Euroamerican …

This project deals with the one and only character of Satan, revealing him through the eyes of the medieval world. The ever-evolving, interconnectedness of culture, religion, and superstition make for a truly unique theatrical experience in the middle ages. With limited understanding and access to scripture, medieval Christians generated a blended belief system, in order to make sense of the metaphysical world, which manifests itself in medieval drama‟s representations of Satan. Are Small And Medium States Superior To Large? The Role A State’S Size Plays In Regional Integration, Jerome Marston

This study examines the relationship between a state’s size and regional integration. Specifically, this study empirically focuses on whether a particular size of state plays a disproportionate role in establishing regional institutions. This paper undertakes research in an attempt to settle a dispute that has arisen within the literature. Expressly, whether it is small, medium, or large states that encourage regional integration and furthermore whether the former two in fact resist the latter’s attempts to do so. In this solid text Michael Oberg presents his version of American Indian history. From the start he works to avoid presenting just another encyclopedic narrative likely to leave readers "awash in a sea of facts and data disconnected from any coherent narrative." Infrastructure systems are vital to the functioning of our society and economy. However, these systems are increasingly complex and are more interdependent than ever, making them difficult to manage. The Penumbra Of Weimar Political Culture: Pacifism, Feminism, And Social Democracy, Shelley Rose

This article offers a new reading of Germany’s complex political culture, exploring the contributions of pacifists, international feminists, and Social Democrats as proactive, yet marginalized, participants in Weimar-era politics. Through a series of historical events including the No-More-War protests, international education courses, pacifist reading sessions, and a transnational peace exhibit, the author demonstrates dynamic exchanges between party and informal politics on the political Left. This interaction, as well as expanding transnational networks and awareness, opened new political spaces for peace activism in the Weimar Republic, the effects of which still endure today.

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The turbulent time of the 1930s encompassed, in literature, both the rise of the proletarian novel and the increased development of American modernism. Both played out against a backdrop of extreme cultural dislocation. As long standing assumptions about social and cultural positions dissolved in the wake of breadlines, unemployment, and political reform, the country found itself confronting the breakdown of barriers of class, race and gender. This essay joins a growing body of scholarship that seeks to understand how the Great Depression influenced, and was influenced by the literature it produced. This article presents three reasons for states to use cyber warfare and
shows that cyberspace is—and will continue to be—a decisive element in
China's strategy to ascend in the international system. The three reasons
are: deterrence through infiltration of critical infrastructure; militarytechnological
espionage to gain military knowledge; and industrial espionage
to gain economic advantage. China has a greater interest in using
cyberspace offensively than other actors, such as the United States, since
it has more to gain from spying on and deterring the United States than

Paul’s understanding of the condition of nonbelievers and his understanding of how Satan attacks believers is explained in this article. In support of this effort the biblical data is examined and lessons arising from the Pauline corpus in relation to these two issues are noted. Paul’s perspective on these two issues is explored as it relates to his missiological practice. The article, then, concludes with some contemporary applications of this study as they affect current missiological practices.

This article’s purpose is to explore the issue of evangelistic renewal within evangelicalism. Discussions concerning the decline of evangelism are ubiquitous, and many evangelicals have called for greater attention to discipleship and follow up as the prescription to this acknowledged malady. This essay argues that the more critical need is to intentionally factor the concept of worldview into the development of contemporary evangelistic strategies and methods to more effectively reach postmodern persons. Revisiting The Estonian Cyber Attacks: Digital Threats And Multinational Responses, Stephen Herzog

In April 2007, the Estonian Government moved a memorial commemorating
the Soviet liberation of the country from the Nazis to a less prominent
and visible location in Tallinn. This decision triggered rioting among
Russian-speaking minorities and cyber terrorism targeting Estonia's critical
economic and political infrastructure. Drawing upon the Estonian
cyber attacks, this article argues that globalization and the Internet have
enabled transnational groups—such as the Russian diaspora—to avenge
their grievances by threatening the sovereignty of nation-states in cyberspace.
Sophisticated and virtually untraceable political "hacktivists" may
now possess the ability to disrupt or destroy government operations,

The intent of this article is to describe—and prescribe—a scientific framework
for assuring mission essential functions in a contested cyber environment.
Such a framework has profound national security implications
as the American military increasingly depends on cyberspace to execute
critical mission sets. In setting forth this prescribed course of action, the
article will first decompose information systems into atomic processes
that manipulate information at all six phases of the information lifecycle,
then systematically define the mathematical rules that govern mission
assurance.

A Call For Mediated Solutions To Arctic Region Disputes, Bradley L. Roth

The note argues that the Arctic region has become a focal point of international competition due to climate change, with disputes over territorial, resource, and navigational rights among the Arctic Five (Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia, and the United States). It advocates for a worldcentric mediation approach, emphasizing global sustainability and fairness, to resolve these disputes effectively while addressing the region's ecological sensitivity and the long-term sustainability of the planet.

Tailored to a unit’s size, scope, and mission, logistics or the practical art of transporting and supplying military forces via air, land, and sea is at the heart of any military operation. During the late nineteenth century the United States became increasingly involved in low intensity conflicts throughout Latin America and the Philippines. The nature of small wars required not only military provisions, but also supplies to help stabilize countries. The 1915 intervention in Haiti by the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy is a prime case study for the flexible bifurcation of logistical efforts to support military and civic operations. …

This paper examines John F. Kennedy's rhetoric concerning the Berlin Crisis (1961-1963). Three major speeches are analyzed: Kennedy's Radio and Television Report to the American People on the Berlin Crisis, the Address at Rudolph Wilde Platz and the Address at the Free University. The study interrogates the rhetorical strategies implemented by Kennedy in confronting Khrushchev over the explosive situation in Berlin. The paper attempts to answer the following research questions: What is the historical context that helped frame the rhetorical situation Kennedy faced?
