This thesis argues that top-down political processes enabled Katrina�s destruction, including the sustained displacement and systematic disenfranchisement of Black working-class residents during the rebuilding process. �This paper looks at post-Katrina urbicidal trends (and residential resistance to them) through a method of open-ended, grounded-theory interviews with founders, directors and workers in the grassroots, community-based organization network of New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward. �The project integrates secondary literature and with participation and observation to create a narrative of urbicide and urbicide resistance in post-Katrina New Orleans. �It contends that the two most salient features of this story are a local history of …

Mandala Music is a series of eight graphically-notated scores. Seven scores are thematically grounded in elements of traditional music notation; the last is intended to be purely abstract. The scores� circular forms reflect both compositional and performative processes that draw on the sacred and secular art form of the mandala. In Buddhist and Hindu traditions, mandalas were used as visual guides for meditation rituals. Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung brought the mandala into Western consciousness through his research with mandala-drawing as a tool for expressing, exploring, and potentially healing the human psyche.Performers from any background are invited to explore the …

This thesis analyzes the strategies and tactics of the armies involved in the American Civil War, with a particular focus on Confederate infantry tactics. The first two chapters focus on the first three years of the war, analyzing the goals of the Confederates, the origins of the offensive tactics they used on the battlefield to accomplish these goals and the results of those tactics. The second half of the thesis examines events in the last years of the war. James Chandler in England in 1819: the Politics Of Literary Culture and the Case of Romantic Historicism says that the second-generation Romantic writers were in essence historicist. According to Chandler, the literary work of England in 1819 is concerned with its own historical self-representation. Romantic writers can be regarded as fashioning the history by which they must be understood. Chandler regards Romanticism as a crucial period because despite the relatively short span of years to which it is usually assigned (1790-1830), close attention has been paid to its literary activity (3). In the year 1545, during the latter half of Japan‘s Sengoku Period or ―Age of Warring States‖, the minor samurai Ukida Naoie was assigned thirty men and a small fief in the province of Bizen. His task was to cultivate and defend this small corner of the province from the ambitious and power-hungry lords and bandits that abounded in the Sengoku Period, but Naoie set his sights higher. The Sepoy Rebellion of 1857 was a truly significant event in the annals of British history and imperial study as well. The recent historiography on the British perspective of the event neglects to consider the positive Anglo-Indian perspective, dismissing it as a dissident or non-existent sentiment. However, through analyzing the British Parliamentary debates, military memoir, and Victorian literature, a more dynamic picture emerges of mid-Victorian Britain. Britons from varying social classes felt sympathy and admiration for their Indian counterparts, even in lieu of the Sepoy Rebellion in 1857. Surprisingly, one hundred and fifty years later, students continue to find themselves asking many of the same questions about the great national tragedy faced during the Centennial in 1961. The most politically feasible and compelling argument for addressing climate change promptly is that U.S. security depends upon it. Threats to security emanating from climate change are many and varied, internal and external, and are already beginning to occur. This article explains the science behind climate change, then discusses the impacts that climate change will have on people and communities, and the relationship of those impacts to threats on U.S. security. This article provides a critical appraisal of the newly adopted African IDPs Convention. In particular, it offers a detailed analysis of the Convention's transformation of the UN Guiding Principles into legally binding rules for the management of the phenomenon of internal displacement in Africa. By definition, internally displaced persons (IDPs) are persons who have not crossed international frontiers and are citizens of the state within which they find themselves. As the first poem within Horace's original publication of Odes, Odes 1.1 embodies aspects of theme and style representative of the poet's approach to the genre of lyric poetry. The Odes of Horace allow various interpretations by the reader based on construction, vocabulary and imagery. The catastrophic dimensions of humanitarian emergencies are increasingly understood and more visible to states and international institutions. There is greater appreciation for the social, economic and political effects that follow in the short to long term from the devastating consequences of humanitarian emergencies. There is also recognition of the gendered dimensions of humanitarian emergencies in policy and institutional contexts. The post-Cold War dispensation in Togo, West Africa, ushered in a new lexicon of politically salient terms, among them droits de 1'homme. Initially deployed in the early 1990s by members of the political opposition to expose dictatorial abuse, this potent signifier then found its way into society at large and, spurred by NGO support, was taken up by women's groups in struggles over gender inequality. This essay explores droits de l'homme's itinerary in the villages of northern Togo where teenage children embraced the term in proclaiming their freedom from parental control. Disease progression of primary pneumonic plague is biphasic, consisting of a pre-inflammatory and a pro-inflammatory phase. Most lung pathogens induce a measureable inflammatory response within a few hours of infection, but Yersinia pestis is strikingly different: the first 36 hours of infection are characterized by rapid bacterial replication in the lung without generating appreciable levels of proinflammatory cytokines/chemokines, histological changes in infected tissue or outward disease symptoms. The ultimate goal of this thesis was to understand the processes that contribute to the pre-inflammatory phase of disease. Although indebted to scholars whose work has illuminated the distinctiveness of 1930s Britain, "National History and the Novel in 1930s Britain" argues that rather than seeking distinction, writers of the period were more concerned with the task of contextualizing their decade and their own position within a national historiography from which they felt the Great War and military masculinities had excluded them. Focusing on the novelists Christopher Isherwood, Evelyn Waugh, and Virginia Woolf, and the philosopher of history, R. G.
