The Moisture Performance Of Straw Bale Construction In A Temperate Maritime Climate, Jim Carfrae
The Moisture Performance Of Straw Bale Construction In A Temperate Maritime Climate, Jim Carfrae
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This thesis is an investigation into the moisture performance of straw bales used in the construction of buildings. The principle of taking bales of straw off the field and stacking them up on themselves to form the walls of a simple building is a practise that started over a hundred years ago. The modern form of this building method is more sophisticated, and is spreading world wide from its origins in the arid regions of America. Despite advances in modern methods of construction there has been concern and doubt over the suitability of straw bale for use as a building …

Conditioning Democratization: Eu Membership Conditionality And Domestic Politics In Balkan Institutional Reforms, Ridvan Peshkopia
Conditioning Democratization: Eu Membership Conditionality And Domestic Politics In Balkan Institutional Reforms, Ridvan Peshkopia
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The uneven effects of EU membership conditionality on Eastern European reforms continue to puzzle the research community. Sometimes, the research focus has been too large, considering EU membership conditionality as a policy implemented uniformly across policy areas. Other efforts take a too narrow approach by trying to explain the effects of EU membership conditionality in single sectors. I suggest studying this phenomenon through a set of mid-level theories in a cross-country, cross-sectorial approach. I argue that both the intensity of EU membership conditionality and reform outcomes are contingent upon the policy sector context; hence, we should take a sectorial contextual …
Dynamic Cloth For The Digital Character, Martin Furness
Dynamic Cloth For The Digital Character, Martin Furness
All Theses
Cloth simulation tends to have a lingering reputation for being notoriously complex and therefore casually avoided. Very few artists are enthusiastic about a cloth simulator's primary use, and perhaps even fewer would consider cloth simulation for anything other than clothing. This thesis presents typical practices of cloth simulation based on the artistic perspective of a Cloth Technical Director (TD) who worked on the animated feature film and applied case study, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009). Through proof of concept using a generic character, simple props, and commercial software, key techniques are demonstrated to replicate the workflow of clothing …

Research Papers
This document contains the extended program notes for the graduate vocal recital of Ms. Ashly S. Thomas which took place on March 31, 2011 at the Old Baptist Foundation recital hall on the campus of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. These extended program notes include the repertoire list for the performance along with the translations of the pieces in foreign languages. The repertoire list includes standard opera arias from the Baroque period, Classical period, and the Romantic period. The list also includes German lieder, and French mélodie and operetta (which was sung in English, hence no translation is included). …
The Impact Of Company Grade Officer Self-Sacrificial Behavior On Subordinate Assessments Of Leader Charisma, Danjel Bout
The Impact Of Company Grade Officer Self-Sacrificial Behavior On Subordinate Assessments Of Leader Charisma, Danjel Bout
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Newly commissioned officers in the U.S. Army are taught to lead their soldiers from the front and to voluntarily make personal sacrifices in the service of the nation. Although this facet of military culture is seen as critical to the integrity of the force, there are few research studies describing the impact of leader self-sacrifice in the U.S. Army. Research evolving from the transformational leadership literature indicates that civilian leaders who engage in self-sacrificial behavior are viewed as more charismatic than their counterparts and that this perception is particularly pronounced in crisis situations. The current study extended this research to …

Censoring Crimes, Barak Y. Orbach, Allison S. Woolston
Censoring Crimes, Barak Y. Orbach, Allison S. Woolston
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
Concerns regarding the harmful influence of films on youth and adults have always motivated censorship and justified, in some minds, greater government control over content. Many motion pictures portray illegal conduct-theft, robbery, embezzlement, arson, drug dealing, assault, rape, murder, treason, and other crimes. In most instances, commission of the underlying crime is not needed for the production of the film. Despite the perpetual fear of the "capacity for evil" of films, the legality of motion pictures that commercialize crimes has not been studied as a concept. This Essay explores the reasons for this neglect and examines the problems this omission …
[Introduction To] A L'Ull De L'Huracà: Teatre Català Contemporani, Sharon G. Feldman
[Introduction To] A L'Ull De L'Huracà: Teatre Català Contemporani, Sharon G. Feldman
Bookshelf
Sonic Pleasure, Absence And The History Of The Self: An Alternative Approach To The Criticism Of Sound Art, Jonathan W. Marshall
Sonic Pleasure, Absence And The History Of The Self: An Alternative Approach To The Criticism Of Sound Art, Jonathan W. Marshall
Sound Scripts
Historical, psychoanalytic and cinema criticism have characterised the history of Western modernity and the individual subject as founded upon an affective lack. Pleasure is solicited by the promise of fullness, but this is never fulfilled, fuelling further desire. Sound art however is more typically theorised as inherently present and immersive, as a form that offers direct experience, which literally touches the subject. I draw upon the work of Jonathan Sterne, Steven Connor, psychoanalysis and film criticism to rearticulate not just modernist media and subjectivity as characterised by lack and absence, but the perception of aestheticised sound. Starting with an analysis …
Advice And Consent Vs. Silence And Dissent? The Contrasting Roles Of The Legislature In U.S. And U.K. Judicial Appointments, Mary Clark
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The Senate‘s role in judicial appointments has come under increasingly withering criticism for its uninformative and spectacle-like nature. At the same time, Britain has established two new judicial appointment processes - to accompany its new Supreme Court and existing lower courts - in which Parliament plays no role. This Article seeks to understand the reasons for the inclusion and exclusion of the legislature in the U.S. and U.K. judicial appointment processes adopted at the creation of their respective Supreme Courts.
The Article proceeds by highlighting the ideas and concerns motivating inclusion of the legislature in judicial appointments in the early …

Beyond Heard: Young Adults In North Kivu, Eastern Democratic Republic Of Congo, Their Resilience And Role In Peacebuilding., Cynthia Tarter
Capstone Collection
People in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) have faced decades of direct and structural impacts from conflict and war. Of the many key actors in the peace process of DR Congo, the voice and capacity of young adults is generally left unheard. This study examines the role of Congolese young adults in peacebuilding in conjunction with identifying contextual protective factors of resilience. The role foreign aid workers have in development and conflict interventions is an included backdrop of focus.
Primary research data was gathered from rural communities in North Kivu from July 2010 – February 2011, and …

Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg
Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Informed by the theories of Henri Lefebvre regarding the production of space and the theories of scale found in current scholarship in Cultural Geography, my methodology analyzes both dramatic texts and theater spaces to investigate how cultural production and capital converge in the “spectacle” of urban space. While employing this term “spectacle” to describe how dramatic texts, theater productions, and modern architecture transform the urban landscape into a metaphoric theater space for the production of local, national, and global identities, this project examines the relationship between theater and urban change in Lavapiés, an iconic, multicultural, and oftenunderserved neighborhood located in …
Performing Marginal Identities: Understanding The Cultural Significance Of Tawa'if And Rudali Through The Language Of The Body In South Asian Cinema, Lise Danielle Hurlstone
Performing Marginal Identities: Understanding The Cultural Significance Of Tawa'if And Rudali Through The Language Of The Body In South Asian Cinema, Lise Danielle Hurlstone
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines the representation of the lives and performances of tawa'if and rudali in South Asian cinema to understand their marginalization as performers, and their significance in the collective consciousness of the producers and consumers of Indian cultural artifacts. The critical textual analysis of six South Asian films reveals these women as caste-amorphous within the system of social stratification in India, and therefore captivating in the potential they present to achieve a complex and multi-faceted definition of culture. Qualitative interviews with 4 Indian classical dance instructors in Portland, Oregon and performative observations of dance events indicate the importance of …
No Virtue In Passivity: The Supreme Court And Ali Al-Marri, Bruce Miller, Western New England University School Of Law
No Virtue In Passivity: The Supreme Court And Ali Al-Marri, Bruce Miller, Western New England University School Of Law
Western New England Law Review
This Article discusses the case of Al-Marri v. Spagone, which the U.S. Supreme Court unjustifiably dismissed as moot on March 6, 2009. By dismissing this appeal, the Court ignored its duty to determine whether the military detention of a non-citizen residing lawfully in the United States was authorized by law. And that failure has in turn contributed significantly, and unnecessarily, to the cloud of legal uncertainty which now hovers over the preventive detention measures adopted and proposed by the Obama Administration.
A Mythography Of The Crossroads:How Is The Severance/Threshold/Return Progression In Both Mythology And Modern Wilderness Rites-Of-Passage Established Through Metaphor? An Enquiry Conducted Through Contemporary Storytelling Practice, Martin Shaw
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
How is the Severance/Threshold/Return progression in both mythology and modern wilderness rites-of-passage established through metaphor? An enquiry conducted through contemporary storytelling practice. This research examines the metaphorical structures within seven selected myths in relation to wilderness rites-of-passage, and the key thematic progression of Severance/Threshold/Return. These rites-of-passage are an essential component of an ongoing programme offered to the general public. The research is primarily creative in that the oral texts have been developed from extant myth over several years, and adapted to a variety of performance contexts. The evolution of these oral texts is examined in an analytical text, which draws …
The Overhyped Path From Tinker To Morse: How The Student Speech Cases Show The Limits Of Supreme Court Decisions--For The Law And For The Litigants, Scott A. Moss
Publications
Each of the Supreme Court's high school student speech cases reflected the social angst of its era. In 1965's Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, three Iowa teens broke school rules to wear armbands protesting the Vietnam War. In 1983, amidst parental and political upset about youth exposure to sexuality in the media, Bethel School District No. 403 v. Fraser and Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier allowed the censorship of an innuendo-filled student government speech and a school newspaper article on teen pregnancy and parental divorce. In 2007, Morse v. Frederick paralleled the rise of reality television …
A Diva Defends Herself: Gender And Domestic Violence In An Early Twentieth-Century Headline Trial, Carolyn B. Ramsey
A Diva Defends Herself: Gender And Domestic Violence In An Early Twentieth-Century Headline Trial, Carolyn B. Ramsey
Publications
This short article was presented as part of a symposium on headline criminal trials, organized by St. Louis University School of Law in honor of Lawrence Friedman. It describes and analyzes the self-defense acquittal of opera singer Mae Talbot in Nevada in 1910 on charges of murdering her abusive husband. Based on extensive research into archival trial records and newspaper reports, the article discusses how the press, the court, and trial lawyers on both sides depicted the killing and Mae’s possible defenses. Without discounting the sensationalism and entertainment value, to a scandal-hungry public, of stories about violent marriages, I contend …
