Effects Of Goal Maintenance Training On Executive Control In Older Adults, Jessica Paxton

Due to the fact that executive control abilities are necessary for successful execution of many cognitive and real-world tasks, interest has arisen in determining how these abilities can be improved. A previous study demonstrated that both practice and strategy training improved performance in older adults on an executive control task requiring goal maintenance abilities: Paxton et al., 2006), but no previous research has investigated the amount of exposure to this executive control task during training. Nineteenth-century Germany saw an expansion of choral music in a secular context, bringing about changes not only in the nature of the organizations but also in the character of the music. Often depicted in history books as the age of the Lied, the early nineteenth century was also the age of the Chorgesang, creating a demand for music for social gatherings. Amateur choruses and partsinging reached their peak of popularity in nineteenth-century Germany. National History And The Novel In 1930s Britain, Erica Delsandro

Although indebted to scholars whose work has illuminated the distinctiveness of 1930s Britain, "National History and the Novel in 1930s Britain" argues that rather than seeking distinction, writers of the period were more concerned with the task of contextualizing their decade and their own position within a national historiography from which they felt the Great War and military masculinities had excluded them. Focusing on the novelists Christopher Isherwood, Evelyn Waugh, and Virginia Woolf, and the philosopher of history, R. G. Collingwood, I describe how the 1930s inheritors of British cultural privilege found themselves symbolically disenfranchised from a national identity inextricably …

Conversation Elaboration And Emotional Well-Being In Perceived Social Support, Justin P. Andrews

Social support is an extremely diverse topic. It is the subject of approximately forty thousand scholarly articles when entered into the Grand Valley State University library database under the keyword, “social support.” For example, social support has been linked to positive psychological health and low rates of disorders (Barrera, 1986; Finch, Okun, Pool & Ruehlman, 1999; Sarason, Sarason & Gurung, 2001), major depression (Lakey & Cronin, 2008), and posttraumatic stress disorder (Brewin, Andrews, & Valentine, 2000). Grise relates to the audience with another dose of humor when she attempts to suck in her panza to fit into a pair of jeans. Alas, after all the jumping and tugging to fit into the jeans, Grise faces her biggest challenge: the roll of flesh bulging out from the zipper. Here, handy dandy pliers are brought to the rescue. She uses them to pull up the zipper and then victoriously stuffs the panza into her pants. This note examines the history of scarlet letter punishments. These types of sanctions raise many constitutional concerns; this Note will specifically address First Amendment compelled speech. Different standards of constitutional review for First Amendment violations and probation conditions will also be discussed. The note will also explain how Ohio's special license plate violates the First Amendment. Because the license plate is a legislative requirement that infringes upon free speech and eliminates judicial sentencing discretion, the state's interest must pass strict scrutiny. This analysis will confirm that the state's interest is legitimate but not compelling. The special license plate fails to …

Decotitles, The Animated Discourse Of Fox's Recent Anglophonic Internationalism, D. T. Kofoed

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

My paper examines the radical, popular reconception of the subtitle's status initiated by films like Tony Scott's 2004 Man on Fire, Timur Bekmambetov's Night Watch [Nochnoy Dozor] and its 2006 sequel, and Danny Boyle's 2008 Best Picture winning Slumdog Millionaire. Subtitles have been redirected from their customarily subsidiary, external position to become a central aspect of the filmic mise-en-scene. The establishment of anti-conventional decotitles represents the possibility of a stabile third term in the debates over subbing versus dubbing. A new aesthetic paradigm has emerged—one which places emphasis not on translation and ventriloquism, a confrontation with …

Facing Off: French And English In Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Heather Macdougall

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This essay performs a sociolinguistic analysis of Bon Cop Bad Cop (Eric Canuel, 2006), a bilingual action-comedy which succeeded in becoming the highest-grossing domestically-produced film in Canadian history. The paper employs research methods that have productively been applied to multilingual texts and to other aspects of the dynamic between English and French in Canada. The evidence presented, particularly the analysis of subtitling, contests the ideal of a monolingual nation-state: Bon Cop, Bad Cop’s popular success in both English and French Canada can be seen as an indication that even monolingual Canadians identify with the bilingual nature of their national …

Crank Dat Soulja Boy: Understanding Black Male Hip Hop Aspiration In Rural Mississippi, Bruce O'Brian Foster

Aspirations and attainment are affected by a number of factors, including socioeconomic status, neighborhood setting, family influence, and peer socialization. While previous scholarship has focused on these factors, separately and collectively, this research will examine an understudied but prevalent dynamic; Hip-Hop aspirations. Specifically, this research focuses on the relationship between aspirations to r^ and the space/place dynamics of the rural South. Drawing on qualitative data collected in rural. Southern communities through ethnographic research methods, this research explores how Black male aspirations may manifest themselves in ways that have come to be perceived as alternative and oppositional.
