To Speak Or Not To Speak: The Implications Of Silence In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Margaret Rose Jones Jan 2011

To Speak Or Not To Speak: The Implications Of Silence In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Margaret Rose Jones

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis explores the function and importance of silence throughout William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Along with analysis of Shakespeare's text, this thesis also reviews and analyzes three film versions of the play: Laurence Olivier's 1948 production, Kenneth Branagh's 1996 production, and Michael Almereyda's 2000 production. All of these showcase various depictions of silence while working with the same Shakespearian text and plotline. Throughout the text and film analyses this thesis explores three areas in which silence plays an important role: refusal to join a conversation, emotional distress rendering someone silent, and societal limitations placed on the individual. This thesis attempts …

Aristotle, Performativity, And Perfect Friendship In Shakespeare, Ryan Engley Jan 2011

Aristotle, Performativity, And Perfect Friendship In Shakespeare, Ryan Engley

Undergraduate Review

From childhood, most of us have been taught that our “identity,” both how we see ourselves and how others see us, is shaped at least in part by our friends: “you are the company you keep,” as the cliché goes. Experience will teach us that not all friendships are the same, much less equal, even if we never hear of Aristotle and his tripartite scale of friend-types. His categories were of course born of the classical world but, true to fashion, remain valuable barometers for measuring individual identity and desire in friendships. They’re useful, too, in understanding Shakespeare’s characters and …

Cultural Perspectives On Globalisation And Ireland, Eamon Maher Jan 2011

Cultural Perspectives On Globalisation And Ireland, Eamon Maher

Books

In the space of a few short decades, Ireland has become one of the most globalised societies in the Western world. The full ramifications of this transformation for traditional Irish communities, religious practice, economic activity, as well as literature and the arts, are as yet unknown. What is known is that Ireland’s largely unthinking embrace of globalisation has at times had negative consequences. Unlike some other European countries, Ireland has eagerly and sometimes recklessly grasped the opportunities for material advancement afforded by the global project.

This collection of essays, largely the fruit of two workshops organised under the auspices of …

Sabbatical Leave Proposal And Sabbatical 2011 (Blog), Paul Young Jan 2011

Sabbatical Leave Proposal And Sabbatical 2011 (Blog), Paul Young

Sabbaticals

I am an associate professor at Parkland College in Champaign IL USA. After teaching graphic design full-time for 10 years, I'm very pleased to be taking a semester off for sabbatical leave in spring 2011. My sabbatical application was approved on December 22, 2009 and we immediately starting making plans. With an extented period of time available for recuperation and renewal, my partner and I wanted to do some serious traveling. At first, we thought an around-the-world trip would be rather exciting, but both the cost and weather proved to be challenging. So we narrowed our choices down to destinations …

Sabbatical Leave Report, Laura Jamison Jan 2011

Sabbatical Leave Report, Laura Jamison

Sabbaticals

As a professor and social worker, I'd been intrigued by Jane Addams for years. She is routinely discussed in introductory social work and sociology texts as a significant historical figure. She has been described as a selfless social reformer and as a catalyst in the American settlement house movement. I always felt that she deserved far more attention than she received in the texts- and from our students. I used my spring 2011 sabbatical leave to accomplish two different but complementary goals-engaging in research to acquire a greater depth of knowledge of Addams and also developing a strategy for how …

Acting Virtuous: Chastity, Theatricality, And The Tragedie Of Mariam, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2011

Acting Virtuous: Chastity, Theatricality, And The Tragedie Of Mariam, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Given the interrelation of female chastity and female theatricality in early modem discourses, it comes as no surprise that both figure importantly in what is believed to be the first original English drama to be written by a woman. As Elizabeth Cary explores a Jewish queen 's sexual purity in The Tragedie of Mariam, she does so by concentrating on questions of performance. Cary's title character explicitly abjures theatricality even as she embraces chastity, creating a fissure in Renaissance discourses on women that threatens to swallow up the antifeminist idea that female chastity is always an act.

An Ethico-Politics Of Subaltern Representations In Post-9/11 Documentary Film, Joseph D. Parker Jan 2011

An Ethico-Politics Of Subaltern Representations In Post-9/11 Documentary Film, Joseph D. Parker

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

The World War Without End (WWWoE), formerly known as the War on Terror,ii is one of those rare occasions when a gendered subaltern population comes to the attention of the nation-state. If the subaltern is understood as something akin to illiterate rural women from the global South, then she now has the full attention of the White House and Downing Street, the US State Department, CNN and Time magazine.iii In official state positions and in media coverage, interest in the subaltern is often expressed in humanitarian attention to the rights or freedoms of these subaltern women in order to justify …

Perceptions Of Nepalese Physicians And Nurses On The Shortage Of Health Care Professionals In Nepal, Shyamala Shiwakoti Jan 2011

Perceptions Of Nepalese Physicians And Nurses On The Shortage Of Health Care Professionals In Nepal, Shyamala Shiwakoti

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Non-conventional therapies have been termed and captured by the phrase Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), since the establishment of The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), by the Federal Government in 1992. With the use of CAM on the rise in the baby boom population and the expectation that the number of nursing home residents is expected to double by 2020, it is imperative that healthcare providers gain more knowledge in effective means for treating the geriatric population holistically. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the implementation of a CAM intervention program in a sample …
