On Earth As It Is
I wonder sometimes
why
in that flashing instant
I agreed to this.
To the straining of ligaments
pressed
by my created creator
widening, in my blood-red womb.

The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza
The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza
Theology Department Faculty Publications
For the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), the Holy Spirit appears to serve as a key in understanding and interpreting other religious traditions and how the Church is to relate with their followers. The Asian bishops consistently affirm that the Holy Spirit is actively present in other religions and that these religions contain expressions and practices that are inspired and prompted by the Spirit. This is why these manifestations of the Spirit’s presence demands critical discernment and that these must be in dialogue with the Spirit’s activity in the Church. In and through this the Spirit’s manifold works within …

The Arts And Australian Education: Realising Potential, Robyn Ewing
The Arts And Australian Education: Realising Potential, Robyn Ewing
Australian Education Review
AER 58 surveys the international and national research on the role and effect of arts-rich programming in schools and in the broader community, and examines the policies and practices that inhibit or support these initiatives. It puts the case that embedding the Arts in learning would be a powerful catalyst for educational and social reform in Australia, since arts-rich experiences can benefit students academically and socially, revitalise school curricula and foster the development of much needed creativity and imaginative thinking. Section 1 discusses and defines ‘the Arts’ collectively, as a way of knowing and learning – embodying play, inquiry, experimentation, …

Deathly Erichtho As Vital To Lucan’S Bellum Ciuile, John Byron Young
Deathly Erichtho As Vital To Lucan’S Bellum Ciuile, John Byron Young
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Lucan’s Bellum Ciuile has provided much difficulty for scholars in the identification of a hero, as none of the main characters of the epic, Caesar, Pompey, and Cato, fully become a hero. I argue that a minor character, Erichtho, the necromancer in book 6, is not only the hero, but also the supreme uates and reflection of the poet. Through her comparison with Scaeva in book 6 as well as Aeneas of Vergil’s Aeneid and her interactions with Sextus Pompey, her heroism becomes fully developed. She creates a corpse uates through her vatic powers and gains access into the Underworld …

Living Culture Embodied: Constructing Meaning In The Contra Dance Community, Kathryn E. Young
Living Culture Embodied: Constructing Meaning In The Contra Dance Community, Kathryn E. Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In light of both the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the efforts of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in producing the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, it has become clear that work with intangible cultural heritage in museums necessitates staff to carry out ethnographic fieldwork among heritage communities. In order to illustrate this methodology, an ethnographic study was conducted in the Denver contra dance community to better explore conceptions of value and meaning related to the community by its members. Further, the contra dance findings point to certain issues related to defining …
Adolescents' Affective Engagement With Theatre: Surveying Middle School Students' Attitudes, Values, And Beliefs., Matt
Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
This essay explores how viewing a single Theatre for Young Audiences production might affect the attitudes, values, and/or beliefs of adolescent spectators. Data is drawn from a mixed-methods case study performed with middle school students who viewed a professional performance for young people, and is considered through the lens of cognitive studies in light of advances in research considering the human mirror neuron system. Data suggest it is highly probable that under certain circumstances viewing a single Theatre for Young Audiences production can influence the values of adolescent spectators. The essay concludes by exploring the ethical ramifications of these findings.
