Academic Predictors Of National Council Licensure Examination For Registered Nurses Pass Rates, Maybeth J. Elliott Jan 2011

Academic Predictors Of National Council Licensure Examination For Registered Nurses Pass Rates, Maybeth J. Elliott

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The United States continues to be affected by a severe, long-standing nursing shortage that is not projected to resolve within the next 10 or more years. Unsuccessful passage of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) among graduate nurses remains one of several key contributors to the nursing shortage. The goal of this study was to identify if either cumulative fall semester GPA; the overall prenursing science, mathematics, and English GPA; type of high school background; TOEFL score; clinical pass or fail; and on-time program completion best predicted passage of NCLEX-RN. Archived records from the academic years of …

Courts' Increasing Consideration Of Behavioral Genetics Evidence In Criminal Cases: Results Of A Longitudinal Study, Deborah W. Denno Jan 2011

Courts' Increasing Consideration Of Behavioral Genetics Evidence In Criminal Cases: Results Of A Longitudinal Study, Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

This article, which is part of a symposium honoring David Baldus, presents a unique study of all criminal cases (totaling thirty-three) that addressed behavioral genetics evidence from June 1, 2007, to July 1, 2011. The study builds upon this author’s prior research on all criminal cases (totaling forty-eight) that used such evidence during the preceding thirteen years (1994-2007). This combined collection of eighty-one criminal cases employing behavioral genetics evidence offers a rich context for determining how the criminal justice system has been handling genetics factors for nearly two decades, but also why the last four years reveal particularly important discoveries. …

Stories In Pictures (And Non-Pictorial Objects): A Narratological And Cognitive Psychological Approach, Michael Ranta Jan 2011

Stories In Pictures (And Non-Pictorial Objects): A Narratological And Cognitive Psychological Approach, Michael Ranta

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Narratological studies have frequently focused upon linguistic structures, considered to be paradigmatic cases of narrativity, while pictorial signs, such as icons and symbols or indices, have received comparably much less attention. In this paper, however, some basic and regularly occurring narrative aspects of pictures and non-pictorial objects will be presented and discussed.

Aura, Self, And Aesthetic Experience, Marshall Battani Jan 2011

Aura, Self, And Aesthetic Experience, Marshall Battani

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Aesthetic experiences are generated in encounters with cultural objects and such experiences are marked by the free play of cognitive and numinous experience unstructured by concepts. Kant’s famous three types of pleasure, made infamous in social theory by Pierre Bourdieu, are examined in relation to the critical theoretical concept of aura, the social psychology of “flow,” and cognitive explanations of perception to explain experience in aesthetic fields. Theories of aesthetic experience developed at the crossroad of critical social thought and cognitive science hold promise for a social analysis able to avoid the usual sociological pitfalls of either ignoring aesthetics or …

Black Club Women's Purposes For Establishing Kindergartens In The Progressive Era, 1890-1910, Jean Marie Robbins Jan 2011

Black Club Women's Purposes For Establishing Kindergartens In The Progressive Era, 1890-1910, Jean Marie Robbins

Dissertations

Little literature exists that examines black people's efforts to educate their young children during the Progressive Era. It was the period in which early childhood education in the form of kindergarten began to flourish in the United States and around the world. Even in the abundance of literature about kindergarten's successes and its potential to transform impoverished families, the overwhelmingly poor black population remained invisible to the great majority of researchers writing about the progress of that movement.

Yet primary historical documents, such as the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (NACW) records, manuscripts, and Progressive Era newspapers, reveal that …

New Mexico's Cuarto Centenario: History In Visual Dialogue, Alison Fields Jan 2011

New Mexico's Cuarto Centenario: History In Visual Dialogue, Alison Fields

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

Out of the aftermath of the New Mexico Cuarto Centenario (the four hundredth anniversary of the Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate's 1598 settlement in present-day New Mexico) came a pledge to create a memorial for the conquistador. The memorial was envisioned as a tri-cultural endeavor, with Reynaldo "Sonny" Rivera, Betty Sabo, and Nora Naranjo-Morse collaborating. Because of his complex legacy, the three artists could not agree on how to represent Oñate. Rivera and Sabo ultimately crafted a series of bronze statues of Oñate and his entourage titled "La Jornada," while Naranjo-Morse created an earthwork titled "Numbe Whageh." These two …

If You Can’T Play Nice, Play Roller Derby: Investigating Gender Performativity In Women’S Flat Track Roller Derby, Valerie Cannon Jan 2011

If You Can’T Play Nice, Play Roller Derby: Investigating Gender Performativity In Women’S Flat Track Roller Derby, Valerie Cannon

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby is one of few contact sports available to women in the U.S. in which women play by the same rules as men. Contact sports are traditionally a male dominated arena in the United States. Rollergirls both challenge and negotiate socially constructed gender norms by participating in this contact sport while dressing and fundraising according to heteronormative concepts of sex appeal and femininity. While Rollergirls demonstrate their strength and endurance on the track, they often do so under a derby persona, emphasizing their femininity to counterbalance their participation in a masculine activity. In this manner, Rollergirls …

Optimization Of Piezoelectric Transducers Using Sdoe, Devin Delong Jan 2011

Optimization Of Piezoelectric Transducers Using Sdoe, Devin Delong

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

A common problem surrounding piezoelectric transducers is matching the highimpedance active piezoelectric element with a low-impedance load, typically water or skin. This is a common problem with medical devices [Ali00]. Matching layers are added in an attempt to gradually decrease the impedance of the active piezoelectric element down to the impedance of water. If the impedance is not gradually decreased, acoustic waves are reflected at the boundaries that are proportional to the impedance mismatch of the two materials. A dual-matching layer transducer is analyzed, and we attempt to optimize the impedances and thicknesses of the two matching layers using statistical …

Atrophy Or Progress? Evaluating The Evolution Of Environmental Policy By Comparing Large Scale Oil Spills In The United States, Nicole Henken Jan 2011

Atrophy Or Progress? Evaluating The Evolution Of Environmental Policy By Comparing Large Scale Oil Spills In The United States, Nicole Henken

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Many political theorists accept that focusing events effect the cycle of environmental policy change without agreeing on the specifics of how events impact the construction of legislation. Pessimistic theories (consisting of Down’s “Issue Attention Cycle” and Freudenburg’s “Atrophy of Vigilance”) and optimistic theories (including the “Punctuated Equilibrium Model” and Busenberg’s “Evolution of Vigilance Model”) offer opposing views of policy creation. As focusing events, the Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon oil spills together serve as effective cases for assessing and comparing the validity of pessimistic and optimistic policy change models. The analysis of each set of theories adds to the understanding …

Fearful Symmetry: Using William Blake To Contextualize Alan Moore’S Watchmen, Megan Hesse Jan 2011

Fearful Symmetry: Using William Blake To Contextualize Alan Moore’S Watchmen, Megan Hesse

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Alan Moore’s graphic novel Watchmen redefined the superhero genre, elevating comics from entertainment to literature. Though published over twenty-five years ago, Watchmen tells a story of human corruption that still resonates today. While he has inspired many modern graphic novelists, he owes a literary debt to his forefathers; in this case, Romanticist poet William Blake. Blake’s themes of duality and the symmetrical nature of innocence and experience are revisited and reinterpreted in Moore’s work. By interpreting Watchmen through the lens of Blake’s poems and engravings, both author’s vision of humanity comes into focus. Blake sees human nature as a duality, …

Fabricating History: The Making Of The Molly Maguires, Ashley Irizarry Jan 2011

Fabricating History: The Making Of The Molly Maguires, Ashley Irizarry

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This thesis focuses on the popular and historical image of the Molly Maguires, an Irish-American terrorist labor group in the 1870s, and addresses the process of building a historical record about a particular issue. Since there is very little direct information about the Molly Maguires, we know about them through contemporaries, historians and fiction writers, who were often antagonistic to the Molly Maguires. The limitations of our knowledge on the Molly Maguire calls into question whether our picture of the Mollies can even be considered historical. Although current evidence belies efforts to create an accurate historical picture of the Molly …

Racializing The Queer: Racialized Bodies And The Construction Of Gay And Lesbian Identities, Andy López Jan 2011

Racializing The Queer: Racialized Bodies And The Construction Of Gay And Lesbian Identities, Andy López

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The contemporary Gay and Lesbian movement emphasizes “identity” in an effort to unify all people being marginalized based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. However, such an “identity” falls short of inclusion of all people of color, and becomes a tool for the oppression of those who do not fall within the contexts already defined. This paper will highlight parallels between the construction of racialized sexuality and the construction of “gay” and “lesbian” identities. Moreover, I will examine the ways in which Race Studies and Gay & Lesbian Studies are entangled in the context of American culture, particularly with …

The Death Of Privacy: An Empirical Analysis Of Fourth Amendment Jurisprudence, Wesley Mathieu Jan 2011

The Death Of Privacy: An Empirical Analysis Of Fourth Amendment Jurisprudence, Wesley Mathieu

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Privacy as a legal concept affects every single American citizen whether they know it or not. Justice Harlan's concurrence in Katz v. United States, 389 U.S. 347 defined an expectation of privacy as one that society must recognize as objectively reasonable. The court has used this doctrine to establish different privacy tests for different situations, yet has never empirically determined whether its decisions accurately reflect society's view of what is 'reasonable.' To that end, this paper will examine the philosophical and historical origins of the right to privacy, and well as its development by the Supreme Court to its current …

The Antecedents Of Attitudes Toward Homosexuality: A Comparison Of The Effects Of Disgust, Openness, Religion And Contact On Anti-Gay Attitudes, Jessica Newton Jan 2011

The Antecedents Of Attitudes Toward Homosexuality: A Comparison Of The Effects Of Disgust, Openness, Religion And Contact On Anti-Gay Attitudes, Jessica Newton

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this study, I examined the structure of predictors of attitudes toward homosexuality in a sample of nearly 800 respondents. Predictors included measures of personality (Openness to Experience), emotion (Disgust), beliefs (Religiosity), other attitudes (Social Dominance Orientation and Right-Wing Authoritarianism), as well as prior exposure to homosexuals (Contact). These variables were examined in a series of statistical analyses in the prediction of Homonegativity (anti-gay attitudes). I anticipated that Contact would serve as a mediator of relationships between the remaining predictors and anti-gay attitudes. As predicted, Contact did partially mediate the relationship between two of the antecedent variables (Openness and Religiosity) …

Ethnosexual Frontiers: Where Art Meets Race Within International Politics, Renata Rodriguez-Bozzetto Jan 2011

Ethnosexual Frontiers: Where Art Meets Race Within International Politics, Renata Rodriguez-Bozzetto

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Since the economic crisis from 2007, an extensive debate matching unemployment and immigration has been central to conservative discourses. Although progressive organizations have been critical of the SB1070 law in Arizona for its pervasive racial profiling content, some individuals seem to ignore the strong history of legislation, cultural apparatus and social norms that were made to support white supremacy within the history of United States. As immigration comes to the American debate, various politics adopted by the United States towards South American countries have been ignored. My objective with this research is to take a closer look at the artistic …

An Animal Model Of Performance Enhancing Drugs And Catastrophic Interference, Akiva Rabinowitz Jan 2011

An Animal Model Of Performance Enhancing Drugs And Catastrophic Interference, Akiva Rabinowitz

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The neural networks that underlie memory and learning are some of the most complex systems that scientists seek to describe. Recent research has demonstrated that drugs which increase synaptic plasticity possess the capacity to enhance memory. The question that the present study sought to address was whether it is possible that cognition-enhancing drugs might enhance some memories to the detriment of others. Mice of the C57BL/6J inbred strain were trained on the Morris water maze task. They were then transferred over to a second, similar, water maze and trained using either the cognition-enhancing drug apamin or saline injected intraperitoneally. A …

History Of Misunderstanding: The Colonization Of New Zealand, William Rumbold Jan 2011

History Of Misunderstanding: The Colonization Of New Zealand, William Rumbold

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Through examination of first contact between the British Empire and the Maori natives of New Zealand, as well as the failed treaty attempt between the two, I aim to illustrate England’s role in the escalation of conflict between these two cultures. Although at first glance it appears that the war was an eventual escalation of previous tensions, I maintain that British officials in New Zealand had the resources and the knowledge to prevent the New Zealand land war. They used this knowledge to speed up the process of conquest. The British crown was trying to conquer the Maori through ambiguous …

Analysis Of Mutant Manganese-Superoxide Dismutase On The Lifespan Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae"", Sarah Salem Jan 2011

Analysis Of Mutant Manganese-Superoxide Dismutase On The Lifespan Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae"", Sarah Salem

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Previously isolated mutants of the superoxide dismutase 2 gene (SOD2), selected for increased activity in E. coli, were transformed into yeast cells in order to observe their effects on aging. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing were used to confirm that the yeast incorporated the mutant form of the gene. The strains with mutant forms of the SOD2 gene were observed to have decreased growth rates compared to the unmutated strain. Lifespan analyses were then conducted in order to see if yeast with mutant versions of SOD2 had lifespans that differed significantly from those with the unmutated forms of the …

Fundamental Value And Transaction Frequency: A Cross Sectional Study In Residential Lots, Katherine Towers Jan 2011

Fundamental Value And Transaction Frequency: A Cross Sectional Study In Residential Lots, Katherine Towers

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The existence of market bubbles raises questions about economists‘ long held assumptions of rationality, costless arbitrage, and the efficient market hypothesis. I take a theoretical approach to the debate on market efficiency by modeling a ―no-value asset,‖ which are residential vacant lots that cannot be developed. I employ a data set that naturally controls for a number of market characteristics thought to contribute to inefficiency. I find that no-value assets traded persistently during the market upturn, in the early 2000s, suggesting limits to arbitrage. In the absence of inefficiency-causing market characteristics, the behavior of agents is likely the cause. To …

Lysander Spooner, Lifestyle Anarchism, And Jury Nullification, Ed Skrod Jan 2011

Lysander Spooner, Lifestyle Anarchism, And Jury Nullification, Ed Skrod

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Individual anarchism, a social movement of the early nineteenth century, was founded on the principles of self-sovereignty and individualism. One such anarchist, Lysander Spooner, argues in “Vices are not Crimes” that vices should not be criminalized by the State. To do so, “deprive*s+ every man of his… liberty to pursue his own happiness.”1 I argue that Spooner’s essay lays the foundation for “lifestyle anarchism,” the doctrine that all the affairs of human beings within the domain of their lifestyle choices (provided they do not harm the person or property of another), should be managed by individuals or voluntary associations. One …

Three Assassins: Women, Revolution And Violence In Modern World History, Ashleah Zigmond Jan 2011

Three Assassins: Women, Revolution And Violence In Modern World History, Ashleah Zigmond

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This thesis examines three women who committed the unprecedented crime of attempting to assassinate a key male figure in three separate times and places. It involves the government’s and society’s reaction and implications about the role of gender in the violent deeds transforming society at times of revolutionary upheaval. The women examined are Charlotte Corday from eighteenth century France, Vera Zasulich from nineteenth century Russia, and Shi Jianqiao from twentieth century China. These women shared numerous qualities that, when combined, provided the women with the ability to see themselves as equals in the patriarchal societies in which they lived, allowing …

Information Surfing For Radiation Building, Chaouki T. Abdallah, R.A. Cortez, H.G. Tanner, R. Lumia

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We develop a control scheme for a group of mobile sensors to map radiation over a given planar polygonal region. The advantage of this methodology is that it provides quick situational awareness regarding radiation levels, which is being updated and refined in real- time as more measurements become available. The control algorithm is based on the concept of information surfing, where navigation is done by following information gradients, taking into account sensing performance and the dynamics of the observed process

Why I Can't Love The Homemade Semantic Web, Jason Bengtson Jan 2011

Why I Can't Love The Homemade Semantic Web, Jason Bengtson

Publications

Almost all information professionals agree that the web needs to move to a semantic structure. While work is proceeding in this area, movements to get individual web authors to use semantic markup tools have also been on the rise. This author argues that such efforts are ill conceived and he proposes an automated alternative.
