Foot Pain Related Factors For Nursing Aides At Long-Term Care Institutions: A Preliminary Study, Chien-Hua Huang, Won-Tin Chang, Chun Pei, Chih-Chin Hsieh, Shu-Chuan Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Nursing aides at long-term care institutions need to stand and walk all day. As a result, the average burden of lower limbs for nursing aides is greater than nurses was. Feet have to bear the bodies weight as well as for support, shock absorption, and wear and tear from walking. This study investigated major factors of foot pain as caused by functional activities or the abnormal foot structures from prolonged standing and walking due to work. The participants were nursing aides at a special education school in central Taiwan. The first questionnaire gathered foot pain history for the previous three …

Correlation Of Joint Symptoms And Imaging Studies Among Patients With Hemophilia, Yen-Chun Chen, Ta-Sen Wei, Tsung-Ju Wu, Chen-Chen Liu, Ming-Ching Shen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hemophilia is an Ⅹ-linked congenital bleeding disorder, with deficiency of coagulation factor Ⅷ (hemophilia A) or factor Ⅸ (hemophilia B). Hemophilia patients often have hemarthrosis with severe joint pain, which results in joint immobility and subsequent muscle atrophy, joint contracture, and gait disturbance. This study investigated the symptoms and severity, joint involvement, and imaging findings of hemophilia patients in Taiwan.A total of 51 male participants, including 40 with hemophilia A, aged from 6 to 69 years (mean age: 27.2±15.6 years), were recruited. We evaluated clinical symptoms and joint conditions using the Colorado Physical Examination, and imaging findings using the Pettersson …

Bilateral Cataract Caused By High-Voltage Electrical Injury: A Casereport, Chin-Man Wang, Jui-Yung Yang, Pei-Ying Hsueh, Yu-Cheng Pei, Cheng-Fung Tsai, Katie P. Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Few victims can survive high-voltage electric burns in which the electricity passes through the scalp. Notably, 0.7% to 8.0% of these survivors will progressively develop cataracts caused by the electric injury. This report presents a unique case manifested with rapid visual deterioration as a result of posterior subcapsular cataract. A 36-year-old male was incidentally injured by an electric burn of 11,000 volts during work. Immediately following the injury, his vision remained sufficient in daily activities. Unfortunately, progressive non-painful visual loss developed in his right eye within a month during rehabilitation training and then later in the left eye. Ophthalmologist confirmed …

Ulnar, Median, And Radial Neuropathies After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: A Casereport, Wang-Lin Su, Chia-Yu Hsu Dec 2011

Ulnar, Median, And Radial Neuropathies After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: A Casereport, Wang-Lin Su, Chia-Yu Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Peripheral neuropathies after cardiac surgery are usually attributed to manipulation during the surgical procedure itself. A 54-year-old man developed left ulnar, median, and radial neuropathies after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery. An electrodiagnostic study indicated a lesion located in the distal part of the upper arm. In view of the anatomy, this patient most likely developed neuropathy associated with intraoperative blood pressure monitoring. Iatrogenic peripheral neuropathy after cardiac surgery should be carefully assessed to find the exact cause.

Dysphagia In Critical Illness Polyneuropathy And Myopathy: A Casereport, Hung-Chou Chen, Yen-Hsia Hsu, Shin-Ching Chen, Tyng-Guey Wang, Sung-Hui Tseng, Jiunn-Horng Kang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy (CIPNM) is a common complication seen in patients with critical illness. However, long-lasting oropharyngeal dysphagia in patients with CIPNM has not been reported previously. Besides, severe dysphagia is also a rare condition in patients with diabetes. Here, we present the case of a woman with diabetes, who developed neuromuscular weakness after recovery from severe pneumonia and respiratory failure. Brain lesion was excluded by magnetic resonance imaging of brain. CIPNM was confirmed by nerve conduction and electromyographic studies. Videofluoroscopic swallow study showed severe oropharyngeal dysphagia. The general weakness and functional status improved gradually after rehabilitation. However, …

Swallowing Therapy In Children With Bilateral Cleft Lip And Palate: A Casereport, Shih-Chung Chang, Ching-Ching Yang, Yu-Hui Huang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Other than craniofacial anomaly, children with cleft lip and palate usually have problems of speech and swallowing. Therefore, in addition to multiple sessions of operations for repair and reconstruction, active rehabilitation is also required to improve their function of speech and swallowing. This report disclosed a ten-year-old boy who depended on nasogastric tube feeding and respired via tracheotomy after birth because of bilateral cleft lip and palate as well as subglottic stenosis. He started training of swallowing and speech at the age of 8. However, having lacked adequate practice for a long period of time, coordination and strength of his …

Time Trends In Expenditures For Rural Veterans' Healthcare, Alan N. West, Todd A. Mackenzie Dec 2011

Time Trends In Expenditures For Rural Veterans' Healthcare, Alan N. West, Todd A. Mackenzie

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

We studied rural-urban differences in medical spending trends over eleven years for VA as well as non-VA care received by male veterans who used any VA services, and compared those trends to trends for other healthcare-using men. Using inflation-adjusted annual medical expenditures for non-veterans, VA users, and other veterans who participated in Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys from 1996 through 2006, we examined trends in spending on inpatient, hospital-based outpatient, office-based, pharmacy, and other care, by major payers (self/family, private insurance, Medicare, other sources, and VA), to assess changes in expenditures for the care of rural veterans, younger or older than …

Ptsd Treatment-Seeking Among Rural Latino Combat Veterans: A Review Of The Literature, Michael R. Duke, Roland S. Moore, Genevieve M. Ames Dec 2011

Ptsd Treatment-Seeking Among Rural Latino Combat Veterans: A Review Of The Literature, Michael R. Duke, Roland S. Moore, Genevieve M. Ames

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Latino combat soldiers report both higher prevalence and greater overall severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms than non-Hispanic Caucasians. However, these veterans face unique social and cultural barriers to accessing treatment for PTSD that distinguish them from their non-Hispanic white counterparts. Latino veterans who reside in rural settings face additional socio-cultural and structural impediments, in that they are likely to reside far from VA (Veterans Administration) medical facilities, have limited access to public transportation, and hold more conservative views toward mental health treatment than those residing in urban locales. However, little is known about the unique individual, sociocultural, and …

Transitioning To The Civilian Workforce: Issues Impacting The Reentry Of Rural Women Veterans, Celia Renteria Szelwach, Jill Steinkogler, Ellen R. Badger, Ria Muttukumaru

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Women veterans seeking employment in rural areas often face several challenges, such as geographical barriers, limited employment opportunities, and a lack of childcare resources within their respective communities. This exploratory study builds on the 2001 report by the Women’s Research & Education Institute (WREI), which outlined the effects of military service on women veterans’ civilian employment prospects. In addition, it explores the specific challenges through a review of current literature, assessment of Bureau of Labor Statistics datasets, and the conduct and analysis of qualitative interviews. Addressing the needs of women veterans returning to rural environments for employment requires a three-pronged …

Examination Of Post-Service Health-Related Quality Of Life Among Rural And Urban Military Members Of The Millennium Cohort Study, Susan P. Proctor, Timothy S. Wells, Kelly A. Jones, Edward J. Boyco, Tyler C. Smith

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Little information exists on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of U.S. veterans based on rural (versus urban) status, especially those in younger age groups, and whether deployment influences this outcome. We addressed these questions in the Millennium Cohort Study, a prospective investigation of U.S. military personnel assessed first in 2001 and then subsequently every three years via self-administered questionnaires. Participants separated from the military at the time of the most recent survey were eligible (n = 10,738). HRQL was assessed using the SF-36V Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores. Rural status was assigned from zip …

The Economic And Cultural Impacts Of Veterans On Rural America: The Case Of Iowa, Dan Krier, C. Richard Stockner, Paul Lasley

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Rural America has long been a crucial supplier of recruits and civilian personnel to the U.S. military. Rural America is also an essential source of cultural and political support for military activity. After their tours of duty have ended, many veterans return to rural communities where they continue to carry the values of their military experiences and extend military traditions into rural culture. Far away from the Pentagon and other corridors of military power live millions of geographically-dispersed rural veterans whose Veterans Administration benefits (cash payments, loans, medical care) and retirement pensions flow into, and become a crucial economic support …

Mental Health Status And Perceived Barriers To Seeking Treatment In Rural Reserve Component Veterans, Elizabeth A. Bennett, Michael Crabtree, Mary E. Schaffer, Thomas W. Britt

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

National Guard and Reserve (RC) troops (N=617) primarily from the Appalachian Region in Southwestern Pennsylvania who recently returned from deployment in support of current military conflicts responded to a survey that assessed their demographics, mental health symptoms, help-seeking behaviors, barriers for not seeking treatment, deployment history, and stressors. Veterans were classified as rural (N = 334) or non-rural (N = 283). Rural participants reported a significantly greater number of issues with transportation/access in seeking mental health treatment, were more likely to perceive others as worse off as a reason not to seek treatment, had a more negative attitude …

The Library And The Librarian As A Theme In Literature, Teresa Vilariño Picos

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The Library and the Librarian as a Theme in Literature," Teresa Vilariño Picos explores in several languages and genres (literature, cinema, television), the image of the library and the librarian. Vilariño Picos argues that the image of the library and the librarian often refer the reader or viewer to a perception where the space of books represents universal humanity and knowledge despite the often negative view depicted. In Vilariño Picos's discussion particular attention is paid to the works of Elias Canetti, Jorge Luis Borges, Umberto Eco, and David Lodge in literature and Alain Resnais film and Manolo …

Tetraplegia Caused By Critical Illness Polyneuropathy Superimposed On Diabetic Neuropathy: A Casereport, Chia-Chen Li, Shih-Fu Hsieh, Ming-Chuan Lin, Chung-Wei Huang, Yi-Shiung Horng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Objective: To describe a patient with the critical illness polyneuropathy superimposed on diabetic neuropathy and to highlight the importance of early rehabilitation after critical illness. Methods: A 42-year-old man with a previous history of diabetic polyneuropathy developed flaccid tetraplegia with respiratory failure after septic shock due to a liver abscess. This clinical manifestation, combined with the result of an electrodiagnostic study, suggested the acute exacerbation of polyneuropathy. Because a pre-existing polyneuropathy history complicated a differential diagnosis, we performed a comprehensive work-up to rule out other systemic diseases or metabolic disorders that may cause polyneuropathy. Finally, the diagnosis of critical illness …
