An Rf Cmos Implementation Of An Adaptive Filter For Narrow-Band Interferer Suppression In Uwb Systems, Markus Both Dec 2011

An Rf Cmos Implementation Of An Adaptive Filter For Narrow-Band Interferer Suppression In Uwb Systems, Markus Both

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is a new type of technology for wireless communication that is based on the transmission of low power sub-nanosecond pulses. UWB communication utilizes a large bandwidth that overlaps and is coexistent with other wireless communication standards that can be also considered as narrow-band interferers. Because UWB systems are highly susceptible to narrow-band interferers, there is a demand for interferer suppression. An adaptive filter consisting of a two-element diversity receiver that performs minimum mean square error combining (MMSE) by the LMS algorithm is proposed. Thereby the elements of the LMS algorithm as well as the receiver LNA were …

Highly Efficient Maximum Power Point Tracking Using A Quasi-Double-Boost Dc/Dc Converter For Photovoltaic Systems, Christopher J. Lohmeier

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are a great source of renewable energy generation. The biggest problem with solar systems is relatively low efficiency and high cost. This work hopes to alleviate this problem by using novel power electronic converter and control designs. An electronic DC/DC converter, called “Quasi-Double-Boost DC/DC Converter,” is designed for a Solar PV system. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MTTP) algorithm is implemented through this converter. This algorithm allows the PV system to work at its highest efficiency. Different current sensing and sensorless technologies used with the converter for the MPPT algorithm are offered and tested. Design aspects …

Designed Synthesis Of Halogenated Borazine-Linked Polymers And Their Applications In Gas Storage And Separation, Thomas Reich

Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of highly porous organic polymers with predefined porosity has attracted considerable attention due to their potential in a wide range of applications. Of particular interest in porous organic polymers is their potential use in automotive applications as well as separation processes whereby advancements could result in a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and the production of natural gas in a more economically friendly manner. Along these pursuits, seven borazine-linked polymers (BLPs) have been synthesized through the introduction of p-phenylenediamine, 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl)benzene, benzidine, or tetra-(4-aminophenyl)methane with boron tribromide or boron trichloride followed by the thermolysis reaction of the resulting in …

Pyrolysis Oil And Its Applications, Rajesh Gattupalli

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Fuels obtained from biomasses are becoming a valid alternative to the use of fossil fuels, especially in the light of stringent environmental constraints. Fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass produces a renewable liquid fuel called pyrolysis oil that has a variety of applications as a potential replacement for fossil fuels. One aspect of pyrolysis oil that has been addressed to promote its broader use is improving the stability of pyrolysis oil with respect to viscosity increase over time, making long range transportation and storage possible. Other properties of pyrolysis oil present challenges during its use in standard equipment constructed for petroleum …

Pulmonary Diffusional Screening And The Scaling Laws Of Mammalian Metabolic Rates, Chen Hou, Michael Mayo Dec 2011

Pulmonary Diffusional Screening And The Scaling Laws Of Mammalian Metabolic Rates, Chen Hou, Michael Mayo

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Theoretical considerations suggest that the mammalian metabolic rate is linearly proportional to the surface areas of mitochondria, capillary, and alveolar membranes. However, the scaling exponents of these surface areas to the mammals' body mass (approximately 0.9-1) are higher than exponents of the resting metabolic rate (RMR) to body mass (approximately 0.75), although similar to the one of exercise metabolic rate (EMR); the underlying physiological cause of this mismatch remains unclear. The analysis presented here shows that discrepancies between the scaling exponents of RMR and the relevant surface areas may originate from, at least for the system of alveolar membranes in …

Internet Piracy: Is Protecting Intellectual Property Worth Government Censorship?, Grace Espinosa

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Intellectual property law has struggled to keep up with new technologies and the issues posed by new mediums of communication. With the rise of the Internet, digital piracy has led to millions of dollars worth of losses in American intellectual property. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA ") was intended to address some of the problems related to online infringement; however, at the time the DMCA was drafted, the legislature did not foresee that peer-to-peer file sharing software would give millions of users instant illegal access to copyrighted works. In response to lobbying for an expansion of copyright protection, the …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Ecosystem models are important tools for diagnosing the carbon cycle and projecting its behavior across space and time. Despite the fact that ecosystems respond to drivers at multiple time scales, most assessments of model performance do not discriminate different time scales. Spectral methods, such as wavelet analyses, present an alternative approach that enables the identification of the dominant time scales contributing to model performance in the frequency domain. In this study we used wavelet analyses to synthesize the performance of 21 ecosystem models at 9 eddy covariance towers as part of the North American Carbon Program’s site-level intercomparison. This study …

Chilling A Hot Planet: Many Solutions, No Answers, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

If there was a report card on how the world is doing on issues related to climate change, it would read a resounding 'F'. Consider the figures. It took about 12,500 years between the last glacial age and today for global temperatures to rise six degrees Celsius. Yet in this century alone – despite heightened awareness of the need to arrest the ever-increasing levels of greenhouse gas emission – temperatures have risen up to four degrees Celsius.

Rising temperatures and massive environmental catastrophes should rightly bring about greater emphases on climate change issues. Yet, there is much inertia due to disagreements amongst world leaders on emission curbs and their ensuing economic impact. A panel of speakers at the recent Social Sciences and Humanities Seminar on climate change discussed the various approaches taken by governments as such issues feature increasingly not just in political chatter, but also, in security assessment.

A Distributed Approach For Fault Mitigation In Large Scale Distributed Systems, Mina Jung Dec 2011

A Distributed Approach For Fault Mitigation In Large Scale Distributed Systems, Mina Jung

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations

In a large scale real-time distributed system, a large number of components and the time criticality of tasks can contribute to complex situations. Providing predictable and reliable service is a paramount interest in such a system. For example, a single point failure in an electric grid system may lead to a widespread power outage like the Northeast Blackout of 2003. System design and implementation address fault avoidance and mitigation. However, not all faults and failures can be removed during these phases, and therefore run-time fault avoidance and mitigation are needed during the operation. Timing constraints and predictability of the system …
