Controlled Growth Of Two-Dimensional Copper Nanoplates In Graphite Gallery, Xiaobei Bin, Jiazang Chen, Hong Cao
Controlled Growth Of Two-Dimensional Copper Nanoplates In Graphite Gallery, Xiaobei Bin, Jiazang Chen, Hong Cao
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Copper nanoplates embedded in a graphite gallery were obtained by in situ reduction of stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3 CuCl_2-graphite intercalation compound precursors. The characterization results indicated that the morphology of the copper species was that of a 2-dimensional or quasi-2-dimensional nanoplate in the graphite gallery. Interaction between the metallic nanoplates and graphene sheet was also detected. The hexagonal graphene network restricted the crystallization orientation of the copper nanoparticles, and, at the same time, the finite space between the graphene sheets prevented the increase of the thickness. This method would provide a convenient route to synthesize or assemble …
Assimilable Organic Carbon Generation From Algogenic Organic Matter In Drinking Water, Ji-Hoon Kim, Young-Ju Kim, Tahir Imran Qureshi
Assimilable Organic Carbon Generation From Algogenic Organic Matter In Drinking Water, Ji-Hoon Kim, Young-Ju Kim, Tahir Imran Qureshi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A study of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) derived from algogenic organic matter in different drinking water resources was conducted. Seasonal changes in the concentration of AOC at Kamafusa Dam were dependent on the algal cell numbers. Variations in AOC concentrations were found to be more reliant on the AOC-P17 component than the AOC-NOX component. The algal culture experiment showed that extracellular organic matter (EOM) released during the growth of Phormidium tenue in M-11 culture medium led to a significant increase in AOC concentration; however, no significant variations of AOC concentration were observed in CT culture medium containing high amounts of …

Synthesis And Properties Of New Optically Active And Organosoluble Poly(Ester-Imide)S Containing L-Valine Moieties In The Main Chain By Direct Polycondensation Reaction, Khalil Faghihi, Meisam Shabanian, Mohsen Hajibeygi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
New optically active poly(ester-imide)s (PEIs) containing bicyclo[2,2,2]oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic diimide in the main chain were prepared by the reaction of N,N'-(bicyclo[2,2,2]oct-7- ene-2,3,5,6-tetra carboxylic)-bis-L-valine 4 as a diacid monomer with various aromatic diols 5a-g in a system of tosyl chloride (TsCl), pyridine (Py), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The reactions with TsCl were significantly promoted by controlling alcoholysis with diols, in the presence of catalytic amounts of DMF, to give a series of optically active poly(ester-imide)s. The resulting new polymers were obtained in good yields and inherent viscosities, ranging between 0.36 and 0.62 dL g^{-1}, and were characterized with FT-IR and ^1H-NMR spectroscopy, including specific …

The World Health Organization lists tuberculosis among the top 3 leading causes of death from a single infectious agent, and reported cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) are on the rise. In an attempt to improve MDR-TB drug-directed therapy, we synthesized 11 4-substituted piperazine derivatives of 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one pharmacophore by reacting 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one with suitable piperazine derivatives under Mannich reaction conditions. Inhibitory effects of the 11 compounds on Escherichia coli DNA gyrase were evaluated via DNA gyrase supercoiling assay. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the 11 compounds and 41 compounds from our previous studies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37RV were assessed, in vitro, …

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
A 1992 survey of metal concentrations in sediments and clams from the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, was repeated during 2006–7. Concentrations of Cr, Ni, Se and V in sediments were at background values during both surveys with no indication of anthropogenic inputs. Average values for Ag, Cd and Zn in sediments, normalized to Al, were unchanged, but contamination was identified at several locations during both surveys. The proportion of sites with elevated values for sediment Cu, Hg and Pb increased between 1992 and 2006–7 from 22 to 65%, 9 to 35%, and 13 to 39%, respectively, with highest values near …

Distribution Of The Hermit Crabs Clibanarius Vittatus And Pagurus Maclaughlinae In The Northern Indian River Lagoon, Florida: A Reassessment After 30 Years, Christopher J. Kelly, Richard L. Turner
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
The present distribution of two hermit crabs, Clibanarius vittatus and Pagurus maclaughlinae, was assessed for comparison with a study done more than 30 yr ago on decapods of the region. Clibanarius vittatus presently occurs in low or moderate density only at Sebastian Inlet. Retreat of C. vittatus from sites that it formerly occupied is attributed to intolerance of its larvae to low salinities recorded in the lagoon during recent reproductive seasons. Pagurus maclaughlinae remains the most abundant and widespread hermit crab in the lagoon. Its present distribution seems unchanged from the reference study despite prolonged periods, sometimes years, during which …

State Estimation Filtering Algorithms For Vehicle Attitude Determination Using A Dual-Arc Accelerometer Array And 3-Axis Rate Gyroscopes, Aaron Zimmerman
State Estimation Filtering Algorithms For Vehicle Attitude Determination Using A Dual-Arc Accelerometer Array And 3-Axis Rate Gyroscopes, Aaron Zimmerman
Theses
Sensor measurements are corrupted by biases, noise and drift effects and, in order to provide accurate measurements, these errors need to be estimated and, thus, eliminated. The current model used an Extended Kalman filter for the estimation of rate gyroscope measurement errors. This work improves upon that filter by applying a more robust, more accurate and more reliable Unscented Kalman filter. In addition, an algorithm for estimating the accelerometer measurement errors is developed using control theory. Using the attitude estimate from the Unscented Kalman filter, an error signal is formed between that attitude and the attitude estimates from the accelerometer …

High-Strength Selfconsolidating Concrete Girders Subjected To Elevated Compressive Fiber Stresses, Part 2: Structural Behavior, Jared E. Brewe, John J. Myers
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The design of prestressed concrete members is restricted by the requirement that the extreme compressive fiber stress at midspan be less than 60% of the concrete compressive strength at release of prestressing. the purported purpose of this limit is to provide serviceability performance, but it places unnecessary limits on the capability of the materials. for this research program, six prestressed concrete girders were produced with high-strength, self-consolidating concrete and subjected to elevated compressive fiber stress levels ranging from 65% to 84% of initial concrete compressive strength at release of prestressing. Part 1 of this series analyzed time-dependent prestress losses and …

Ip Address Registration Database: Definitions For Access, Security, And Implementation, Lesa Ouellette
Theses
This thesis analyzes the process of IP assignment and internet policing and proves that a national IP address database will allow law enforcement and governmental agencies improvements in real-time, secure access to subscriber identifying information without compromising the security and privacy of internet users. For the last three decades, the process of monitoring access, usage and IP address assignments has fallen on the internet service providers who allow access to the internet through their IP portals. Since they held the door to the internet, there was reasonability in the idea that they should monitor who goes in and out of …

Reaction Rates Of Ozone And Terpenes Adsorbed To Model Indoor Surfaces, M. Springs, J. R. Wells, Glenn Morrison
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reaction rates and reaction probabilities have been quantified on model indoor surfaces for the reaction of ozone with two monoterpenes (Δ3-carene and d-limonene). Molar surface loadings were obtained by performing breakthrough experiments in a plug-flow reactor (PFR) packed with beads of glass, polyvinylchloride or zirconium silicate. Reaction rates and probabilities were determined by equilibrating the PFR with both the terpene and the ozone and measuring the ozone consumption rate. to mimic typical indoor conditions, temperatures of 20, 25, and 30°C were used in both types of experiments along with a relative humidity ranging from 10% to 80%. the molar surface …

Establishing Parameters For Problem Difficulty In Permutation-Based Genetic Algorithms, Adam Nogaj
Theses
This thesis examines the performance of genetic algorithm (GA) crossover techniques within two problems: n-queens with poison (NQWP) and processor scheduling (PS). Each problem was analyzed at sizes of 32, 64, and 128, referring to number of queens to be placed and number of single-time-unit processes to be scheduled, respectively. The specific crossover techniques studied were cycle crossover, order crossover, partially mapped crossover, merging crossover, and one-point, two-point, and uniform signature representation crossover, in addition to various greedy approaches. In conjunction with tests that vary crossover techniques, experimentation was performed to determine what percentage of problem constraints (poisoned squares for …
Cloth Simulation Using Hardware Tessellation, David Huynh
Cloth Simulation Using Hardware Tessellation, David Huynh
Theses
Cloth simulation has long been a topic of interest in computer graphics since the early works of Terzopoulos et al. Over the years many techniques have been developed to simulate cloth. Though the general concern has been on the physical accuracy of the simulation. As the simulation gets closer to computational sciences the complexity also increases which at times may come at the cost of real-time performance. With newer and more powerful graphics hardware coming out each year, researchers are starting to shy away from the traditional CPU implementation and turning towards the GPU to offload work. As the parallel …

Mitigating The Risk Of Social Engineering Attacks, Matthew Spinapolice
Mitigating The Risk Of Social Engineering Attacks, Matthew Spinapolice
Theses
The topic of social engineering is only covered briefly in today's system administration and security coursework. This lack of coverage leaves many Administrators ill-equipped to administer the users of a computer network. In addition to their technical training, administrators need to comprehend the potential severity and likelihood of social engineering attacks. Teaching administrators only to minimize the risk of hacking attempts or computer virus infections does not fully equip them with the knowledge needed to defend their networks. To ensure the safety of their network from social engineering attacks, administrators need to be able to answer three primary questions: * …

Robustness Analysis Of Slow Learning In Iterative Learning Control Systems, John R. Singler, Douglas A. Bristow
Robustness Analysis Of Slow Learning In Iterative Learning Control Systems, John R. Singler, Douglas A. Bristow
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper examines robust stability and robust transient growth in Iterative Learning Control (ILC). It is well known that small perturbations in system dynamics can result in very large transient growth of some ILC systems. Even larger perturbations can result in instability. One ad hoc technique commonly employed to improve robustness is to slow the learning rate by reducing the learning filter gain or lowpass filtering the error signal. Here, pseudospectra analysis is used to analyze the robustness of ILC algorithms with slow learning. It is found that robustness bounds can be increased and transient growth decreased with decreasing learning …

Cellular Network Monitoring System Based On Subscriber Units, Victor Silva
Cellular Network Monitoring System Based On Subscriber Units, Victor Silva
Theses
The normal approach to assess signal quality parameters in a wireless network requires performing what is known as a drive test. A drive test consists on driving a vehicle equipped with a wireless measurement toll box around the area of interest, in order to take measures of several wireless signal parameters. Drive testing is a time consuming activity often affected by external factors such as vehicular traffic congestion and others. The slowness of the process makes this technique impractical when the goal is to measure the impact caused by minor changes on the network; when you need something like a …

The Attitudes Of African American Students Towards The Study Of Foreign Languages And Cultures, Katrina Watterson
The Attitudes Of African American Students Towards The Study Of Foreign Languages And Cultures, Katrina Watterson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the reasons that African American students participate at lower levels in foreign language programs in terms of taking courses and majoring and minoring in foreign languages. The primary foreign language that it explores is Spanish, and its findings suggest that the introduction of the language devoid of the influence of Afro-diasporic linkages to Spanish culture leads to the topic being taught in abstraction, therefore causing a lack of interest among African American students. As this study shows, a teacher's thinking about cultural and racial difference is often intimately woven into their disciplinary training, and as a result, …
Damage Detection And Identification In Fiber Reinforced Plastic Structural Members And Field Bridges Using Acoustic Emission Technique, Archana Nair
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
With the increased use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) based structural systems for rehabilitation of existing and construction of new bridges there is a requirement for identification of critical components of these structural systems and the determination of critical damage thresholds in them. Of the many available non-destructive techniques (NDT), acoustic emission (AE) monitoring had been identified as one of the most popular techniques applicable for damage discrimination in composites. The current study aimed at using patterns in AE data for the identification of damage modes exhibited by composite structural systems. The extensive experimental program involved testing of two structural …
