Lipid Emulsion Therapy As Treatment For Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity, Nina R. Wentz Dec 2011

Lipid Emulsion Therapy As Treatment For Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity, Nina R. Wentz

Theses and Dissertations

Local anesthetic systemic toxicity, due to misapplication of local anesthetic in an otherwise routine procedure, can result in deleterious effects. Although improved regional anesthesia techniques, effective test-dosing, and availability of less toxic local anesthetics have resulted in a decline in local anesthetic toxicity rates, adverse events do occur. A comprehensive review of literature was conducted and current research findings and documented case studies were systematically reviewed. The "lipid sink" phenomenon is the most widely accepted theoretical framework surrounding intravenous lipid emulsion treatment for local anesthetic induced cardiovascular collapse (Rothschild, Bern, Oswald, & Weinberg, 2010). Current evidence suggests that immediate infusion …

Toxic Marine Microalgae And Shellfish Poisoning In The British Isles: History, Review Of Epidemiology, And Future Implications, Sl Hinder, Gc Hays, Cj Brooks, Ap Davies, Et Al Dec 2011

Toxic Marine Microalgae And Shellfish Poisoning In The British Isles: History, Review Of Epidemiology, And Future Implications, Sl Hinder, Gc Hays, Cj Brooks, Ap Davies, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The relationship between toxic marine microalgae species and climate change has become a high profile and well discussed topic in recent years, with research focusing on the possible future impacts of changing hydrological conditions on Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) species around the world. However, there is very little literature concerning the epidemiology of these species on marine organisms and human health. Here, we examine the current state of toxic microalgae species around the UK, in two ways: first we describe the key toxic syndromes and gather together the disparate reported data on their epidemiology from UK records and monitoring procedures. …

Dove Density In The Rio Grande Delta: 2007-2008, Michael F. Small, Margaret L. Collins, John T. Baccus, Jared B. Timmons Dec 2011

Dove Density In The Rio Grande Delta: 2007-2008, Michael F. Small, Margaret L. Collins, John T. Baccus, Jared B. Timmons

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

We used a grid sampling method to estimate Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) and White-winged Dove (Z. asiatica) densities in south Texas via distance sampling. We sampled over summers in 2007 and 2008 and calculated mean estimated density across years as well. Time (between years) did not affect density estimates for Mourning Doves but was significantly different for White-winged Doves. Species’ distribution and a separate banding study suggest a possible reason for the difference between years in White-winged Dove density estimates.

Habitat Use By Great-Tailed Grackles (Quiscalus Mexicanus) In Urban And Peri-Urban Habitats Of San Marcos, Hays County, Texas, Corey M. King, Thomas R. Simpson, John T. Baccus, M. Clay Green

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Great-tailed Grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus) are habitat generalists occupying a wide variety of environments except dense forests and prairies lacking nearby water sources. Golf courses, campuses, lawns, parks, and avenue rights-of-way are inhabited in urban and suburban areas. However, examination of seasonal use of habitats in urban environments is limited. We documented seasonal use of urban and peri-urban habitats in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas. We compared habitat use by program Presence to apply the best fit model explaining occupancy within habitats. Principal components analysis suggested differences in woody vegetation among study sites. The best fit model incorporated occupancy, colonization, and …

Mechanics Of Interaction, Ryota Takemura Dec 2011

Mechanics Of Interaction, Ryota Takemura

Theses

My work focuses on the senses that we take for granted when we experience art. We often disregard how our bodies work in relation to living our daily lives. In my piece, the Mechanics of Interaction, I highlight the experience of intertwined senses, in particular sight, touch, and sound. My thesis sculpture, the Mechanics of Interaction, is based on an attempt to avoid a purely visual experience of art. I try to redirect the audience away from the hierarchy of senses where sight is privileged. Many artworks tend to accentuate the combination of vision and thought as an "expression." Sight …

An Emptying Village: Transformations In Architecture And Spatial Organization At Streamstown Village, Co. Galway, Meagan K. Conway

Graduate Masters Theses

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Ireland was a country of instability. The population rose rapidly, and traditional farming practices shifted to accommodate the rapidly changing population in addition to incorporating and almost entirely depending on a new crop, the potato. A spattering of famine years culminating in the Great Famine of 1847-1850 created an unstable environment for rural Irish farmers and factored into massive depopulation of the western counties. Abandonment of the western counties created dozens of empty villages across the landscape, the majority of which are comprised of stone structures located in farmland and in varying degrees of …

High-Resolution Study Of Layering Within The Percolation And Soaked Facies Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Joel Brown, Joel T. Harper, W. Tad Pfeffer, Neil Humphrey, John H. Bradford

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Within the percolation and soaked facies of the Greenland ice sheet, the relationship between radar-derived internal reflection horizons and the layered structure of the firm column is unclear. We conducted two small-scale ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys in conjunction with 10 m firm cores that we colleced within the percolation and soaked facies of the Greenland ice sheet. The two surveys were separated by the distance of about 50 km and about 340 m of elevation leading to about 40 days of difference in the duration of average annual melt. At the higher site (about 1997 ma.s.l.), which receives less melt, …

Using A Micro-Integrator To Eliminate The Numerical Butterfly Effect In Non-Linear Chaotic Partial Differential Equations, Joshua Jemegbe Dec 2011

Using A Micro-Integrator To Eliminate The Numerical Butterfly Effect In Non-Linear Chaotic Partial Differential Equations, Joshua Jemegbe

Electrical Engineering Theses

Chaos theory is a relatively new scientific paradigm for the analysis, simulation and prediction of non-linear phenomena whose initial conditions determine the behavior of their entire time series representation. It finds many applications in mathematics, science, and engineering. These include, but are not limited, to data encryption and decryption, designing secure communication systems, predicting weather patterns, noise fluctuations on data lines, understanding turbulence in fluid flow, and analyzing quantum wells. Systems that exhibit chaos are called chaotic systems. In computing solutions to nonlinear chaotic partial differential equation sets, slight deviations in step size could lead to completely diverging trajectories as …

Compressive Sensing For Speech Signals In Mobile Systems, Sabir Ahmed Dec 2011

Compressive Sensing For Speech Signals In Mobile Systems, Sabir Ahmed

Electrical Engineering Theses

Compressive sensing is an emerging and revolutionary technology that strongly relies on the sparsity of the signal. In compressive sensing the signal is sparsely compressively sampled by taking a small number of random projections of the signal, which contain most of the salient information. Compressive sensing has been previously applied in areas like: image processing, radar systems and sonar systems. This research work will discuss the potential implementation of compressive sensing in mobile communication systems and how it will influence their data rates. In a typical mobile communication system, the signal of interest is sampled at least at the Nyquist …

Abiotic Stress Responses In Photosynthetic Organisms, Joseph Msanne Dec 2011

Abiotic Stress Responses In Photosynthetic Organisms, Joseph Msanne

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Cellular and molecular aspects of abiotic stress responses in Arabidopsis thaliana subjected to cold, drought, and high salinity and in two photosynthetic green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Coccomyxa sp. C-169, subjected to nitrogen deprivation were investigated. Cold, drought, and high salinity can negatively affect plant growth and crop production. The first research aimed at determining the physiological functions of the stress-responsive Arabidopsis thaliana RD29A and RD29B genes. Cold, drought, and salt induced both genes; the promoter of RD29Awas found to be more responsive to drought and cold stresses, whereas the promoter of RD29B was highly responsive to salt stress. …
