Leveling Localism And Racial Inequality Through The No Child Left Behind Public Choice Provision, Erika K. Wilson Jan 2011

Leveling Localism And Racial Inequality Through The No Child Left Behind Public Choice Provision, Erika K. Wilson

Faculty Publications

While much attention is paid to issues of segregation and inequality in education, little attention is paid to the role that school district boundary lines play in creating segregation and inequality in education. Living on one side of a school district boundary line rather than another can mean the difference between being able to attend a high achieving resource enriched school or having to attend a low achieving, resource deprived school. Nevertheless, the federal judiciary--the institution looked upon to remedy issues of school segregation and inequality--is unable to adequately remedy segregation and inequality between school districts because it evidences a …

Veterans In Higher Education: What Every Adviser May Want To Know, Jose Coll, Hans Oh, Craig Joyce, Lazara C. Coll

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the current influx of soldiers returning from war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the newly revised Post-9/11 GI Bill affords veterans the opportunity to attend state colleges free of charge, which may result in a dramatic increase in enrollment of veterans in colleges across the country. However, most learning institutions are ill-equipped to accommodate the special needs of those veteran students who may experience adjustment problems when reintegrating into a civilian setting. Veterans return with a newly acquired value system shaped by military service that can create dissonance when interacting with non-military people. Moreover, veterans may suffer from complex physical …

Effects Of Nitrogen And Harvesting Time On Chemical Composition Of Biomass Of Sudan Grass, Fodder Sorghum, And Their Hybrid, Dorde Glamoclija, Snezana Jankovic, Sveto Rakic, Radojka Maletic, Jela Ikanovic, Zeljko Lakic

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The subject of this study is 2-year variability research (2007 and 2008) of the chemical composition of naturally dried biomass samples of 3 different sorghum species, which are widely used in the southeast Balkans. Samples of Sudan grass Zora, fodder sorghum NS-Dzin, and their hybrid Siloking were examined based on the quantity of used nitrogen and the harvest time. Plants were grown in the experimental field of Radmilovac (property of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade) in a randomized block, split-split plot design with 3 replications for 2 years. Naturally dried biomass with the highest amount of total proteins was …

Interactions Between Rural Migration And Land Use Change In The Forest Villages In The Gökçay Watershed, Ceyhun Göl, Sezgi̇n Özden, Hüseyi̇n Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was carried out to analyze the spatial and temporal pattern of land use/land cover change (from 1955 to 2008) and migration movement (from 1935 to 2007) in the Gökçay River Watershed. To assess this period, the necessary data were obtained from forest stand maps (1955 and 2008) and evaluated by using Geographic Information Systems. Maps of the study area dated 1955 and 2008 have been analyzed, and land use type and change on the land pattern have been investigated. The data reveal that the percentage of forest area, which was 47% in 1955, rose to 50% in 2008; …

Isolation And Characterization Of Native Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolates From Syrian Soil And Testing Of Their Insecticidal Activities Against Some Insect Pests, Hassan Ammouneh, Muhand Harba, Emad Idris, Hayat Makee

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Bacillus thuringiensis was detected in 12.5% of soil samples collected from different regions in Syria and 25 B. thuringiensis isolates were found to be highly toxic to larvae of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, Phthorimaea operculella Zeller, and Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera), but not to the larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera). Light microscopy investigation showed the presence of bipyramidal and cuboidal parasporal bodies produced by these isolates. The existence of different cry genes in the tested isolates was studied using a PCR strategy with a set of general primers recognizing some of the cry genes reported in the relevant literature. Primers corresponding …
