Political Competition, Relative Deprivation, And Perceived Threat: A Research Note On Anti- Christian Violence In India, Chad Bauman, Tamara Leech Dec 2011

Political Competition, Relative Deprivation, And Perceived Threat: A Research Note On Anti- Christian Violence In India, Chad Bauman, Tamara Leech

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

A preliminary subnational statistical analysis of violence against Christians in contemporary India, this article suggests that whereas the data provide very little support for simple, demographic explanations of this violence, they do more robustly support theories emphasizing the relative status of ethnic and religious minorities (vis-à-vis majorities) and the perception, among Hindus, that Christians (and other minorities) represent a threat to their numerical, political and economic strength.

The Zfx Gene Is Expressed In Human Gliomas And Is Important In The Proliferation And Apoptosis Of The Human Malignant Glioma Cell Line U251, Youxin Zhou, Zuopeng Su, Yulun Huang, Ting Sun, Sansong Chen, Tingfeng Wu, Guilin Chen, Xueshun Xie, Bin Li, Ziwei Du

Faculty Publications

Background: Zfx is a zinc finger protein of the Zfy family, whose members are highly conserved in vertebrates. Zfx is a shared transcriptional regulator of both embryonic stem cells (ESC) and hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), which suggests a common genetic basis of self-renewal in embryonic and adult stem cells. The level of Zfx expression correlates with aggressiveness and severity in many cancer types, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia. However, the importance of Zfx in human glioma is largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the role of Zfx in human glioma. Methods. We detected expression levels of …

Scholarly Inbreeding In Latin American Academically Managed Journals, Erwin Krauskopf Dec 2011

Scholarly Inbreeding In Latin American Academically Managed Journals, Erwin Krauskopf

Higher Learning Research Communications

From a bibliometric perspective, scholarly inbreeding has been identified in journals through the excessive use of both author and journal self-citations. However, editorial bias toward researchers from the same institution as the editorial management team has seldom been considered. According to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, this occurs when a journal publishes more than 20% of documents authored by researchers affiliated with the same institution as the editorial management team. The purpose of this study is to establish the extent to which 81 Latin American journals managed by universities publish intramural documents (defined as those published by its …

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Context and Objectives: In July 2009, WHO and partners were notified of a large outbreak of unknown illness, including deaths, among African Union (AU) soldiers in Mogadishu. Illnesses were characterized by peripheral edema, dyspnea, palpitations, and fever. Our objectives were to determine the cause of the outbreak, and to design and recommend control strategies.

Design, Setting, and Participants: The illness was defined as acute onset of lower limb edema, with dyspnea, chest pain, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or headache. Investigations in Nairobi and Mogadishu included clinical, epidemiologic, environmental, and laboratory studies. A case-control study was performed to identify risk …

Regulation Of Corporations. Initiative Constitutional Amendment. Dec 2011

Regulation Of Corporations. Initiative Constitutional Amendment.

Initiatives

Substantially replaces current California law governing corporations, to allow maximum authority over corporations permitted by federal constitution. Hyperspectral Data Processing In A High Performance Computing Environment: A Parallel Best Band Selection Algorithm, Stefan Robila, Gerald Busardo Dec 2011

Hyperspectral Data Processing In A High Performance Computing Environment: A Parallel Best Band Selection Algorithm, Stefan Robila, Gerald Busardo

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Hyperspectral data are characterized by a richness of information unique among various visual representations of a scene by representing the information in a collection of grayscale images with each image corresponding to a narrow interval in the electromagnetic spectrum. Such detail allows for precise identification of materials in the scene and promises to support advances in imaging beyond the visible range. However, hyperspectral data are considerably large and cumbersome to process and efficient computing solutions based on high performance computing are needed. In this paper we first provide an overview of hyperspectral data and the current state of the art …
