How Marriage Became Optional: Cohabitation, Gender, And The Emerging Functional Norms, J. Herbie Difonzo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In 1960, two-thirds (68%) of all Americans in their twenties were married. But by 2008, just over one-quarter of twenty-somethings (26%) were wed. According to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, married-couple family households constituted only 49.7% of all households in 2009. The Census Bureau reported in 2009 that 96.6 million Americans eighteen and older were unmarried, a group comprising 43% of all U.S. residents eighteen and older. Children’s living arrangements have also undergone substantial change. In the past generation, the percentage of children in the United States who live with two married parents has markedly declined. Although our culture …

Ab Initio Protein Structure Prediction Algorithms, Maciej Kicinski Apr 2011

Ab Initio Protein Structure Prediction Algorithms, Maciej Kicinski

Master's Projects

Genes that encode novel proteins are constantly being discovered and added to databases, but the speed with which their structures are being determined is not keeping up with this rate of discovery. Currently, homology and threading methods perform the best for protein structure prediction, but they are not appropriate to use for all proteins. Still, the best way to determine a protein's structure is through biological experimentation. This research looks into possible methods and relations that pertain to ab initio protein structure prediction. The study includes the use of positional and transitional probabilities of amino acids obtained from a non-redundant …

A Habitat And Abundance Study Of Octopus Cyanea In Southwest Madagascar, Michael Belazis Apr 2011

A Habitat And Abundance Study Of Octopus Cyanea In Southwest Madagascar, Michael Belazis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The increased demand for marine products has fueled a worldwide overexpansion of the fishing industry. Furthermore, the shift of lower-income countries, like Madagascar, from subsistence to market-based cash economies has led to increased fishing pressures on marine resources. Recent commercialization of fisheries in Southwest Madagascar has caused an over-exploitation of octopus in the Toliara region. In an effort to create sustainable octopus fisheries, Blue Ventures, a UK-based NGO, created the world’s first community run Marine Protected Area (MPA) for octopus near Andavadoaka called Velondriake.

Here, the results of an Octopus cyanea habitat study performed near Beheloke, a fishing village on …

Computational Genomic Signatures And Metagenomics, Ozkan U. Nalbantoglu Apr 2011

Computational Genomic Signatures And Metagenomics, Ozkan U. Nalbantoglu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mathematical characterizations of biological sequences form one of the main elements of bioinformatics. In this work, a class of DNA sequence characterization, namely computational genomics signatures, which capture global features of these sequences is used to address emerging computational biology challenges. Because of the species specificity and pervasiveness of genome signatures, it is possible to use these signatures to characterize and identify a genome or a taxonomic unit using a short genome fragment from that source. However, the identification accuracy is generally poor when the sequence model and the sequence distance measure are not selected carefully. We show that the …

Computational Complexity Of Approximate And Precise Data With Constraint Automaton, Dipty Singh Apr 2011

Computational Complexity Of Approximate And Precise Data With Constraint Automaton, Dipty Singh

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The DNA molecules packaged in structures called chromosomes within the cells of living organisms encode hereditary information that is passed on to their offspring. Using transcription and translation, the genes within these DNA molecules help in protein synthesis. Thus chromosomal DNA serves as a blueprint for the chemical processes of life.

In order to analyze a DNA sequence by currently available technology, we have to cut it into small fragments, e.g. by using restriction enzymes. The application of different restriction enzymes to the multiple copies of the same DNA sequence generates many overlapping fragments. In order to construct the original …

Short-Term Study Abroad: An Exploratory View Of Business Student Outcomes, Susan Carley, Randy Stuart, M. P. Daily Apr 2011

Short-Term Study Abroad: An Exploratory View Of Business Student Outcomes, Susan Carley, Randy Stuart, M. P. Daily

Faculty Articles

Acknowledging the importance of fostering global perspectives in students, business educators stress the role that international study plays in increasing interpersonal skills, and broadening knowledge of global business practices. Traditionally offered as semester- or year-long programs, today's programs are more often short-term in nature, raising questions about student outcomes of abbreviated tours. This longitudinal study of students who participated over a nine-year period examines the benefits and limitations of short-term tours. Results suggest that schools of business give careful consideration to desired student outcomes, learning objectives and how these might best be accomplished if delivered in a compressed time frame.

Patron Driven Acquisition Of Publisher-Hosted Content: Bypassing Drm, Jason S. Price Apr 2011

Patron Driven Acquisition Of Publisher-Hosted Content: Bypassing Drm, Jason S. Price

Library Staff Publications and Research

Academic library patron driven acquisition (PDA) of ebooks on aggregator platforms is gaining steam. Although there are many advantages to this model, aggregated ebook content is still hampered by digital rights management (DRM). Publisher hosted ebooks are often DRM free, providing user-friendly access to ebook chapters that emulates ejournal article access. Librarians and libraries should build win-win-win partnerships with aggregators and publishers that facilitate centralized PDA on aggregator platforms which results in library ownership of purchased books on DRM-free publisher platforms. Ultimately, a simpler solution would be to reduce the restrictiveness of digital rights management on aggregator-hosted content, which might …

Multilocus And Parametric Analyses Of The Evolutionary History Of The Amazonian Peacock Cichlids, The Genus Cichla (Teleostei: Cichlidae), Stuart Clayton Willis Apr 2011

Multilocus And Parametric Analyses Of The Evolutionary History Of The Amazonian Peacock Cichlids, The Genus Cichla (Teleostei: Cichlidae), Stuart Clayton Willis

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Accurate knowledge of species boundaries and species phylogeny are fundamental to testing hypotheses of recent evolutionary processes, but the estimation of these partitions is challenging due both to inherent confusion about what is being estimated as well as the data available to estimate them. Using multilocus data from mtDNA, microsatellites, and nuclear locus sequences of over 1100 individuals, we delimited eight separately evolving species of Cichla rather than the 15 described. Among species we found evidence of rare but widespread introgressive hybridization, while within these species we observed evidence of long-term gene exchange and constrained evolutionary trajectories. In most cases …

Truncated Dutpase Of Dictyostelium Discoideum Is Active And Likely To Form Trimers, Phuoc V. Nguyen Apr 2011

Truncated Dutpase Of Dictyostelium Discoideum Is Active And Likely To Form Trimers, Phuoc V. Nguyen

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Enzymes mediating nucleotide metabolism are potential chemotherapy targets of tumor cells.  Deoxyuridine triphosphatase (dUTPase) hydrolyzes dUTP into dUMP and pyrophosphate, playing a crucial role in limiting the misincorporation of uracil into DNA.  Uracil incorporated into DNA is subjected to excision, but repeated excision repair leads to DNA strand breaks and cell death.  Most dUTPases are homotrimers having three active sites with each active site consisting of motif III of the first subunit, motifs I, II, and IV from the second subunit and motif V from the third subunit.  Because the cell biology of the eukaryote Dictyostelium discoideum parallels that of …

Human Papillomavirus Genotype Concordance Within Zambian Couples, Kgomotso Makhaola

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is strongly associated with the development of cervical cancer, and has also been identified in other anogenital cancers such as penile, oral, and anal cancers. In regions like Sub Saharan Africa where the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is high,   increased rates of HPV infections have also been observed, however the effect of HIV/AIDS on the transmission of HPV is not yet well understood.  In this study specimens for HIV, HPV testing and pathology were collected from male participants and their female partners at a Urology department in Lusaka University Teaching Hospital, Zambia. Seventy four samples were collected but …

Modulation Of Glutamate-Mediated Neuronal Cell Death By Neurosteroids, Benjamin J. Phelps Apr 2011

Modulation Of Glutamate-Mediated Neuronal Cell Death By Neurosteroids, Benjamin J. Phelps

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and permanent disability in the United States. Approximately 1.7 million cases of TBI are reported annually. After an injury to the head, excessive glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter, is released into the extracellular fluid resulting in the excitotoxic death of neuronal tissue. Recent studies have suggested neurosteroids, may serve as an effective means by which to modulate excitotoxicity via the excitatory neurotransmitter alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA). Using mixed astrocyte-neuronal cell cultures (14-16 DIV) exposed to increasing concentrations of AMPA as the model for TBI, the experiments examined the effect of the neurosteroids, …

White And Everything Else: Promotion The 1924 Virginia Racial Integrity Act, J. Casey Gilliam Apr 2011

White And Everything Else: Promotion The 1924 Virginia Racial Integrity Act, J. Casey Gilliam

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

During the early twentieth century, a movement influenced by the tenets of Social Darwinism took root in the United States. Members of the movement used its principles to “improve the American race” through selective breeding. The leaders of the movement adopted the name eugenics and the participants worked at strengthening genetics in two major ways: the sterilization of persons with so-called genetic defects and an effort to eliminate miscegenation. The Commonwealth of Virginia pursued both aspects of eugenics with great fervor. Under the leadership of Dr. Walter Ashby Plecker, Virginia took a radical stance against racial amalgamation through legislation defining …

Fortuity And Forensic Familial Identification, Natalie Ram Apr 2011

Fortuity And Forensic Familial Identification, Natalie Ram

All Faculty Scholarship

On July 7, 2010, Los Angeles police announced the arrest of a suspect in the Grim Sleeper murders, so called because of a decade-long hiatus in killings. The break in the case came when California searched its state DNA database for a genetic profile similar, but not identical, to the killer’s. DNA is inherited in specific and predictable ways, so a source-excluding partial match might indicate that a close genetic relative of the matching offender was the Grim Sleeper. California’s apparent success in this case has intensified interest in policymaking for source-excluding partial matching. To date, however, little information about …

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Non-toxic biosensors are encountering an increase in attention for use in understanding the fate of cells and as a diagnostic tool. Development and incorporation of suitable fluorophores into biological molecules is the key for monitoring proteins in vivo research. This study investigated the enhanced emission of Eu (III) and Tb (III) upon binding to the four DNA bases and their respective nucleotides, found the best ratio for effective energy transfer, and developing nanoparticles to deliver the biosensor into the cells.

It is well known that Eu (III) and Tb (III) exhibit very distinctive photo-characteristics. The luminescence of these two lanthanides …

Teaching Teachers About Emotion Regulation In The Classroom, Leanne Fried Apr 2011

Teaching Teachers About Emotion Regulation In The Classroom, Leanne Fried

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Emotions affect, and are intertwined with, many of the

cognitive processes of learning and also classroom motivation and

social interaction. There are often times within daily classroom life that

students and teachers are required to, or feel compelled to, regulate

their emotions. Limited research has shown that particular aspects of

classroom environments can enhance emotion regulation strategy

development. In addition, research indicates that some emotion

regulation strategies are more effective than others, with antecedent

strategies appearing favourable. Using a self-regulation perspective,

this article takes a broad look at emotion regulation in the classroom

through a review of relevant research, including …

Mudslinging On The Missouri: Can Endangered Species Survive The Clean Water Act?, Sandra B. Zellmer Apr 2011

Mudslinging On The Missouri: Can Endangered Species Survive The Clean Water Act?, Sandra B. Zellmer

Faculty Law Review Articles

Water quality regulations typically focus on chemical and bacterial pollutants, such as pesticides, detergents, industrial wastes, and sewage. Far less attention has been paid to the flow and function of sediments, known to most of us as mud. Sediments, however, are just as important to the ecological integrity of many rivers as the quality and quantity of the water itself. On big inland rivers like the Missouri, Mississippi, and Colorado Rivers, sediments are essential to the formation of sandbars, islands, oxbows, and floodplains, which in turn provide habitat for native fish, wildlife, and invertebrate species. Also, sediments carried by the …

Environmental Impact Analysis Of Alternative Pallet Management Systems, Ainoa Mazeika Bilbao Apr 2011

Environmental Impact Analysis Of Alternative Pallet Management Systems, Ainoa Mazeika Bilbao

Theses

Pallets, the most common unit-load platform, allow the transportation of goods in an efficient and reliable way. Every year, 700 million new pallets are manufactured and become part of the approximately 2 billion pallets that are in circulation in the U.S. The total life-cycle environmental impact of pallets depends on materials, manufacturing, handling processes, and the disposal practice (end-of-life). Plastic pallets can be lighter and might last longer but their manufacturing processes are energy intensive and could contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. On the other hand, wooden pallets can be cheaper and easily repaired but present a shorter …

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko Apr 2011

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The Community Impact Scale was developed by Zhang et al. (1996) to measure essential value dimensions of professional sports in the community. The original scale includes 45 items under eight factors (Community Solidarity, Public Behavior, Social Equity, Pastime Ecstasy, Health Awareness, Individual Quality, Excellence Pursuit, and Business Opportunity). To further ensure its usefulness for theoretical and practical applications, this study re-examined measurement properties of the scale through conducting a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Research participants (N = 349) were residents of three major metropolitan areas, who responded to a survey in various community settings. With some modifications and eliminations of …

Calculation Of The Electronic And Optical Properties Of Nanoscale Systems, Barry Haycock Apr 2011

Calculation Of The Electronic And Optical Properties Of Nanoscale Systems, Barry Haycock

Doctoral

At the nanometer length scale, the size of surface features in crystalline semiconductor systems is of the same order as the electron wavelength. This can result in unusual behaviour in the systems electronic, magnetic and optical properties due to electron confinement effects. Such effects can have practical and commercial applications and are currently the subject of considerable study in the disciplines of theoretical, computational and materials technology within nanoscience. This thesis uses molecular dynamics computational methods to examine such effects in the electronic structure of semiconductor-based crystalline systems. Three unique surfaces were studied in detail - the SiC(111) surface, the …
