Applications Of Hidden Markov Models In Microarray Gene Expression Data, Huimin Geng, Xutao Deng, Hesham Ali Apr 2011

Applications Of Hidden Markov Models In Microarray Gene Expression Data, Huimin Geng, Xutao Deng, Hesham Ali

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are well developed statistical models to capture hidden information from observable sequential symbols. They were first used in speech recognition in 1970s and have been successfully applied to the analysis of biological sequences since late 1980s as in finding protein secondary structure, CpG islands and families of related DNA or protein sequences [1]. In a HMM, the system being modeled is assumed to be a Markov process with unknown parameters, and the challenge is to determine the hidden parameters from the observable parameters. In this chapter, we described two applications using HMMs to predict gene functions …

“That I Should Always Listen To My Body And Love It”: Finding The Mind-Body Connection In Nineteenth- And Twentieth-Century Slave Texts, Emily Stuart Watkins

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the presence of the movement theories of Irmgard Bartenieff, Peggy Hackney, and Rudolf Von Laban in the following texts: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave. Written by Himself (1845), The History of Mary Prince: A West Indian Slave (1831), Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself, Linda Brent (1861), Sherley Anne Williams’s Dessa Rose (1986) and Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987). The terms and phrases of movement theory will be introduced to the contemporary critical discussion already surrounding the texts, both furthering and challenging existing arguments.

An Approach Integrating Deterrence And Rational Choice Theory, Bradley Rankin Poole Apr 2011

An Approach Integrating Deterrence And Rational Choice Theory, Bradley Rankin Poole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study used an integrative theoretical approach. Criminological theories (deterrence and rational choice) were utilized in the theoretical framework for this study. A massive literature review was included in this study to help connect the theories being integrated. In the fall of 2010, approximately 505 students from the University of Memphis were used as the unit of analysis to examine their perceptions about offending, specifically, illegal parking. The respondents were all given a questionnaire that was used to measure two essential components of deterrence theory: certainty and severity of punishment. The questionnaire also asked the respondents about their perceptions of …

Models For Unsupervised Learning, Annita Thornton Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Learning is a feature of living organisms which is crucial in the process of adaptation. It is understood that a stimulus triggers a chain of neurophysiological reactions in an organism, and as a consequence we say that the organism is learning from that initial exposure. Several researchers have dealt with understanding and modeling learning through mathematical systems. Due to the complexity of the brain, scholars reduced the problem to a simpler mechanism consisting of neurons, which are processing additive units, interconnected with pathways, called synapses. A primary goal was to derive a system of equations that captures the changes synaptic …

Investigation Of The Chemical Causes Of Variations In The Infrared Reflectance Spectrum Of Chert, Emily Rebecca Hassler Apr 2011

Investigation Of The Chemical Causes Of Variations In The Infrared Reflectance Spectrum Of Chert, Emily Rebecca Hassler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this project, differences in the reflectance infrared spectra of chert from ten different localities are investigated using reflectance infrared microspectroscopy (RIRMS). Several other techniques including X-ray diffraction, petrographic analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and transmission infrared spectroscopy, were used to assist in the identification of trace minerals existing in each chert. Spectral manipulation (including subtraction and differentiation) appear to allow the identification of trace minerals in the chert reflectance infrared spectra. Two statistical analyses (correlation and a ratio analysis) were used to evaluate whether RIRMS could discriminate between visually similar chert types and to determine the extent of intrasample …

A Study On The Use Of Double Helix Point Spread Functions In 3d Fluorescence Microscopy, Sreya Ghosh Apr 2011

A Study On The Use Of Double Helix Point Spread Functions In 3d Fluorescence Microscopy, Sreya Ghosh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Noninvasive three-dimensional (3D) imaging of thick samples in fluorescence microscopy is traditionally achieved via the method of optical sectioning where multiple two-dimensional images of an object acquired while focusing at different depths within the object. Defocus, spherical aberrations (SA) and photo bleaching are known to affect the accuracy achieved in 3D images. Double-Helix point spread functions (DH-PSF), the result of PSF engineering, have been used for super localization of point sources in 3D samples. The unique DH-PSF design features 2 dominant lobes in the image plane which appear to rotate as the axial (z) position of a point light source …

Gender Differences In Career Satisfaction Among Postsecondary Faculty In Stem Disciplines, Cynthia L. Martin Apr 2011

Gender Differences In Career Satisfaction Among Postsecondary Faculty In Stem Disciplines, Cynthia L. Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While years of effort to attract more women into higher education careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (collectively known as STEM disciplines) has shown some success, retaining women faculty once they are hired has been much less successful. Their retention is essential in order to maintain diversity among faculty. Understanding the complex factors affecting faculty career satisfaction and, ultimately, their retention at a particular institution and in higher education is needed to guide policies and practices as academic instituions strive to retain highly qualified professors and maintain diversity at all ranks. This study explored salient factors related to faculty …

Against Normative Nationalism, Ashish George Apr 2011

Against Normative Nationalism, Ashish George

Theses

Normative nationalism is the view that national boundaries represent more than an accumulation of tradition and history. Borders are morally significant insofar as the communities they create may appropriately be construed as composed of individuals with particular obligations to one another that they do not have to people outside the communities. I reject normative nationalism in this paper and seek to highlight the defects in criticisms of cosmopolitanism that presume or defend the legitimacy of normative nationalism. I utilize a distinction between demands of activity and demands of justification to point to some flaws in the normative nationalist framework preferred …

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is especially adept at colonizing the airways of individuals afflicted with the autosomal recessive disease cystic fibrosis (CF). CF patients suffer from chronic airway inflammation, which contributes to lung deterioration. Once established in the airways, P. aeruginosa continuously adapts to the changing environment, in part through acquisition of beneficial mutations via a process termed pathoadaptation. MutS and DinB are proposed to play opposing roles in P. aeruginosa pathoadaptation: MutS acts in replication-coupled mismatch repair, which acts to limit spontaneous mutations; in contrast, DinB (DNA polymerase IV) catalyzes error-prone bypass of DNA lesions, contributing to mutations. As part of …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND: Rescuing amphibian diversity is an achievable conservation challenge. Disease mitigation is one essential component of population management. Here we assess existing disease mitigation strategies, some in early experimental stages, which focus on the globally emerging chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. We discuss the precedent for each strategy in systems ranging from agriculture to human medicine, and the outlook for each strategy in terms of research needs and long-term potential. RESULTS: We find that the effects of exposure to Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis occur on a spectrum from transient commensal to lethal pathogen. Management priorities are divided between (1) halting pathogen spread and …
