Vertex Centralities In Input-Output Networks Reveal The Structure Of Modern Economies, Florian Blochl, Fabian J. Theis, Fernando Vega-Redondo, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

Input-output tables describe the flows of goods and services between the sectors of an economy. These tables can be interpreted as weighted directed networks. At the usual level of aggregation, they contain nodes with strong self-loops and are almost completely connected. We derive two measures of node centrality that are well suited for such networks. Both are based on random walks and have interpretations as the propagation of supply shocks through the economy. Random walk centrality reveals the vertices most immediately affected by a shock. Counting betweenness identifies the nodes where a shock lingers longest. The two measures differ in …

A New Species Of Leucothoid Amphipod, Anamixis Bananarama, Sp. N., From Shallow Coral Reefs In French Polynesia (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Leucothoidae), James Darwin Thomas, Traudl Krapp-Shickel Apr 2011

A New Species Of Leucothoid Amphipod, Anamixis Bananarama, Sp. N., From Shallow Coral Reefs In French Polynesia (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Leucothoidae), James Darwin Thomas, Traudl Krapp-Shickel

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Both leucomorph and anamorph developmental stages of Anamixis bananarama sp. n., are illustrated and described from shallow back reef environments of Moorea, French Polynesia. Distinguished by vestigial fi rst gnathopods that persist in post-transformational adult males, this is the second species in the genus to exhibit this unusual character. In other features such as coxae and second gnathopods A. bananarama sp. n. resembles other Pacific Plate endemics of Anamixis known from the region. Specific host association is not documented but suspected to be small calcareous asconoid sponges associated with coral rubble.

Sulfatide Is Required For Organization Of The Paranode In The Myelinated Axon In The Peripheral Nervous System, Eva Kwong Apr 2011

Sulfatide Is Required For Organization Of The Paranode In The Myelinated Axon In The Peripheral Nervous System, Eva Kwong

Theses and Dissertations

Myelin facilitates the timely, efficient conduction of action potentials along axons. Made by Schwann cells (SCs) in the PNS, myelin is unique in that it is composed of a high percentage of lipids, particularly galactolipids. Sulfatide, one such galactolipid, is made by cerebroside sulfotransferase (CST) and has been shown to play a role in organizing paranodal domains in myelinated axons. However less is known regarding the involvement of sulfatide in the establishment and maintenance of the node, of particular interest as it is responsible for the potentiation of action potentials along the axon. Using immunohistochemical and, to a lesser extent, …

The Economics Of The Atomic Bomb: Cost And Utilization, Jonathan M. Davis Mr. Apr 2011

The Economics Of The Atomic Bomb: Cost And Utilization, Jonathan M. Davis Mr.

Senior Honors Theses

Few moments in human history can be compared to the culmination of events that brought the atomic bomb into creation.  It is incredible to contemplate that while a nation was fighting a two front war that spanned from Europe into the Pacific, that the United States was able to utilize the time, energy, brains, materials, manpower, and capital to complete a project in four years. That under any other circumstances would have taken greater than half a century to complete.

First, this thesis will discuss breakthroughs in research that led scientists to believe that the atomic weapons could be built, …

Drug Discovery Using Chemical Systems Biology: Weak Inhibition Of Multiple Kinases May Contribute To The Anti-Cancer Effect Of Nelfinavir, Li Xie, Thomas Evangelidis, Lei Xie, Philip E. Bourne

Publications and Research

Nelfinavir is a potent HIV-protease inhibitor with pleiotropic effects in cancer cells. Experimental studies connect its anti-cancer effects to the suppression of the Akt signaling pathway, but the actual molecular targets remain unknown. Using a structural proteome-wide off-target pipeline, which integrates molecular dynamics simulation and MM/GBSA free energy calculations with ligand binding site comparison and biological network analysis, we identified putative human off-targets of Nelfinavir and analyzed the impact on the associated biological processes. Our results suggest that Nelfinavir is able to inhibit multiple members of the protein kinase-like superfamily, which are involved in the regulation of cellular processes vital …

Living Bacterial Sacrificial Porogens To Engineer Decellularized Porous Scaffolds, Umut A. Gurkan Apr 2011

Living Bacterial Sacrificial Porogens To Engineer Decellularized Porous Scaffolds, Umut A. Gurkan

Faculty Scholarship

Decellularization and cellularization of organs have emerged as disruptive methods in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Porous hydrogel scaffolds have widespread applications in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and drug discovery as viable tissue mimics. However, the existing hydrogel fabrication techniques suffer from limited control over pore interconnectivity, density and size, which leads to inefficient nutrient and oxygen transport to cells embedded in the scaffolds. Here, we demonstrated an innovative approach to develop a new platform for tissue engineered constructs using live bacteria as sacrificial porogens. E.coli were patterned and cultured in an interconnected three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel network. The growing bacteria …

Research Day

Periodontitis is the most common cause of adult tooth loss in the U.S., with an estimated 1 in 3 adults suffering from some form and 10-15% of adults developing severe forms. In addition to its direct impact, periodontitis also contributes to the development of several other diseases, including cardiovascular disease, pre-term low birth weight, and diabetes. Although the primary function of HO-1 is the breakdown of heme to carbon monoxide, iron and bilirubin, it has also been shown to play an important role in wound repair and the resolution of inflammation by mechanisms involving homeostatic regulation of the redox state …

Effects Of Nicotine And Glucose On Production Of Inflammatory Mediators In Response To Il-1 And Lps In Human Gingival Fibroblasts (Hgf), Sharlene Sanchez

Research Day

Periodontitis is the most common cause of adult tooth loss in the U.S., with an estimated 1 in 3 adults suffering from some form and 10 to 15% of adults developing severe form. In addition to its direct impact, periodontitis also contributes to the development of several other diseases, including cardiovascular disease, pre-term low birth weight, diabetes, and oral cancer. Since smoking and diabetes are frequently co-existing, modifiable risk factors for the development of periodontitis, as well as for cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer, this study is designed to determine whether and to what extent these factors interact …

Student-Faculty Research In Organic Chemistry, Timo V. Ovaska

Honors and Awards Speeches and Programs

Timo Ovaska remarks that the clothes we wear, the colors we see, the foods we eat, the fuels that power our cars, the medicines that make us heal and feel better, even the biochemical reactions that happen in our bodies are all manifestations of the importance of organic chemistry in daily life.

He also praises his students who chose to do research, as there is no mandatory research component for the chemistry major at Connecticut College, who have gone on to successful careers. Students chose to get involved not because it was going to be easy, but because they were …

The Effects Of Climatic And Geographic Events On The Cotton Mouse (Peromyscus Gossypinus), Sean M. Beckmann Apr 2011

The Effects Of Climatic And Geographic Events On The Cotton Mouse (Peromyscus Gossypinus), Sean M. Beckmann

Open Access Dissertations

Climatic and geographic events such as glaciations, island formation, river formation, and urbanization strongly affect habitat specialist species. By contrast, it is traditionally assumed that these events have little effect on habitat generalists but few studies have tested this assumption. In this study I sought to identify the effects of historic and contemporary biogeographic events on the genetic structure of a habitat generalist, the cotton mouse (Peromyscus gossypinus). This species is distributed throughout the southeastern United States, a region that has experienced dramatic geographic changes associated with both historic Pleistocene glacial cycles, as well as contemporary anthropogenic forces. In analyzing …

Burr’S Pond And Runnins River Annual Watershed Survey, 2011

Watershed Access Lab Projects

For the past ten years, AP Biology students at Seekonk High School have been required to complete an independent research project to fulfill the Ecology unit of the course during the summer prior to the course. Students must apply what they learned in their readings to a local ecosystem, Burr’s Pond, which is attached to the Runnins River. Students spend time at the pond area during the summer documenting organisms, evidence of population dynamics, animal behavior, trophic levels, nutrient cycling, etc. Students put together a Burr’s Pond Summer Field Research Project Portfolio to be submitted on the first day of …
