Spatial Analysis Of A Bioterrorist Attack On Four Major United States Cities Using An Aerosolized Hemorrhagic Fever Virus, Kathryn Prinslow
Spatial Analysis Of A Bioterrorist Attack On Four Major United States Cities Using An Aerosolized Hemorrhagic Fever Virus, Kathryn Prinslow
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Before the attack on September 11,2001, the United States was very vulnerable to a biological attack. Since then, those responsible for the security of the United States Homeland Security have become more aware of the country's vulnerability. Biological agents have the potential to give small groups of people unprecedented power to terrorize, as indicate by the "Amerithrax" attack in 2001, and of all of these agents, none have more potential for destruction than Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF). This research uses one of the deadliest viruses that have not been eradicated to identify the number of fatalities in an outbreak affecting …
The Role Of Albino3 And The Lipid Environment In Chloroplast Signal Recognition Particle Targeting, Nathan Lewis
The Role Of Albino3 And The Lipid Environment In Chloroplast Signal Recognition Particle Targeting, Nathan Lewis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Signal recognition particles (SRPs) in pro- and eukaryotes function in cotranslational targeting of nascent poplypeptides to an SRP receptor at the target membrane. A unique chloroplast SRP (cpSRP) functions post-translationally to direct light-harvesting chlorophyll-binding proteins (LHCPs) to the receptor cpFtsY at the thylakoid membrane for LHCP insertion in a process involving the integral membrane protein Albino3 (Alb3) and requiring GTP. Work here focuses on understanding cpSRP targeting events at the thylakoid membrane, specifically those involving Alb3 and the lipid environment.
We show an interaction between the novel cpSRP subunit cpSRP43 and the soluble, stromal-exposed C terminus of Albino3 (Alb3-Cterm). We …

The Influence Of Training Load On Performance And Psychological Variables In Female Collegiate Swimmers, Jacquelyn A. Nagle
The Influence Of Training Load On Performance And Psychological Variables In Female Collegiate Swimmers, Jacquelyn A. Nagle
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Overtraining has become a very important topic in athletics over the past few decades. Resulting from an imbalance between training stress and recovery, the manifestation of overtraining is unique to each individual, with deviations in physiological, psychological, and performance variables. Regardless of the overwhelming amount of research, there is a lack of any comprehensive studies addressing all components of overtraining. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe the effects training load had on performance and psychological variables across a competitive season in collegiate female swimmers. Participants included 19 Division I female swimmers (Age: 19.74±1.19 yrs) who completed 6 …

Several aspects of my work include psychological influences, my observations of the natural world, my artistic process and my major artistic influences. Chapter I focuses on the formation of my interest in psychology as it relates to entangled personal relationships and the translation of these ideas into my art. Attachment …
A Case Study Of Single-Sex Biology Classes In A High School In South Georgia, Robert Huston Costlow
A Case Study Of Single-Sex Biology Classes In A High School In South Georgia, Robert Huston Costlow
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The research on single-sex classrooms, especially in high schools, is at best, sparse. Settings and findings vary so dramatically from one area to another that correlating studies is difficult. However, with the advent of No Child Left Behind (2001), schools have been given the opportunity to explore new and creative ways to increase student achievement. Single-sex classrooms are one of the ways schools across the country are attempting to meet the criteria of NCLB. Some single-sex studies have shown that female students improve test scores in areas that are generally thought of as male-dominated areas, such as math and science; …

Blarina Hylophaga (Sorciomorpha: Soricidae), Cody W. Thompson, Jerry R. Choate, Hugh H. Genoways, Elmer J. Finck
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Blarina hylophaga (Elliot, 1899) is a soricid commonly called Elliot’s short-tailed shrew. A short-legged, robust shrew with a long, pointed snout and a short tail; it is 1 of 4 species in the genus Blarina. It occurs throughout most of the Great Plains of the United States, where it inhabits moist, well-drained grassland and riparian areas with deep leaf litter. It is listed as a species of greatest conservation need in Iowa and at possible risk in Texas, which might be due to the limited knowledge of the species throughout its geographic range.

Eugenics And Modern Biology: Critiques Of Eugenics, 1910-1945, Garland E. Allen
Eugenics And Modern Biology: Critiques Of Eugenics, 1910-1945, Garland E. Allen
Biology Faculty Research
Eugenics in most western countries in the first four decades of the twentieth century was based on the idea that genes control most human phenotypic traits, everything from physical features such as polydactyly and eye color to physiological conditions such as the A-B-O blood groups to mental and personality traits such as “feeblemindedness”, alcoholism and pauperism. It assessing the development of the eugenics movement – its rise and decline between 1900 and 1950 – it is important to recognize that its naïve assumptions and often flawed methodologies were openly criticized at the time by scientists and non-scientists alike. This paper …

Essays On The Effectiveness And Competitiveness Of State Government Expenditures, J. Sebastian Leguizamon
Essays On The Effectiveness And Competitiveness Of State Government Expenditures, J. Sebastian Leguizamon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation addresses issues related to the effectiveness and consequences of state and local spending in the United States. Chapter two examines how merit-based aid tuition assistance contributes to the retention of graduates in a state. An analysis of restricted-use administrative data for West Virginia graduates suggests that in-state college graduates that received merit-based aid to attend college are no more likely to work in the state after graduation, compared to those who did not received the assistance. These graduates are between 1.9 and 5.2 percentage points less likely to remain in the state, decreasing the overall effect of merit-based …
A Chemical Neural Network And Collective Behavior In Globally Coupled Oscillators, Fang Wang
A Chemical Neural Network And Collective Behavior In Globally Coupled Oscillators, Fang Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The nervous system controls almost all actions in the body, and understanding its detailed structure and mechanism is one of the great challenges of science. Artificial neural networks have been modeled computationally to solve specific problems such as robot motion; however, few experimental studies have been designed to simulate biological neural networks because of the lack of experimental media with neural-like properties. An experimental network based on the photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction has been developed, in which the local excitability is controlled by light intensity. The spatiotemporal dynamics of these networks has been characterized, including sustained oscillations and collapse to the …

Scarcity-Induced Domestic Conflict: Examining The Interactive Effects Of Environmental Scarcity And ‘Ethnic’ Population Pressures, Cigdem Sirin
Departmental Papers (PS)
This study argues that environmental scarcity is more likely to result in civil conflict in countries that experience ‘ethnic’ population pressures (i.e. where the size of the largest minority group is close to parity with the majority group). I refer to this argument as the ‘parity-threat’ approach to the study of scarcity-induced domestic conflict. I empirically test my argument by analysing time-series cross-section data for the period 1979–2000 using four alternative environmental indicators: (1) ecological footprint, (2) biocapacity, (3) scarcity of ecological reserves and (4) water scarcity. The results demonstrate that environmental scarcity increases the probability of civil conflict when …

Using Finite Mixture Modeling To Deal With Systematic Measurement Error: A Case Study, Min Liu, Gregory R. Hancock, Jeffrey R. Harring
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Conventional methods and analyses view measurement error as random. A scenario is presented where a variable was measured with systematic error. Mixture models with systematic parameter constraints were used to test hypotheses in the context of general linear models; this accommodated the heterogeneity arising due to systematic measurement error.
The Implications Of Merleau-Ponty For The Human Sciences, Ryan Marcotte
The Implications Of Merleau-Ponty For The Human Sciences, Ryan Marcotte
Senior Honors Projects
The Implications of Merleau-Ponty for the Human Sciences Ryan Marcotte Cobb Faculty Sponsor: Galen Johnson, Philosophy The American Anthropology Association (AAA) made headlines in November 2010 due to a controversial change in their 'Long-Range Plan.' The revised AAA mission statement omits all mention of the word 'science' and this omission has sparked a fierce debate within the anthropology community. The debate reveals that the study of social phenomena can be approached from two competing points of view – a scientific and a non-scientific perspective. This project is concerned with the historical and intellectual developments that led to this competition between …

Investigation of Improvements in the Quality of Life for Cancer Patients
Joelle Gagnon
Faculty Sponsor: Lenore Martin, CELS
The treatment of cancer has been a topic of study for decades due to the devastating effects of the disease and the need for a therapeutic regimen that presents maximum efficacy with minimal toxicity. For cancer patients, quality of life is disturbed by not only the pathogenesis of disease, but also the potential toxic effects on the body as a result of the prescribed therapeutic regimen. Topoisomerase inhibition is a molecular mechanism of action of chemotherapy agents that have been of clinical …
The Importance Of Course Offerings On The Topic Of Environmental Sustainability At The University Of Rhode Island, Sarah Kane
Senior Honors Projects
For my project, I created a survey for University of Rhode Island students’ exploring their experiences and interest in course offerings on sustainability. I am distributing it to students through different mediums such as email, Facebook and in person. Through my analysis of the results, I am seeking some evidence about whether or not students at this institute feel that our school offers enough courses on this topic and whether or not students are interested in taking courses on this topic.
As a business major, I have taken several courses where we learned about surveying and analysis of the results. …
Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, Heather M. Chapman
Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, Heather M. Chapman
Senior Honors Projects
The concept of love has been an eternally elusive subject. It is a definition and meaning that philosophers, psychologists, and biologists have been seeking since the beginning of time. Wars have been waged and fought over it, while friendships have been initiated and have ended because of this idea. But what exactly is love, and why is it important to define this enigma?
In order to help define this idea of love, several books and numerous research articles were consulted, and interviews were conducted with faculty of The University of Rhode Island. Dr. Nasser Zawia was interviewed, in order to …
Is Creativity Related To Physical Health? The Relationships Between Creativity, Flow, Self-Esteem, Physical Activity And Health-Related Quality Of Life, Molly Siwula
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The relationship between creativity and overall health has not been widely examined, as researchers have previously focused mainly on the association between creativity and mental illness. Certain aspects of the creative personality (i.e. high physical energy, intelligence, passion, and self-discipline) may predict engagement in healthy behaviors. Creativity has been shown to positively relate to self-esteem, which also has been linked to general health. In addition, both athletes and creative individuals tend to experience flow. This study examined self-esteem and flow as possible mechanisms to partially account for the relationship between creativity and general health. Community participants (N = 83) …
Neuropsychiatry In The Courtroom, Richard L. Elliott
Neuropsychiatry In The Courtroom, Richard L. Elliott
Mercer Law Review
This Symposium, "The Brain Sciences in the Courtroom," will make frequent reference to neuropsychiatry, neuroinaging, and brain science, and assumes a rudimentary understanding of neuroscience. While some readers have considerable experience in these areas, others might benefit from a brief introduction to key concepts in neuroscience, and to their applications in the courtroom from a historical perspective. In providing such an introduction, several points will become clear. For 200 years, lawyers, judges, and expert witnesses have struggled to understand how neuroscience can be helpful in the courtroom, with varying degrees of success. This is, in part, due to the fact …
Neuroscience Basics For Lawyers, Oliver R. Goodenough, Micaela Tucker
Neuroscience Basics For Lawyers, Oliver R. Goodenough, Micaela Tucker
Mercer Law Review
Neuroscience is, without a doubt, one of the "hot" disciplines in contemporary science. The advances in neuroscience have come from a cycle of technological and conceptual developments that have led to new models not only of how we think but also of how thought translates into behavior. Neuroscience has spawned a number of interdisciplinary offspring-among them "neurolaw," the application of the insights of neuroscience to problems of law and vice versa. The Mercer University, Walter F. George School of Law Symposium from which this volume of the Mercer Law Review has emerged is but one manifestation of a rapidly increasing …
Ten Legal Dissonances, Morris B. Hoffman
Ten Legal Dissonances, Morris B. Hoffman
Mercer Law Review
The law is extraordinarily good at operationalizing our folk psychology. Law is, indeed, common sense writ large. As we have learned more, however, about human nature and how the brain instantiates that nature, it is becoming equally clear that there are some fissures in this picture, some discrete aspects of our presumed natures, that the law consistently gets terribly wrong. In this essay, I briefly discuss ten common and wide-ranging legal dissonances. Although I will touch on some suggested patches, by and large, this Article is a descriptive, rather than prescriptive, exercise.
First, some apologies about nomenclature. By using the …
Brain Scans As Evidence: Truths, Proofs, Lies, And Lessons, Francis X. Shen, Owen D. Jones
Brain Scans As Evidence: Truths, Proofs, Lies, And Lessons, Francis X. Shen, Owen D. Jones
Mercer Law Review
This Brain Sciences in the Courtroom Symposium is both timely and important. Given recently developed and rapidly improving brain imaging techniques that enable non-invasive detection of brain activity, civil and criminal courts increasingly encounter attorneys proffering brain scans as evidence.' The reason is simple. In addition to caring about how people act-such as when they cause a person's death or sign a will-the legal system's inquiries frequently turn on determining what people were thinking, or were capable of thinking, when they acted.
In criminal law, for example, the same act can yield anything from mere probation to decades in …
