A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal, Sarah M. Asio Jul 2011

A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal, Sarah M. Asio

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The application of traditional approaches to the design of efficient facilities can be tedious and time consuming when uncertainty and a number of constraints exist. Queuing models and mathematical programming techniques are not able to capture the complex interaction between resources, the environment and space constraints for dynamic stochastic processes. In the following study discrete event simulation is applied to the facility planning process for a grain delivery terminal. The discrete event simulation approach has been applied to studies such as capacity planning and facility layout for a gasoline station and evaluating the resource requirements for a manufacturing facility. To …

Imsa360: Summer 2011, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

Just prior to becoming IMSA’s second President in 2007, I served on IMSA’s Strategic Planning Team. The plan we developed was big and bold, and when first presented, there was some concern that it would collapse under its own size. However, we dreamed big and intended to demonstrate that we could, to paraphrase Walt Disney, both dream it and do it! In my first year as President, I was determined that our plan would become a dynamic, actionable document that would make an enduring difference. Four years later, I am proud to say that due in large part to the …

Modeling And Control For Heave Dynamics Of A Flexible Wing Micro Aerial Vehicle Distributed Parameter System, Lisa M. Kuhn Jul 2011

Modeling And Control For Heave Dynamics Of A Flexible Wing Micro Aerial Vehicle Distributed Parameter System, Lisa M. Kuhn

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, much research has been motivated by the idea of biologically-inspired flight. It is a conjecture of the United States Air Force that incorporating characteristics of biological flight into air vehicles will significantly improve the maneuverability and performance of modern aircraft. Although there are studies which involve the aerodynamics, structural dynamics, modeling, and control of flexible wing micro aerial vehicles (MAVs), issues of control and vehicular modeling as a whole are largely unexplored. Modeling with such dynamics lends itself to systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) with nonlinearities, and limited control theory is available for such systems.

Maximum Likelihood Approach To Pointwise Estimation In Statistical Data Processing Under Interval Uncertainty, Nitaya Buntao, Sa-Aat Niwitpong, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditional statistical estimates C(x1, ..., xn) for different statistical characteristics (such as mean, variance, etc.) implicitly assume that we know the sample values x1, ..., xn exactly. In practice, the sample values Xi come from measurements and are, therefore, in general, different from the actual (unknown) values Xi of the corresponding quantities. Sometimes, we know the probabilities of different values of the measurement error ΔXi = Xi - xi, but often, the only information that we have about the measurement error is the upper bound Δi …

Code Switching And Social Prestige: Code Switching Among Iranian University Learners, S. Sadighian, Ali Rahimi Jul 2011

Code Switching And Social Prestige: Code Switching Among Iranian University Learners, S. Sadighian, Ali Rahimi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

“Two or more phonemic systems may coexist in the speech of a monolingual.” This was what initially called “switching code” by Fries and Pike (1949). People change codes or use words other than their native ones while speaking in their native language. Codes are thus defined as a verbal component that can be as small as a morpheme or as comprehensive and complex as the entire system of language. (Ayemoni, 2006) code-switching is related to and indicative of group membership in particular types of bilingual speech communities, such that the regularities of the alternating use of two or more languages …

Esl Program Models And Court Cases: An Overview For Administrators, Chris Jochum

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The demographic of our country’s public school students is very diverse and continues to change. By 2020, African American, Hispanic, Asian American and Native American groups will account for more than 40 percent of the U.S. population and this percentage is expected to increase to 50 percent by the year 2040 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2003). Currently, 46 percent of all schools in the United States have English Language Learners (ELL) or English as Second Language (ESL) students (National Center for Educational Statistics). Furthermore, Hispanics now make up the largest minority group in the United States and it’s estimated that by …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The dynamics of negative polaron and triplet exciton transport within a series of monodisperse platinum (Pt) acetylide oligomers is reported. The oligomers consist of Pt-acetylide repeats, [PtL(2)-C C-ph-C C-](n) (where L = PBu(3) and Ph = 1,4-phenylene, n = 2, 3, 6, and 10), capped with naphthalene diimide (NDI) end groups. The Pt acetylide segments are electro- and photoactive, and they serve as conduits for transport of electrons (negative polaron) and triplet excitons. The NDI end groups are relatively strong acceptors, serving as traps for the carriers. Negative polaron transport is studied by using pulse radiolysis/transient absorption at the Brookhaven …

The Role Of Tacr1 Genotypes In Craving, Depression, And Alcohol Dependence., Sara Keelan Blaine

Psychology ETDs

Given that stress and major depression are putative causal factors in alcohol consumption, the exploration of the genes and the associated neurobiological mechanisms that influence the relationship between stress, depression, and alcohol dependence (AD) is a first step toward the development of novel medications for AD. The tachykinin receptor 1 (TACR1) gene is a promising candidate gene, showing an association with stress-related behaviors (Thorsell et al., 2010), major depression (Kramer et al., 2004), and AD treatment outcome (George et al., 2008). The purpose of the current study was to determine if TACR1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with (1) …

Rough Seas For Renewable Energy: Addressing Regulatory Overlap For Hydrokinetic Projects On The Outer Continental Shelf, Amanda Righi Jul 2011

Rough Seas For Renewable Energy: Addressing Regulatory Overlap For Hydrokinetic Projects On The Outer Continental Shelf, Amanda Righi

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Hydrokinetic energy harnesses the power of the oceans and generates renewable energy with a low carbon footprint. Because wave and tidal energy projects have not yet been initiated for the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and scientific knowledge of the effects on the ocean environment is uncertain, analysis under the National Environmental Policy Act is particularly important. However, overlapping jurisdiction on the OCS creates an inhospitable regulatory environment for hydrokinetic energy developers and marine ecosystem protection. This comment will analyze these overlapping and duplicative regulations and will make recommendations to streamline the environmental review process. Programmatic environmental impact statements, adaptive management …

Dewatering Trust Responsibility: The New Klamath River Hydroelectric And Restoration Agreements, Thomas P. Schlosser Jul 2011

Dewatering Trust Responsibility: The New Klamath River Hydroelectric And Restoration Agreements, Thomas P. Schlosser

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

In order to protect Indian property rights to water and fish that Indians rely on for subsistence and moderate income, the Interior Department Solicitor has construed federal statutes and case law to conclude that the Department must restrict irrigation in the Klamath River Basin of Oregon and Northern California. Draft legislation, prescribed by the February 18, 2010 Klamath River Hydroelectric Agreement and the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement, would release the United States from its trust duty to protect the rights of Indian tribes in the Klamath River Basin. The agreements will also prolong the Clean Water Act Section 401 application …

Minerogenetic Mechanisms Occurring In The Cave Environment: An Overview, Bogdan P. Onac, Paolo Forti Jul 2011

Minerogenetic Mechanisms Occurring In The Cave Environment: An Overview, Bogdan P. Onac, Paolo Forti

KIP Articles

Perhaps man’s first motivation to explore caves, beyond using them as shelter, was the search for substances that were not available elsewhere: most of them were minerals. However, for a long time it was believed that the cave environment was not very interesting from the mineralogical point of view. This was due to the fact that most cave deposits are normally composed of a single compound: calcium carbonate. Therefore, the systematic study of cave mineralogy is of only recent origin. However, although only a limited number of natural cavities have been investigated in detail, about 350 cave minerals have already …

Stochastic Life-History Variation In Populations Of Western Ribbon Snakes (Thamnophis Proximus) In East Texas, Jeremy Chamberlain Jul 2011

Stochastic Life-History Variation In Populations Of Western Ribbon Snakes (Thamnophis Proximus) In East Texas, Jeremy Chamberlain

Biology Theses

Understanding variation in life-history strategies can be important when determining the influence of an organism's environment on its natural history. Variation in strategies can play a significant role on the overall fitness and survival of an individual. Some environmental conditions may influence this variation more than others. In particular, stochastic environments, such as a floodplain, may have large impacts on life history strategies of organisms living within them. Floodplains are known to have high rates of extrinsic mortality. Theoretically this should shift life-history traits toward a fast-type strategy, with fast growth rates, high annual fecundity, and larger mean body-sizes. To …

Documenting Effects Of Urbanization On Flora Using Herbarium Records, Rebecca W. Dolan, Marcia E. Moore, Jessica Stephens Jul 2011

Documenting Effects Of Urbanization On Flora Using Herbarium Records, Rebecca W. Dolan, Marcia E. Moore, Jessica Stephens

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

  1. As human populations increasingly live in cities, urban floras and the ecosystem services they provide are under increasing threat. Understanding the effects of urbanization on plants can help to predict future changes and identify ways to preserve biological diversity. Relatively few studies document changes through time in the flora of a focal region and those that do primarily address European floras. They often rely on contemporary spatial gradient studies as surrogates for changes with time.

  2. We compare historical species records (prior to 1940) with the current flora for Marion County, Indiana, USA, home to Indianapolis, the 13th largest city in …

An Ongoing Pulmonary Cowpox Virus Infection Suppresses An Immune Response To Ova Peptide Delivered To The Lungs, Cara Lynn Hrusch

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Cowpox virus (CPXV), a close relative of variola virus, the orthopoxvirus that causes smallpox, can suppress the immune system through a large array of immunosuppressive gene products. We developed a murine model in which DO11.10 T cells specific for an OVA peptide were transferred into BALB/c mice to assess the impact of a pulmonary CPXV infection on DO11.10 T cell proliferation in lung draining lymph nodes following intranasal OVA peptide delivery. High and low-dose CPXV infections were compared. Both doses lead to clinical illness including ruffled coat and weight loss, but the high dose is lethal and is characterized by …
