Evaluation Of Vacuum Packaging On The Physical Properties, Solubility, And Storage Space Of Dairy Powders, Hadi Eshpari Jul 2011

Evaluation Of Vacuum Packaging On The Physical Properties, Solubility, And Storage Space Of Dairy Powders, Hadi Eshpari

Master's Theses

As many of the dairy powders manufactured have to travel long distances to reach their customers, both domestically and internationally, there is considerable interest among dairy powder manufacturers to maintain the quality of their products for relatively long storage periods. Dairy powders can have a long shelf life if packaged and stored properly. Vacuum packaging can be an attractive packaging strategy to maintain the quality of dairy powders and provide added value by improving the efficiency of using the storage space; because of the inherent compactness of these products. Vacuum packaged dry dairy ingredients may also have added ease of …

Building On The Foundation Of The Future: The Millennial Church, Deborah Loyd Jul 2011

Building On The Foundation Of The Future: The Millennial Church, Deborah Loyd

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

The purpose of this study is to help church leaders find ways of inspiring commitment to the church among the Millennial Generation. The Millennial Generation has been abandoning traditional churches at a rate of nearly 80 percent once they leave high school, many of them never to return. My goal was to discover solutions, new ways of thinking, and possibly a new design for faith community. For this I chose to research a community where Millennials thrive, The Bridge Church of Portland, Oregon. My chapters include: The Problem in chapter 1, Literary Reviews in chapter 2, The Context of Ministry …

Misuse Of Dna Evidence Is Not Always A “Harmless Error”: Dna Evidence, Prosecutorial Misconduct, And Wrongful Conviction, Kimberly Cogdell Boies Jul 2011

Misuse Of Dna Evidence Is Not Always A “Harmless Error”: Dna Evidence, Prosecutorial Misconduct, And Wrongful Conviction, Kimberly Cogdell Boies

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The purpose of this article is to highlight the areas of DNA analysis that make it less reliable than most people believe and to show that because of this, misconduct related to DNA evidence should not receive harmless error review. The most reliable evidence sees no color, gender or socioeconomic status. Evidence can be an imperfect measure and manipulated by the pride and prejudice of those who control it. The recent explosion in the number of exonerations for wrongful conviction highlights a major flaw in the system - prosecutorial misconduct. This misconduct can take the form of presenting unreliable evidence, …

The Illusion Of Depth In Stained Glass: Exposed To The Light, Robert N. Oddy Jul 2011

The Illusion Of Depth In Stained Glass: Exposed To The Light, Robert N. Oddy

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Stained glass artwork often looks flat. Of course, most stained glass panels are flat. What I mean is that the objects depicted look flat. In my own work, I have given a lot of attention to creating the illusion of depth. What is depth? It refers to the spacial dimension that recedes directly away from our eyes into the distance. If a picture has depth, we see some of its elements as solid objects; some appear closer than others; we are aware of foreground, middle distance and background.

Formulation And Characterization Of Lipid-Based Drug Delivery System Of Raloxifene-Microemulsion And Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery System, Hetal Thakkar, Jitesh Nangesh, Mayur Parmar, Divyakant Patel Jul 2011

Formulation And Characterization Of Lipid-Based Drug Delivery System Of Raloxifene-Microemulsion And Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery System, Hetal Thakkar, Jitesh Nangesh, Mayur Parmar, Divyakant Patel

HPD Articles

BACKGROUND: Raloxifene, a second-generation selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women is administered orally in the form of a tablet. The absolute bioavailability of the drug is only 2% because of extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism. Lipid-based formulations are reported to reduce the first-pass metabolism by promoting its lymphatic uptake. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present investigation, microemulsion and Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery System (SMEDDS) formulations of Raloxifene were prepared. The prepared formulations were characterized for drug loading, size, transparency, zeta potential, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and in vitro intestinal permeability. RESULTS: The results indicated that high …

To Lynch A Child: Bullying And Gender Non-Conformity In Our Nation's Schools, Michael J. Higdon Jul 2011

To Lynch A Child: Bullying And Gender Non-Conformity In Our Nation's Schools, Michael J. Higdon

Scholarly Works

“Lynching is a terror that has many forms; there is the lynching of men’s spirits as well as their bodies.” -- Richard Wright

In January 2010, a 9-year old boy named Montana Lance hung himself in a bathroom at the Texas elementary school he attended. Although certainly shocking, such acts are unfortunately becoming less and less unusual. In fact, the suicide of Montana Lance is very reminiscent of what happened in April 2009 when two 11-year-old boys, one in Massachusetts and one in Georgia, likewise committed suicide just days apart. What would cause these children to end their lives? The …

Preserving Attorney-Client Confidentiality At The Cost Of Another’S Innocence: A Systemic Approach, Ken Strutin Jul 2011

Preserving Attorney-Client Confidentiality At The Cost Of Another’S Innocence: A Systemic Approach, Ken Strutin

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

When a client admits to her lawyer that she is responsible for a crime that someone else has been charged with, it alters the geometry of the attorney-client relationship. A third party has now entered the room triangulating the lawyer's responsibilities to her client, to the innocent party and to the justice system. The idea of revealing a client's private confession is anathema to lawyers trained to carefully guard their clients' secrets. Fidelity to the client, preservation of confidences, and the right to counsel strongly militate in favor of nondisclosure. On the other hand, an innocent person is facing a …

Women As Consumers Of Reproductive Technology: Media Representation Versus Reality, Shirley Shalev, Dafna Lemish Jul 2011

Women As Consumers Of Reproductive Technology: Media Representation Versus Reality, Shirley Shalev, Dafna Lemish

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

In light of the growing role of media as a central source of health information, this article evaluates the contribution of television representations to the dissemination of information and social conceptions of women regarding new reproductive practices. The study reported here examined a case study of media representations of surrogacy in a popular television series in Israel, entitled A Touch of Happiness, which has been broadcast repeatedly over the last decade. The analysis compared the televised content with the legal framework and social reality of surrogacy, and found major discrepancies between the two. Thus, this study demonstrates the role media …

The Occurrence Of False Positive Tests For Gunshot Residue Based On Simulations Of The Suspect's Occupation, Christopher R. Dockery, Matthew B. Rosenberg, Kimberly Kammerdiener, Lauren E. Mcadams Jul 2011

The Occurrence Of False Positive Tests For Gunshot Residue Based On Simulations Of The Suspect's Occupation, Christopher R. Dockery, Matthew B. Rosenberg, Kimberly Kammerdiener, Lauren E. Mcadams

Faculty Articles

Samples collected from high-risk occupations, or simulations thereof, are analyzed for elemental composition using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LlBS) to determine the occurrence of false positive gunshot residue results generated in the work environment. Previous work involving the study of lifetime of detectable amounts of gunshot residue on the hands of a suspect shooter found that gunshot residue exists up to 5.27 days after a firearm discharge. However, certain environmental and/or occupational false positive tests for gunshot residue could result when sampling non-shooters. Samples collected from occupations or simulations thereof include welding, pyrotechnics, key cutting, mechanics, and paper products all of …

She Blinded Me With Science: Wrongful Convictions And The “Reverse Csi-Effect”, Mark A. Godsey, Marie Alou

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Part I of this Essay explores the problem of "junk science" in this country that has led to a plethora of wrongful convictions of the innocent. In this Part, I suggest that, contrary to the beliefs of many CSIwatching jurors, the state of forensics in this country is far from how it is portrayed by Hollywood. Part II then discusses my anecdotal experience with cases in which jurors, who, while seemingly unaware of the problems that have been documented in this country with junk science, have convicted defendants on little more than what many in my field know to be …

Tissue-Specific Thyroid Hormone Regulation Of Gene Transcripts Encoding Iodothyronine Deiodinases And Thyroid Hormone Receptors In Striped Parrotfish (Scarus Iseri), Kaitlin M. Johnson, Sean C. Lema Jul 2011

Tissue-Specific Thyroid Hormone Regulation Of Gene Transcripts Encoding Iodothyronine Deiodinases And Thyroid Hormone Receptors In Striped Parrotfish (Scarus Iseri), Kaitlin M. Johnson, Sean C. Lema

Biological Sciences

In fish as in other vertebrates, the diverse functions of thyroid hormones are mediated at the peripheral tissue level through iodothyronine deiodinase (dio) enzymes and thyroid hormone receptor (tr) proteins. In this study, we examined thyroid hormone regulation of mRNAs encoding the three deiodinases dio1, dio2 and dio3 – as well as three thyroid hormone receptors trαA, trαB and trβ – in initial phase striped parrotfish (Scarus iseri). Parrotfish were treated with dissolved phase T3 (20 nM) or methimazole (3 mM) for 3 days. Treatment with exogenous T3 elevated circulating T3, while the …

Planning Approaches For Water Resources Development In The Lower Mekong Basin, Robert Costanza, Ida Kubiszewski, Peter Paquet, Jeffrey King, Shpresa Halimi, Hansa Sanguanngoi, Nguyen Luong Bach, Richard Frankel, Jiragorn Ganaseni, Apisom Intralawan, David Morell

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Governments in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) face decisions that involve trade-offs between, for example, the economic benefits from hydropower generation and potentially irreversible negative impacts on the ecosystems that provide livelihoods and food security to the rural poor. These decisions involve complex problems that are both poorly understood in scientific terms and subject to rapid, potentially catastrophic change over time. A comprehensive, whole systems approach that adequately addresses the risks and uncertainties involved is necessary, but this is a daunting challenge for researchers, decision makers, and managers. They must develop the capacity to plan, coordinate, and implement a program …

Uncover Disease Genes By Maximizing Information Flow In The Phenome-Interactome Network., Yong Chen, Tao Jiang, Rui Jiang Jul 2011

Uncover Disease Genes By Maximizing Information Flow In The Phenome-Interactome Network., Yong Chen, Tao Jiang, Rui Jiang

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

MOTIVATION: Pinpointing genes that underlie human inherited diseases among candidate genes in susceptibility genetic regions is the primary step towards the understanding of pathogenesis of diseases. Although several probabilistic models have been proposed to prioritize candidate genes using phenotype similarities and protein-protein interactions, no combinatorial approaches have been proposed in the literature.

RESULTS: We propose the first combinatorial approach for prioritizing candidate genes. We first construct a phenome-interactome network by integrating the given phenotype similarity profile, protein-protein interaction network and associations between diseases and genes. Then, we introduce a computational method called MAXIF to maximize the information flow in this …

Mutual Mother–Offspring Vocal Recognition In An Ungulate Hider Species (Capra Hircus), Elodie F. Briefer, Alan G. Mcelligott Jul 2011

Mutual Mother–Offspring Vocal Recognition In An Ungulate Hider Species (Capra Hircus), Elodie F. Briefer, Alan G. Mcelligott

Sentience Collection

Parent–offspring recognition can be essential for offspring survival and important to avoid misdirected parental care when progeny mingle in large social groups. In ungulates, offspring anti-predator strategies (hiding vs. following) result in differences in mother–offspring interactions, and thus different selection pressures acting on the recognition process during the first weeks of life. Hider offspring are isolated and relatively stationary and silent to avoid detection by predators, whereas follower offspring are mobile and rapidly mix in large social groups. For these reasons, hiders have been suggested to show low offspring call individuality leading to unidirectional recognition of mothers by offspring and …
