A Functional Assessment Of The Use Of Virtual Simulations To Train Distance Preservice Special Education Teachers To Conduct Individualized Education Program Team Meetings, Lee Landrum Mason

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The individualized education program (IEP) is a critical component of providing special education services to children with disabilities, outlining the services and modifications that will be provided to help them make progress towards the general curriculum. While simulations have been shown to be an effective means of teaching special education policies and procedures, this can be challenging when working with distance students. The purpose of this study was to identify and examine how virtual simulations function to train preservice teachers learning to conduct IEP team meetings.

Seven preservice special education teachers enrolled in a mild/moderate distance degree and licensure program …

Ungulate Damage To Safflower In San Juan County, Utah, Michael J. Haney Aug 2011

Ungulate Damage To Safflower In San Juan County, Utah, Michael J. Haney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In Utah, farmers are concerned that ungulates are damaging safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) fields. I examined elk (Cervus elaphus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) damage to safflower production in San Juan County, Utah during 2009 and 2010. Data on damaged safflower plants were collected within 28 fields, totaling 1,581 ha (13 fields totaling 963 ha during 2009; 15 fields totaling 618 ha during 2010). I compared 3 methods to assess losses: ungulate-proof exclosures, adjacent plant compensation method, and counting the number of damaged plants in 50-m transects (safflower count method). Exclosures were of limited use …

Design And Development Of A Sustainability Toolkit For Simulation Modeling And Analysis, Xi Zhou Aug 2011

Design And Development Of A Sustainability Toolkit For Simulation Modeling And Analysis, Xi Zhou

Theses

A simulation-based sustainability toolkit is developed in this research, in order to efficiently provide the capability of modeling and evaluating the sustainability related performance measures in systems of interest. As sustainability related issues, such as energy consumption, emissions, and waste generation are becoming a more integrated part of operational and long-term planning decisions, simulation modeling is needed to analyze the system performance not only from the traditional system performance measures such as productivity and efficiency, but also taking into account the environmental impacts within the studied system in order to aid in decision-making. This research introduces the concept and general …

Evaluation Of Cfd Based Hemolysis Prediction Methods, Oyuna Myagmar Aug 2011

Evaluation Of Cfd Based Hemolysis Prediction Methods, Oyuna Myagmar

Theses

Accurate quantitative evaluation of shear stress-related hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) could be used to improve blood handling devices, including left ventricular assist devices (LVAD). Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) predicts the fluid dynamics of complex pump geometry and has been used to track the shear stress history of red blood cells as they travel through these devices. Several models that predict the relationship between hemolysis, shear stress and exposure time have been used to evaluate the hemolysis in the pumps. However, the prediction accuracy has not reached the satisfactory level. The goal of my thesis is to investigate the …

Binge Drinking In Undergraduate Mexican-Origin Students And Its' Relation To Impulsivity, Rosalva M. Longoria Aug 2011

Binge Drinking In Undergraduate Mexican-Origin Students And Its' Relation To Impulsivity, Rosalva M. Longoria

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Heavy drinking is more prevalent in college students ages 18 through 21 than non-students (NIAAA, 2010). Impulsivity and binge drinking have shown an association (Balodis, Potenza & Olmstead, 2009). An important aspect of this relationship is the influencing factors that may help in determining the effects of drinking on academic performance. In order to predict this behavior, we collected information on tendencies to be impulsive and those that have shown binge drinking behavior from 151 undergraduate students, 11 non-Hispanics, 3 Hispanics, and 137 Hispanics of Mexican-origin attending the University of Texas-Pan American. Of the Mexican-origin students, 37% reported binge drinking …

A Hubel Wiesel Model Of Early Concept Generalization Based On Local Correlation Of Input Features, Sepideh Sadeghi, Kiruthika Ramanathan Aug 2011

A Hubel Wiesel Model Of Early Concept Generalization Based On Local Correlation Of Input Features, Sepideh Sadeghi, Kiruthika Ramanathan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hubel Wiesel models, successful in visual processing algorithms, have only recently been used in conceptual representation. Despite the biological plausibility of a Hubel-Wiesel like architecture for conceptual memory and encouraging preliminary results, there is no implementation of how inputs at each layer of the hierarchy should be integrated for processing by a given module, based on the correlation of the features. In our paper, we propose the input integration framework - a set of operations performed on the inputs to the learning modules of the Hubel Wiesel model of conceptual memory. These operations weight the modules as being general or …

Musical Emotions: Predicting Second-By-Second Subjective Feelings Of Emotion From Low-Level Psychoacoustic Features And Physiological Measurements, E Coutinho, A Cangelosi Aug 2011

Musical Emotions: Predicting Second-By-Second Subjective Feelings Of Emotion From Low-Level Psychoacoustic Features And Physiological Measurements, E Coutinho, A Cangelosi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We sustain that the structure of affect elicited by music is largely dependent on dynamic temporal patterns in low-level music structural parameters. In support of this claim, we have previously provided evidence that spatiotemporal dynamics in psychoacoustic features resonate with two psychological dimensions of affect underlying judgments of subjective feelings: arousal and valence. In this article we extend our previous investigations in two aspects. First, we focus on the emotions experienced rather than perceived while listening to music. Second, we evaluate the extent to which peripheral feedback in music can account for the predicted emotional responses, that is, the role …

Incorporating Case Studies Into An Undergraduate Genetics Course, Marlene Murray Aug 2011

Incorporating Case Studies Into An Undergraduate Genetics Course, Marlene Murray

Faculty Publications

Genetics is considered one of the most challenging courses in the biology curricula at both the secondary and post secondary levels. Case based teaching has been shown to improve student perception and performance outcomes in both non-science and science courses. Thus in an effort to improve outcomes, case studies were integrated into an undergraduate genetics course as a supplement to lecture and replacement to recitation. Student perception and performance when case studies were used was compared to two previous years before the incorporation of case studies. Student course evaluations, pre and post surveys of student knowledge, and exam scores indicated …

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Phytoplankton Biomass In Coastal Mississippi Waters, Lorin Matthew Dornback

Master's Theses

Chlorophyll concentrations were measured in western Mississippi coastal waters to determine the spatial and temporal variability of phytoplankton. Nutrients (nitrate, silicate, phosphate), river discharge, temperature, salinity, stratification, tides, currents and winds were measured in concert with the phytoplankton concentrations. The purpose of this study was to determine the seasonal variability in phytoplankton and what was driving the variability. This study was comprised of a three year (September 2007-November 2010) time series where samples were taken once a month for eight stations. Profiles of each station were taken using a Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) sensor and a WET Labs FL-3 …

Feeding Selectivity And Habitat Usage Of Esox Americanus, Scott Richard Clark Aug 2011

Feeding Selectivity And Habitat Usage Of Esox Americanus, Scott Richard Clark

Master's Theses

Patterns of piscine prey selection and habitat usage of Esox americanus were assessed through a series of field and experimental studies. Although few detailed studies exist on the foraging behavior and habitat usage of E. americanus, throughout its range it may be an important trophic component in maintaining fish assemblage structure in many lower order streams. Across 17 sampled streams, the presence of E. americanus among reaches within streams was found to be strongly correlated with increasing levels of habitat complexity. Reaches occupied by E. americanus featured increased amounts of in-stream physical structure, increased variability in stream width and …

An Extensionalist Approach To Ontological Commitment: Why Quine Is Mostly Right, William Felix Suttle Iii Aug 2011

An Extensionalist Approach To Ontological Commitment: Why Quine Is Mostly Right, William Felix Suttle Iii

Master's Theses

A criterion of ontological commitment is a formal method for determining what objects or entities a theory says exists. The most famous criterion of ontological commitment was developed by W.V.O. Quine. However, Quine's criterion has been attacked for presumably not meeting his own standards for an acceptable theory. After explaining the motivation and details of Quine's criterion, I will tum to the prominent objections against his theory. I will argue that there are problems both with Quine's formulation of his criterion, as well as the interpretation of Quine's criterion as presented by his objectors. In response to these issues, I …

The Role Of Moral Exemplars In Stanley Hauer's Ethics, Timothy William Walker Aug 2011

The Role Of Moral Exemplars In Stanley Hauer's Ethics, Timothy William Walker

Master's Theses

This thesis is on the virtue ethics of Stanley Hauerwas, with particular focus on the role of moral exemplars in his theory. Hauerwas emphasizes the role of what are called "moral exemplars" in his virtue ethics. These are people or characters of narratives that best exemplify virtue. A theory is exemplarist if the moral concepts of the theory are defined in reference to an exemplary person, moral knowledge is gained from knowledge of an exemplar, and moral exemplars are necessary for one's learning to be moral. This definition reflects the three types of roles exemplars could play in a moral …

Rethinking The Rural-Urban Divide In China’S New Stratification Order, Qian Forrest Zhang Aug 2011

Rethinking The Rural-Urban Divide In China’S New Stratification Order, Qian Forrest Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

I use a Marxist framework centred on the mode of production to conceptually analyze the changing stratification structure in today’s China with a focus on the changing nature of rural-urban inequality. As the state-managed tributary mode of production, once dominant under socialism, is being gradually eclipsed by the reviving petty-commodity mode of production and the newly emerged capitalist mode of production, both of which are market-based and enable the transfer of surplus from labour to capital, a new set of mechanisms are creating and sustaining rural-urban inequality in China. Rural-urban inequality – although still significant in its magnitude – is …

The Colorado Community Organizing Collaborative: A Critical Realist Case Study, Shawna M. Margesson Aug 2011

The Colorado Community Organizing Collaborative: A Critical Realist Case Study, Shawna M. Margesson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized the ontological and epistemological foundations of critical realism posed by Margaret Archer (2000) to deepen social work's understanding of collaboration. Through the use of Danermark et al.'s (2002) stages of explanatory research based on critical realism, the author found that agential and structural interactions of the Colorado Community Organizing Collaborative emerged. These findings illustrate that critical realism can be used in social work research to broaden the discipline's perception of human and environment. Archer's (2000) grounding of agency in three orders of reality, that practice is pivotal and morphogenesis is transformative aids in rediscovering how structure constrains …

The Relationship Factor: Understanding The Role And Development Of Teacher-Student Relationships In Middle School, Tracy Davis Sands Aug 2011

The Relationship Factor: Understanding The Role And Development Of Teacher-Student Relationships In Middle School, Tracy Davis Sands

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explain the process by which relationships evolve between teachers and students in a suburban East Tennessee middle school. Based on the assumption that "knowledge is created through action and interaction" (Corbin & Strauss, 2008, p. 2), this study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the relationships between middle school teachers and their students. A grounded theory approach (see Corbin & Strauss, 2008) was used to collect and analyze data, with the purpose of generating a theory that explains the phenomena. Because the study was driven by teachers' and students' voices, …

Differential Expression Of Voltage-Gated K+ Currents In Medial Septum/Diagonal Band Complex Neurons Exhibiting Distinct Firing Phenotypes, Emilio R. Garrido-Sanabria, Miriam G. Perez-Cordova, Luis V. Colom Aug 2011

Differential Expression Of Voltage-Gated K+ Currents In Medial Septum/Diagonal Band Complex Neurons Exhibiting Distinct Firing Phenotypes, Emilio R. Garrido-Sanabria, Miriam G. Perez-Cordova, Luis V. Colom

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

The medial septum/diagonal band complex (MSDB) controls hippocampal excitability, rhythms and plastic processes. Medial septal neuronal populations display heterogeneous firing patterns. In addition, some of these populations degenerate during age-related disorders (e.g. cholinergic neurons). Thus, it is particularly important to examine the intrinsic properties of theses neurons in order to create new agents that effectively modulate hippocampal excitability and enhance memory processes. Here, we have examined the properties of voltage-gated, K+ currents in electrophysiologically-identified neurons. These neurons were taken from young rat brain slices containing the MS/DB complex. Whole-cell, patch recordings of outward currents were obtained from slow firing, fast-spiking, …

Reactive Oxygen Species And The Regulation Of Hyperproliferation In A Colonial Hydroid, Neil W. Blackstone, Katherine L. Harmata Aug 2011

Reactive Oxygen Species And The Regulation Of Hyperproliferation In A Colonial Hydroid, Neil W. Blackstone, Katherine L. Harmata

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Colonies of Podocoryna carnea circulate gastrovascular fluid among polyps via tubelike stolons. At polyp-stolon junctions, mitochondrion-rich cells in part regulate this gastrovascular flow. During competition, colonies hyperproliferate nematocytes and stolons; nematocysts are discharged until one colony is killed. Hyperproliferation then ceases, and normal growth resumes. Here, competing colonies were treated with azide, which inhibits respiration and upregulates reactive oxygen species (ROS). After the cessation of competition, azide-treated colonies continued to hyperproliferate. In azide-treated competing colonies, however, mitochondrion-rich cells were found to produce similar amounts of ROS as those in untreated competing colonies. Subsequent experiments showed that both azide treatment and …

Role Of Nitric Oxide And Flavohemoglobin Homolog Genes In Aspergillus Nidulans Sexual Development And Mycotoxin Production, Ana M. Calvo, W. Scott Grayburn, Jeffrey W. Cary, Sachin Baidya Aug 2011

Role Of Nitric Oxide And Flavohemoglobin Homolog Genes In Aspergillus Nidulans Sexual Development And Mycotoxin Production, Ana M. Calvo, W. Scott Grayburn, Jeffrey W. Cary, Sachin Baidya

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Flavohemoglobins are widely distributed in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. These proteins are involved in reducing nitric oxide levels. Deletion of the Aspergillus nidulans flavohemoglobin gene fhbA induced sexual development and decreased sterigmatocystin production. Supplementation with a nitric oxide-releasing compound promoted cleistothecial formation and increased nsdD and steA expression, indicating that nitric oxide induces sexual development. This is the first study on the effect of nitric oxide on morphogenesis and secondary metabolism in fungi.

Spatio-Temporal Patterns And Nutrient Status Of Macroalgae In A Heavily Managed Region Of Biscayne Bay, Florida, Usa, Ligia Collado-Vides, Viviana Mazzei, Travis Thyberg, Diego Lirman Aug 2011

Spatio-Temporal Patterns And Nutrient Status Of Macroalgae In A Heavily Managed Region Of Biscayne Bay, Florida, Usa, Ligia Collado-Vides, Viviana Mazzei, Travis Thyberg, Diego Lirman

Faculty Publications

The coastal bays of South Florida are located downstream of the Florida Everglades, where a comprehensive restoration plan will strongly impact the hydrology of the region. Submerged aquatic vegetation communities are common components of benthic habitats of Biscayne Bay, and will be directly affected by changes in water quality. This study explores community structure, spatio-temporal dynamics, and tissue nutrient content of macroalgae to detect and describe relationships with water quality. The macroalgal community responded to strong variability in salinity; three distinctive macroalgal assemblages were correlated with salinity as follows: (1) low-salinity, dominated by Chara hor-nemannii and a mix of filamentous …

Determining The Roles Of Dendritic Cells And Icam-1 In The Transpresentation Of Il-15 To Cd8 T Cells, Spencer W. Stonier Aug 2011

Determining The Roles Of Dendritic Cells And Icam-1 In The Transpresentation Of Il-15 To Cd8 T Cells, Spencer W. Stonier

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The maintenance and generation of memory CD8 T cells is dependent on the cytokine IL-15. IL-15 is delivered by a novel mechanism termed transpresentation: IL-15 is presented by a cell expressing IL-15Ralpha to the CD8 T cell which responds via IL-2Rbeta/gammac. The identity of what cells transpresent IL-15 to support the survival and homeostatic proliferation of memory CD8 T cells is unknown. Using a transgenic mouse model that limits IL-15 transpresentation to DCs, I have demonstrated that DCs transpresent IL-15 to CD8 T cells. DCs transpresent IL-15 to CD8 T cells during the contraction of an immune response …

The Role Of The Androgen Receptor Cofactor P44/Wdr77 In Astrocyte Activation, Bryce H. Vincent Aug 2011

The Role Of The Androgen Receptor Cofactor P44/Wdr77 In Astrocyte Activation, Bryce H. Vincent

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Astrogliosis is induced by neuronal damage and is also a pathological feature of the major aging-related neurodegenerative disorders. The mechanisms that control the cascade of astrogliosis have not been well established. In a previous study, we identified a novel androgen receptor (AR)-interacting protein (p44/WDR77) and found that it plays a critical role in the control of proliferation and differentiation of prostate epithelial cells. In the present study, we found that deletion of the p44 gene in the mouse brain caused accelerated aging with dramatic astrogliosis. The p44/WDR77 is expressed in astrocytes and loss of p44/WDR77 expression in astrocytes leads to …

The Role Of Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts In Lung Tumorigenesis, Jonathon D. Roybal Aug 2011

The Role Of Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts In Lung Tumorigenesis, Jonathon D. Roybal

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The extracellular milieu is rich in growth factors that drive tumor progression, but the mechanisms that govern tumor cell sensitivity to those ligands have notbeen fully defined. In this study, we address this question in mice that developmetastatic lung adenocarcinomas through the suppression of the microRNA-200 (miR-200) family. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) enhance tumorgrowth and invasion by secreting VEGF-A that binds to VEGFR1, a processrequired for tumor growth and metastasis in mice and correlated with a poorprognosis in lung adenocarcinoma patients. In this study, we discovered thatmiR-200 blocked CAF-induced tumor cell invasion by directly targetingVEGFR1 in tumor cells. In the context of …

Role Of Prostaglandin E2 In The Regulation Of Pancreatic Stellate Cells Hyper Activity Associated With Pancreatic Cancer, Chantale Charo Aug 2011

Role Of Prostaglandin E2 In The Regulation Of Pancreatic Stellate Cells Hyper Activity Associated With Pancreatic Cancer, Chantale Charo

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal type of cancer due to its high metastasis rate and resistance to chemotherapy. Pancreatic fibrosis is a constant pathological feature of chronic pancreatitis and the hyperactive stroma associated with pancreatic cancer. Strong evidence supports an important role of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and COX-2 generated prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) during pancreatic fibrosis. Pancreatic stellate cells (PSC) are the predominant source of extracellular matrix production (ECM), thus being the key players in both diseases. Given this background, the primary objective is to delineate the role of PGE2 on human pancreatic stellate cells (PSC) hyper activation associated …

The Role Of Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor And Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 4 In High Grade Serous Carcinoma, Tarrik Zaid Aug 2011

The Role Of Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor And Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 4 In High Grade Serous Carcinoma, Tarrik Zaid

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Background: High grade serous carcinoma whether ovarian, tubal or primary peritoneal, continues to be the most lethal gynecologic malignancy in the USA. Although combination chemotherapy and aggressive surgical resection has improved survival in the past decade the majority of patients still succumb to chemo-resistant disease recurrence. It has recently been reported that amplification of 5q31-5q35.3 is associated with poor prognosis in patients with high grade serous ovarian carcinoma. Although the amplicon contains over 50 genes, it is notable for the presence of several members of the fibroblast growth factor signaling axis. In particular acidic fibroblast growth factor (FGF1) …

Echogenic Liposomes For Nitric Oxide Delivery And Breast Cancer Treatment, Soo Yeon Lee Female Aug 2011

Echogenic Liposomes For Nitric Oxide Delivery And Breast Cancer Treatment, Soo Yeon Lee Female

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Liposomes, also known as nontoxic, biodegradable, and non-immunogenic therapeutic delivery vehicles, have been proposed as a carrier for drugs and antitumor agents in cancer chemotherapy. Echogenic liposomes (ELIP) have the potential to entrap air or bioactive gas to enhance acoustic reflectivity in ultrasound and are used as a contrast agent. The innovative part of this study is based on a novel concept to encapsulate nitric oxide (NO) gas into ELIP, deliver it to breast cancer cells, and control its release via direct ultrasound exposure. Studies on the effect of NO in tumor biology have shown that a high levels of …
