An Adaptive Ensemble Learner Function Via Bagging And Rank Aggregation With Applications To High Dimensional Data., Jasmit Sureshkumar Shah
An Adaptive Ensemble Learner Function Via Bagging And Rank Aggregation With Applications To High Dimensional Data., Jasmit Sureshkumar Shah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An ensemble consists of a set of individual predictors whose predictions are combined. Generally, different classification and regression models tend to work well for different types of data and also, it is usually not know which algorithm will be optimal in any given application. In this thesis an ensemble regression function is presented which is adapted from Datta et al. 2010. The ensemble function is constructed by combining bagging and rank aggregation that is capable of changing its performance depending on the type of data that is being used. In the classification approach, the results can be optimized with respect …
Alleviating Equines: Investigating The Hypothesized Mechanisms Of Change In Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Kathy L. Korell-Rach
Alleviating Equines: Investigating The Hypothesized Mechanisms Of Change In Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Kathy L. Korell-Rach
Theses and Dissertations
Animal Assisted Therapy research was integrated to develop the Tri-Level Mechanisms of Change (TLMC) Conceptualization, which is a comprehensive theoretical framework hypothesizing how Equine Assisted Psychotherapy produces psychological change. TLMC hypothesizes that the strength of human animal bond (HAB) with personal pets accounts for the development of HAB with therapy horses (primary level). The quality of HAB with therapy horses is responsible for producing changes in general psychological constructs (secondary level). Adaptive changes in secondary level constructs account for reductions in mental illness symptoms (tertiary level). Results indicated a significant reduction in tertiary level symptoms, and gains were maintained at …
Gata-Family Transcription Factors In Magnaporthe Oryzae, Cristian F. Quispe
Gata-Family Transcription Factors In Magnaporthe Oryzae, Cristian F. Quispe
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The filamentous fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, responsible for blast rice disease, destroys around 10-30% of the rice crop annually. Infection begins when the specialized infection structure, the appressorium, generates enormous internal turgor pressure through the accumulation of glycerol. This turgor acts on a penetration peg emerging at the base of the cell, causing it to breach the leaf surface allowing its infection.
The enzyme trehalose-6- phosphate synthase (Tps1) is a central regulator of the transition from appressorium development to infectious hyphal growth. In the first chapter we show that initiation of rice blast disease requires a regulatory mechanism involving an …

Variable Helper Effects, Ecological Conditions, And The Evolution Of Cooperative Breeding In The Acorn Woodpecker, Walter D. Koenig, Eric L. Walters, Joseph Haydock
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The ecological conditions leading to delayed dispersal and helping behavior are generally thought to follow one of two contrasting scenarios: that conditions are stable and predictable, resulting in young being ecologically forced to remain as helpers (extrinsic constraints and the habitat saturation hypothesis), or that conditions are highly variable and unpredictable, leading to the need for helpers to raise young, at least when conditions are poor (intrinsic constraints and the hard life hypothesis). We investigated how variability in ecological conditions influences the degree to which helpers augment breeder fitness in the cooperatively breeding acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus), a …
Implicit Beliefs About Writing: A Task-Specific Study Of Implicit Beliefs, Kyle R. Perry
Implicit Beliefs About Writing: A Task-Specific Study Of Implicit Beliefs, Kyle R. Perry
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study investigated students’ implicit beliefs about a writing task. Implicit beliefs are defined as the unconscious cognitive constructs that influence motivation, behavior, and affect (Bruning, Dempsey, Kauffman, & Zumbrunn, 2011). Studies regarding implicit beliefs are applied to many constructs, ranging in specificity from domain-general beliefs such as epistemological beliefs (Schommer, 1990) to domain-specific beliefs such as reading (Schraw & Bruning, 1999). In the present study, implicit beliefs about a specific writing task are compared to implicit beliefs about intelligence, demographic information, and participants’ educational background experiences. Research is reviewed pertaining to a variety of studies of implicit beliefs. One …

Factors That Facilitate Or Inhibit Interest Of Domestic Students In The Engineering Phd: A Mixed Methods Study, Michelle C. Howell Smith
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Given the increasing complexity of technology in our society, the United States has a growing demand for a more highly educated technical workforce. Unfortunately, the proportion of United States citizens earning a PhD in engineering has been declining and there is concern about meeting the economic, national security and quality of life needs of our country.
This mixed methods sequential exploratory instrument design study identified factors that facilitate or inhibit interest in engineering PhD programs among domestic engineering undergraduate students in the United States. This study developed a testable theory for how domestic students become interested in engineering PhD programs …
Gentility And The Canon Under Siege: Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, Violence, And Contemporary Adaptations Of Jane Austen, Elisabeth Chretien
Gentility And The Canon Under Siege: Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, Violence, And Contemporary Adaptations Of Jane Austen, Elisabeth Chretien
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis examines the canonical literature/monster mash-up subgenre, focusing specifically on its originating text, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, as a case study to explore and understand the cultural work being done in this subgenre. This thesis argues that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and other texts like it are a form of vital and original popular postmodern interaction with and appropriation of the existing literary canon. As a whole, this subgenre re-imagines the English and American literary canon and heritage, providing new or alternative ways for readers to relate to and understand it. While many reviewers, scholars, and …

Grapes are an important source of bioactive compounds such as gallic acid, resveratrol, and catechin. The consumption of grapes is associated with a lower risk of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancer. Grape pomace and skins are good sources of many phytochemicals known for their antioxidant potential.
In this research, the peel of the Chilean “Flame” grape cultivar and the pomace of St. Croix, Frontenac and St. Pepin grape cultivars were subjected to a pulsed electric field (5 KV, 1 μFarad, 20 Pulses) and to an enzymatic treatment (Pectinase, 5KU). The total phenolic content, determined in …
Breeding Fidelity And Landscape Effects On Distribution Of Mallards And Duck Broods In The Nebraska Sandhills, Zachary J. Cunningham
Breeding Fidelity And Landscape Effects On Distribution Of Mallards And Duck Broods In The Nebraska Sandhills, Zachary J. Cunningham
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
I investigated aspects of mallard (Anas platyrhnchos) breeding ecology in the Nebraska Sandhills during 2007-2008. Previous work in this region suggests that nest success is low for a large area of intact grassland such as the Sandhills. My goal was to conduct a local-scale examination of age distribution and return rates of mallards, and a large-scale examination of brood distribution in the Sandhills region as a whole. This information will help explain factors contributing to the low nest success previously observed, determine relationships between landscape composition and spatial distribution of waterfowl in the Sandhills, and predict productivity and …
Avian Influenza In Migratory Birds In The United States, 2007–2009, And Effects Of September Hunting Seasons On Survival, Harvest, And Recovery Rates Of Canada Geese Banded In Southeast Nebraska, Scott R. Groepper
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Highly-pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV H5N1) poses risks to wild birds, poultry, and humans. Personnel with the United States Department of Agriculture-Animal Plant Health Inspection Service-Wildlife Services, state, and tribal wildlife agencies collected 168,940 samples from migratory birds from 2007 to 2009 to test for presence of HPAIV H5N1. No HPAIV was found, but other subtypes were discovered, including H5 and H7. I estimated prevalence of avian influenza virus by flyway and found prevalence was lowest each year in the Atlantic Flyway (6.7%–8.3%), highest in the Pacific Flyway in 2007 (13.3%) and 2008 (13.4%), and highest in the Mississippi Flyway …
Using Slow-Release Permanganate To Remove Tce From A Low Permeable Aquifer At A Former Landfill, Mark D. Christenson
Using Slow-Release Permanganate To Remove Tce From A Low Permeable Aquifer At A Former Landfill, Mark D. Christenson
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Past disposal of industrial solvents into unregulated landfills is a significant source of groundwater contamination. In 2009, we began investigating a former unregulated landfill with known trichloroethene (TCE) contamination. Our objective was to pinpoint the location of the plume and treat the TCE using in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). We accomplished this by using electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) to survey the landfill and map the subsurface lithology. We then used the ERI maps to guide direct push groundwater sampling. A TCE plume (100-600 µg L-1) was identified in a low permeable silty-clay aquifer (Kh = 0.5 m …
Effects Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In The Human Holocarboxylase Synthetase Gene On Catalytic Activity, Shingo Esaki
Effects Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In The Human Holocarboxylase Synthetase Gene On Catalytic Activity, Shingo Esaki
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Holocarboxylase synthetase (HCS) catalyzes the covalent binding of biotin to carboxylases and histones in eukaryotic cells. Biotinylated carboxylases play essential roles in the metabolism of fatty acids, amino acids, and glucose; biotinylated histones play essential roles in gene regulation and genome stability. HCS null individuals are not viable whereas HCS deficiency is linked to developmental delays and phenotypes such as short life span and low stress resistance. Greater than 2,500 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been reported for HCS, but the biological importance of these polymorphisms is unknown. We hypothesized that some of these SNPs impair catalytic activity and that …
High Yield Synthesis Of Positron Emission Tomography Ligands For Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor Imaging, Saraanne E. Hitchcock
High Yield Synthesis Of Positron Emission Tomography Ligands For Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor Imaging, Saraanne E. Hitchcock
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a powerful and non-invasive imaging technique used for human and animal organ imaging. Currently, the market for PET is project to reach $5.4 billion per year by 2015.5 This research focuses on the direct incorporation of [18F]-fluoride into PET ligands. The widespread use of PET imaging is currently frustrated, in part, by the lack of efficient fluorination chemistry.
Glutamate, one of the 20 most abundant naturally occurring amino acids, serves as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Glutamate functions in this capacity by binding to ionotropic and metabotropic receptors. Metabotropic receptors are Gcoupled proteins …

HIM 1990-2015
The MS-818 compound is used in the proliferation process of neuronal cells and many biological activities that accompany this process such as astrocyte differentiation, inhibition of neuronal apoptosis, and fraction repairs. We do know the effects of this compound, but the mechanism of action remained uncertain until now. To determine the pathway of this compound, NT2 cells were cultured and lysed to isolate the proteins. Affinity Chromatography was performed in order to immobilize the MS-818 compound to a Hi-Trap NHS column. The NT2 protein sample was injected through the column and eluted with a MS-818 concentrated, high salt content elution …
Moral Cognition In Children An Examination Of The Possible Impact Of School Didactic Philosophies, Smit S. Shah
Moral Cognition In Children An Examination Of The Possible Impact Of School Didactic Philosophies, Smit S. Shah
HIM 1990-2015
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects that Montessori and public school environments have on the moral cognition of children and to assess the differences using modified moral dilemma stories. Through the analysis of these children's responses on moral dilemma stories this thesis reveals that there are stark and statistically significant differences in the children's responses on two of the three stories. The Montessori children scored higher on the morality level and the answers reflected altruism over authority on story one and story three. Through these results the researcher surmised that school environment can have an impact …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Various quaternary CuInxGa1-xS2 (0≤x≤1) chalcopyrite nanoparticles have been prepared from molecular single-source precursors via microwave decomposition. We were able to control the nanoparticle size, phase, stoichiometry, and solubility. Depending on the choice of surface modifiers used, we were able to tune the solubility of the resulting nanoparticles. This method has been used to generate up to 5g of nanoparticles and up to 150g from multiple batch reactions with excellent reproducibility. Data from UV-Vis, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, TEM, DSC/TGA-MS, and ICP-OES analyses have shown high reproducibility in nanoparticle size, composition, and bandgap.
Depressed Native Americans And Suicidal Ideation Contagion, Jeri Ann Azure
Depressed Native Americans And Suicidal Ideation Contagion, Jeri Ann Azure
Theses and Dissertations
Screening for suicide ideation has been widely established as an effective strategy to identify and treat depression symptomology and suicidality (ideation, attempts, and completions), particularly within vulnerable populations such as Native Americans, where the rates of these problems exceed that of other ethnic minority groups. Findings from global research has suggested that symptoms of depression increase vulnerability to self-harm among individuals exposed to the suicide attempts of others within their family or social network. Group membership appears to increase the likelihood that the individual will acquire both the adaptive and maladaptive beliefs and proclivities of the desired group.

Community Affair: Social Inclusion And Swapping, Jowanza Joseph
Student Works
Swapping has become primitive economic behavior with the advent of currency. However, with the increase in concern about the environment swapping has emerged in many forums including swap meets, free cycle and online swapping forums. We perform an exploratory investigation of this behavior through an imperial investigation of Twitter. We test the connectedness, and the popularity of people who are involved in swap meets and farmers markets. Finally, we discuss the implications and future directions for swapping.
Gait Variability Of Patients With Intermittent Claudication Is Similar Before And After The Onset Of Claudication Pain, Sara A. Myers, Iraklis Pipinos, Jason Johanning, Nikolaos Stergiou
Gait Variability Of Patients With Intermittent Claudication Is Similar Before And After The Onset Of Claudication Pain, Sara A. Myers, Iraklis Pipinos, Jason Johanning, Nikolaos Stergiou
Journal Articles
Background
Recent research demonstrated that intermittent claudication patients have increased gait variability prior to the onset of claudication. However, it is unknown if these patients experience additional gait adaptations after the onset of claudication. Thus, we sought to determine how gait variability is affected by claudication in an effort to contribute to improved clinical management.
Methods
Twenty-six intermittent claudication patients and 20 controls walked on a treadmill at self-selected speed; intermittent claudication patients were tested before (pain free) and after (pain) the onset of claudication. Variability of the ankle, knee, and hip joint angles was assessed using the largest Lyapunov …
Cognitive Processes For Infering Tonic, Steven J. Kaup
Cognitive Processes For Infering Tonic, Steven J. Kaup
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Research concerning cognitive processes for tonic inference is diverse involving approaches from several different perspectives. Outwardly, the ability to infer tonic seems fundamentally simple; yet it cannot be attributed to any single cognitive process, but is multi-faceted, engaging complex elements of the brain. This study will examine past research concerning tonic inference in light of current findings. First I will survey the recent history of experimental research in cognitive functions for memory retention and expectation as they relate to the recognition and learning of musical schemas. Then I will discuss distributional theories associated with the tonal hierarchy of major and …
The Evolution And Development Of Wing Form, Body Size And Flight In Large- And Small-Bodied Fruit Bats (Artibeus Jamaicensis And Carollia Perspiciillata), Jason B. Shaw
Dissertations
Differences in developmental patterns important to diversification are produced through heritable variation of the onset/offset and timing of juvenile growth. As the size and shape of an organism changes during ontogeny, morphological, and behavioral components must adjust to accommodate proper function. This study explored the ontogenetic pathways of two closely related Phyllostomids differing in flight ability, body size, life history strategies, and developmental state at birth. We hypothesized that Artibeus jamaicensis and Carollia perspicillata will show ontogenetic differences that account for the diversification of morphological, body size, and behavioral patterns. Comparisons between the two species‟ flight development, growth rates, and …

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia. The pathology in the central nervous system (CNS) impairs memory and cognition, hindering the capabilities and the quality of life of the individual. This project continues studying the role of infection and Alzheimer’s disease and contributes to the overall understanding of the possible causes of this disease. In this study, BALB/c mice were infected, via direct intracranial injection, with a respiratory isolate (AR-39) of Chlamydia pneumoniae. Their brains were analyzed at 7 and 14 days post-infection, using immunohistochemistry, for the presence of C. …
