Self-Expansion As A Predictor Of Attention To Alternative Romantic Partners, Irene Tsapelas
Self-Expansion As A Predictor Of Attention To Alternative Romantic Partners, Irene Tsapelas
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Focusing on attractive alternative partners when one is already in an established relationship can lead to several negative outcomes, including infidelity and relationship dissolution. The extent to which individuals attend to and remember such alternatives, however, may be affected by various factors within the relationship, including love for the partner, commitment to the relationship, and self-expansion in the relationship. This research examined the role of such relationship factors in predicting cognitive processes associated with attractive alternatives. Specifically, two studies tested hypotheses derived from the self-expansion model of close relationships (e.g, Aron et al. | 2000) that predict key factors associated …
Probabilistic And Flux Landscapes Of The Phage $\Lambda$ Genetic Switch, Nathan Andrew Borggren
Probabilistic And Flux Landscapes Of The Phage $\Lambda$ Genetic Switch, Nathan Andrew Borggren
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The $lambda$ phage infection of an textit{E. coli} cell has become a paradigm for understanding the molecular processes involved in gene expression and signaling within a cell. This system provides an example of a genetic switch, as cells with identical DNA choose either of two cell cycles: a lysogenic cycle, in which the phage genome is incorporated into the host and copied by the host; or a lytic cycle, resulting in the death of the cell and a burst of viruses. The robustness of this switch is remarkable; although the first stages of the lysogenic and lytic cycles are identical, …

Analysis Of The Hemichannel Properties Of Cx26 Mutants Causing Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness Syndrome, Pallavi Mhaske
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness (KID) Syndrome has been linked with various mutations of the Cx26 encoding GJB2 (Gap Junction beta2) gene. Each mutation was associated with symptoms and severity of varying degree in both adult and neonatal patients. Here, the hemichannel activity of two recently discovered mutations of GJB2 - the A88V and D50A mutants found in patients of KID syndrome were examined using Xenopus oocytes. The data recordings show that while the oocytes were able to express both the wild type and mutant Cx26 genes, the hemichannel activity of the mutants was much greater. This increase in hemichannel activity led to the …

Hostility is associated with a number of metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including waist—hip ratio, glucose, and triglycerides. Along with hostility, many of these measures have also been shown to be associated with reduced central serotonergic function. We have previously reported that a citalopram intervention was successful in reducing hostility by self-report assessment (Kamarck et al., 2009). Here we examine the effects of this serotonergic intervention on metabolic risk factors in the same sample.

Identifying Drug-Seeking Behaviors In The Emergency Department, Randi M. Bush Burman
Identifying Drug-Seeking Behaviors In The Emergency Department, Randi M. Bush Burman
HIM 1990-2015
Pain is the leading cause of Emergency Department (ED) visits making it one of the primary concerns of the emergency medical field. The experience of pain is subjective and unique to every individual making it difficult to effectively manage. As a result, the subjective nature of pain is also commonly associated with drug-seekers often claiming to have pain simply to receive narcotics to support their addiction. There have been numerous studies completed to determine how to effectively recognize drug-seeking. This integrative literature review will identify the common behaviors that have been seen as indicators of drug-seeking in the ED. The …
The Role Of Curcumin In Response To Bpde-Induced Dna Damage In Human Lung Epithelial Cells., Erica Nicole Rogers
The Role Of Curcumin In Response To Bpde-Induced Dna Damage In Human Lung Epithelial Cells., Erica Nicole Rogers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Long-term exposure to harmful carcinogens like benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) are linked to lung cancer. Benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide (BPDE), the ultimate carcinogen produced by BaP bioactivation, is believed to play an important role in lung carcinogenesis. The tumor suppressor protein is p53 signals cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, and apoptosis in response to BPDE-induced damage. However, physiological exposure to BPDE fails to activate p53. Although the bioactive principle of turmeric spice, curcumin, shows promising effects against BPDE-induced carcinogenesis, its exact mode of action remains unclear. Therefore the aim of this dissertation was to investigate whether curcumin prevents BPDE-induced DNA damage by regulating …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a cross-cultural analysis of France and Great Britain during both the First World War and World War II in which Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf redefined "woman." Utilizing New Historicism, the first chapter begins with a focus on the evolution of the two cultures from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century France and Great Britain and discusses the ways in which the women's movement was both perpetuated and hindered by the volatile political and cultural climates of these two countries. The second chapter discusses the traditional woman as she was viewed in both French and British …
Examining The Relationship Between College Football Season Ticket Holders' Service Personal Values And Their Behavioral Intentions : The Moderating Effect Of Team Identification., Gary Peng-Liang Tan
Examining The Relationship Between College Football Season Ticket Holders' Service Personal Values And Their Behavioral Intentions : The Moderating Effect Of Team Identification., Gary Peng-Liang Tan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recently, some college football programs have experienced unsustainable attendance growth, increases in revenue discrepancies, stagnant "revenue growth", and increased operating costs (Brown, 2009; Fulks, 2009; Fullerton & Morgan, 2009; Jackson, 2005; NCAA, 2009, 2010). These problems can be examined from customer service, social identification, and consumer behavior perspectives (Curtin, 1982; Katona, 1974; Wann & Branscombe, 1993; Zeithaml, 1988). This study's research purposes are to understand service personal values antecedents and outcomes, and team identification's moderating effect on the relationship between service personal values, and both consumption satisfaction perceptions and behavioral outcomes. A sample of college football season ticket holders at …
The Effect Of Tissue Damage And Inflammation On Gene Expression In Sensory Neurons., Sean Anthony Trusty 1984-
The Effect Of Tissue Damage And Inflammation On Gene Expression In Sensory Neurons., Sean Anthony Trusty 1984-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of tissue damage and inflammation on the expression in sensory neurons of P2X3, a gene that has a role in nociception and sensing bladder distension, which is regulated by nerve injury. Tissue damage induces expression of ATF3, an indicator of injury, in sensory neurons. Animals were exposed to different types of tissue damage including single and repeated skin incision, bladder incision and a spinal cord injury with bladder inflammation. P2X3 was regulated differentially between conditions of single and repeated skin incision. One condition that involves repeated tissue damage and alteration of bladder function is spinal …
Teacher-Student Relationships During Adolescence : The Role Of Parental Involvement, Behavioral Characteristics, Gender, And Income., Amanda Jeane Wyrick
Teacher-Student Relationships During Adolescence : The Role Of Parental Involvement, Behavioral Characteristics, Gender, And Income., Amanda Jeane Wyrick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation provides an examination of contributing factors to high quality teacher-student relationships during adolescence. High quality teacher-student relationships have been linked to better academic, emotional, and social functioning for students in elementary, middle, and high school. While the importance of teacher-student relationships is well documented, less is known about contributors to the relationship, especially during adolescence. Previous research has identified that in younger populations a student's gender, income, behavioral characteristics, and parental involvement can influence the nature of the teacher-student relationship. This dissertation provides an important extension of contributing factors into the adolescent age group, where teacher-student relationships offer …
Consistency Of Differentially Expressed Gene Rankings Based On Subsets Of Microarray Data., Dake Yang
Consistency Of Differentially Expressed Gene Rankings Based On Subsets Of Microarray Data., Dake Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Data derived from gene expression microarrays are frequently used to identify candidate genes which can characterize and distinguish between two biological phenotypes. A key step in this process is the selection of an appropriate test statistic to identify which genes are differentially expressed between the two tissues. Although many methods have been explicitly developed for this purpose, the traditional (-test still remains a popular choice. In this study, we evaluate the empirical impact of choice of test-statistic on the resulting list of differentially expressed genes, in particular when the available sample size is small. We evaluated several different methods for …
Evaluation Of Methods For Analyzing Gene-Gene Interaction Data For Survival Outcomes., Jie Zhang
Evaluation Of Methods For Analyzing Gene-Gene Interaction Data For Survival Outcomes., Jie Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, a number of computational and statistical problems for identifying SNP-SNP interactions in high dimensional survival data have been studied, and several data mining approaches have been proposed. However, the relative performance of these methods to detect SNP-SNP interactions has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we directly compared the performance of the four techniques to detect gene-gene interactions in a recently conducted study of genetic polymorphisms associated with breast cancer survival and recurrence. Four methods were evaluated for their ability to detect SNP-SNP interactions: Survival Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction, Cox regression with LJ (Lasso) and LJ-L2 (Elastic …
Sleep/Wake Activity And Energy Expenditure In Overweight And Obese Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients : A Pre- And Post-Cpap Comparison., Pamela A. Mccullough
Sleep/Wake Activity And Energy Expenditure In Overweight And Obese Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients : A Pre- And Post-Cpap Comparison., Pamela A. Mccullough
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Overweight and obesity is a major contributing factor in an estimated 70% of all obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cases. Approximately five percent of the adult population has OSA, and the numbers continue to soar with the rising prevalence of obesity. As a primary therapy, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has demonstrated improvement in many comorbidities associated with both OSA and obesity. Although anecdotal and clinical references support increased energy, activity, and weight loss as a potential benefit of CP AP treatment, there remains little evidence to endorse CP AP as a significant weight-reduction measure for overweight and obese OSA patients. …
Functional Analysis Of N-Acetyltransferase (Nat1*14b And Nat1*10) In Complete Natb And Nata Mrna., Lori Michele Millner
Functional Analysis Of N-Acetyltransferase (Nat1*14b And Nat1*10) In Complete Natb And Nata Mrna., Lori Michele Millner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
N-acetyltransferase 1 (NAT1) is a phase II metabolic enzyme responsible for the biotransformation of aromatic and heterocyclic amine carcinogens such as 4-aminobiphenyl (ASP). NAT1 catalyzes N-acetylation of arylamines as well as the 0-acetylation of N-hydroxylated arylamines. 0-acetylation leads to the formation of electrophilic intermediates that result in DNA adducts and mutations. NAT1 is transcribed from a major promoter, NATb, and an alternative promoter, NATa, resulting in mRNAs with distinct 5'-untranslated regions (UTR). NATa mRNA is expressed primarily in the kidney, liver, trachea and lung while NATb mRNA has been detected in all tissues studied. To determine if differences in 5'-UTR …
Regression Methods For Survival And Multistate Models., Farida Mostajabi
Regression Methods For Survival And Multistate Models., Farida Mostajabi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A common research interest in medical, biological, and engineering research is determining whether certain independent variables are correlated with the survival or failure times. Standard statistical techniques cannot usually be applied for failure-time data due to the lack of complete data or in other word, due to censoring. From a statistical perspective, the study of time to event data is even more challenging when further complexities such as high dimensionality or multivariablity is added to the model. In this dissertation, we consider the predicating patient survival from proteomic profile of patient serum using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) data of …
Roles Of 5ht1a Receptor In Cns Neurogenesis And Adam21 In Spinal Cord Injury., Sheila Ann Arnold 1981-
Roles Of 5ht1a Receptor In Cns Neurogenesis And Adam21 In Spinal Cord Injury., Sheila Ann Arnold 1981-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
These studies set out to identify strategies to rescue and repair the adult nervous system. First, we investigated the role of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) in 5HT1A receptor-induced neurogenesis in the rodent brain. Systemic treatment with an agonist, 8-OH-DPAT, increased neurogenesis only in rats and not mice, and only in one of the two neurogenic regions. This increase was not mediated by CNTF. These data suggest that translation of 5HT1A-based studies to human cell replacement therapies should be reconsidered. Secondly, the role of the plasticity-associated metalloprotease ADAM21 after spinal cord injury was investigated by comparing ADAM21-deficient mice to their wildtype …
Development And Evaluation Of Polymeric Implants Of Curcumin For Enhanced Chemopreventive Activity., Shyam Sunder Bansal
Development And Evaluation Of Polymeric Implants Of Curcumin For Enhanced Chemopreventive Activity., Shyam Sunder Bansal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Curcumin, a plant derived compound has shown significant potency against various chronic diseases like cancer in cell culture and animal studies. However, the introduction of this compound into clinical setting is limited by its poor oral bioavailability and thereby requires high doses for efficacy. We hypothesized that localized/systemic delivery of curcumin by polymeric implants can improve its efficacy by bypassing the oral route and by restricting majority of the drug at the tumor site. Therefore, we developed a polymeric implantable drug delivery system using poly (E-caprolactone) as the polymer and optimized it with respect to polymer molecular weight, drug load …

Analysis Of Trauma Symptomology, Trauma-Informed Care, And Student-Teacher Relationships In A Residential Treatment Center For Female Adolescents., Amy Backert Gonshak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although there is a vast body of literature to support multiple positive outcomes related to positive student-teacher relationships, no prior study has investigated student-teacher relationships within the context of a residential treatment center for abused and neglected adolescents, students who theoretically could benefit from this relationship the most. The first goal of this study was to investigate the effects of student trauma symptomology, teacher beliefs about trauma-informed care, and teachers' emotionally supportive behavior in the classroom on student-teacher relationship quality. Results revealed that teacher beliefs about trauma-informed care and student trauma symptomology, particularly as it is related to 'Other-Control,' are …
Profile Of Systemic Treatment With The Antiviral Lectin Griffithsin In Guinea Pigs., Christopher Lynn Barton 1976-
Profile Of Systemic Treatment With The Antiviral Lectin Griffithsin In Guinea Pigs., Christopher Lynn Barton 1976-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Griffithsin (GRFT) is a carbohydrate binding protein derived from the red alga Griffithisia sp. that has been shown to effectively interfere with the cellular attachment and infectivity of a number of viruses, including HIV-1. However, it is currently unknown what impact systemic GRFT administration may have upon a biological system. For initial in vivo testing, we introduced GRFT into guinea pigs (Cavia Parcel/us) via subcutaneous injection. Based on histological, serological, and biochemical data derived from these experiments, GRFT is well tolerated and maintained at physiologically relevant concentrations while retaining its potent antiviral activity. Follow up in vitro testing included a …
Mechanistic Insights Into Copper-Induced Regression Of Heart Hypertrophy., Katherine Bourcy
Mechanistic Insights Into Copper-Induced Regression Of Heart Hypertrophy., Katherine Bourcy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies have shown that copper (Cu) supplementation at physiologically relevant levels reverses cardiac myocyte hypertrophy induced by phenylephrine (PE), and that this effect was VEGF-dependent. Yet, the amount of VEGF in the media was unchanged. However, we observed that Cu caused an increase in the ratio of VEGFR-1:VEGFR-2 as well as an increase in PKG-1 activity. PKG-1 activity is associated with the regression of cardiac myocyte hypertrophy. The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that VEGFR-1 is associated with PKG-1 and their association is involved in Cu induced regression of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Human cardiac myocytes (HCM) in …
Prevention And Treatment Of Lung Cancer By Green Tea Polyphenols., Pengxiao Cao
Prevention And Treatment Of Lung Cancer By Green Tea Polyphenols., Pengxiao Cao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Green tea polyphenols (GTPs) are gaining increasing attention because of their potential anti-tumor effects. However, poor oral bioavailability limits their efficacy in vivo. In this dissertation, two hypotheses were tested: 1) GTPs administered systemically by a sustained release system will circumvent the problem of limited bioavailability and lower the effective dose compared to the traditional oral route, and 2) adjuvant treatment of GTPs with a standard chemotherapeutic agent (e.g. cisplatin) will enhance efficacy of the therapeutic agent. In our lab, a polymeric implant delivery system was developed, in which GTPs were uniformly embedded within a polycaprolactone matrix to provide sustained …
Effect Of Complement C5a In Tumor Progression And The Local Tumor Microenvironment., Lacey Jo Gunn
Effect Of Complement C5a In Tumor Progression And The Local Tumor Microenvironment., Lacey Jo Gunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Monoclonal antibodies directed toward tumor associated antigens are FDA approved anticancer reagents used commonly in the clinic. Administered antibodies initiate tumor cell death through several mechanisms. Improving immune mediated mechanisms, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) may improve treatment success. However, in many tumors, complement activation and propagation is limited by tumor cell overexpression of complement regulatory proteins (CRPs). Thus, introduction of complement components into the tumor, specifically anaphylatoxin C5a, may provide a key strategy to improve existing, approved anti-tumor treatment. Currently the role of C5a in the tumor remains unclear. The receptor for C5a, C5aR, is expressed …
Application Of Microfabrication In Electrochemical Sensing., Susan Carroll
Application Of Microfabrication In Electrochemical Sensing., Susan Carroll
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this work, micro fabrication techniques are explored not only to simplify the production of complex lab on-a-chip devices (LOC), but also micro fabrication will be utilized to create intelligent design features that will enhance an electrochemical sensor's capabilities. First, a low temperature adhesive bonding procedure for LOC glass devices was evaluated for capillary electrophoresis (CE) applications. This low temperature method utilizes UV adhesive to bond the glass microchips under the assistance of a mask aligner. The bonding process was carried out at room temperature in < 30 minutes, and provided a near 100% success rate. Microchips exhibited similar electroosmotic flow, separation characteristics, stable long-term performance, excellent chip-to-chip reproducibility, as their thermally bonded counter parts. This bonding approach required new but easily implemented structural features. In addition to cost effective and reliable fabrication techniques, microchips designed for long-term unattended electrochemical sensing have been evaluated. Specific advantages of the micro fabrication approach include the capability to create an intelligent design containing features such as redundant sensing electrodes, on-chip reference and auxiliary electrodes, and in situ electrode regeneration/calibration. One system targeted involves continuous pH monitoring in drinking water at solid-state iridium oxide electrodes. Microchips utilized consist of a flow-through silicon platform containing patterned gold electrodes onto which iridium oxide was deposited electrochemically. To simulate drinking water detection scenarios, sensors were integrated into a flow system. Elven equivalent pH electrodes where evaluated for electrode-to-electrode reproducibility, long-term drift, and response to expected interfering agents. With on-chip voltage treatment, absolute potentials measured for an electrode array are within ± 4 mY, with identical (±1 mY/pH unit) calibration slopes. This performance level is sustainable over weeks. Sensors for exhaustive coulometry were designed, fabricated and evaluated. Microchips contained thin-film gold working and Ag/AgCI pseudo-reference electrodes. A custom flow cell containing a counter electrode chamber was constructed to integrate the sensor and to create an electrolysis chamber with a fixed volume. Different chip designs were evaluated for reproducibility and longevity using Fe(CN)63-/4- as model analytes. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for a chip (over 42 days) was 5.5% whereas the sensor-to-sensor reproducibility was within 6.3%. A more practical application for utilizing exhaustive coulometry by the determination of free chlorine in drinking water is briefly evaluated. Initially studies will outline the challenges involved by analyzing hypochlorite.

Adenovirus-Induced Cyclin E Activates Cdk2 For Virus Replication., Pei-Hsin Cheng 1983-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human adenoviruses (Ads) can infect and replicate in cells at different cell-cycle stages. Ads with the E1 B55K deletion preferentially replicate in cancer cells and cause oncolysis. Our laboratory has previously shown that the Ad E1 b gene is involved in induction of several cell-cycle regulative genes (Rao, X. et al. Virol. 350:418-28, 2006) and that cyclin E expression is required for efficient viral replication (Zheng, X. et al. J Viral 82:3415-27, 2008). In this study, we sought to investigate the interaction of cyclin E with its partner CDK2 in Ad-infected cells. We show four lines of evidence indicating the …

Background: For more than 10 years, Invisalign has been a treatment alternative to traditional bands and brackets for the treatment of malocclusion. In order to relieve crowding in the dentition, interproximal reduction (IPR) or stripping is often required. Invisalign dictates how much IPR should be done per case. Hypothesis: The hypothesis is that less tooth structure is removed by IPR during treatment than is advocated by Invisalign. Methods: Subjects will be patients from the University of Louisville who were treated with Invisalign. The mesial-distal width of the teeth on pre and post treatment models will be measured and compared against …
Expression Pattern Of Cd2ap In The Intact And Collaterally Sprouting Nervous System., Sarah Elizabeth Claypool Couch 1987-
Expression Pattern Of Cd2ap In The Intact And Collaterally Sprouting Nervous System., Sarah Elizabeth Claypool Couch 1987-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Collateral sprouting (CS) occurs when uninjured axons respond to denervated tissue surrounding the axon by growing branches of the axon to reinnervate the denervated zone. This process is signaled by factors released by the denervated tissue. Nerve growth factor (NGF) has been shown to be required and sufficient for the initiation and maintenance of CS. Previous work showed CD2 associated protein (CD2AP) mRNA increased following a spared dermatome procedure to model collateral sprouting. CD2AP links the cytoskeleton to tyrosine kinase receptors such as TrkA (the NGF receptor), where it is involved in the cellular response to growth factor signaling. Here …
