Neuroendocrine Function Of Female Youth With Callous-Unemotional Traits, Andrew Gostisha Aug 2011

Neuroendocrine Function Of Female Youth With Callous-Unemotional Traits, Andrew Gostisha

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits have been shown to designate a particular subgroup of antisocial youth that are particularly violent, recidivistic, and more likely to continue offending in adulthood. Disordered neuroendocrine function may be a mechanism for the development of CU traits. We examined whether altered stress responsivity served as a mechanism linking stress exposure and the expression of CU traits. Participants were 15 incarcerated adolescent girls with CU traits. Measures of CU traits, stress exposure, and salivary cortisol were collected. Results revealed girls with CU traits had higher morning levels of cortisol, an intact cortisol awakening response (CAR), and flatter diurnal …

Dark Consciousness: Theory Of Mind And Henry James’S The Golden Bowl, Adam Maillet Aug 2011

Dark Consciousness: Theory Of Mind And Henry James’S The Golden Bowl, Adam Maillet

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Using the psychological concepts of Theory of Mind and embodied cognition, the author explores and questions the traditional readings of Henry James's novel, The Golden Bowl, and its protagonist, Maggie Verver. Although the majority of critics view her as a positive character, James takes great effort to subvert her thoughts and mislead the reader. Despite lacking a modern technical vocabulary, James remains acutely aware of how human cognitive structures both process a text and function within a social setting.

Metabolism And Cryo-Sensitivity Of Domestic Cat (Felis Catus) And Cheetah (Acinonyx Jubatus) Spermatozoa, Kimberly Terrell Aug 2011

Metabolism And Cryo-Sensitivity Of Domestic Cat (Felis Catus) And Cheetah (Acinonyx Jubatus) Spermatozoa, Kimberly Terrell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Teratospermia (ejaculation of ≥ 60% structurally abnormal spermatozoa) is prevalent among felids facing extinction risk, including the cheetah. This trait also occurs in certain domestic cat populations, providing a valuable research model. Multiple components of sperm function are disrupted in teratospermic cats, and even structurally normal spermatozoa from these ejaculates may be functionally compromised. Teratospermic ejaculates are highly sensitive to damage during cryopreservation, limiting the success of genome resource banking programs for species conservation. Although both teratospermia and cryopreservation are linked to disruptions in multiple energy-dependent sperm processes, the metabolism of these cells has not been investigated. This project explored …

Ferritin Diversity: Mechanistic Studies, Disease Implications, And Materials Chemistry, Robert Joseph Hilton Aug 2011

Ferritin Diversity: Mechanistic Studies, Disease Implications, And Materials Chemistry, Robert Joseph Hilton

Theses and Dissertations

The study of ferritin includes a rich history of discoveries and scientific progress. Initially, the composition of ferritin was determined. Soon, it was shown that ferritin is a spherical, hollow protein. Eventually, over several decades of research, the structure and some function of this interesting protein was elucidated. However, the ferritin field was not completely satisfied. Today, for example, researchers are interested in refining the details of ferritin function, in discovering the role of ferritin in a variety of diseases, and in using ferritin for materials chemistry applications. The work presented in this dissertation highlights the progress that we have …

Water In Protein Cavities: Free Energy, Entropy, Enthalpy, And Its Influences On Protein Structure And Flexibility, Hongtao Yu Aug 2011

Water In Protein Cavities: Free Energy, Entropy, Enthalpy, And Its Influences On Protein Structure And Flexibility, Hongtao Yu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Complexes of the antibiotics novobiocin and clorobiocin with DNA gyrase are illustrative of the importance of bound water to binding thermodynamics. Mutants resistantto novobiocin as well as those with a decreased affinity for novobiocin over clorobiocinboth involve a less favorable entropy of binding, which more than compensates for amore favorable enthalpy, and additional water molecules at the proteinligandinterface.Free energy, enthalpy, and entropy for these water molecules were calculated by thermodynamicintegration computer simulations. The calculations show that addition of thewater molecules is entropically unfavorable, with values that are comparable to the measuredentropy differences. The free energies and entropies correlate with the …

Synthesis Of Chiral Intermediates By Deritivization Of Monosaccharides, Sanjeeva Dodlapati Aug 2011

Synthesis Of Chiral Intermediates By Deritivization Of Monosaccharides, Sanjeeva Dodlapati

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Conformationally constrained bicyclic amino acids are invaluable in the synthesis of natural products and peptidomimetics. Aeruginosins contain novel bicyclic amino acid, 2--‐carboxy--‐6--‐hydroxyl octahydrindole (Choi) as the core structure. Aeruginosins are tetra peptide serine protease inhibitors isolated from marine sponges and cyanobacterial water blooms. Rigid bicyclic amino acid(Choi)is an essential core structure, which strongly influences biological activity of aeruginosin family members. Aeruginosins showed promising inhibitory activity against thrombin, trypsin, and factor VIIa. Thrombin and factor VIIa play a major role in blood clotting cascade; excessive coagulation leads to thrombosis and other cardiovascular diseases. Several research groups have reported a number of …

Sea: A Novel Computational And Gui Software Pipeline For Detecting Activated Biological Sub-Pathways, Thair Judeh Aug 2011

Sea: A Novel Computational And Gui Software Pipeline For Detecting Activated Biological Sub-Pathways, Thair Judeh

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With the ever increasing amount of high-throughput molecular profile data, biologists need versatile tools to enable them to quickly and succinctly analyze their data. Furthermore, pathway databases have grown increasingly robust with the KEGG database at the forefront. Previous tools have color-coded the genes on different pathways using differential expression analysis. Unfortunately, they do not adequately capture the relationships of the genes amongst one another. Structure Enrichment Analysis (SEA) thus seeks to take biological analysis to the next level. SEA accomplishes this goal by highlighting for users the sub-pathways of a biological pathways that best correspond to their molecular profile …

Characterization Of The Desorption Electrospray Ionization Mechanism Using Microscopic Imaging Of The Sample Surface, Michael Craig Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) is an ambient ionization technique for mass spectrometry. This solvent based desorption ion source has wide applicability in surface analysis with minimal sample preparation. Interest in improving detection limits, broadening applications, and increasing the spatial resolution for chemical imaging has led to studies of the DESI mechanism. An inverted microscope has been used to image interactions between the DESI spray and test analytes on a glass surface. Microscopic images recorded with millisecond time resolution have provided important insights into the processes governing analyte transport and desorption. These insights are the basis of a rivulet-based model for …

Understanding The Origin And Rapid Diversification Of The Genus Anthurium Schott (Araceae), Integrating Molecular Phylogenetics, Morphology And Fossils, Monica Maria Carlsen Aug 2011

Understanding The Origin And Rapid Diversification Of The Genus Anthurium Schott (Araceae), Integrating Molecular Phylogenetics, Morphology And Fossils, Monica Maria Carlsen

Dissertations

Anthurium is a strictly neotropical genus of Araceae ranging from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, including ca. 900 species and displaying an enormous variation in leaf morphology, growth habit, leaf venation pattern and inflorescence and fruit colors. Despite its immense diversity, its ecological importance in Neotropical forests, and a very long history of botanical collection, cultivation, and taxonomical research, Anthurium had been almost neglected in molecular phylogenies. This study combines chloroplast (trnG intron, trnH-psbA and trnC-ycf6 intergenic spacers) and nuclear (CHS first intron) DNA sequence data for 102 Anthurium species and uses maximum parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analysis to …

Carotid Plaque Regression Following 6-Month Statin Therapy Assessed By 3t Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance: Comparison With Ultrasound Intima Media Thickness, Raymond Q. Migrino, Mark Bowers, Leanne Harmann, Robert W. Prost, John F. Ladisa Aug 2011

Carotid Plaque Regression Following 6-Month Statin Therapy Assessed By 3t Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance: Comparison With Ultrasound Intima Media Thickness, Raymond Q. Migrino, Mark Bowers, Leanne Harmann, Robert W. Prost, John F. Ladisa

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) allows volumetric carotid plaque measurement that has advantage over 2-dimensional ultrasound (US) intima-media thickness (IMT) in evaluating treatment response. We tested the hypothesis that 6-month statin treatment in patients with carotid plaque will lead to plaque regression when measured by 3 Tesla CMR but not by IMT.

Methods

Twenty-six subjects (67 ± 2 years, 7 females) with known carotid plaque (> 1.1 mm) and coronary or cerebrovascular atherosclerotic disease underwent 3T CMR (T1, T2, proton density and time of flight sequences) and US at baseline and following 6 months of statin therapy (6 had initiation, …

Systems archetypes are patterns of structure found in systems that are helpful in understanding some of the dynamics within them. The intent of this study was to examine educational attainment data using the success-to-the-successful archetype as a model to see if it helps to explain the inequality observed in the data. Data covering 1990 to 2009 was collected from the United States Census Bureau for the United States, as well as for the States of Georgia and Washington. Findings indicated that this archetype is useful in explaining the variation, and there are several other terms and concepts that are helpful …

The Characterization Of Avian Polyomavirus, Satellite Tobacco Mosaic Virus, And Bacteriophage Cw02 By Means Of Cryogenic Electron Microscopy, Peter S. Shen Aug 2011

The Characterization Of Avian Polyomavirus, Satellite Tobacco Mosaic Virus, And Bacteriophage Cw02 By Means Of Cryogenic Electron Microscopy, Peter S. Shen

Theses and Dissertations

Viruses are the most abundant biological entity in the biosphere and are known to infect hosts from all domains of life. The aim of my work is to identify conserved and non-conserved features among the capsid structures of related and divergent icosahedral viruses via cryogenic electron microscopy, sequence analysis, molecular modeling, and other techniques. Bird polyomaviruses often cause severe disease in their hosts whereas mammalian polyomaviruses generally do not. Avian polyomavirus is a type of bird polyomavirus with an unusually broad host range compared to the restricted tropism of other polyomaviruses. Although most polyomaviruses have a conserved, rigid capsid protein …

Benefits Of Physical Activity On Depression And Functional Quality Of Life During Treatment For Breast Cancer: Psychosocial Mechanisms., Jamie M. Stagl Aug 2011

Benefits Of Physical Activity On Depression And Functional Quality Of Life During Treatment For Breast Cancer: Psychosocial Mechanisms., Jamie M. Stagl

Open Access Theses

Women who are post surgery for breast cancer (BCa) experience distressing side effects that negatively influence Quality of Life (QoL). Physical activity (PA) following a BCa diagnosis is associated with decreased mortality, reduced recurrence, increased functional capacity, less fatigue, and may improve depression and QoL. Furthermore, evidence suggests that a combined PA and psychotherapy intervention may reduce physically and emotionally distressing side effects associated with diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of the study is to examine relationships among PA, fatigue, clinician-rated depression, depressed mood, and QoL in women after undergoing surgery for BCa and to assess the continuity of these …
