Structural Analysis Of The Hot Spots In The Binding Between H1n1 Ha And The 2di Antibody: Do Mutations Of H1n1 From 1918 To 2009 Affect Much On This Binding?, Qian Liu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chinh T. T. Su, Zhenhua Li, Chee-Keong Kwoh, Limsoon Wong, Jinyan Li Sep 2011

Structural Analysis Of The Hot Spots In The Binding Between H1n1 Ha And The 2di Antibody: Do Mutations Of H1n1 From 1918 To 2009 Affect Much On This Binding?, Qian Liu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chinh T. T. Su, Zhenhua Li, Chee-Keong Kwoh, Limsoon Wong, Jinyan Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Worldwide and substantial mortality caused by the 2009 H1N1 influenza A has stimulated a new surge of research on H1N1 viruses. An epitope conservation has been learned in the HA1 protein that allows antibodies to cross-neutralize both 1918 and 2009 H1N1. However, few works have thoroughly studied the binding hot spots in those two antigen–antibody interfaces which are responsible for the antibody cross-neutralization. We apply predictive methods to identify binding hot spots at the epitope sites of the HA1 proteins and at the paratope sites of the 2D1 antibody. We find that the six mutations at the HA1's epitope from …

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Rod Photoreceptor Reflectance In The Human Retina, Robert F. Cooper, Adam M. Dubis, Ashavini M. Pavaskar, Jungtae Rha, Alfredo Dubra, Joseph Carroll Sep 2011

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Rod Photoreceptor Reflectance In The Human Retina, Robert F. Cooper, Adam M. Dubis, Ashavini M. Pavaskar, Jungtae Rha, Alfredo Dubra, Joseph Carroll

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Using adaptive optics imaging tools to image the living retina, numerous investigators have reported temporal fluctuation in the reflectivity of individual cone photoreceptors. In addition, there is cone-to-cone (spatial) variation in reflectivity. As it has only recently become possible to image the complete rod photoreceptor mosaic in the living human retina, we sought to characterize the reflectivity of individual rods and compare their behavior to that of foveal/parafoveal cones. Across two subjects, we were able to successfully track the reflectance behavior of 1,690 rods and 1,980 cones over 12 hours. Rod and cone photoreceptors showed similar regional and temporal variability …

Paleoamerican Diet, Migration And Morphology In Brazil: Archaeological Complexity Of The Earliest Americans, Sabine Eggers, Maria Parks, Gisela Grupe, Karl J. Reinhard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

During the early Holocene two main paleoamerican cultures thrived in Brazil: the Tradição Nordeste in the semi-desertic Sertão and the Tradição Itaparica in the high plains of the Planalto Central. Here we report on paleodietary singals of a Paleoamerican found in a third Brazilian ecological setting – a riverine shellmound, or sambaqui, located in the Atlantic forest. Most sambaquis are found along the coast. The peoples associated with them subsisted on marine resources. We are reporting a different situation from the oldest recorded riverine sambaqui, called Capelinha. Capelinha is a relatively small sambaqui established along a river 60 km from …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Cytokines produced by adipose tissue, including adiponectin, have been associated with metabolic abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of insulin sensitivity measured by euglycemic hyperinsulinemic insulin clamp with plasma adiponectin and other adipokines in young adult African Americans.

METHODS: Participants were healthy African Americans. Anthropometric measures, blood pressure, an oral glucose tolerance test and an euglycemic hyperinsulinemic insulin clamp were performed. Insulin sensitivity measurements were adjusted for percentage of fat mass. Plasma concentrations of adiponectin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were assayed on plasma from fasting blood samples. Pearson correlation coefficients and …

Vegetation And The Importance Of Insecticide-Treated Target Siting For Control Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes, Johan Esterhuizen, Basilio Njiru, Glyn A. Vale, Michael J. Lehane, Stephen J. Torr Sep 2011

Vegetation And The Importance Of Insecticide-Treated Target Siting For Control Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes, Johan Esterhuizen, Basilio Njiru, Glyn A. Vale, Michael J. Lehane, Stephen J. Torr

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Control of tsetse flies using insecticide-treated targets is often hampered by vegetation re-growth and encroachment which obscures a target and renders it less effective. Potentially this is of particular concern for the newly developed small targets (0.25 high × 0.5 m wide) which show promise for cost-efficient control of Palpalis group tsetse flies. Consequently the performance of a small target was investigated for Glossina fuscipes fuscipes in Kenya, when the target was obscured following the placement of vegetation to simulate various degrees of natural bush encroachment. Catches decreased significantly only when the target was obscured by more than 80%. Even …

A Knowledge Management Tool Collaborative Learning: A Case Study Using A Wiki., Jalil Fallad Aug 2011

A Knowledge Management Tool Collaborative Learning: A Case Study Using A Wiki., Jalil Fallad

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Technology and knowledge seem to be at hand for everyone, but evidence shows that both still are eluding us. The University of Guadalajara (UDG) as well as other higher education institutions create knowledge from research on a daily basis. Nevertheless, in UDG there is not a system that promotes creation, preservation, and sharing of knowledge created experiences from research work among faculty members. Nonaka and Takeuchis Theory of Spiral Knowledge Creation had used as theorical foundation for the present study. This theory proposes that tacit knowledge is transformed into explicit knowledge creating new knowledge among members of an organization through …

Theoretical Prediction Of Drug Release In Gi Tract From Spherical Matrix Systems, Naga Lakshmi Ramana Susarla Aug 2011

Theoretical Prediction Of Drug Release In Gi Tract From Spherical Matrix Systems, Naga Lakshmi Ramana Susarla

Dissertations

The significance of controlled release drug delivery systems (CRDDS) lies in their ability to deliver the drug at a steady rate thus reducing the dosage interval and providing a prolonged pharmacodynamic effect. But despite the steadily increasing practical importance of these devices, little is known regarding their underlying drug release mechanisms. Mathematical modeling of these drug delivery systems could help us understand the underlying mass transport mechanisms involved in the control of drug release. Mathematical modeling also plays an important role in providing us with valuable information such as the amount of drug released during a certain period of time …

The Impact Of Dynamic And Passive Standing On Bone Mineral Density And Appositional Growth In Immobilized Children, Megan Diane Damcott Aug 2011

The Impact Of Dynamic And Passive Standing On Bone Mineral Density And Appositional Growth In Immobilized Children, Megan Diane Damcott

Dissertations

The first discovery of the potential role that mechanical loading has on determining the strength of bone occurred in 1892. However, for almost a century after this discovery, the specific mechanisms influenced by mechanical loading remained locked in a mysterious 'black box'. Then in the 1960s, the 'black box' was opened and continued work has now unlocked the basic mechanisms involved in mechanical loading and whole-bone strength. This increased knowledge has spurred clinicians and researchers to investigate the impact of weight-bearing interventions on individuals with an increased risk of osteoporosis. The most common weight-bearing clinical intervention used in non-ambulant populations …

Effects Of Operating And Geometric Variables On Hydrodynamics And Tablet Dissolution In Standard And Modified Dissolution Testing Apparatuses 2, Yimin Wang

Dissertations

Dissolution testing is routinely conducted in the pharmaceutical industry to provide critical in vitro drug release information for quality control purposes, and especially to assess batch-to-batch consistency of solid oral dosage forms such as tablets. Among the different types of apparatuses listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), the most commonly used dissolution system for solid dosage forms is the USP Dissolution Testing Apparatus 2, consisting of an unbaffled, hemispherical-bottomed vessel equipped with a 2-blade radial impeller.

Despite its extensive use in industry and a large body of work, some key aspects of the hydrodynamics of Apparatus 2 have received …

Multifunctional Reactive Nanocomposite Materials, Demitrios Stamatis Aug 2011

Multifunctional Reactive Nanocomposite Materials, Demitrios Stamatis

Dissertations

Many multifunctional nanocomposite materials have been developed for use in propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics, and reactive structures. These materials exhibit high reaction rates due to their developed reaction interfacial area. Two applications addressed in this work include nanocomposite powders prepared by arrested reactive milling (ARM) for burn rate modifiers and reactive structures. In burn rate modifiers, addition of reactive nanocomposite powders to aluminized propellants increases the burn rate of aluminum and thus the overall reaction rate of an energetic formulation. Replacing only a small fraction of aluminum by 8Al•MoO3 and 2B•Ti nanocomposite powders enhances the reaction rate with little change …

Movelets: A Dictionary Of Movement, Jiawei Bai, Jeff Goldsmith, Brian Caffo, Thomas A. Glass, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Recent technological advances provide researchers a way of gathering real-time information on an individual’s movement through the use of wearable devices that record acceleration. In this paper, we propose a method for identifying activity types, like walking, standing, and resting, from acceleration data. Our approach decomposes movements into short components called “movelets”, and builds a reference for each activity type. Unknown activities are predicted by matching new movelets to the reference. We apply our method to data collected from a single, three-axis accelerometer and focus on activities of interest in studying physical function in elderly populations. An important technical advantage …

Development Of Guidelines For Using Bioextraction Technologies To Manage Nutrients In New Hampshire's Estuarine Waters, Raymond E. Grizzle Aug 2011

Development Of Guidelines For Using Bioextraction Technologies To Manage Nutrients In New Hampshire's Estuarine Waters, Raymond E. Grizzle

PREP Reports & Publications

There is growing literature on bioextraction approaches to managing nutrients in coastal waters, and it includes studies using a variety of species. Bivalve mollusks and macroalgae have received the most attention for several reasons, but perhaps foremost because of their aquaculture potential. A December 2009 workshop at the University of Connecticut, which included speakers from several countries, indicated overall that although bioextraction approaches hold substantial potential there are still many unanswered questions. The present review takes a “what we know/what we need to know” perspective, and focuses on aquaculture. For some taxa (e.g., eastern oyster), wild populations occur in New …

Oxygen Isotopes In Diatom Silica : A New Understanding Of Silica-Water Oxygen Isotope Fractionation In Diatom Frustules And An Application Of Diatom D180 Values As A Record Of Paleohydrologic Variability In A Middle-Pleistocene Lacrustine Core From The Valles Caldera, New Mexico, Justin Dodd Aug 2011

Oxygen Isotopes In Diatom Silica : A New Understanding Of Silica-Water Oxygen Isotope Fractionation In Diatom Frustules And An Application Of Diatom D180 Values As A Record Of Paleohydrologic Variability In A Middle-Pleistocene Lacrustine Core From The Valles Caldera, New Mexico, Justin Dodd

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

I present oxygen isotope data from modern diatom frustules that were collected from freshwater systems in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. The frustules display a constant silica-water fractionation over the measured temperature range (5.1 to 37.8°C) regardless of species. This relationship is in close agreement with other published silica-water fractionation factors for laboratory cultured diatom samples; however, it is as much as 8° lower than equilibrium quartz-water fractionations and 3 to 4° lower than observed silica water fractionations in diatomaceous silica collected from sediment traps and sediment cores. Post mortem loss of organic material results in an alteration …

Family Farming And Economic Cooperation: The Emergence And Decline Of Agrarian Condominios In Southern Brazil, Flavio Sacco Dos Anjos, Eduardo Moyano Estrada, Nadia Vellada Caldas

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

In this work the authors analyze the Condominios as an example of economic cooperation adapted to the characteristics of family farming in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The process of modernization of Brazilian agriculture that took place in the 1960s and 1970s under the military governments is analyzed with special attention to the selective and exclusionary effects this process had on the small farmers, along with a study of the development of cooperativism. The consolidation of macro-cooperative models demonstrated reflect the interests and characteristics of modernized, export-oriented agriculture. The origins and development of Condominios as an alternative to the …

Systematic Search For Hydrocortisone Treatment Of Cardiovascular Insufficiency In The Preterm And Late Preterm Newborn Infant, Erika Fernandez

Clinical and Translational Science Center Scholarly Output

Background: Critically ill newborn infants admitted to newborn intensive care units often exhibit signs of cardiovascular insufficiency including hypotension. The suspected etiology for hypotension has been hypothesized to be caused by adrenal insufficiency. Treatment with glucocorticoids has been used for other critically ill populations, but there are limited studies in the term and late preterm newborn infant. The goal was to describe a search strategy to obtain the most relevant literature in this area of research interest. Methods: Systematic PubMed searches in the critically ill newborn population: Adrenal insufficiency [MeSH] OR cardiovascular insufficiency [MeSH] AND glucocorticoid therapy Results: The first …

Ritos Personales Que Señalan La Transición De Las Mujeres A La Segunda Mitad De La Vida, Angélica González Leal Aug 2011

Ritos Personales Que Señalan La Transición De Las Mujeres A La Segunda Mitad De La Vida, Angélica González Leal

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study explored, though qualitative feminist research methodology, what are the personal rites which mark the transition of women into the second stage of life. Six women, who lived in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, were the participants whose voices reflect the significance of their experiences, through in-depth interviews. The results revealed that, the rite of passage for women in the second half of life, consists of a series of experiences that equip them symbolic meaning. The rites are not living in a space of time, but are gestated slowly and sometimes seem to be going backwards. Menopause, …

Computational Methods In Natural Resource Economics: Agent-Based Modeling And Hotelling's Rule, David S. Dixon Aug 2011

Computational Methods In Natural Resource Economics: Agent-Based Modeling And Hotelling's Rule, David S. Dixon

Economics ETDs

This dissertation presents a prototype model and methodology for validating a simple agent-based model against the basic Hotelling monopoly model and a few basic extensions. Hotelling's Rule identifes the expected behavior of a market for a nonrenewable resource. The statement is simple - marginal profit will increase at the prevailing rate of interest - but the implications are far-reaching and not broadly understood. Agent-based modeling is a computer modeling and simulation methodology. It has its origins in biology and physics, but has become a powerful tool in the social sciences for examining systems in which the well-understood behaviors of individuals …

Los Tres Grandes - Herman Gallegos, Ernesto Galarza, Julian Samora: Rooted In Community, Guided By Friendship, Cultivating Leadership., Carmen R. Samora

American Studies ETDs

Los Tres Grandes, Ernesto Galarza, Herman Gallegos, and Julian Samora, fused intellectual constructs and grassroots strategies to reverse the societal dynamics they understood had marginalized Mexican Americans at both governmental and social levels. In 1968, the three scholar/activists launched the Southwest Council of La Raza (SWCLR), which four years later became the National Council of La Raza. My dissertation explores the relationship of these three men, a nexus of history and personality that launched what became the largest civil rights organization for Latinos in the United States. At a time when foundations earmarked minority support primarily for African Americans, Los …

Parents With Children In Therapy : Is There A Relationship Between Parental Attachment Styles And The Parent-Therapist Alliance?, Jessica Ruth Taylor-Pickford Aug 2011

Parents With Children In Therapy : Is There A Relationship Between Parental Attachment Styles And The Parent-Therapist Alliance?, Jessica Ruth Taylor-Pickford

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Over 2,000 studies have been completed exploring the working alliance in adult psychotherapy (Horvath and Bedi, 2002); by comparison, only 23 studies have explored the working alliance in psychotherapy with children (Shirk and Karver, 2003). However, the alliance in youth therapy may be more complex than in adult psychotherapy because it also involves the alliance between the child's parent(s) and the therapist (Hawley and Weisz, 2005). The parenttherapist alliance is one of the least emphasized relationships in theoretical or empirical literature referring to child therapy, and was the focus of the current study. Using a cross-sectional, quantitative research design and …
