Early Postoperative Serum Cystatin C Predicts Severe Acute Kidney Injury Following Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Zhu Wang
UCHC Articles - Research
n this multicenter, prospective study of 288 children (half under 2 years of age) undergoing cardiac surgery, we evaluated whether the measurement of pre- and postoperative serum cystatin C (CysC) improves the prediction of acute kidney injury (AKI) over that obtained by serum creatinine (SCr). Higher preoperative SCr-based estimated glomerular filtration rates predicted higher risk of the postoperative primary outcomes of stage 1 and 2 AKI (adjusted odds ratios (ORs) 1.5 and 1.9, respectively). Preoperative CysC was not associated with AKI. The highest quintile of postoperative (within 6 h) CysC predicted stage 1 and 2 AKI (adjusted ORs of 6 …

The Branched Actin Nucleator Arp2/3 Promotes Nuclear Migrations And Cell Polarity In The C. Elegans Zygote, William A. Mohler
UCHC Articles - Research
Regulated movements of the nucleus are essential during zygote formation, cell migrations, and differentiation of neurons. The nucleus moves along microtubules (MTs) and is repositioned on F-actin at the cellular cortex. Two families of nuclear envelope proteins, SUN and KASH, link the nucleus to the actin and MT cytoskeletons during nuclear movements. However, the role of actin nucleators in nuclear migration and positioning is poorly understood. We show that the branched actin nucleator, Arp2/3, affects nuclear movements throughout embryonic and larval development in C. elegans, including nuclear migrations in epidermal cells and neuronal precursors. In one-cell embryos the migration …
An Excursion Into The Intriguing World Of Polymeric Tl(I) And Ag(I) Cyanoximates, Nikolay Gerasimchuk
An Excursion Into The Intriguing World Of Polymeric Tl(I) And Ag(I) Cyanoximates, Nikolay Gerasimchuk
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The reaction of hot (~95°C) aqueous solutions of Tl2CO3 with solid HL (HL = NC-C(=N-OH)-R is a cyanoxime, and R is an electron-withdrawing group; 37 ligands are known up-to-date) leads to crystalline yellow/orange TlL. Similarly, the reaction between AgNO3 and ML (M = K+, Na+; L = anion of the monodeprotonated cyanoxime) this time at room temperature in mixed ethanol/aqueous solutions leads to sparingly soluble, colored AgL in high-yield. All synthesized monovalent Tl and Ag complexes were characterized using a variety of spectroscopic methods and X-ray analysis, which revealed the formation of primarily 2D coordination polymers of different complexity. In …
Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien
Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien
Political Science Faculty Research
Germany long stood as the epitome of the ethno-nationalist approach to immigration. However, passage of the new Citizenship Law in 2000, which introduced jus soli, seemed to signal a sea change in the direction of a postnational outlook. This paper warns against seeing in the new legislation an emerging normative consensus around the kind of liberal cosmopolitanism advocated by the likes of Jürgen Habermas, Ulrich Beck or Will Kymlicka. I document the persistent allure and influence of nationalism and point to the growing appeal and sway of proposals and policies informed by a postmodern normative outlook. Germany’s normative landscape, …

In the United States and most other developed countries, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death. Notoriously hard to detect in its early stages, the overall five-year survival rate for the disease is only 14 percent. Maik Huttemann, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular medicine and genetics in Wayne State University's School of Medicine, along with research associate Jeffrey Doan, Ph.D., is working to improve those odds by developing a screening technique for a gene that may be indicative of lung cancer. He is developing a platform technology which utilizes probe ligation and rolling circle amplification to screen for …

Application Of A Split Luciferase Complementation Assay For Thedetection Of Viral Protein-Protein Interactions, Qiji Deng, Dan Wang, Xiaoxiao Xiang, Philip R. Hardwidge, Radhey S. Kaushik, Thorsten Wolff, Suvobrata Chakravarty, Feng Li
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Intraviral protein-protein interactions are critical for virus survival in the host. Discovery of such interactions is important to understand molecular mechanisms of viral replication and pathogenesis. The development of a cell-based assay that can be employed to examine systematically viral protein interactions is described. The method, known as the Split Luciferase Complementation Assay (SLCA), is based on the principle that N- and C-terminal domains of luciferase alone do not emit luminescence; however, if fused to interacting proteins the two nonfunctional halves can be brought into close enough proximity through a specific protein-protein interaction to restore the functions of the enzyme …

Domain Requirements For The Diverse Immune Regulatory Functions Of Foxp3, Wei-Ping Zeng, Vincent E. Sollars, Andrea Del Pilar Belalcazar
Domain Requirements For The Diverse Immune Regulatory Functions Of Foxp3, Wei-Ping Zeng, Vincent E. Sollars, Andrea Del Pilar Belalcazar
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Foxp3 is responsible for the major immunological features of Treg cells, including hypoproliferation in vitro, immune suppression of conventional T cells and resistance to Th2 cell differentiation. In addition to the Forkhead domain, the Foxp3 protein contains the N-terminal, zinc finger and leucine zipper domains. To understand how these domains contribute to Foxp3 functions, we systematically compared the roles of these domains in determining the 3 major immunological features of Treg cells. We designed a bridge-mediated mutagenesis method to generate Foxp3 mutants with complete deletion of each of the domains. CD4 T cells expressing the Foxp3 mutant with deletion of …

Carol Anne Bond V The United States Of America: How A Woman Scorned Threatened The Chemical Weapons Convention, Anna Muldoon, Sarah Kornblet, Rebecca L. Katz
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
The case of Carol Anne Bond v the United States of America stemmed from a domestic dispute when Ms. Bond attempted to retaliate against her best friend by attacking her with chemical agents. What has emerged is a much greater issue--a test of standing on whether a private citizen can challenge the Tenth Amendment. Instead of being prosecuted in state court for assault, Ms. Bond was charged and tried in district court under a federal criminal statute passed as part of implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Ms. Bond's argument rests on the claim that the statute exceeded the …

Life History Of An Exotic Soft Scale Insect Phalacrococcus Howertoni (Hemiptera: Coccidae) Found In Florida, Kaushalya G. Amarasekare, Catharine M. Mannion
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
We investigated the life history of an exotic soft scale insect, Phalacrococcus howertoni Hodges and Hodgson that damages croton and several other economically important ornamental and fruit plants in Florida. There was no difference in the development, survival, and reproduction of this scale insect species when reared either on croton or on buttonwood at 27 ± 1°C, 12:12 (L:D) h and 65% R. H. The scale insect practiced ovoviviparity. We observed that eggs that came out from vulva hatched to first instars immediately. Newly hatched nymphs had a tendency stay underneath the female body for somewhat less than approximately 24 …
