ENGR 333
The Fall 2011 ENGR333 project focused on the Bunker Interpretive Center (BIC) at Calvin University.
I asked the students “What would it take for Calvin College to obtain an Energy Star rating for the BIC? Or, if the BIC already qualifies for an Energy Star rating, what would it take to improve the energy efficiency of the BIC (as measured by Energy Star metrics) by 15%, thereby ensuring Energy Star performance of the building into the future?”

A Blind Circadian Clock In Cavefish Reveals That Opsins Mediate Peripheral Clock Photoreception, Nicola Cavallari, Elena Frigato, Daniela Vallone
KIP Articles
The circadian clock is synchronized with the day-night cycle primarily by light. Fish represent fascinating models for deciphering the light input pathway to the vertebrate clock since fish cell clocks are regulated by direct light exposure. Here we have performed a comparative, functional analysis of the circadian clock involving the zebrafish that is normally exposed to the day-night cycle and a cavefish species that has evolved in perpetual darkness. Our results reveal that the cavefish retains a food-entrainable clock that oscillates with an infradian period. Importantly, however, this clock is not regulated by light. This comparative study pinpoints the two …

Putamen Grid, Thomas B. Freeman, James P. O'Connor
Putamen Grid, Thomas B. Freeman, James P. O'Connor
USF Patents
The present invention makes a grid array, for use in the transplantation of materials into the brain, in the shape of a predetermined structure, such as the putamen, based on anatomic analysis the structure. Alternatively, a smaller grid array is used which only includes the putamen target and not the caudate target, and also has two windows within the grid array. Because of the smaller size of this grid array as well as the two cutouts in the middle, it is possible for the first time to observe the brain as the needle enters the brain through the grid array. …
Perceived Importance And Actual Intake Of Calcium And Vitamin D In Young Female Athletes, Miriam E. Zambrano
Perceived Importance And Actual Intake Of Calcium And Vitamin D In Young Female Athletes, Miriam E. Zambrano
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Calcium needs increase as a child grows. Actual intake often decreases as a child gets older, leaving his/her developing bones at risk for injury during childhood and increasing the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between psychosocial factors influencing consumption of calcium and vitamin D-rich foods and actual intakes of these nutrients. We examined the dietary calcium and vitamin D intakes, determined serum vitamin D levels, and assessed nutrition knowledge and perception of a sample of 20 young girls participating in competitive cheerleading in Omaha, Nebraska. From this information we …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
BACKGROUND: The current study was undertaken to determine the degree of activation of gallbladder mucosal mast cells, whether mast cell (MC) density or activation differ between patients with and without a positive clinical response to cholecystectomy, and whether either density or activation correlate with gallbladder emptying.
RESULTS: Fifteen biliary dyskinesia (BD) and 13 symptomatic cholelithiasis (CL) patients undergoing cholecystectomy were prospectively enrolled. Gallbladder wall MC density (by immunohistochemistry) and activation (by electron microscopy) were determined. Clinical response was evaluated 30 days post-cholecystectomy on a 5-point Likert-type scale. A complete or nearly complete clinical response was seen in 100% of CL …

Facilitating Joint Chaos And Fractal Analysis Of Biosignals Through Nonlinear Adaptive Filtering., Jianbo Gao, Jing Hu, Wen-Wen Tung
Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
Chaos and random fractal theories are among the most important for fully characterizing nonlinear dynamics of complicated multiscale biosignals. Chaos analysis requires that signals be relatively noise-free and stationary, while fractal analysis demands signals to be non-rhythmic and scale-free.
Methodology/Principal Findings
To facilitate joint chaos and fractal analysis of biosignals, we present an adaptive algorithm, which: (1) can readily remove nonstationarities from the signal, (2) can more effectively reduce noise in the signals than linear filters, wavelet denoising, and chaos-based noise reduction techniques; (3) can readily decompose a multiscale biosignal into a series of intrinsically bandlimited functions; and (4) …

Differences Between Trypanosoma Brucei Gambiense Groups 1 And 2 In Their Resistance To Killing By Trypanolytic Factor 1, Paul Capewell, Nicola J. Veitch, C. Michael R. Turner, Jayne Raper, Matthew Berriman, Stephen L. Hajduk, Annette Macleod
Publications and Research
Background: The three sub-species of Trypanosoma brucei are important pathogens of sub-Saharan Africa. T. b. brucei is unable to infect humans due to sensitivity to trypanosome lytic factors (TLF) 1 and 2 found in human serum. T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense are able to resist lysis by TLF. There are two distinct sub-groups of T. b. gambiense that differ genetically and by human serum resistance phenotypes. Group 1 T. b. gambiense have an invariant phenotype whereas group 2 show variable resistance. Previous data indicated that group 1 T. b. gambiense are resistant to TLF-1 due in-part to reduced …

A Growing Debate Over The Rights Of Posthumously Conceived Children: Part One In A Two-Part Series Of Columns, Joanna L. Grossman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Is a child legally related to her biological father when she was conceived after he died? That is the question at the heart of Beeler v. Astrue, a recent ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit that contributes to a growing difference of judicial opinion about the rights of posthumously conceived children. In this column, I’ll explain the Beeler case and why the question it raises has caused a split among the judges who have considered it.

Follicular Dendritic Cells, Resting Cd4+ T Cells And Human Immunodeficiency Virus Expression, Changna Wang
Follicular Dendritic Cells, Resting Cd4+ T Cells And Human Immunodeficiency Virus Expression, Changna Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Many events associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection/replication occur in and around the germinal centers (GCs) of secondary lymphoid tissues where follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) reside, suggesting that this microenvironment may contribute unique signaling that is important to viral progression. My research focused on characterizing signaling, both positive and negative, contributed by FDCs that affects HIV infection and replication. Specifically, I determined if FDC signals could induce the expression of latent HIV in T cells and if so, to characterize the signaling pathways involved. Moreover, I also examined the ability of FDCs to produce inhibitory signals that might block …
