Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: In addition to vertical transmission, organisms can also acquire genes from other distantly related species or from their extra-chromosomal elements (plasmids and viruses) via horizontal gene transfer (HGT). It has been suggested that phages represent substantial forces in prokaryotic evolution. In eukaryotes, retroviruses, which can integrate into host genome as an obligate step in their replication strategy, comprise approximately 8% of the human genome. Unlike retroviruses, few members of other virus families are known to transfer genes to host genomes.

RESULTS: Here we performed a systematic search for sequences related to circular single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viruses in publicly available …

Degradable Cross-Linked Nanoassemblies As Drug Carriers For Heat Shock Protein 90 Inhibitor 17-N-Allylamino-17-Demethoxy-Geldanamycin, Andrei G. Ponta, Shanjida Akter, Younsoo Bae Sep 2011

Degradable Cross-Linked Nanoassemblies As Drug Carriers For Heat Shock Protein 90 Inhibitor 17-N-Allylamino-17-Demethoxy-Geldanamycin, Andrei G. Ponta, Shanjida Akter, Younsoo Bae

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Cross-linked nanoassemblies (CNAs) with a degradable core were prepared for sustained release of 17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG), a potent inhibitor of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90). The particle size of CNAs ranged between 100 and 250 nm, which changed depending on the cross-linking yields and drug entrapment method. CNAs with a 1% cross-linking yield entrapped 17-AAG in aqueous solutions, yet degraded in 3 hrs. CNAs entrapped 5.2 weight% of 17-AAG as the cross-linking yield increased to 10%, retaining more than 80% of particles for 24 hrs. CNAs with drugs entrapped after the cross-linking reactions were 100 nm and remained stable in both …

Tracking Spectral Shapes And Temporal Dynamics Along A Femtosecond Filament, Emilia Schulz, Daniel S. Steingrube, Thomas Binhammer, Mette B. Gaarde, Arnaud Couairon, Uwe Morgner, Milutin Kovačev

Faculty Publications

The spectral evolution of a high-intensity light channel formed by filamentation is investigated in a detailed experimental study. We also track the spatio-temporal dynamics by high-order harmonic generation along the filament. Both the spectral and temporal diagnostics are performed as a function of propagation distance, by extracting the light pulses directly from the hot filament core into vacuum via pinholes that terminate the nonlinear propagation. We compare the measured spectral shapes to simulations and analyze numerically the temporal dynamics inside the filament. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

Cooperative Approaches Indicating To Capacity And Power Control For Ad Hoc Wireless Network, Liuju Wu, Maciej Jan Zawodniok Sep 2011

Cooperative Approaches Indicating To Capacity And Power Control For Ad Hoc Wireless Network, Liuju Wu, Maciej Jan Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, two integrated schemes for fair capacity allocation and power control for ad hoc wireless network are presented. the game theory approach is utilized to derive a collaborative update law. in the practical wireless network, a non-uniform distribution of nodes results in varying degree of interference among the network links or hops. Such varying mutual interference may lead to unfair allocation of bandwidth and result in network congestion. as a result, some links may become bottlenecks for the entire network. Hence, it is important to fairly allocate resources in the entire network. the proposed schemes aim to address …

Solving The Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem With Environmental Criteria Based On Real Estimations In Road Transportation: A Case Study, Javier Faulin, Angel Juan, Fernando Lera, Scott Erwin Grasman

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the most important objectives in company logistics is the optimization of goods distribution considering the whole value chain. There are many algorithms to optimize the capacitated vehicle routing problems (CVRP) associated to problems of road transportation. the objective function of those problems usually involves distance, cost, number of vehicles, or profits, among others. in this contribution we also take into account environmental costs. Here, we want to manage environmental costs estimations based on surveys about road transportation crossing rural areas having valuable biological and natural stock. Thus, we develop some variants (AWEC) to traditional heuristic algorithms, such as …

Strain-Dependent Variation In The Early Transcriptional Response To Cns Injury Using A Cortical Explant System, David J. Graber, Brent T. Harris, William F. Hickey Sep 2011

Strain-Dependent Variation In The Early Transcriptional Response To Cns Injury Using A Cortical Explant System, David J. Graber, Brent T. Harris, William F. Hickey

Dartmouth Scholarship

While it is clear that inbred strains of mice have variations in immunological responsiveness, the influence of genetic background following tissue damage in the central nervous system is not fully understood. A cortical explant system was employed as a model for injury to determine whether the immediate transcriptional response to tissue resection revealed differences among three mouse strains. Immunological mRNAs were measured in cerebral cortex from SJL/J, C57BL/6J, and BALB/cJ mice using real time RT-PCR. Freshly isolated cortical tissue and cortical sections incubated in explant medium were examined. Levels of mRNA, normalized to β-actin, were compared using one way analysis …

Whole-Exome Sequencing Of Dna From Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (Pbmc) And Ebv-Transformed Lymphocytes From The Same Donor., Eric R Londin, Margaret A Keller, Michael R D'Andrea, Kathleen Delgrosso, Adam Ertel, Saul Surrey, Paolo Fortina

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The creation of lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) through Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) transformation of B-lymphocytes can result in a valuable biomaterial for cell biology research and a renewable source of DNA. While LCLs have been used extensively in cellular and genetic studies, the process of cell transformation and expansion during culturing may introduce genomic changes that may impact their use and the interpretation of subsequent genetic findings.

RESULTS: We performed whole exome sequencing on a tetrad family using DNA derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and LCLs from each individual. We generated over 4.7 GB of mappable sequence to …

Students' Gender Bias In Teaching Evaluations, Narissra Punyanunt-Carter, Stacy L Carter

Higher Learning Research Communications

The goal of this study was to investigate if there is gender bias in student evaluations. Researchers administered a modified version of the teacher evaluation forms to 58 students (male=30; female=28) in a basic introductory communications class. Half the class was instructed to fill out the survey about a male professor, and the other half a female professor. Researchers broke down the evaluation results question by question in order to give a detailed account of the findings. Results revealed that there is certainly some gender bias at work when students evaluate their instructors. It was also found that gender bias …

In Response: The Ideal Psychiatry Residency Training Program, Allan Tasman, Md Sep 2011

In Response: The Ideal Psychiatry Residency Training Program, Allan Tasman, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

There is little to be added in the way of specifics to James Deming's review of the necessary ingredients for an ideal Residency Training Program (1). He not only reviews the specific issues which must be addressed regarding the "nuts and bolts" of training, but also emphasizes the need for phase specificity of both clinical and didactic experiences and the need to view residency training from a developmental perspective. Rather than comment specifically on the points Deming raises, I would like to address other ingredients in residency training which are to be valued in the ideal program.
