The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) well blowout released more petroleum hydrocarbons into the marine environment than any previous U.S. oil spill (4.9 million barrels), fouling marine life, damaging deep sea and shoreline habitats and causing closures of economically valuable fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico. A suite of pollutants—liquid and gaseous petroleum compounds plus chemical dispersants—poured into ecosystems that had already been stressed by overfishing, development and global climate change. Beyond the direct effects that were captured in dramatic photographs of oiled birds in the media, it is likely that there are subtle, delayed, indirect and potentially synergistic impacts of these …

Roar: A Reference Ontology For Anatomical Relations, Alton B. Coalter, Jennifer L. Leopold Sep 2011

Roar: A Reference Ontology For Anatomical Relations, Alton B. Coalter, Jennifer L. Leopold

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ontology has become a useful model for organizing knowledge. This is particularly true in the field of biomedicine, where individual ontologies have been created for specific data domains ranging from genomics through species morphologies to human anatomical reference ontologies. Although specific sets of relationships have been proposed to improve the accuracy and consistency of such ontologies, there has been little to nothing proposed concerning the organization of those relationships. to help address this deficiency, herein we present a Reference Ontology of Anatomical Relations (ROAR). ROAR extends the concepts used in existing biomedical ontologies by defining and hierarchically organizing temporal, …

A Comparison Of Finite State Classifier And Mahalanobis-Taguchi System For Multivariate Pattern Recognition In Skin Cancer Detection, Elizabeth A. Cudney, Steven M. Corns

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This project presents two methods for image classification for the detection of malignant melanoma: The Mahalanobis-Taguchi System and Finite State Classifiers. the Mahalanobis-Taguchi System is a diagnosis and predictive method for analyzing patterns in multivariate cases, while Finite State Classifiers are a state-based machine learning technique. the goal of this study is to compare the ability of the Mahalanobis-Taguchi System and a Finite State Classifier to discriminate using small data sets. We examine the discriminant ability as a function of data set size using publicly available skin lesion image data. While analysis of the data shows a high degree of …

Temporal Sensitivity Changes With Extended Training In A Bisection Task In A Transgenic Rat Model, Bruce L. Brown, Sophie Hohn, Alexis Faure, Stephan Von Horsten, Pascale Le Blanc, Nathalie Desvignes, Nicole El Massioui, Valerie Doyere

Publications and Research

The present study investigated temporal perception in a Huntington disease transgenic rat model using a temporal bisection procedure. After initial discrimination training in which animals learned to press one lever after a 2-s tone duration, and the other lever after a 8-s tone duration for food reward, the bisection procedure was implemented in which intermediate durations with no available reinforcement were interspersed with trials with the anchor durations. Bisection tests were repeated in a longitudinal design from 4 to 8 months of age.The results showed that response latencies evolved from a monotonic step-function to an inverted U-shaped function with repeated …

The Myth Of Progress In Science: Dialectics, Distortion And Lysenkoism In The Soviet Union, Mark A. Ferguson Jr. Sep 2011

The Myth Of Progress In Science: Dialectics, Distortion And Lysenkoism In The Soviet Union, Mark A. Ferguson Jr.

The Hilltop Review

The scientific controversy surrounding Lysenkoism is both unparalleled and well known amongst historians and philosophers of science (Joravsky 1970, McMullin 1987, Pollock 2009, Wolfe 2010). Yet, while this may be true for scholars and students a generation ago, I argue that the controversy of Lysenkoism is not widely known today. Particularly in political science, this historical period and phenomenon in the Soviet Union remains irrelevant or at least, inconsequential to the scientific study of politics.

Supporting Problem Solving In Pbl, David Jonassen Sep 2011

Supporting Problem Solving In Pbl, David Jonassen

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Although the characteristics of PBL (problem focused, student centered, self-directed, etc.) are well known, the components of a problem-based learning environment (PBLE) and the cognitive scaffolds necessary to support learning to solve different kinds of problems with different learners is less clear. This paper identifies the different components of a PBLE, including a problem to solve, worked examples, case studies, analogues, prior experiences, alternative perspectives, and simulations. Additionally, different cognitive scaffolds necessary to help students interpret and use those components include analogical encoding, causal relationships, argumentations, questioning, modeling, and metacognitive regulation. Recommendations are provided for matching components and scaffolds with …
