The Philosopher And The Volcano, Babette Babich Oct 2011

The Philosopher And The Volcano, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Nietzsche's Zarathustra echoes Empedocles' as orator or speaker especially if reviewed in terms of Empedocles' esoteric Katharmoi or Purifications. This essay reads Zarathustra teaching of the eternal return of the same as the teaching of going to ground, that is: death and rebirth, arguing that death is present at the start and already at work in the section entitled The Adder's Bite. Indeed it is the explicit subtext of the overman.

Like Empedocles, Nietzsche's Zarathustra tells us that the human being is something that should be overcome. and thus it makes a difference that we hear Zarathustra proclaim this teaching …

Keratocan Is Expressed By Osteoblasts And Can Modulate Osteogenic Differentiation, John C. Igwe, Qi Gao, Tomislav Kizivat, Ivo Kalajzic Oct 2011

Keratocan Is Expressed By Osteoblasts And Can Modulate Osteogenic Differentiation, John C. Igwe, Qi Gao, Tomislav Kizivat, Ivo Kalajzic

UCHC Articles - Research

Keratocan is an extracellular matrix protein that belongs to the small leucine-rich proteoglycan family which also includes the lumican, biglycan, decorin, mimecan and fibromodulin. Members of this family are known to play a role in regulating cellular processes such as proliferation and modulation of osteoprogenitor lineage differentiation. The aims of this study were to evaluate the expression pattern of the keratocan within the osteoprogenitor lineage and assess its role in regulating osteoblast maturation and function. Results from gene expression analyses of cells at different maturation stages within the osteoblast lineage indicate that keratocan is differentially expressed by osteoblasts and shows …

Affiliation Goals And Health Behaviors, Jerry Cullum, Megan O’Grady, Howard A. Tennen Oct 2011

Affiliation Goals And Health Behaviors, Jerry Cullum, Megan O’Grady, Howard A. Tennen

UCHC Articles - Research

People are inherently driven by the need to form and maintain relationships, and these affiliation goals can influence health behaviors in two ways: (a) indirectly, by increasing a person’s attention to others and subsequently leaving them more likely to emulate the health behaviors of others (social contagion); (b) directly, by leading people to be more likely to engage in health behaviors they perceive as helping them to form and maintain relationships with others (self-initiated behavioral engagement). In this review, we discuss the evidence for the catalyzing role of affiliation goals in these two processes for a variety of positive (e.g., …

Prevalence And Prognostic Role Of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer By Race: A Surveillance Study, Helen Swede, David I. Gregorio, Susan H. Tannenbaum, Jessica A. Brockmeyer, Lori L. Wilson, Mellisa A. Pensa, Richard G. Stevens, Carolyn D. Runowicz Oct 2011

Prevalence And Prognostic Role Of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer By Race: A Surveillance Study, Helen Swede, David I. Gregorio, Susan H. Tannenbaum, Jessica A. Brockmeyer, Lori L. Wilson, Mellisa A. Pensa, Richard G. Stevens, Carolyn D. Runowicz

UCHC Articles - Research

A possible explanation for the relatively poor survival from breast cancer among blacks is the much higher rate of the adverse Triple-Negative sub-type. In a study of 1372 patients, blacks had twice the risk of death compared to whites among those with advanced cancer whether or not tumors were Triple-Negative. More research is still warranted to determine why blacks with advanced, but not local, breast cancer have a consistently higher rate of death.

Introduction

Emerging research suggests a substantially greater prevalence of the adverse triple-negative (TN) subtype (human epidermal growth factor receptor [HER]2−, estrogen receptor [ER]−, …

Mecanismos De La Participación Política El Movimiento Para Reformar El Sistema De La Licencia Postnatal En Chile, Lucas Hernández Oct 2011

Mecanismos De La Participación Política El Movimiento Para Reformar El Sistema De La Licencia Postnatal En Chile, Lucas Hernández

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This essay is intended to accomplish a systematic presentation of the postnatal debate that occurred in Chile from 2009-2011 with a specific focus on the role played by social organizations to organize and mobilize the political participation of the citizenry. The thought of an extension of post-natal leave was born in the 2009 election campaign where all candidates, including the current president Sebastian Piñera, advocated for an extension of this coverage. Sebastian Piñera, the first conservative president since the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, not only promised to make maternity leave longer and more flexible, he also pledged to remove obstacles …

Optimizing Spectral Indices And Chemometric Analysis Of Leaf Chemical Properties Using Radiative Transfer Modeling, Jean-Baptiste Féret, Christophe François, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Gregory P. Asner, Karen M. Barry, Cinzia Panigada, Stéphane Jacquemoud Oct 2011

Optimizing Spectral Indices And Chemometric Analysis Of Leaf Chemical Properties Using Radiative Transfer Modeling, Jean-Baptiste Féret, Christophe François, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Gregory P. Asner, Karen M. Barry, Cinzia Panigada, Stéphane Jacquemoud

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We used synthetic reflectance spectra generated by a radiative transfer model, PROSPECT-5, to develop statistical relationships between leaf optical and chemical properties, which were applied to experimental data without any readjustment. Four distinct synthetic datasets were tested: two unrealistic, uniform distributions and two normal distributions based on statistical properties drawn from a comprehensive experimental database. Two methods used in remote sensing to retrieve vegetation chemical composition, spectral indices and Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression, were trained both on the synthetic and experimental datasets, and validated against observations. Results are compared to a cross-validation process and model inversion applied to the …

Tracking Large Carnivore Dispersal Using Isotopic Clues In Claws: An Application To Cougars Across The Great Plains, Viviane Hénaux, Larkin A. Powell, Keith A. Hobson, Clayton Kent Nielsen, Michelle A. Larue Oct 2011

Tracking Large Carnivore Dispersal Using Isotopic Clues In Claws: An Application To Cougars Across The Great Plains, Viviane Hénaux, Larkin A. Powell, Keith A. Hobson, Clayton Kent Nielsen, Michelle A. Larue

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

1. Cougar (Puma concolor) populations, like other large carnivores, have increased during recent decades and may be recolonizing their former ranges in Midwestern North America. The dispersal routes taken by these animals from established populations are unknown and insight into these movements would facilitate their conservation and management.

2. We inferred the origin and migration route of four dispersing cougars using stable hydrogen (δD) and carbon (δ13C) isotope values along one of their claws. We compared isotopic variations within claws to regional and large-scale isoscapes of δD and δ13C values in prey species. Using …

Temporal Comparisons Of Avifauna In Enashiva Nature Refuge, Tanzania An Examination Of Species Richness And Abundance, The Effects Of The Onset Of The Short Rainy Season, And The Migrant Communities Present, Taran Catania

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examined avian species richness, abundance, distribution, and diversity in relation to seasonal and temporal changes in Enashiva Nature Refuge, Tanzania. Data was collected in using point-counts along pre-established transects in four distinct habitats – wooded grassland, grassland, woodland, and riverine – over an 18-day period from November 6 to November 23, 2011. Transects were comprised of five point-count spots, at which data on avian species an abundance was collected for 30 minutes each. Data was compared to two previous studies conducted in November 2009 and April 2011 with similar methodologies over comparable time frames. Descriptive statistics, community similarity, …

Building Leadership Through Action Research, Douglas Llewellyn, John Travers, Mike Wischnowski Oct 2011

Building Leadership Through Action Research, Douglas Llewellyn, John Travers, Mike Wischnowski

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

In a poem by the Nobel Prize winning Irish poet Seamus Heaney, the narrator remarks, "She taught me what her uncle once taught her: how easily the biggest coal block split if you got the grain and the hammer angled right." Getting the grain and the hammer angled right is never an easy task for leaders in any complex organization. However, if the coal block-size dilemmas of education are to be split into problems that are manageable, comprehensible, and mutable, then school leaders will have to work assiduously and persistently to accomplish just this.
