Many sex education curricula currently used in public schools indoctrinate students in gender stereotypes. As expressed in the title of one article: "If You Don't Aim to Please, Don't Dress to Tease," and Other Public School Sex Education Lessons Subsidized by You, the Federal Taxpayer, Jennifer L. Greenblatt, 14 Tex.J. on CL. & CR. 1 (2008). Other lessons pertain not only to responsibility for sexual activity but to lifelong approaches to family life and individual achievement. One lesson, for example, instructs students that, in marriage, men need sex from their wives and women need financial support from their husbands. …

Intraspecific Genetic Diversity Of The Oak Gall Wasp Andricus Lucidus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) Populations In Anatolia, Serap Mutun

Intraspecific genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Andricus lucidus haplotypes from Turkey were studied by PCR-RFLP analysis. A total of 26 haplotypes were detected among 144 individuals collected from 9 populations. The estimated average haplotype and nucleotide diversity within populations were 0.8089 and 0.115542, respectively. Nucleotide divergence estimates among the analyzed oak gall wasp populations ranged between 0.012% and 7.3%. Dendrograms indicated that there was a relationship between the geographical distribution of haplotypes and their clustering. AMOVA analysis for estimation of the partitioning of genetic differentiation at all different hierarchical levels was statistically significant. Analysis of variance revealed that the …

Skeletal muscle was investigated by SDS-PAGE protein electrophoresis for western versus eastern Turkish populations of the newt Ommatotriton ophryticus. The number of protein bands resolved was 25 in the west and 26 in the east. The modal number of trunk vertebrae was also compared among 10 populations of the eastern group (Artvin, Trabzon, Giresun, and Ordu) and 3 populations of the western group (Zonguldak, Bartın, and Karabük). The eastern group had 13 vertebrae except Şinik (Trabzon) specimens, which had 14 vertebrae, whereas the western group had 12 vertebrae. The genotoxic effects of sublethal doses of cadmium in peripheral erythrocytes of Oreochromis niloticus was investigated using micronucleus (MN) and nuclear abnormalities (NAs) tests. For this reason, the fish were exposed to medium changes of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L doses of cadmium (Cd) during an average treatment period of 10 days. On the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 10th days of the test period, the erythrocytes, including the micronuclei (MN) and other nuclear abnormalities such as lobbed nuclei (LB), blebbed nuclei (BL), and notched nuclei (NT), were counted and pointed out. The banding patterns of chromosomes of Microtus dogramacii, a recently described vole species endemic to Turkey, were studied. G-, C-, and Ag-NOR-banded patterns of this species are reported here for the first time. In this study, 2 karyotypical forms were determined. Each form had the same diploid chromosome numbers (2n = 48), but possessed different autosomal morphologies. For this reason, the samples collected from the research area were karyologically separated into 2 groups, cytotype-1 (NF = 50) and cytotype-2 (NF = 52). This study is based on the G-banding karyotype of 2 sibling bat species Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) (Greater Mouse-eared Myotis) and M. blythii (Tomes, 1857) (Lesser Mouse-eared Myotis) distributed in Turkey. G-banding karyotypes showed that the 2 taxa possessed identical G-banded chromosome arms. It was concluded that G-banded chromosomes are not sufficient as a diagnostic character for separating M. myotis from M. blythii.

The External Morphology Of The Gill Of Patella Caerulea L. (Mollusca: Gastropoda), Deni̇z Akşi̇t, Beri̇a Falakali Mutaf

Gross morphology of the gill was studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to associate it with its function in genus Patella. Secondary gills consisted of a single layer of gill folds, which appear mostly as triangular leaflets in scanning electron micrographs. The lamellae showed a prominent thickening on the free margin and horizontal swellings, which bear a series of ciliary structures on the frontal surface, as well as disperse bunches. They differed from the discocilia and, because chemoreception has been attributed to them in the absence of an osphradium, they are thought to contribute to the primary …

Description Of Spermatheca And Eggs Of Eurygaster Austriaca (Schrank, 1778) (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae),Based On Optical And Scanning Electron Microscopy, Selami̇ Candan, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Mustafa Güllü

Spermatheca and egg morphology of Eurygaster austriaca (Schrank, 1778) were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The spermatheca of E. austriaca is characterized by a spermathecal bulb, a pumping region, distal and proximal flanges and ducts, and a genital chamber. Each female was shown to deposit 14 green eggs on average in mass. The spherical eggs averaged 1.05 ± 0.05 mm in diameter. The first external evidence of embryonic development was the appearance of 2 red eye spots opposite each other beneath operculum followed by the appearance of a blackish T-shaped egg-burster between the eye spots. During the summer (July-August) of 2007, a total of 23 freshwater ostracods belonging to 14 genera were collected from 50 out of 90 different bodies of water in Diyarbakır. Of these 23 finds, Herpetocypris intermedia is a new report for Turkish ostracod fauna. In addition, 11 species (Ilyocypris decipiens, I. inermis, Eucypris virens, Herpetocypris brevicaudata, Psychrodromus fontinalis, Isocypris beauchampi, Potamocypris similis, P. unicaudata, P. arcuata, Limnocythere stationis, and L. inopinata) are reported from this city for the first time. This article is the first scholarly exploration of the implications of neurobiological memory modification for criminal law. Its point of entry is the fertile context of criminal punishment, in which memory plays a crucial role. Specifically, this article will argue that there is a deep relationship between memory and the foundational principles justifying how punishment should be distributed, including retributive justice, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, moral education, and restorative justice. Oral mucositis is a painful and debilitating chronic inflammatory condition that can result from chemo and/or radiotherapy. While current treatment strategies which provide temporary relief exist, there is still an unmet clinical need for a robust long active barrier strategy which can simultaneously provide protection and release drug to enhance the wound healing response. It is proposed that an affinity based layer-by-layer self-assembled barrier administered as a series of mouth rinses can allow for wound specific drug delivery, providing an effective regenerative therapy.

This study examines social tolerance and support for legal coercion for people suffering from schizophrenia. Mental illness, defined as a biomedical illness, has decreased stigma and support for legal coercion for other mental illnesses but has the inverse relationship with schizophrenia (Phelan, Yang, Cruz-Rojas, 2006; Schnittker, 2008). This increase in stigma may be linked to scientific quantitative data that places the illness in control of the person. A great deal of mental stress, depression, and anxiety often overwhelm cancer patients; those diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are no exception. Different types of stress invariably impact what has been termed “the brain-adipocyte BDNF/leptin axis” (Dr. Cao and colleagues of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University). For example, eustress (good stress) and distress (bad stress) both lead to increased sympathetic activity and adrenal gland stimulation, yet eustress reduces leptin levels and attenuates tumor growth while distress increases leptin levels and augments tumor growth. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most frequent and lethal primary brain tumor in adults. Despite intense biomedical research, the median survival after diagnosis is 15 months. One factor contributing to this poor prognosis is the immune protection afforded by the tumor microenvironment. Tumors have a diverse repertoire of immune-evasive techniques. One method of evasion not well explored is the release of tumor-derived exosomes. Exosomes are tiny membrane-bound vesicles of endocytic origin that contain viable mRNA and functional proteins that can affect the physiology of recipient cells. Selenoproteins are essential in vertebrates because of their crucial role in cellular redox homeostasis, but some invertebrates that lack selenoproteins have recently been identified. Genetic disruption of selenoprotein biosynthesis had no effect on lifespan and oxidative stress resistance of Drosophila melanogaster. In the current study, fruit flies with knock-out of the selenocysteine-specific elongation factor were metabolically labeled with ⁷⁵Se; they did not incorporate selenium into proteins and had the same lifespan on a chemically defined diet with or without selenium supplementation. These flies were, however, more susceptible to starvation than controls, and this effect could be ascribed to the …

This paper analyzes difficulties with the introduction of object-oriented concepts in introductory computing education and then proposes a two-language, two-paradigm curriculum model that alleviates such difficulties. Our two-language, two-paradigm curriculum model begins with teaching imperative programming using Python programming language, continues with teaching object-oriented computing using Java, and concludes with teaching object-oriented data structures with Java.
