The Use Of Ct Analysis To Assess The Ages Of A Modern Human Tooth Sample: A Comparision With Dental Attrition And The Lamendin Method, Kristina Galdes

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

An analysis of 81 contemporary adult human teeth was conducted in order to determine which of three methods best determines age at death. The teeth were loaned from the University of Tennessee body farm to the University of Michigan’s Biomedical Research Laboratory and were comprised of central incisors, lateral incisors and canines. Each tooth was of known age and most were also associated with sex and ancestry. Three observers used Lovejoy’s (1985) method of dental attrition, the Lamendin et al. (1992) periodontosis method and micro computed tomography to determine how accurately each method was able to assess the ages at …

An Upper Limit For Macromolecular Crowding Effects, Andrew C. Miklos, Congang Li, Courtney D. Sorell, L. Andrew Lyon, Gary J. Pielak

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Solutions containing high macromolecule concentrations are predicted to affect a number of protein properties compared to those properties in dilute solution. In cells, these macromolecular crowders have a large range of sizes and can occupy 30% or more of the available volume. We chose to study the stability and ps-ns internal dynamics of a globular protein whose radius is similar to 2 nm when crowded by a synthetic microgel composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) with particle radii of similar to 300 nm.

Results: Our studies revealed no change in protein rotational or ps-ns backbone dynamics and only mild …

University Of Montana Forensic Case #12: Comprehensive Case Analysis, Lauren Leanne Richardson Jan 2011

University Of Montana Forensic Case #12: Comprehensive Case Analysis, Lauren Leanne Richardson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The remains labeled University of Montana Forensic Case #12 (UMFC 12) were unearthed on August 30, 1983 during the construction of Cruse Avenue in Helena, Montana near the old School Administration Building on Allen Street. Construction workers, using a bulldozer accidently exposed the decomposing grave (Roesgen, 1983). It has been speculated that these remains might belong to a Chinese laborer dating back to the gold rush (Joyce, 1983). An 1884 map of Last Chance Gulch, in which the remains were discovered, indicate that a Chinese cemetery is in the area but the exact coordinates have never been determined (Joyce, 1983). …

Do "Clickers" Improve Student Engagement And Learning In Secondary Schools?, Andrew James Mankowski Jan 2011

Do "Clickers" Improve Student Engagement And Learning In Secondary Schools?, Andrew James Mankowski

Dissertations and Theses

There is a need in classrooms to engage students and maintain their interest in course content. A recent type of interactive technology, known as a "clicker," has shown potential to increase student engagement, performance, and participation in the classroom when used effectively. Peer instruction, a type of student to student interaction in which pairs or small groups of students discuss their answers to questions before responding, is often used in conjunction with clickers, and may account for the perceived effectiveness of these tools. The purpose of this study is to determine the clicker's effectiveness in increasing learning and increasing student …

Universal Event And Motion Editor For Robots' Theatre, Aditya Bhutada Jan 2011

Universal Event And Motion Editor For Robots' Theatre, Aditya Bhutada

Dissertations and Theses

Most of work on motion of mobile robots is to generate plans for avoiding obstacles or perform some meaningful and useful actions. In modern robot theatres and entertainment robots the motions of the robot are scripted and thus the performance or behavior of the robot is always the same. In this work we want to propose a new approach to robot motion generation. We want our robot to behave more like real people. People do not move in mechanical way like robots. When a human is supposed to execute some motion, these motions are similar to one another but always …

Sustainable Event Management Of Music Festivals: An Event Organizer Perspective, Stephanie L. Stettler

Dissertations and Theses

Sustainably managed music festivals have significant value and can provide a multitude of benefits to a healthy, sustainable and desirable society if their negative impacts are mitigated and positive impacts cultivated. To reach this great potential, sustainable event management of music festivals must become widely adopted and expanded as common practice. To drive this improvement of sustainable event management, there is a need to first understand the barriers and success factors event organizers face moving their music festivals toward sustainability. This study uses a research design of mixed quantitative-qualitative methods: a survey of thirty diverse music festival organizers across the …

In The Game Of Love, Play By The Rules: Implications Of Relationship Rule Consensus Over Honesty And Deception In Romantic Relationships, Katlyn Elise Roggensack Jan 2011

In The Game Of Love, Play By The Rules: Implications Of Relationship Rule Consensus Over Honesty And Deception In Romantic Relationships, Katlyn Elise Roggensack

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this study is to investigate the implications of relationship rule consensus over the meanings of honesty and deception in romantic relationships. Relationship rules are implicit understandings developed over time that guide individuals’ behavior in relationships, but they are often ambiguous and unspoken. Honesty and deception rules are particularly vulnerable to different interpretations given that honesty is held to such high esteem, yet deception is common in relationships. Since deception becomes a salient source of conflict when discovered, coordination of these rules should be linked to relational quality. In part one of the study, in-depth interviews helped identify …

Management And Life History Consequences Of Hybridization Between Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarkii Lewisi) And Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Matthew Philip Corsi Jan 2011

Management And Life History Consequences Of Hybridization Between Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarkii Lewisi) And Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Matthew Philip Corsi

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The role of introductions of nonnative fishes in the decline of native fishes cannot be overstated. Westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi, WCT) are a salmonid native to the northern Rocky Mountains. These trout hybridize with rainbow trout (O. mykiss, RBT) where they are sympatric; however, in portions of the WCT range where RBT have been introduced, hybridization appears to spread rapidly and threatens continued existence of WCT. The conservation value of these hybridized populations is equivocal, and a better knowledge of the ecological, demographic, behavioral, and genetic consequences of hybridization is needed to better inform conservation strategies. I investigated …

Legal Reasoning And Scientific Reasoning, Phoebe C. Ellsworth Jan 2011

Legal Reasoning And Scientific Reasoning, Phoebe C. Ellsworth

Articles

In my presentation for the 2010 Meador Lectures on Rationality, I chose to compare legal reasoning and scientific reasoning. Both law and science pride themselves on the rationality of their intellectual methods and believe that those methods are designed to analyze questions and reach the correct conclusions by means of reason, free from cognitive or emotional biases. Of course, both law and science often fall short of this ideal at all levels, from the decisions about individual legal cases or scientific studies to the acceptance of general theories. In many ways, the biases that mislead legal and scientific thinkers are …

Follow The Leader?: Maryland's Response To The New Federal Stem Cell Guidelines, Michael Ulrich

Faculty Scholarship

Billions of dollars have been spent in search of cures for diseases such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. Medical research has consistently pushed the envelope to find new ways to tackle old problems, yet, the field of embryonic stem cell research, a field that many believe could be the key to providing new and effective treatments, remains relatively underfunded due to concerns over ethical considerations. This is largely because the biggest financial backer of scientific research is the federal government, and its desire to finance embryonic stem cell research has waxed and waned over the …

Victims’ Rights In Context: Protecting Crime Victims Under The Utah Supreme Courts’ Analysis Of Rule 506(D)(1), Thomas E. Goodwin Jan 2011

Victims’ Rights In Context: Protecting Crime Victims Under The Utah Supreme Courts’ Analysis Of Rule 506(D)(1), Thomas E. Goodwin

Utah Law Review

Imagine the Utah Supreme Court ignoring a defendant’s claim that the confession used as the basis for his conviction was made involuntarily. This idea is outrageous because both the Utah and United States Constitutions protect defendants against compelled self-incrimination, and the public demands that courts uphold constitutional rights. Unfortunately, however, crime victims are not always afforded the same right. In a number of recent cases dealing with defendants’ attempts to gain access to crime victims’ privileged mental health records, the Utah Supreme Court gave no consideration to crime victims’ constitutional rights before determining the records’ admissibility. The purpose of this …

The Best Interests Of Transgender Children, Erika Skougard Jan 2011

The Best Interests Of Transgender Children, Erika Skougard

Utah Law Review

As in most family disputes, parents who disagree about the best interests of gender-variant children generally both love and want the best for their child. These cases touch on profound beliefs about human dignity, tolerance, morality, and religious obligation. They also force an uncomfortable examination of the deeply entrenched social prejudice toward those who violate social gender norms. With the growing visibility of transgender and gender nonconforming children, an increase in parent custody disputes like these is inevitable. The polarized scientific views regarding what is best for transgender children will test the wisest and most cautious judge—who will certainly face …

“V” Is For Vegetarian: Fda-Mandated Vegetarian Food Labeling, Carrie Griffin Basas Jan 2011

“V” Is For Vegetarian: Fda-Mandated Vegetarian Food Labeling, Carrie Griffin Basas

Utah Law Review

More than eight million adults in the United States are vegetarians, and around forty percent of all people in the United States regularly seek vegetarian food options while dining. Vegetarianism comes in a multitude of flavors, but a “pure vegetarian,” also called a vegan, does not consume any products that come from animals, including meat, milk, eggs, and gelatin. People practicing a vegetarian lifestyle may have turned to these dietary restrictions for ethical, religious, environmental, health, or other reasons.

Transforming Lives: Exploring The Impact Of Transitioning On Female-To-Male Transpersons And Partners Of Female-To-Male Transpersons, Megan Marie Tesene Jan 2011

Transforming Lives: Exploring The Impact Of Transitioning On Female-To-Male Transpersons And Partners Of Female-To-Male Transpersons, Megan Marie Tesene

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Recent trends in gender scholarship point to an increased research focus on transidentified persons. However, the majority of it revolves around the experiences of transpersons as individuals while ignoring the influence that transitioning has on intimacy in personal relationships. Furthermore, while previous research on FtM transpersons tends to emphasize the benefits that transmen receive from transitioning, the current study focuses on some of its negative implications. Through ten semi-structured, in-depth interviews, this research explores the experiences of four transmen and six partners of transmen who were involved in a romantic relationship during the transition process. My findings indicate that transitioning …

Power Of Inhibition Activity Screening And 3d Molecular Modeling Approaches In Hdac 8 Inhibitor Design, Gamze Bora Tatar, Tenzi̇le Deni̇z Tokluman, Kemal Yelekçi̇, Hayat Yurter

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In-vitro inhibition activity screening and in-silico 3D molecular modeling approaches are important tools for design and development of specific histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. The objective of this study was to investigate the consistency between these 2 approaches. The HDAC 8 inhibition activities of 8 randomly selected different carboxylic acid derivatives were screened and in-vitro experimental results were compared with in-silico molecular modeling calculations. This study demonstrated that there is no sole gold standard technique for inhibitor design, and it was concluded that a combination of molecular modeling and activity screening assays will ensure more comprehensive and dependable results.

Simulated Performance Intensity Functions, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte Jan 2011

Simulated Performance Intensity Functions, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte

Conference papers

Measuring speech intelligibility for different hearing aid fitting methods in a simulated environment would allow rapid prototyping and early design assessment. A simulated performance intensity function (SPIF) test methodology has been developed to allow experimentation using an auditory nerve model to predict listeners’ phoneme recognition. The test discriminates between normal hearing and progressively degrading levels of sensorineural hearing loss. Auditory nerve discharge patterns, presented as neurograms, can be subjectively ranked by visual inspection. Here, subjective inspection is substituted with an automated ranking using a new image quality metric that can quantify neurogram degradation in a consistent manner. This work reproduces …

Simulation Of Cell Seeding And Retention In A Disordered Polymeric Scaffold, Tejaswini Narayana Jan 2011

Simulation Of Cell Seeding And Retention In A Disordered Polymeric Scaffold, Tejaswini Narayana

LSU Master's Theses

Historically, bone repair has been performed using materials like metals, ceramics, cements and bioactive glass. The major problem with all these materials is that they do not perform the necessary non-structural functions of bone. Engineered tissue, created by growing bone cells on porous biodegradable material (scaffold), will address this issue with current bone repair techniques. Improving engineered tissue treatments requires a thorough understanding of factors affecting cell seeding and proliferation inside a disordered porous material which is not feasible using current experimental techniques. A model for particle transport in a disordered porous material that can predict the particle deposition pattern …

Integrated Weather Sensor Platform And Decision Support System For Improved Sweet Potato Production, Jose Pablo Rojas Jimenez Jan 2011

Integrated Weather Sensor Platform And Decision Support System For Improved Sweet Potato Production, Jose Pablo Rojas Jimenez

LSU Master's Theses

Water management represents an essential component in all agricultural activities, where significant improvements can be achieved through the implementation of field measuring devices and irrigation scheduling models. The methods that integrate these tools may be based on information regarding the soil, crop, and weather. Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the most important components of the soil water-balance used in modeling. A number of estimation methods have been developed to determine Reference Evapotranspiration (ETo) under various types of weather conditions. In this research, an analysis was conducted between different ETo estimation methods and ETo calculated from soil water content measurements and …
