To evaluate dose-related genotoxicity of desflurane. In the literature, there are studies with equivocal data regarding the potential genotoxicity of inhalational anesthetics. However, it is important to know about the genotoxic safety of an anesthetic agent. Materials and methods: Two groups were enrolled into the study. The first group was maintained with a desflurane minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of 0.5 and the second was maintained with 1 MAC of desflurane. Blood samples were obtained and studied at the baseline and after 3 h of anesthesia via sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assay. Results: In both groups, SCEs per cell were noted …

Geomechanical Stability Analysis For Co2 Sequestration In Carbonate Formation, Xue J. Zhou Jan 2011

Geomechanical Stability Analysis For Co2 Sequestration In Carbonate Formation, Xue J. Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Geomechanical analysis is one of the fundamental pillars to build up the confidence of geological sequestration of CO2. Large scale CO2 sequestration in deep carbonate formation is a complicated geological process, which will non-reversibly transform the presumed equivalent and stable status of a sedimentary basin that formed over millions of years: chemically, hydraulically, geothermally, and geomechanically. In this dissertation, thermoporoelasticity guides the theoretical establishment of a conservative baseline for the geomechanical stability analysis of CO2 sequestration.

Extensive laboratory tests, including CO2 flooding tests, permeability tests, uniaxial and triaxial tests, Brazilian tensile strength tests, poroelasticity tests, point load tests, and fracture …

Extreme Multistability In A Chemical Model System, Calistus N. Ngonghala, Ulrike Feudel, Kenneth Showalter Jan 2011

Extreme Multistability In A Chemical Model System, Calistus N. Ngonghala, Ulrike Feudel, Kenneth Showalter

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Coupled systems can exhibit an unusual kind of multistability, namely, the coexistence of infinitely many attractors for a given set of parameters. This extreme multistability is demonstrated to occur in coupled chemical model systems with various types of coupling. We show that the appearance of extreme multistability is associated with the emergence of a conserved quantity in the long-term limit. This conserved quantity leads to a "slicing" of the state space into manifolds corresponding to the value of the conserved quantity. The state space "slices" develop as t→∞ and there exists at least one attractor in each of them. We …

Some Characteristics Of The Stagnation Stage In The Development Of Silver Fir (Abies Alba Mill.) Trees In Selection Forests In Serbia, Damjan Pantic, Stanisa Bankovic, Milan Medarevic, Snezana Obradovic Jan 2011

Some Characteristics Of The Stagnation Stage In The Development Of Silver Fir (Abies Alba Mill.) Trees In Selection Forests In Serbia, Damjan Pantic, Stanisa Bankovic, Milan Medarevic, Snezana Obradovic

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

A period of stagnation in silver fir development has been recorded in all felled trees in selection forests of Serbia (233 trees on Mt. Goc and 451 trees on Mt. Tara). In the selection forests on Mt. Goc, the stagnation stage ranges between 40 and 330 years, but on Mt. Tara, it ranges from 15 to 185 years. It was concluded that the duration was caused not by the ecological and productivity potential (site class) of the soil for fir development, but primarily by the growth space, resulting from the application of single-tree selection or group selection systems. It was …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Tomato is one of the most widely produced and consumed vegetable crops worldwide. Plant breeders have usually focused on improvement of horticulturally important traits such as yield, fruit size, shape and colour. With increased attention on human health, however, plant breeders also consider the improvement of health-related traits of fruits and vegetables such as antioxidant characters. In the present study, genes controlling both health-related and horticulturally important traits were mapped in the tomato genome using 152 Lycopersicon hirsutum BC_2F_2 individuals. For this aim, all plants were phenotypically and genotypically characterised and a total of 75 QTLs were identified for all …

Immortality Through Tale In "The Crossing", Evanne Lindley Jan 2011

Immortality Through Tale In "The Crossing", Evanne Lindley

Global Tides

This article explores the dichotomy of life and death in Cormac McCarthy’s The Crossing through Jacques Derrida’s deconstructive lens. The article traces the novel’s ostensible indications that death is absolute, but highlights passages from the work which suggest shared narratives can challenge and even conquer death’s sting. Ultimately, the article interprets how McCarthy’s text breaks down the dichotomy between life and death and instead suggests that death can be transcended through storytelling.

Plantinga, Kant, And Cognitive Reliability, Peter Zuk Jan 2011

Plantinga, Kant, And Cognitive Reliability, Peter Zuk

Global Tides

This article applies Alvin Plantinga’s principle that self-defeat is inherent in any theory which gives the theorist reason to doubt her own cognitive faculties to Kant’s theory of perception, transcendental idealism. Because transcendental idealism excludes the possibility of knowledge about things in themselves, including the transcendental idealist’s own cognitive faculties, the theory is self-defeating under Plantinga’s argument. The article continues by arguing that Kant’s appeal to God as a way to vindicate the transcendental idealist’s cognitive faculties is problematic in several ways, and that the theory therefore cannot avoid self-defeat.

Genetic Elimination Of Dengue Vector Mosquitoes, Megan R. Wise De Valdez, D. Nimmo, J. Betz, H.-F. Gong, A. A. James, L. Alphey, W. C. Black Iv

Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)

An approach based on mosquitoes carrying a conditional dominant lethal gene (release of insects carrying a dominant lethal, RIDL) is being developed to control the transmission of dengue viruses by vector population suppression. A transgenic strain, designated OX3604C, of the major dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, was engineered to have a repressible female-specific flightless phenotype. This strain circumvents the need for radiation-induced sterilization, allows genetic sexing resulting in male-only releases, and permits the release of eggs instead of adult mosquitoes. OX3604C males introduced weekly into large laboratory cages containing stable target mosquito populations at initial ratios of 8.5-10:1 OX3604C:target eliminated the …

This paper concerns the development of water-compatible fluorescent imaging probes with tunable photonic properties that can be excited at a single wavelength. Bichromophoric cassettes 1a-1c consisting of a BODIPY donor and a cyanine acceptor were prepared using a simple synthetic route, and their photophysical properties were investigated. Upon excitation of the BODIPY moiety at 488 nm the excitation energy is transferred through an acetylene bridge to the cyanine dye acceptor, which emits light at approximately 600, 700, and 800 nm, i.e., with remarkable dispersions. This effect is facilitated by efficient energy transfer that gives a "quasi-Stokes" shift between 86 and …
