Did The Fda Properly Assess The Safety Of Olestra As A Food Additive?, Leah Lebel Jan 2011

Did The Fda Properly Assess The Safety Of Olestra As A Food Additive?, Leah Lebel

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt of the introduction to this article: Olestra, a fat-substitute comprised of sucrose that has been esterified with fatty acids (Blume 1995), has been the subject of much controversy ever since its creation. Olestra is not absorbed (Mattson and Nolen 1972) because it cannot be hydrolyzed by pancreatic lipases (Mattson and Volpenhein 1972) or taken up across the enterocyte microvillus membrane (Freston et al. 1997), and thus, cannot be utilized for energy. Olestra has physical and organoleptic properties similar to those of traditional triglycerides (Jandacek and Webb 1978) and is emulsified together with triglyceride (Freston et …

Alteplase: The Clot Buster, Mayer Goldberg

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt from the introduction of this article: The human body is defined by many complex and inconsistent characteristics. For example, the body forms blood clots in traumatic events, but blood clots are likewise associated with hazardous or fatal conditions. Platelets are small cells, derived from the precursor megakaryocytes, which are responsible for blood clotting to prevent bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel. Platelets fasten to each other and release a coagulation factor that solidifies around the ruptured area to prevent blood loss. A subordinate quantity of platelets can result in excessive bleeding. However, high platelet numbers …

A vesicular horizon index (VHI) that incorporates vesicular horizon thickness and the size and quantity of vesicular pores …

Clinical And Functional Assessment Following Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation To The Knee: The Role Of Patient Reported Outcomes, Performance Based Assessment, And Response Shift, Jennifer Sebert Howard Jan 2011

Clinical And Functional Assessment Following Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation To The Knee: The Role Of Patient Reported Outcomes, Performance Based Assessment, And Response Shift, Jennifer Sebert Howard

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) is a cell based therapy for the treatment of articular cartilage defects. Numerous studies have reported outcomes following ACI using a variety of patient reported outcomes (PROs), but no clear recommendations exist regarding which PRO is the most responsive to changes following ACI. Few studies have documented changes in performance based assessments (PBAs) following ACI. Response shift theory proposes that residual changes in self-report measures occur over time. Failing to account for response shift may result in over or under reporting of outcomes from which clinical decisions are made. The purposes of this dissertation were 1) …

Legislative Control Of The Menhaden Fishery, Nicole M. Rovner, Matthew G. Curtis Jan 2011

Legislative Control Of The Menhaden Fishery, Nicole M. Rovner, Matthew G. Curtis

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This year, six menhaden- related bills were introduced in the Virginia General Assembly. Delegate John Cosgrove (RChesapeake) introduced legislation in the House of Delegates that was identical to Senate Bill 765, a bill that proposed to shift oversight of the menhaden fishery to the VMRC. This article aims to highlight the unique stance taken by Virginia's legislature and explain why this management is better left to the commission responsible for managing every other fishery in the Commonwealth. While there may not be a conclusive link between reduction industry practices and a decline in water quality, Virginia's legislators should recognize the …

Preglimony, Shari Motro Jan 2011

Preglimony, Shari Motro

Unmarried lovers who conceive are strangers in the eyes of the law. If the woman terminates the pregnancy, the man owes her nothing. If she takes the pregnancy to term, the man's obligation to support her is limited. The law reflects this lovers-as-strangers presumption by making a man's obligation towards a woman with whom he conceives derivative of his paternity-related obligations; his duty is towards his child, not towards the woman in her own right. Thus, a pregnant woman's lost wages and other personal costs are her private problem, and if there is no child at the end of the …

Sex Bias In Neuroscience And Biomedical Research, Annaliese K. Beery, Irving Zucker Jan 2011

Sex Bias In Neuroscience And Biomedical Research, Annaliese K. Beery, Irving Zucker

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Female mammals have long been neglected in biomedical research. The NIH mandated enrollment of women in human clinical trials in 1993, but no similar initiatives exist to foster research on female animals. We reviewed sex bias in research on mammals in 10 biological fields for 2009 and their historical precedents. Male bias was evident in 8 disciplines and most prominent in neuroscience, with single-sex studies of male animals outnumbering those of females 5.5 to 1. In the past half-century, male bias in non-human studies has increased while declining in human studies. Studies of both sexes frequently fail to analyze results …

Synthesis, Self-Assembly And Biological Properties Of Self-Folding Cu(Ii) Coordination Polymers, Alejandro Arzola-Rubio Jan 2011

Synthesis, Self-Assembly And Biological Properties Of Self-Folding Cu(Ii) Coordination Polymers, Alejandro Arzola-Rubio

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The synthesis of materials via molecular self-assembly is a powerful bottom-up approach for fabricating matter in the nano- and micro-meter scales. This methodology involves the spontaneous and reversible organization of small molecules that interact with one another to create larger structures driven by non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic forces and metal-ligand coordination interactions. In this thesis, the design, synthesis and characterization of a new set of molecules that spontaneously self-organize in water to form three-dimensional nanoscale toroidal structures was investigated. These supramolecular structures were designed with an intrinsic affinity to bind and condense DNA strands with the intent …

This principle is active in many animals such as: birds, shrews, dolphins and bats, these last ones are going to be a fundamental part of our study. These animals use it as radar in order to find food, obstacles or just to locate objects.

These animals use ultrasound beams with a certain degree of angle and multiple receivers; such as the two ears that are located slightly apart, so at the time of the returning …

The Impact Of Sulfide Mineral Weathering On The Isotopic Signatures Of Fe And Cu In Metal-Rich Streams, Ana Lourdes Gutierrez Jan 2011

The Impact Of Sulfide Mineral Weathering On The Isotopic Signatures Of Fe And Cu In Metal-Rich Streams, Ana Lourdes Gutierrez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The oxidative weathering of sulfide minerals, like pyrite, at the Earth's surface controls the formation of acid mine drainage sites as well as the Fe isotope composition of these areas and the main processes taken place. In this study, water and rock samples were collected from acidic drainages (most from abandoned mining sites) from the St. Juan Mountains in Colorado. The water samples were measured in-situ for dissolved oxygen, dissolved Fe(II), pH, and conductivity. Filtered acidified, unfiltered acidified, and Fe-oxide samples were analyzed for their metal concentrations. Ion-exchange chromatography was applied to both water and digested oxide fractions in order …

Solving The Partial Differential Equation Of Vibrations With Interval Parameters Using The Interval Finite Difference Method, Brenda G. Medina Jan 2011

Solving The Partial Differential Equation Of Vibrations With Interval Parameters Using The Interval Finite Difference Method, Brenda G. Medina

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Accuracy and efficiency are among the main factors that drive today's innovative disciplines. As technology rapidly advances, efficiency takes on new meanings but what about accuracy? How accurate is accurate? Human error, uncertainties in measurement, and rounding errors are just some causes of inaccuracy. Interval Computations is an area that allows for such issues to be taken into account; for each measurement attained (for example), an interval can be built by considering the error associated with the measurement, and such an interval can be utilized in the mathematical computations of interest.

We consider the partial differential equation (PDE) of vibrations …

Computational Methods Of Hidden Markov Models With Respect To Cpg Island Prediction In Dna Sequences, Roberto Angel Ortega Jan 2011

Computational Methods Of Hidden Markov Models With Respect To Cpg Island Prediction In Dna Sequences, Roberto Angel Ortega

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Hidden Markov models (HMM's) are a specific case of Markov models where, contrary to Markov chains, the observer is unaware of what state the model was in when the symbol is observed. Like Markov chains, HMM's assume that the future state of a sequence is dependent only on the current state of the sequence. The parameters associated with HMM's are transition and emission probabilities, where transition probabilities are associated with the probability of transitioning from one state to another, and emission probabilities are the probabilities associated with observing a symbol given it came from a specific state.

The structure of …

Investigating Cell Line Identity And Gene Regulation In A Broad Array Of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Ashley Mottar Jan 2011

Investigating Cell Line Identity And Gene Regulation In A Broad Array Of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Ashley Mottar

Honors Capstones

Cultured cancer cell lines are a widely used approach in our biology research. Our lab uses several human liver cancer lines to study the role of two amino acid transporters (ASCT2 and LAT1) during growth. To validate the identity of each line for comparative results, a means of positive ID is needed. Short tandem repeat (STR) analysis is a method that uses the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to examine 'w' specific DNA regions, called loci, which surround specific genes. Originally used in forensic analysis and paternity testing, STR analysis has recently become incorporated into research laboratories. The reason is due …

Testing The Advantage Of A Cancer-Associated Glutamine Transporter In Liver Cells, Arphy Roy Jan 2011

Testing The Advantage Of A Cancer-Associated Glutamine Transporter In Liver Cells, Arphy Roy

Honors Capstones

Neutral amino acid transporter ASCT2 is selectively over-expressed in cancerous liver cells. The purpose project was to test why this amino acid transporter was being expressed and to inquire the implicit advantage ASCT2 gives a cancer cell. This topic is of significance due to its relevance to cancer biology and of the prospect of designing cancer drug therapies that can exploit the ASCT2 transporter under inquiry. Growth study curves using varying concentrations of glutamine and cysteine with cell lines RLE human, rat, mouse and control empty vector were conducted to illustrate possible advantage in survival and growth. A Western blot …

The El Nino Southern Oscillation Climate System, Katherine Volk Jan 2011

The El Nino Southern Oscillation Climate System, Katherine Volk

Honors Capstones

The El Nino Southern Oscillation climate system, ENSO, is the largest coherent climate system on Earth. The variability of ENSO effects climate and environmental conditions across the globe, impacting the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people. There has been intensive study on the behavior of this system. While the mechanisms that control ENSO are now largely understood, the variability of these mechanisms is unknown. It is also unknown how ENSO will respond to global warming. Currently there is a void of data on the history of ENSO over the past several thousand years. A comprehensive record of ENSO …

The Role Of Lipoproteins/Cholesterol In Genomic Instability And Chromosome Mis-Segregation In Alzheimer's And Cardiovascular Disease, Antoneta Granic Jan 2011

The Role Of Lipoproteins/Cholesterol In Genomic Instability And Chromosome Mis-Segregation In Alzheimer's And Cardiovascular Disease, Antoneta Granic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Several lines of evidence link Alzheimer's disease (AD) to atherosclerosis (CVD), including that elevated low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol is a common risk factor. Development of genomic instability could also link the two diseases. Previous fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses revealed a clonal expansion of aneuploid smooth muscle cells underlying atherosclerotic plaques. Likewise, cellular and mouse models of AD revealed tau-dependent mitotic defects and subsequent aneuploidy partly resulting from amyloid-beta (A&beta) interference with microtubule (MT) stability, and specific MT motors function. Moreover, AD patients develop aneuploid/hyperploid cells in brain and peripheral tissues, implicating similar mechanism that may lead to apoptosis …

Magneto-Dielectric Polymer Nanocomposite Engineered Substrate For Rf And Microwave Antennas, Cesar A. Morales Jan 2011

Magneto-Dielectric Polymer Nanocomposite Engineered Substrate For Rf And Microwave Antennas, Cesar A. Morales

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the first reported systematic investigation on the implementation of multilayer patch antennas over Fe3O4-based polymer nanocomposite (PNC) magneto-dielectric substrates. The PNC substrate is created by the monodispersion of Fe3O4 nanopthesiss, with mean size of 7.5nm, in a polymeric matrix of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

Recently, magneto-dielectric substrates have been proposed by several researchers as a means for decreasing the size and increasing the bandwidth of planar antennas. Nevertheless, factors such as high loss and diminished control over magnetic and dielectric properties have hindered the optimal performance of antennas. In addition, the incompatibility and elevated complexity prevents integration of conventional …

Developmental Trajectories Of Self-Control: Assessing The Stability Hypothesis, James Vance Ray Jan 2011

Developmental Trajectories Of Self-Control: Assessing The Stability Hypothesis, James Vance Ray

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A key proposition of Gottfredson and Hirschi's (1990) self-control theory is the stability hypothesis which suggests that an individual's level of self-control, once established between the ages of 8-10, is stable over the life course. Empirical results from examinations of the stability hypothesis have been mixed. Prior tests of the stability hypothesis have employed aggregate assessment methods (e.g., mean-level and correlational analyses). Such approaches fail to take into account the possibility that individual developmental pathways may differ. This study employs individual longitudinal data over a four year period for 3,249 7th to 10th grade subjects to assess the …
