Analysis Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Protein Phosphatase 2a C Subunit Expression, Megan M. Thompson Jan 2011

Analysis Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Protein Phosphatase 2a C Subunit Expression, Megan M. Thompson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Reversible protein phosphorylation is required for presumably most biological pathways. One of the major enzymes involved in eukaryotic dephosphorylation is Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A). PP2A is composed of three subunits: A (scaffolding), B (regulatory), and C (catalytic). Our lab is interested in determining the function of the five C subunits (C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5) in Arabidopsis thaliana. We have identified a Na+-induced altered root growth phenotype in c4 mutant plants. The goal of this project was to determine expression of the five C subunit genes throughout the life cycle of Arabidopsis with emphasis on correlating the location of …

Building And Deployment Of An Automated, In Situ Greenhouse Gas Gas Chromatographic System, Andrew H. Hart Jan 2011

Building And Deployment Of An Automated, In Situ Greenhouse Gas Gas Chromatographic System, Andrew H. Hart

Master's Theses and Capstones

High-precision, continuous monitoring of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N 2O), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and the criteria pollutant carbon monoxide (CO), is important for characterizing their regional sources and sinks and understanding how their ambient levels are changing with time and associated anthropogenic activities. For monitoring this suite of gases, a fully automated gas chromatographic based analytical system was built and deployed in the field at the UNH AIRMAP Observing Station at Thompson Farm in Durham, NH. The instrument consists of a Shimadzu 17A gas chromatograph (GC), equipped with a Flame Ionization Detector and …

Marine And Terrestrial Factors Affecting Adélie Penguin Pygoscelis Adeliae Chick Growth And Recruitment Off The Western Antarctic Peninsula, Erik W. Chapman, Eileen E. Hofmann, Donna L. Patterson, Christine A. Ribic

CCPO Publications

The article presents a study on the marine and terrestrial factors that affect Adélie penguin Pygoscelis adeliae chick growth as well as fledging mass off the western Antarctic Peninsula. In order to examine these factors, the researchers used an individual-based bioenergetics model which stimulates the growth of the penguins. The researchers believe that the results provide insight into climate-driven processes which influence chick growth and emphasize the need for field research that is designed to analyze the factors that identify the availability of Age-Class 3 yr (AC3) and older Antarctic silverfish.

Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Lori Townsend, Korey Brunetti, Amy R. Hofer Jan 2011

Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Lori Townsend, Korey Brunetti, Amy R. Hofer

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

What do we teach when we teach information literacy in higher education? This paper describes a pedagogical approach to information literacy that helps instructors focus content around transformative learning thresholds. The threshold concept framework holds promise for librarians because it grounds the instructor in the big ideas and underlying concepts that make information literacy exciting and worth learning about. This paper looks at how this new idea relates to existing standards and posits several threshold concepts for information literacy. This article won the 2013 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Instruction Section (IS) Ilene F. Rockman Publication of the …

The Obvious Invisibility Of The Relationship Between Technology And Social Values, Jamie P. Ross Jan 2011

The Obvious Invisibility Of The Relationship Between Technology And Social Values, Jamie P. Ross

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

We all too often assume that technology is the product of objective scientific research and that technology’s moral value lies in only the moral character of its user. To remove technology from a moral realm, we assume value and context neutrality. Yet the power of technology is a reflection of the values that exist in its developmental context. Technology’s moral realm is visible in the reciprocal relationship between culture and technology in the epidemiology of AIDS, clinical research and practice regarding heart disease, and DNA research. Cultural values decide what counts as a scientific question. When we look at the …

Use Of Bio Ethanol The Key Solution For A More Sustainable Road Transport, Alberto A. Boretti Jan 2011

Use Of Bio Ethanol The Key Solution For A More Sustainable Road Transport, Alberto A. Boretti

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of alternative transportation fuels clearly shows the advantages of reducing the use of nonrenewable fossil fuels vs. renewable synthetic and biologic novel fuels to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide. Being based on the natural or synthetic recycle of carbon dioxide through the use of renewable energy sources, use of these renewable fuels does not imply depletion of natural resources and is therefore sustainable in the long term. Renewable fuels and advanced internal combustion engines and powertrains are the technologies that in addition to be the most likely to produce benefits in term of carbon balance …

Morphology And Mechanics Of The Actin Cytoskeleton, David Aaron Quint Jan 2011

Morphology And Mechanics Of The Actin Cytoskeleton, David Aaron Quint

Physics - Dissertations

Contained in this thesis is the quest to model the growth, form and mechanics of part of the cellular cytoskeleton known as the lamellipodium. The cellular cytoskeleton is made of filamentous proteins, such as F-actin, and provides for structural support for the cell. Lamellipodia are extensions of the cellular cytoskeleton at the leading edge of a crawling cell generated so that the cell can extend, and thereby move in a particular direction. In the first two chapters, we focus on morphological characteristics of lamellipodia formation, which is, in part, shaped by branched filament nucleation via the branching protein Arp2/3. For …

Bioenergetics And Dynamics Of Ciliary Responses And Systems Biology Of Phototaxis In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Suphatra Adulrattananuwat Jan 2011

Bioenergetics And Dynamics Of Ciliary Responses And Systems Biology Of Phototaxis In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Suphatra Adulrattananuwat

Physics - Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to understand how a eukaryotic cell makes decisions. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a biciliated unicellular green alga, is used as our model organism. This organism has the ability to track the light using its photoreceptor called rhodopsin, which overlays the eyespot. The organism makes decisions to swim toward, away from, perpendicular to or to ignore the light using its slender arm-like structures called cilia. It can integrate several external inputs such as ion concentration and light intensity, and then process this information to adjust the steering of its cilia corresponding to its environment. We investigated how …

The Effect Of Immigrant Composition On Student Achievement: Evidence From New York City, Ryan Yeung Jan 2011

The Effect Of Immigrant Composition On Student Achievement: Evidence From New York City, Ryan Yeung

Public Administration - Dissertations

There has been a large body of recent literature focused on the effects of school composition on student outcomes. These studies have focused on peer group characteristics such as achievement, gender composition, ethnic and racial composition, and socioeconomic composition. This area of research has been commonly called "peer effects." A relatively unexplored area of peer effects research involves the effect of immigrant children on their schoolmates. Because of the heterogeneity between immigrant groups, this study focuses on East Asian and Dominican immigrant children. As these two groups are on opposite sides of the socioeconomic spectrum, comparing results of the two …

2010 Naps Presidential Address: "Fleeing The Kingdom": Augustin's Queer Theology Of Marriage, Virginia Burrus

Religion - All Scholarship

Might attending to the texture of bodies in Augustine’s theology of marriage open up new interpretive possibilities? Eve Kosofky Sedgwick and Patricia Cox Miller give theoretical cues, Danuta Shanzer philological ones, for a dialogical reading of On the Good of Marriage and Confessions that seeks to defamiliarize, complicate, and broaden—in several senses, to queer—traditional interpretations of Augustinian marital theology. Shame and vulnerability, fear and desire, pain and pleasure, are all surfaced, as Augustine depicts marital figures that are shot through with ambivalence—open and torn, cut and bleeding, both cleaving to one another and ripped apart. Ultimately, he attempts to …

Child Neglect And Its Association With Subsequent Juvenile Drug And Alcohol Offense, Ken Corvo, Wan-Yi Chen, Ellen Delara, Jennifer Propp Jan 2011

Child Neglect And Its Association With Subsequent Juvenile Drug And Alcohol Offense, Ken Corvo, Wan-Yi Chen, Ellen Delara, Jennifer Propp

Social Work - All Scholarship

This study presents empirical findings about the association between childhood neglect and adolescents’ subsequent involvement with drug and alcohol related offense from a sample of 251 neglected children and their community matched control (N = 502) from a 17-year period longitudinal data set. Findings confirmed that neglected children were at greater risk to be arrested for later juvenile drug and alcohol offenses than non-neglected children. Being male, White and the presence of domestic violence also significantly contributed to elevated risks of being arrested for juvenile drug and alcohol violations for neglected children. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Mutational Analysis Of Hiv-1 Nucleocapsid Protein And Methods Development For Aptamer Discovery, Wei Ouyang Jan 2011

Mutational Analysis Of Hiv-1 Nucleocapsid Protein And Methods Development For Aptamer Discovery, Wei Ouyang

Chemistry - Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on structural and functional studies related to the interaction between proteins and nucleic acids and their applications. The work reported here includes two projects. The first part of the thesis is on the mutational and combinatorial analysis of HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein (NCp7). Sixteen mutants of NCp7 were constructed and over-expressed in E. coli . The dissociation constants (K d ) between the mutant proteins and the major packaging signal in HIV-1, SL3 RNA, were measured using tryptophan fluorescence titration assay and/or isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) assay. Most mutants show tolerance of the mutation but some mutants, including …

Towards An Information Theoretic Framework For Evolutionary Learning, Stuart William Card Jan 2011

Towards An Information Theoretic Framework For Evolutionary Learning, Stuart William Card

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations

The vital essence of evolutionary learning consists of information flows between the environment and the entities differentially surviving and reproducing therein. Gain or loss of information in individuals and populations due to evolutionary steps should be considered in evolutionary algorithm theory and practice. Information theory has rarely been applied to evolutionary computation - a lacuna that this dissertation addresses, with an emphasis on objectively and explicitly evaluating the ensemble models implicit in evolutionary learning. Information theoretic functionals can provide objective, justifiable, general, computable, commensurate measures of fitness and diversity.

We identify information transmission channels implicit in evolutionary learning. We define …

Expanding Regional Renewable Governance, Hannah J. Wiseman Jan 2011

Expanding Regional Renewable Governance, Hannah J. Wiseman

Scholarly Publications

Energy drives economies and quality of life, yet accessible traditional fuels are increasingly scarce. Federal, state, and local governments have thus determined that renewable energy development is essential and have passed substantial requirements for its use. These lofty goals will fail, however, if policymakers rely upon existing institutions to govern renewable development. Renewable fuels are fugitive resources, and ideal property for renewable technology is defined by the strength of the sunlight or wind that flows over it. When a potential site for a utility-scale development is identified, a new piece of property, which I call a “renewable parcel,” is superimposed …

Economics, Behavioral Biology, And Law, Erin O'Hara O'Connor Jan 2011

Economics, Behavioral Biology, And Law, Erin O'Hara O'Connor

Scholarly Publications

This article compares the relevance to law of two unexpectedly similar fields: economics and behavioral biology. It first examines the assumptions, core concepts, methodological tenets, and emphases of the two fields. It then compares the interdisciplinary fields of law and economics, on one hand, with law and behavioral biology, on the other—highlighting not only important similarities but also important differences. The article subsequently explores ways that biological perspectives on human behavior may, among other things, improve economic models and the behavioral insights they generate. The article concludes that although there are important differences between the two fields, the overlaps between …
