Mapping And Analysing The Diversity Of The Genus Acantholimon Taxa In Turkey By Geographic Information Systems (Gis), Hakan Mete Doğan, Musa Doğan, Gali̇p Akaydin, Ferhat Celep

Turkish Journal of Botany

We describe the spatial distribution of the genus Acantholimon Boiss. (Plumbaginaceae) taxa in Turkey, and assess the role that environmental variables may be playing on this distribution. We collected a large number of specimens from 418 geo-referenced sampling sites between 2000 and 2004, and established a point database using geographic information systems (GIS) software. As a result, we identified and mapped 67 taxa; 43 of the determined taxa appear to be endemic. We re-evaluated the current conservation status of the taxa at a national level using recent IUCN Red List categories. In addition, we extracted the corresponding environmental variables of …

Population Dynamics Of Parthenium Hysterophorus (Asteraceae) And Its Biological Suppression Through Cassia Occidentalis (Caesalpiniaceae), Jai Knox, Disha Jaggi, Manoj Stephen Paul

Turkish Journal of Botany

Phytosociological analysis performed over 2005 to 2009 revealed that Cassia occidentalis L. is a dominant species at 3 of 4 sites in Agra district, India, that were previously observed to be dominated by heavy populations of Parthenium hysterophorus L. In order to determine the role of biomolecular interaction, i.e. the allelopathic effect, if any, on this shift of floral pattern effects, aqueous shoot and root cold leachates were determined on seed germination, shoot cut bioassay, seedling bioassay, chlorophyll, nitrogen, and protein content of P. hysterophorus. A significant reduction in germination percentage, shoot cut bioassay, seedling bioassay, and chlorophyll of P. …

Commentary On Immune System Associated Diseases Caused Byviruses: The Role Of Ebv, Dale L. Barnard, J. K. Li

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

In her review using the human Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) as an example, Dr. Chen intends to illustrate how host immune systems have evolved in response to pathogens or in many cases co-evolved with pathogens. She discusses why EBV in most people causes what appears to be a self-limiting lymphoproliferative disease (or is it? See her discussion of autoimmune diseases and EBV), but in a very small proportion of individuals the virus causes malignant diseases of severe consequence. She reviews some of the plausible explanations that may include interactions of environmental and host genetic factors resulting in EBV associated malignancies. She …

Analysis Of Chlamydia Pneumoniae And Ad-Like Pathology In The Brains Of Balb/C Mice Following Direct Intra-Cranial Infection, Jessica Rachel Barton, Christine J. Hammond, Amy L. Brady, Denah M. Appelt, Brian J. Balin, Christopher Scott Little

Scholarly Posters

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia. The pathology in the central nervous system (CNS) impairs memory and cognition, hindering the capabilities and the quality of life of the individual. This project continues studying the role of infection and Alzheimer’s disease, as previous studies in this laboratory have done, and contributes to the overall understanding of the possible causes of this disease. In this study, BALB/c mice were infected, via direct intracranial injection, with a respiratory isolate (AR-39) of Chlamydia pneumoniae. Their brains were analyzed at 7 and 14 days post-infection, …

Expression And Regulation Of Survivin In Prostate Cancer, Maygen K. Cardona Jan 2011

Expression And Regulation Of Survivin In Prostate Cancer, Maygen K. Cardona

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Survivin is an Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein (IAP), which makes it responsible for cell proliferation and survival by inhibiting regulated cell death and promoting mitosis. The exact role that it plays in prostate cancer is not yet fully understood; expression and regulation of Survivin is the primary focus of my project. The way Survivin was studied was through fractionating various cancer cells lines (LaPC-4, PC-3 E+, VCAP, C4-2 and DU145-Spindle, Round and Tight) and isolating the nuclear and cytosolic components. These fractionated samples were then treated and analyzed using Western Blot analysis being probed for nuclear and cytoplasmic Survivin, respectively. …

Issues In The Development Of Location Privacy Theory, Robert Minch Jan 2011

Issues In The Development Of Location Privacy Theory, Robert Minch

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Issues in the development of location privacy theory are identified and organized based on both technological considerations and more general privacy theories. Three broad categories containing six issues are described: location (including sensing methods and location properties), privacy (including definition and subject identification), and information flows (from location information acquisition through storage, use, and sharing). An influence diagram model is presented which relates these issues in context and may serve as a basis for further theory development, empirical research, and public policy discussion.

Numerical Solutions For A Model Of Tissue Invasion And Migration Of Tumour Cells, Mikhail Kolev, Barbara Zubik-Kowal Jan 2011

Numerical Solutions For A Model Of Tissue Invasion And Migration Of Tumour Cells, Mikhail Kolev, Barbara Zubik-Kowal

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The goal of this paper is to construct a new algorithm for the numerical simulations of the evolution of tumour invasion and metastasis. By means of mathematical model equations and their numerical solutions we investigate how cancer cells can produce and secrete matrix degradative enzymes, degrade extracellular matrix, and invade due to diffusion and haptotactic migration. For the numerical simulations of the interactions between the tumour cells and the surrounding tissue, we apply numerical approximations, which are spectrally accurate and based on small amounts of grid-points. Our numerical experiments illustrate the metastatic ability of tumour cells.

Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation Changes Velopharyngeal Control In Parkinson’S Disease, Michael J. Hammer, Steven M. Barlow, Kelly E. Lyons, Rajesh Pahwa Jan 2011

Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation Changes Velopharyngeal Control In Parkinson’S Disease, Michael J. Hammer, Steven M. Barlow, Kelly E. Lyons, Rajesh Pahwa

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Purpose

Adequate velopharyngeal control is essential for speech, but may be impaired in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) improves limb function in PD, but the effects on velopharyngeal control remain unknown. We tested whether STN DBS would change aerodynamic measures of velopharyngeal control, and whether these changes were correlated with limb function and stimulation settings.

Methods

Seventeen PD participants with bilateral STN DBS were tested within a morning session after a minimum of 12 h since their most recent dose of anti-PD medication. Testing occurred when STN DBS was on, and again 1 h …
