The aim of this study is to investigate in-vitro antimicrobial effects of the essential oils from oregano (Origanum acutidens and Origanum rotundifolium) and thyme (Thymus sipyleus subsp. sipyleus var. rosulans). The chemical composition and antimicrobial attributes of the essential oils obtained from the aerial parts of the plants, of which there were 3 Lamiaceae species, have been studied. A total of 43 microorganisms, including 26 bacteria, 14 fungi, and 3 yeasts species, have been studied by using disc-diffusion (DD) and minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) methods. A protocol for production of virus-free Vitis vinifera using meristem culture was developed. Meristems (0.1-0.2 mm) of V. vinifera infected with grapevine fanleaf virus and grape leafroll associated viruses were excised from 1-year-old growing vines. Shoot tips were cultured on half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, supplemented with 0.02 mg L^{-1} of benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.01 mg L^{-1} of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). BAP and kinetin resulted in differences in the number of new shoots per explant, shoot height, and number of new leaves per explant. This study was carried out to analyze the spatial and temporal pattern of land use/land cover change (from 1955 to 2008) and migration movement (from 1935 to 2007) in the Gökçay River Watershed. To assess this period, the necessary data were obtained from forest stand maps (1955 and 2008) and evaluated by using Geographic Information Systems. Maps of the study area dated 1955 and 2008 have been analyzed, and land use type and change on the land pattern have been investigated. Dormancy in Cercis siliquastrum seeds is due to the hard, impermeable seed coat and inhibition by endosperm. The effects of acid scarification, cold moist stratification, and the combination of both on breaking dormancy and enhancing seed germination were evaluated. Seeds were scarified with concentrated (95%-97%) sulfuric acid for various times (0, 20, 40, and 60 min), followed by cold moist stratification for 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 months. In this study, the carbon stocks of forests of Turkey were examined by taking the national forest inventory completed in 2004 as a basis. Furthermore, the annual accumulations of carbon in the above- and below-ground biomass of Turkey were also investigated according to the gain-loss methods of "Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use" (AFOLU), published in 2006. The results of estimates showed that the total stock in all carbon pools (above- and below-ground, dead wood, litter, and soil) in the forests of Turkey was 2251.26 Tg C in 2004. Four grape rootstocks belonging to different Vitis species were planted in September. Rooting behaviour, polyphenol oxidase (PPO; EC 1.14.18.1) activity and biochemical parameters were studied at different growth stages after planting the cuttings in polythene bags. Significant differences were recorded for rooting success among the different rootstocks, with the maximum sprouting percentage determined in the Freedom rootstock. The highest variation in PPO activity was also recorded in Freedom. High PPO activity was recorded in rootstock 140 Ru, while the highest root length was recorded in Dog Ridge. Using irrigation water with a salinity level of 0.8, 2, and 5 g L^{-1}, the impact of saline water irrigation on the yield and quality of 2 Chinese Cucurbit species, melon (Cucumis melo cv. Huanghe) and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus. convar megulaspemus) were studied in Minqin Oasis, northwestern China. Our results show that melon yields decreased as water salinity increased, just as concentrations of glutamic acid content rose, although the concentration of most amino acids did not differ significantly. Bioconversion of cellulosic components into fermentable sugars has currently been accomplished with the help of the microbial enzyme, cellulase. In this study, Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacquin ex Fr.) Kummer and Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer were tested for cellulase production by solid state fermentation (SSF) using saw dust, sugarcane bagasse, and paddy straw as substrate. To enhance production, the substrates were pretreated with 1% and 4% NaOH solutions. Supernatants of extracted enzyme solutions were used to estimate reducing sugar and soluble protein, as well as enzyme activities. Many ecological regions of Turkey are suitable for the production of durum wheat, and therefore the yield and quality of this wheat should be improved. In this study, stability properties associated with the pasta quality of 25 durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) genotypes grown in 3 different locations (Tokat-Kazova, Diyarbakır, and Sivas-Ulaş) for 2 years (2005-2006, 2006-2007) were investigated. The container type used in nursery culture is among the most important determinants of containerised seedling quality. The objective of the present study was to analyse root and shoot growth, root growth potential, and photochemical efficiency of seedlings of Picea abies, Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus brutia, and Pinus nigra cultivated for 5 weeks in mini-plugs of 2 different cavity depths (37 and 60 mm). The results showed that precultivation of P. nigra and, to a lesser extent, of R. pseudoacacia in deeper mini-plug containers improved seedling morphological attributes and quality, but shallow containers produced better quality seedlings of P. abies. The present study was undertaken to contribute to the continuous search for efficient in vitro protocols for the micropropagation of olive trees, with special focus on the Oueslati cultivar. It investigates the main factors involved in the micropropagation process, namely medium composition, growth regulators, rooting, and acclimatization conditions. It demonstrates that under particular conditions, the Oueslati cultivar displays a high capacity to proliferate. During the multiplication phase, the multiplication medium, which is a modification of Rugini medium with zeatin (1 and 2 mg L^{-1}), yielded the highest multiplication rates, with an average of more than 9. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in families Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae have considerable potential as biological control agents against soil-inhabiting insect pests. In the present study, the potential of Steinernema feltiae as a biological control agent against cabbage maggot (CM) Delia radicum (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), persistence of the nematode in areas infested by CM larvae, and foraging behavior of the nematode toward CM and/or oilseed rape roots were examined in the laboratory. Bacillus thuringiensis was detected in 12.5% of soil samples collected from different regions in Syria and 25 B. thuringiensis isolates were found to be highly toxic to larvae of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, Phthorimaea operculella Zeller, and Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera), but not to the larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera). Light microscopy investigation showed the presence of bipyramidal and cuboidal parasporal bodies produced by these isolates. The loss of agricultural land due to the development of other land uses has increasingly become an issue of local, regional, and national concern in Turkey. This study was aimed at evaluating land use potential and suitability of 174 land mapping units of 72,544 ha in Amik Plain (Hatay, Turkey) for 21 different land use types. Biological control of chestnut blight was investigated by using 3 hypovirulent isolates of Cryphonectria parasitica, 5 Trichoderma sp., 4 Penicillium sp., and 4 Bacillus sp. isolates. Hypovirulent isolates and antagonistic organisms were obtained from samples collected from the Black Sea region of Turkey, in 2008 and 2009. Effectiveness of the hypovirulent isolates and antagonistic microorganisms was tested on 3-year-old chestnut saplings. Na^+/H^+ antiporters have been suggested to play important roles in salt tolerance in plants. English cordgrass (Spartina anglica) is a gramineous halophyte with very strong salt tolerance. It possesses salt glands in its stems and leaves, through which excess salt can be excreted. In this study, a vacuolar Na^+/H^+ antiporter homologous gene (temporarily named SaNHX1) was isolated from Spartina anglica by RT-PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). In a glasshouse experiment, the effectiveness of the entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) was compared with thiamethoxam for the control of adults of the greenhouse whitefly (GWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), on slicer cucumbers. Azocalixarenes.7: Synthesis And Study Of The Absorption Properties Of Novel Mono-Azo Substituted Chromogenic Calix[4]Arenes, Hasaletti̇n Deli̇göz, Özlem Özen Karakuş

Eight new mono-azo substituted chromogenic calix[4]arenes (1-8) were synthesized by diazo-coupling reactions in which 25,26,27-tribenzoyloxy-28-hydroxy-5,11,17-tri-(tert-butyl)calix[4]arene and diazonium salts (2-, 3-, and 4-nitroaniline; 4-phenyl azoaniline; 3- and 4-chloroaniline; or 2- and 4-methylaniline) formed the corresponding mono-azo substituted derivatives in high yields. The mono-azo substituted calix[4]arenes were characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, and ^1H-NMR spectroscopic techniques. Elemental analysis was also carried out. In addition, the effects of varying pH levels and solvents upon the absorption ability of azocalix[4]arenes substituted with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups at their o-, m-, and p- positions were studied. The volatile constituents of the essential oils from the flower, leaf, and stem of Paeonia daurica Andrews were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. A total of 74 compounds were identified, constituting over 95.0%, 80.8%, and 98.2% of the oil composition of the flower, leaf, and stem of P. daurica, respectively. Aldehydes were shown to be the main group of constituents of the flower and stem parts, at 39.1% and 79.8%, respectively. In this work, a hard model chemometric method was used to determine the stability constants of copper(II) and mercury(II) complexes with the newly synthesized ligand 5-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)- 2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione in acetonitrile by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The ligand forms stable complexes with both metal cations. The protonation constants of the ligand were also measured in an ethanol-water (1:1) mixture.

In this study, 18 new N-octyl, N-decyl, and N-dodecyl substituted o-, m-, and p-methoxy (E)-3- and 4-azachalcones, {4- or 3-[(1E)-3-(4-, 3-, or 2-methoxyphenyl)-3-oxoprop-1-en-1-yl]-1-alkyl (C_{8,10,12}) pyridinium bromides} (1a-6a, 1b-1b, and 1c-6c), and 4 new o-, and m-methoxy (E)-3- and 4-azachalcones (2, 3, 5, and 6) were synthesized and tested for antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, and Candida albicans. N-Alkyl substituted azachalconium bromides showed good antimicrobial activity against all tested microorganisms with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 0.42-58.7 \mu g/mL in most cases. Microwave Synthesis Of Some New Antimicrobial And Antiproliferative Butenamides And Pyrrolidine-2,5-Diones, Shadia Mahmoud Abdallah, Halima Aly Hefny

Microwave irradiation, comparable to conventional thermal heating, proves to be a convenient method in assisting the synthesis of some butenamides, pyrrolidine-2,5-diones, and their benzenesulfonamido derivatives, which are known to have biological activities and wide medical and industrial applications. Both procedures were used to compare their efficiency in synthesizing butenamides and pyrrolidine-2,5-diones (2-25), which have important and wide applications, from condensation of \alpha,\beta-unsaturated anhydride (1) with the corresponding amines. Some of the products showed biological or cytotoxic (antiproliferative) activity.
